DTL - Part 9: Fighting Back

DTL - Part 9: Fighting Back

On May 31, 2002, 22 year old LSU Grad Assistant Charlotte Murray Pace was attacked in her Baton Rouge townhouse which she had moved into only days earlier.  She was brutally stabbed more than 80 times.  Evidence from the crime scene showed that Pace fought her attacker fiercely throughout several rooms of her home. Her struggle was instrumental to the investigation into her murder, as she trapped her killer’s DNA under her fingernails.

1
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:12.839
In the sultry heat of Louisiana, where the bayous whisper

2
00:00:12.919 --> 00:00:16.079
secrets and the air hangs heavy with the scent of magnolias,

3
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:20.480
a darkness lurked beneath the surface. Derrick Todd Lee was

4
00:00:20.480 --> 00:00:24.160
a man whose charm masked a sinister reality. He was

5
00:00:24.160 --> 00:00:28.600
a monster. Lee, a seemingly ordinary man with a disarming smile,

6
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:31.480
led a double life that would unravel in a series

7
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:34.079
of murders in the capital city of Baton Rouge and

8
00:00:34.119 --> 00:00:37.799
the surrounding areas. As the first reports of disappearances and

9
00:00:37.920 --> 00:00:42.119
murders began to surface, South Louisiana was thrust into a nightmare,

10
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:46.000
igniting a frantic search for answers. The true horror was

11
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:49.280
just beginning, and the hunt for a serial killer eventually

12
00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:52.000
known by just three letters, would reveal not only the

13
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.520
depths of Dereck Todd Lee's depravity, but also the resilience

14
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:58.479
of those most affected by his evil acts, the families

15
00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:11.040
and the survivors. This is DTL. May of two thousand

16
00:01:11.040 --> 00:01:14.200
and two was an exciting time for students on Lshu's campus.

17
00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:17.400
As is common with most universities, May is the month

18
00:01:17.400 --> 00:01:19.760
of graduation for those who have put in the work

19
00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:23.840
and passed their classes. After graduation, this summer starts and

20
00:01:23.879 --> 00:01:27.400
the fun begins. Twenty two year old Charlotte Murray Pace

21
00:01:27.480 --> 00:01:30.519
had already graduated with her undergrad degree, but she was

22
00:01:30.599 --> 00:01:33.400
now on track to becoming the youngest person to ever

23
00:01:33.439 --> 00:01:37.400
obtain an MBA at LSU. This girl was smart and

24
00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:40.480
she had it going on. From the time she could walk.

25
00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:46.040
She was succeeding at everything she touched. Ballet, sports, academics.

26
00:01:46.400 --> 00:01:49.079
Murray was a winner, but she also had a spunk

27
00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:52.519
about her that was undeniable. While having the grace demanded

28
00:01:52.519 --> 00:01:55.519
of a dancer, she also had the backbone of being

29
00:01:55.560 --> 00:01:58.239
a leader. Once, when she was six years old, a

30
00:01:58.359 --> 00:02:01.280
known bully was her harassing kid on the bus. When

31
00:02:01.319 --> 00:02:03.879
it was her turn to be harassed, she bawled up

32
00:02:03.879 --> 00:02:07.560
that little fist and punched that kid's square in the nose. Certainly,

33
00:02:07.640 --> 00:02:10.560
violence wasn't promoted in the house, but guess what, that

34
00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:14.439
bully never bothered her again. Murray grew into a five

35
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:18.400
foot seven inch parent's dream come true, with glossy brown

36
00:02:18.439 --> 00:02:22.240
hair and a stunning smile. She dominated in school and

37
00:02:22.319 --> 00:02:26.000
athletics alike. She studied hard, and she was known to

38
00:02:26.080 --> 00:02:29.240
keep her notes and her books pristine. She was the

39
00:02:29.280 --> 00:02:31.759
teenager with a full face of makeup when the rest

40
00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:34.400
of her friends were in T shirts and shorts. She

41
00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:36.759
was someone that you would look at and think, Wow,

42
00:02:37.159 --> 00:02:42.000
that's the whole package. She dressed impeccably, always in style,

43
00:02:42.039 --> 00:02:44.560
with her fashion choices, which she was happy to help

44
00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:48.280
others master through makeovers if they wanted. She was bubbly

45
00:02:48.439 --> 00:02:51.879
and happy and full of energy, but she also could

46
00:02:51.879 --> 00:02:55.400
be stubborn. When she wanted to do something, she wanted

47
00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:57.759
to do it, even if her parents thought it wasn't

48
00:02:57.759 --> 00:03:01.039
a good idea. But one thing they definitely agreed on

49
00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:04.520
was her maturity. She, like others in this series, completed

50
00:03:04.599 --> 00:03:08.120
high school early, mastering the classes in such speed that

51
00:03:08.199 --> 00:03:11.240
she was able to skip her senior year entirely, heading

52
00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:15.240
straight to college at Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. She

53
00:03:15.319 --> 00:03:18.199
also had the opportunity to play soccer for them while attending.

54
00:03:18.680 --> 00:03:21.400
Traveling was also something that Murray dreamed of, so when

55
00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:24.520
she got the opportunity to study abroad, she jumped at

56
00:03:24.520 --> 00:03:27.919
the chance. She was stoked about the adventure, which lasted

57
00:03:27.919 --> 00:03:30.520
for about six weeks, and she made good friends in

58
00:03:30.560 --> 00:03:33.319
the process who hung out during their free time. They

59
00:03:33.360 --> 00:03:37.159
went to London, Paris, Munich, and Prague, as well as

60
00:03:37.159 --> 00:03:40.639
to Ireland to celebrate one friend's birthday. She would call

61
00:03:40.680 --> 00:03:43.919
back home and tell Mama Anne all about her adventures,

62
00:03:44.159 --> 00:03:46.520
and her mama would beam with pride, knowing that her

63
00:03:46.599 --> 00:03:50.360
girl was living her dreams. Murray did get her bachelor's

64
00:03:50.360 --> 00:03:52.319
degree in no time, and by two thousand and two

65
00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:55.919
she moved to Louisiana to pursue her master's degree at

66
00:03:55.960 --> 00:03:59.919
none other than Louisiana State University. The home she rented

67
00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:03.199
was right near campus on Stanford Avenue, and you may

68
00:04:03.199 --> 00:04:07.280
be thinking, why does that sound familiar? Well, this was

69
00:04:07.319 --> 00:04:10.560
the same area where Eugenet Woffontaine had called home years

70
00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:13.759
ago when she was abducted and murdered. That horror was

71
00:04:13.800 --> 00:04:16.600
now long gone from the media as new tragedies took

72
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:20.439
over daily life. But that said, Murray now lived just

73
00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:23.160
three doors down from the home where Gina Green was

74
00:04:23.279 --> 00:04:26.120
murdered a few months prior. To say she and roommate

75
00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:29.120
Rebecca weren't shook by that news would be a lie. However,

76
00:04:29.199 --> 00:04:32.120
in reality, life goes on when your neighbor is murdered

77
00:04:32.160 --> 00:04:36.600
and it remains unsolved. Was it scary, of course, I mean,

78
00:04:36.600 --> 00:04:39.079
it could have been them, after all, But this was

79
00:04:39.079 --> 00:04:42.879
also something that doesn't happen often and surely wouldn't happen again,

80
00:04:43.160 --> 00:04:46.920
at least not in the same area. Even so, Murray

81
00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:49.639
called her mom after Gina's murder, and she was worried

82
00:04:49.639 --> 00:04:52.920
by the viciousness of it. Murder isn't something you ever

83
00:04:53.079 --> 00:04:55.720
expect to affect your own life, and here she was

84
00:04:55.759 --> 00:04:59.160
with a neighbor murdered. She didn't know Gina personally, but

85
00:04:59.240 --> 00:05:03.079
it still was with her. Mama Anne did exactly what

86
00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:06.759
you would expect. She reiterated being safe, and of course

87
00:05:06.839 --> 00:05:10.279
reminded her daughter how much she was loved. I know, Mama,

88
00:05:10.839 --> 00:05:14.959
I know. Murray was working for the Elishue Alumni Association

89
00:05:15.079 --> 00:05:17.439
on campus for the moment, but she was excited to

90
00:05:17.480 --> 00:05:21.000
accept a new job with the firm Deloitte and Touche.

91
00:05:21.199 --> 00:05:24.040
Murray's master's degree had been completed the week before, which

92
00:05:24.040 --> 00:05:27.439
focused on internal auditing. The new job would require her

93
00:05:27.480 --> 00:05:30.480
to move to Atlanta to start her professional career, and

94
00:05:30.519 --> 00:05:32.959
the thought of moving back to Mississippi with her parents

95
00:05:33.360 --> 00:05:36.000
just to turn right around and move back to Atlanta. Well,

96
00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:38.839
that sounded like a lot. She also still had lots

97
00:05:38.839 --> 00:05:41.439
of activities to attend in Baton Rouge as well as

98
00:05:41.480 --> 00:05:45.000
some other events. So that said, she decided to stay

99
00:05:45.040 --> 00:05:47.959
at LSU for the summer, moving in temporarily to a

100
00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:51.399
new townhome with Rebecca until she could head off to Atlanta.

101
00:05:52.120 --> 00:05:54.560
The town home was near LSU, but on the other

102
00:05:54.639 --> 00:05:57.360
side of campus from their previous home near Gina Green.

103
00:05:58.160 --> 00:06:02.079
Charlotwe Avenue is in an area again full of college students,

104
00:06:02.079 --> 00:06:05.759
with town homes connected to one another lining multiple streets.

105
00:06:06.120 --> 00:06:08.519
It was in an area with quick access to River

106
00:06:08.639 --> 00:06:10.879
Road as well as campus, so it was a good

107
00:06:10.920 --> 00:06:13.639
area for the girls to live. They had only been

108
00:06:13.680 --> 00:06:15.959
in their new town home for about a week, still

109
00:06:15.959 --> 00:06:18.920
not completely unpacked, when they would head out for another

110
00:06:19.040 --> 00:06:22.399
big event. It was May thirty first, two thousand and two,

111
00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:24.839
when Murray was packing to head out for her old

112
00:06:24.920 --> 00:06:29.439
roommate and great friend, Grace Crouch's wedding. The wedding was

113
00:06:29.480 --> 00:06:33.240
to be held the following day in Alexandria, Louisiana. Life

114
00:06:33.319 --> 00:06:38.000
was just lifing for these twenty somethings. Graduation and weddings

115
00:06:38.040 --> 00:06:40.040
and all of the big things that tend to fall

116
00:06:40.040 --> 00:06:43.120
into place at that age were now becoming a reality

117
00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:46.759
for them. The excitement was palpable, and the girls were

118
00:06:46.800 --> 00:06:50.319
giddy with joy for one another's successes. Murray had to

119
00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:52.439
work that morning for a bid at the Alumni Center,

120
00:06:52.759 --> 00:06:54.959
but she planned to leave around ten thirty or so

121
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.959
to head back to the house. Before leaving for the wedding,

122
00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:00.600
she also had a couple of errands to run. She

123
00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:04.680
drove a BMW. She was so proud of that BMW

124
00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:07.319
and she couldn't show up to a wedding with it filthy,

125
00:07:07.680 --> 00:07:10.199
so around eleven thirty she took it through the car wash.

126
00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:15.120
Interesting enough, Gina Green also drove a BMW. Murray and

127
00:07:15.160 --> 00:07:17.639
her roommate Rebecca, had been friends for about six years

128
00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.720
at this point, and the two of them really enjoyed

129
00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:22.480
living with one another. They were close and they would

130
00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:25.399
speak throughout the day as close friends do. They made

131
00:07:25.480 --> 00:07:27.560
plans to meet up at their home around one pm

132
00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:30.279
to pack the car and hit the road for Grace's wedding.

133
00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:32.680
The trip was only about a two hour drive, but

134
00:07:32.879 --> 00:07:36.639
in reality, daytime travel is safer and hey, the party

135
00:07:36.639 --> 00:07:39.920
could start sooner. Rebecca was a bridesmaid in the wedding

136
00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:42.079
as well, so she had to be there on time

137
00:07:42.160 --> 00:07:45.160
and ready for the next day's activities. The town home

138
00:07:45.199 --> 00:07:47.560
they shared was a modest looking one, but average for

139
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:51.000
the area. Most occupants were college runners and not planning

140
00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:54.079
to live in the area permanently, so the setup was perfect.

141
00:07:54.399 --> 00:07:56.480
Their town home was the last one on the corner

142
00:07:56.519 --> 00:07:58.639
of a cross street, which I'm taking the time to

143
00:07:58.680 --> 00:08:04.639
explain because in murder, just like in real estate, location, location, location,

144
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:08.600
it matters. The cross streets of their home both led

145
00:08:08.600 --> 00:08:13.720
directly to major thoroughfares. One direction hit Brightside, the other Nicholson.

146
00:08:14.240 --> 00:08:18.199
Either way, a quick getaway with maximum distance was easy,

147
00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:21.639
especially for someone who was out hunting the grounds looking

148
00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:26.600
for a new victim, someone young, vibrant, and most importantly,

149
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:32.799
someone this specific killer could never have. Someone too successful,

150
00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:37.000
too joyous, too involved in creating a thriving life to

151
00:08:37.159 --> 00:08:40.600
ever notice a low life woman abuser who couldn't keep

152
00:08:40.639 --> 00:08:43.679
a job. Once he lay eyes on Murray for the

153
00:08:43.720 --> 00:08:47.840
first time, he knew he had his next victim. Whether

154
00:08:47.879 --> 00:08:51.399
he noticed her shiny BMW or simply saw her beautiful

155
00:08:51.440 --> 00:08:54.120
face as she walked to her home, no one really knows,

156
00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:57.919
but however it occurred, Murray had no clue she was

157
00:08:58.000 --> 00:09:01.120
directly in the sights of a killer, and those sites

158
00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:05.720
were locked in during broad daylight. Their town home was

159
00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:09.440
three bedrooms, two bath, sixteen hundred square feet, and the

160
00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:12.519
layout was really simple. The front door opened to a

161
00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:15.279
small living room with a fireplace and mantle directly to

162
00:09:15.360 --> 00:09:18.360
the left from the living room, the kitchen is to

163
00:09:18.399 --> 00:09:21.679
the left, and to the right were two ground floor bedrooms.

164
00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:25.759
The kitchen was really a narrow passageway sink and counter

165
00:09:25.799 --> 00:09:29.000
space on one side, refrigerator and appliances on the other.

166
00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:32.759
It was narrow enough that only one person could probably

167
00:09:32.799 --> 00:09:36.559
cook comfortably without bumping into someone else, but two people

168
00:09:36.679 --> 00:09:39.879
could be in the passageway at the same time. Passing

169
00:09:39.919 --> 00:09:42.639
through the kitchen, you would enter a small dining area,

170
00:09:42.840 --> 00:09:45.480
where the stairs led up to a loft area. The

171
00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:48.879
loft had its own bathroom and its own closets. The

172
00:09:48.919 --> 00:09:52.120
girls each took a downstairs bedroom, while the upstairs was

173
00:09:52.159 --> 00:09:55.879
reserved for overnight guests. The small backyard was fenced in,

174
00:09:56.120 --> 00:09:58.960
and the back door opened directly into that small dining

175
00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:03.399
area and the staircase. Most commonly, residents would park behind

176
00:10:03.399 --> 00:10:06.240
their town homes to enter because, as in this instance,

177
00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:09.279
their town home faced a major roadway and it wasn't

178
00:10:09.320 --> 00:10:13.399
conducive for daily entering nor parking. So after washing her BMW,

179
00:10:13.720 --> 00:10:17.200
Murray returned home to finish up packing and await Rebecca's return,

180
00:10:17.240 --> 00:10:20.440
which was expected to be around one o'clock. Rebecca was

181
00:10:20.519 --> 00:10:22.559
running a bit late, though, and it ended up being

182
00:10:22.600 --> 00:10:25.519
more like two pm before she would get there. No worries,

183
00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:27.840
Murray would be ready to go when she got there,

184
00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:31.159
so she continued small tasks around the town home, including

185
00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:34.320
making a sandwich and cracking open an ice cold diet

186
00:10:34.360 --> 00:10:37.600
Doctor Pepper. Nothing beats that first gulp in the fizz

187
00:10:37.600 --> 00:10:40.919
of a carbonated drink when you're thirsty, does it. Murray

188
00:10:40.960 --> 00:10:43.399
then mosied into the small living room and plopped down

189
00:10:43.399 --> 00:10:46.120
on the couch to relax and eat. But no sooner

190
00:10:46.120 --> 00:10:48.279
did she sit down, there was a knock at the

191
00:10:48.279 --> 00:10:51.679
front door. It was a sunny and nice day, and

192
00:10:51.720 --> 00:10:53.840
because of that it almost put her in a happier mood,

193
00:10:53.960 --> 00:10:57.080
even when being interrupted. While eating. Setting the sandwich on

194
00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:59.600
the arm of the sofa, Murray got up to open

195
00:10:59.639 --> 00:11:03.679
the door. It was only about eight steps away. Nothing

196
00:11:03.679 --> 00:11:06.399
he would really think twice about. But we all know

197
00:11:06.519 --> 00:11:10.080
what's coming. What stood just on the other side of

198
00:11:10.120 --> 00:11:14.039
that thin wooden door, now only seven steps away from

199
00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:17.559
someone willing to knock in broad daylight, with the intentions

200
00:11:17.559 --> 00:11:20.480
of horrors beyond what any normal person would even be

201
00:11:20.559 --> 00:11:24.679
able to imagine. Now five steps away from not making

202
00:11:24.679 --> 00:11:28.320
it to the wedding. She so looked forward to three

203
00:11:28.320 --> 00:11:33.240
steps from Murray, never seeing her mother again, one step

204
00:11:33.279 --> 00:11:37.159
from the scariest minutes that she will ever encounter. And

205
00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:40.000
then it was zero as she flipped the lock and

206
00:11:40.120 --> 00:11:43.720
opened the door to a stranger. He smiled and locked

207
00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:47.200
eyes with her, but behind that kind face, he was

208
00:11:47.240 --> 00:11:50.840
smiling at his prey. The man was looking for someone

209
00:11:50.840 --> 00:11:53.600
in the neighborhood. But just as Murray began to explain

210
00:11:53.639 --> 00:11:56.240
he was at the wrong house, the man's innocent and

211
00:11:56.279 --> 00:12:02.320
inquisitive face evolved into one of extreme disgust. He couldn't

212
00:12:02.320 --> 00:12:05.279
hold the ruse anymore as he barreled forward into Murray

213
00:12:05.279 --> 00:12:08.559
without hesitation, and she found herself instantly in a fight

214
00:12:08.679 --> 00:12:11.159
for her life. She was behind the ball, and that

215
00:12:11.240 --> 00:12:15.480
reaction is slower than action. But Derek Toddley vastly underestimated

216
00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:18.600
what was about to take place inside that home. As

217
00:12:18.679 --> 00:12:22.120
Murray realized the imminent danger she faced, she switched straight

218
00:12:22.240 --> 00:12:25.360
into feral mode, putting up a struggle like no other

219
00:12:25.480 --> 00:12:31.919
woman before. Murray didn't turn and run, No, she pushed back, clawing, shoving,

220
00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:34.639
and screaming as she attempted to get the man back

221
00:12:34.679 --> 00:12:37.960
outside of the front door. But physically he was much

222
00:12:38.080 --> 00:12:42.919
bigger and stronger. The thing was, the adrenaline was coursing

223
00:12:42.960 --> 00:12:45.960
through Murray's veins, and she wasn't going down without a fight.

224
00:12:46.440 --> 00:12:49.080
Not only was she steadfast in her attack on life,

225
00:12:49.320 --> 00:12:52.360
but also in her defense of it. Murray was going

226
00:12:52.360 --> 00:12:55.840
to put up quite possibly the fiercest fight DTL would

227
00:12:55.840 --> 00:12:59.399
ever experience against a woman, and for this he would

228
00:12:59.480 --> 00:13:04.320
become even more enraged. The fight moved room to room,

229
00:13:04.559 --> 00:13:07.360
from the living room into the kitchen, and back out

230
00:13:07.399 --> 00:13:10.519
towards the bedrooms, both of them slamming into sheet rock

231
00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:13.559
and pawing at one another, each desperate to better their

232
00:13:13.600 --> 00:13:17.480
position in the brawl. Dereck Todd Lee had experience in fighting,

233
00:13:17.720 --> 00:13:22.759
specifically to the death, while Murray understandably didn't. This disadvantage

234
00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:26.279
of a sudden adrenaline dump likely created tunnel vision for Murray,

235
00:13:26.480 --> 00:13:28.840
and while she had an instant boost of raw power,

236
00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:32.919
she burned through that temporary power quickly. Because of this,

237
00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:36.320
she was left exhausted much faster than the experienced killer.

238
00:13:36.720 --> 00:13:40.080
His prior murders helped him to develop stress inoculation, where

239
00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:43.399
he thought more clearly during explosive moments just as these.

240
00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:47.399
He continued to attack as Murray did everything possible to

241
00:13:47.399 --> 00:13:49.840
get away from him and to get him off of her.

242
00:13:50.320 --> 00:13:53.519
The entire time this was happening, Murray was losing her

243
00:13:53.559 --> 00:13:57.759
fine motor skills while his remained. This difference allowing for

244
00:13:57.879 --> 00:14:02.679
precise and devastating execution of pain infliction upon her. He

245
00:14:02.759 --> 00:14:07.000
didn't lose composure. He became more methodical as Murray became

246
00:14:07.080 --> 00:14:11.360
more panicked. She scratched and swung at him as panic ensued,

247
00:14:11.799 --> 00:14:14.759
ensuring that he wouldn't be leaving without an injury himself.

248
00:14:15.200 --> 00:14:18.279
She did bloody him too, and he was not prepared

249
00:14:18.320 --> 00:14:22.559
for this. He fully expected control by submission, but this

250
00:14:22.600 --> 00:14:26.440
girl wasn't the one, and he had definitely underestimated her.

251
00:14:27.159 --> 00:14:30.200
As a result, his brutality would ramp up as the

252
00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:35.159
struggle continued. They tussled and pushed, and his blood dripped.

253
00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:37.440
He was having a hard time keeping a hold of

254
00:14:37.480 --> 00:14:40.919
her as she struggled. If he wanted to regain control

255
00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:44.200
of her, he would have to become even more brutal,

256
00:14:44.559 --> 00:14:48.279
and the more violent he became, the quicker her energy

257
00:14:48.320 --> 00:14:51.840
began to fade. As he gained the upper hand, he

258
00:14:51.919 --> 00:14:54.720
grabbed Murray by the hair and slammed her head into

259
00:14:54.799 --> 00:14:57.240
the wall of the hallway, causing damage to both her

260
00:14:57.279 --> 00:15:00.360
skull and the sheet rock. The blood smeared as she

261
00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:04.039
was drug further down the hall, yet the fight continued. Ever,

262
00:15:04.120 --> 00:15:06.840
the one to be well put together. A clothes iron

263
00:15:06.919 --> 00:15:09.559
was out from her, pressing her clothes. Derek saw it

264
00:15:09.639 --> 00:15:11.639
and he was able to grab it. As if the

265
00:15:11.639 --> 00:15:15.000
brutal beating thus far wasn't enough, he began raining down,

266
00:15:15.120 --> 00:15:18.840
blow after blow after blow with a metal portion of

267
00:15:18.879 --> 00:15:22.639
the iron, striking Murray's head, face, and body. How it

268
00:15:22.720 --> 00:15:25.759
didn't knock her out is incredible, but he continued to

269
00:15:25.759 --> 00:15:28.480
beat her with the iron until the plastic portion of

270
00:15:28.519 --> 00:15:32.480
the handle shattered against her skull, blood dripping down her

271
00:15:32.480 --> 00:15:36.519
head and face. Grossly injured, Murray continued to try and

272
00:15:36.559 --> 00:15:40.440
defend herself as she got weaker and weaker, and weaker.

273
00:15:40.960 --> 00:15:43.879
Her arms felt too heavy to swing, and her legs

274
00:15:43.879 --> 00:15:48.279
were limp, eventually crumbling underneath her own weight. Seeing this occur,

275
00:15:48.759 --> 00:15:51.919
Derek drug her into the bathroom and then, grabbing a

276
00:15:51.960 --> 00:15:54.759
fistful of her hair, he pulled her up to her

277
00:15:54.799 --> 00:15:58.759
feet as she clumsily leaned against the counter. Why he

278
00:15:58.799 --> 00:16:04.000
did this is an absolute atrocity of itself. He wanted

279
00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:08.279
her to know he had won, how much damage he

280
00:16:08.320 --> 00:16:12.240
had done to her. He took pleasure in pushing her

281
00:16:12.279 --> 00:16:15.480
face up to the mirror, all while holding her hair,

282
00:16:15.879 --> 00:16:20.080
demanding she look at herself and how horrible her condition was,

283
00:16:20.519 --> 00:16:25.600
undoubtedly crying and whimpering, praying for a miracle. Murray was

284
00:16:25.639 --> 00:16:28.639
then drugged by her assailant to the bedroom, where he

285
00:16:28.720 --> 00:16:33.639
pulled out a weapon. A flathead screwdriver. Seems innocent enough

286
00:16:33.759 --> 00:16:36.120
until it's placed into the hands of a man held

287
00:16:36.200 --> 00:16:39.759
bent on murder. Derek Tidley got on top of Murray

288
00:16:40.000 --> 00:16:43.759
and he raised up the screwdriver, stabbing it straight down

289
00:16:44.000 --> 00:16:47.600
through Murray's left eye. Seeing her covered in blood fueled

290
00:16:47.679 --> 00:16:50.440
him sexually, and his drive was in full force as

291
00:16:50.440 --> 00:16:53.480
he ripped off her pants and her underwear, biting her

292
00:16:53.559 --> 00:16:56.240
in the left thigh in the process. By now Derek

293
00:16:56.360 --> 00:16:59.879
was in full rage mode, but he continued to stab Murray,

294
00:17:00.240 --> 00:17:05.759
not ten, not thirty, not fifty, not seventy, but over

295
00:17:05.920 --> 00:17:10.359
eighty times. He then took a knife and cut through

296
00:17:10.400 --> 00:17:14.359
her ears torturously. Murray was nearly dead at this point,

297
00:17:14.400 --> 00:17:18.000
but Derek wasn't done. He pulled up Murray's tank top

298
00:17:18.039 --> 00:17:20.599
and brawl to expose her breasts because it was time

299
00:17:20.640 --> 00:17:24.000
for the climax of his attack. Now that he had

300
00:17:24.039 --> 00:17:27.400
beaten her mercilessly and she was unable to fight back,

301
00:17:27.720 --> 00:17:30.279
he took the knife and he slid it across her

302
00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:35.200
throat before viciously raping her until she was dead. When

303
00:17:35.240 --> 00:17:39.519
he was done, the thrill, now over and panting, he

304
00:17:39.599 --> 00:17:42.799
got back up to his feet, pulled his pants back

305
00:17:42.839 --> 00:17:45.960
on his hips, and zipped them back up. He looked

306
00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:48.319
down at Murray's dead body for a moment, taking it

307
00:17:48.359 --> 00:17:51.920
in before casually stepping over her and walking out of

308
00:17:51.960 --> 00:17:55.720
the very door she opened when he first knocked. No

309
00:17:55.759 --> 00:18:01.759
one heard a thing, no one saw a thing, no

310
00:18:01.759 --> 00:18:06.599
one knew anything had even occurred. He drove away, unscathed

311
00:18:07.000 --> 00:18:11.559
and unnoticed cars passing by none the wiser until Rebecca

312
00:18:11.680 --> 00:18:16.240
finally arrived home roughly thirty minutes later. Walking into the house,

313
00:18:16.279 --> 00:18:18.480
she called out for Murray, but there was no answer.

314
00:18:19.119 --> 00:18:21.400
She dropped her keys on the counter and began walking

315
00:18:21.440 --> 00:18:25.480
to her room when something just wasn't right. Heading into

316
00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:29.319
the small hallway between their rooms, Rebecca's heart dropped as

317
00:18:29.359 --> 00:18:32.200
she saw Murray lying on the floor near the door

318
00:18:32.240 --> 00:18:35.319
and her bed. Murray wasn't moving, and the sight of

319
00:18:35.319 --> 00:18:39.079
her nearly nude and destroyed body was something so unnatural

320
00:18:39.279 --> 00:18:42.599
that it almost caused her to vomit. Just from the doorway,

321
00:18:42.680 --> 00:18:44.880
she could see a ton of small holes in Murray's

322
00:18:44.960 --> 00:18:47.680
chest and stomach. She ran to get the phone, but

323
00:18:47.720 --> 00:18:50.319
she couldn't find it. Before locating her cellphone in the

324
00:18:50.359 --> 00:18:53.319
car to call for help, her hands shook and her

325
00:18:53.359 --> 00:18:56.160
mind raced as she tried to dial the numbers. You're

326
00:18:56.200 --> 00:18:59.839
taught since childhood to dial when an emergency was happening,

327
00:19:00.119 --> 00:19:03.119
But pressing nine one pint one when your friend is

328
00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:05.880
laying bloodied on the ground is harder than you could

329
00:19:05.920 --> 00:19:10.720
ever imagine. The dispatcher answered the call, and Rebecca breathlessly

330
00:19:10.759 --> 00:19:13.519
cried for help, thankful for another person who knew what

331
00:19:13.680 --> 00:19:17.880
to do. The dispatcher asked is she breathing? Is she conscious?

332
00:19:18.279 --> 00:19:21.599
But Rebecca didn't know the answers. The dispatcher asked her

333
00:19:21.599 --> 00:19:24.000
to go back inside and check. Maybe there was still

334
00:19:24.039 --> 00:19:27.599
hope for helping her. Rebecca did as asked, and upon

335
00:19:27.640 --> 00:19:31.440
seeing the sight again, it was almost unbearable. She knelt

336
00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:33.720
down in the blood to check Murray, but upon a

337
00:19:33.759 --> 00:19:36.279
more in depth look, Murray's head was back in a

338
00:19:36.279 --> 00:19:38.720
way that it was obvious her throat was cut open

339
00:19:38.799 --> 00:19:43.920
in a gaping fashion. Horrified and beyond consoling, Rebecca ran

340
00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:46.519
out to the street, sobbing, where she flagged down a

341
00:19:46.559 --> 00:19:50.000
passing police car, who jumped into action, but there was

342
00:19:50.039 --> 00:19:53.839
no action to be done. Twenty two year old Charlotte

343
00:19:53.920 --> 00:19:56.799
Murray Pace was dead and had been through something so

344
00:19:57.000 --> 00:20:00.880
horrific that even seasoned investigators were st by the level

345
00:20:00.880 --> 00:20:04.599
of brutality that she had encountered. When detectives arrived, they

346
00:20:04.640 --> 00:20:08.759
methodically looked over the scene and CSI would process it.

347
00:20:08.759 --> 00:20:12.200
It was determined that no forced entry was there, which

348
00:20:12.200 --> 00:20:14.039
is why a knock at the door was believed to

349
00:20:14.039 --> 00:20:17.279
be the method of entry. Focusing on where her body was,

350
00:20:17.640 --> 00:20:19.720
the iron was believed to be a weapon, as it

351
00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:22.880
was found near Murray's body. The plastic housing was now

352
00:20:22.920 --> 00:20:25.720
in four pieces, and the heating element was covered in

353
00:20:25.759 --> 00:20:30.640
her blood. In complete contradiction was her made bed sheets

354
00:20:30.720 --> 00:20:33.880
neatly tucked in and comforter pulled up. However, now that

355
00:20:34.119 --> 00:20:37.960
very comforter was blood soaked. It wasn't just the bed though.

356
00:20:38.599 --> 00:20:43.039
Blood was found everywhere all over the room and spread

357
00:20:43.039 --> 00:20:46.880
throughout the house. It was on the furniture, the floor,

358
00:20:47.319 --> 00:20:50.319
in the hallway, on the sheet rock in the kitchen,

359
00:20:51.000 --> 00:20:56.000
literally everywhere. Whoever had killed Murray didn't do so easily,

360
00:20:56.359 --> 00:20:58.920
and it was obvious to investigate her. She put up

361
00:20:59.000 --> 00:21:02.720
one hell of a fire. After processing the scene, Murray's

362
00:21:02.720 --> 00:21:05.480
battered and bruised body was taken to the coroner's office,

363
00:21:05.599 --> 00:21:09.559
where doctor Michael Kramer would conduct her autopsy. Doctor Kramer

364
00:21:09.640 --> 00:21:13.160
wasn't new to conducting autopsies of horrifically injured women. Matter

365
00:21:13.200 --> 00:21:16.000
of fact, he was the very same doctor who completed

366
00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:20.000
the autopsy of Gina Green, murdered just weeks prior. Murray's

367
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:22.279
hands had been covered with brown bags at the scene,

368
00:21:22.400 --> 00:21:25.400
and he clipped her fingernails to test for any possible DNA.

369
00:21:26.160 --> 00:21:28.960
He also conducted a rape test kit, taking swabs from

370
00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:32.039
Murray's private areas as well as her breasts and the

371
00:21:32.119 --> 00:21:35.680
area just under her left buttocks. They also swabbed the

372
00:21:35.680 --> 00:21:39.319
apparent bite mark located on her thigh. This was done

373
00:21:39.400 --> 00:21:42.559
because at the scene an alternate light source has been used,

374
00:21:42.599 --> 00:21:46.680
which made these specific areas glow. Glowing is usually indicative

375
00:21:46.680 --> 00:21:49.720
of bodily fluids such as seamen or saliva being present.

376
00:21:50.240 --> 00:21:52.400
Those tests were sent off to the State Police crime

377
00:21:52.480 --> 00:21:57.079
lab for further testing. Overall, doctor Kramer's report listed eighty

378
00:21:57.160 --> 00:21:59.920
one different wounds to Murray's body, and her cause of

379
00:22:00.200 --> 00:22:05.599
death was listed as exanguination bluntly put she literally bled out.

380
00:22:06.319 --> 00:22:09.599
There were two patterns of stab wounds. The killer alternated

381
00:22:09.640 --> 00:22:14.599
between two stabbing tools, likely a flathead screwdriver and a knife.

382
00:22:14.640 --> 00:22:18.240
He also listed blunt force injuries to Murray's head, including

383
00:22:18.279 --> 00:22:22.279
a fractured skull. Both of her eyeballs had blunt trauma

384
00:22:22.319 --> 00:22:26.119
to them. Both her upper and lower extremities were covered

385
00:22:26.359 --> 00:22:31.119
in bruises. Her heart, liver, and her lungs were all

386
00:22:31.160 --> 00:22:35.440
perforated three times each. Her neck was sliced open with

387
00:22:35.519 --> 00:22:39.000
transsection of the cartilage, and her esophagus as well as

388
00:22:39.000 --> 00:22:42.559
her jugular were severed. The damage to her body was

389
00:22:42.599 --> 00:22:47.599
completely and utterly devastating, incompatible with life. To be honest,

390
00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:50.519
the detectives knew that she must have been killed shortly

391
00:22:50.559 --> 00:22:54.039
after arriving home and right before Rebecca returned to find her,

392
00:22:54.240 --> 00:22:56.720
because they found a car wash receipt that was stamped

393
00:22:56.759 --> 00:23:00.200
with a time. They followed up with watching surveillance footage

394
00:23:00.200 --> 00:23:03.440
of her at the car wash. Again, it was midday

395
00:23:03.839 --> 00:23:07.119
roughly twelve thirty, so maybe a delivery man was there,

396
00:23:07.240 --> 00:23:10.079
or possibly a male friend stopped by and things went bad.

397
00:23:10.759 --> 00:23:13.240
Rebecca wouldn't have knocked and would have used her keys.

398
00:23:13.319 --> 00:23:16.240
Plus seaman was at the scene, which ruled her out

399
00:23:16.279 --> 00:23:19.839
in any way. The basic scene showed there was blood

400
00:23:19.839 --> 00:23:23.000
on the VTech phone cordless phone, which makes it seem

401
00:23:23.119 --> 00:23:25.240
like she was either hitting the head with it or

402
00:23:25.279 --> 00:23:29.079
grabbed it after she was already injured. Murray was found

403
00:23:29.160 --> 00:23:32.440
lying between the bed and a dresser, legs spread and

404
00:23:32.519 --> 00:23:35.759
her shirt pulled up, exposing her breasts. Her face was

405
00:23:35.839 --> 00:23:38.680
battered and bruised, mainly in the eye area, and the

406
00:23:38.720 --> 00:23:42.200
skin was torn down on her left side. Gray banana

407
00:23:42.279 --> 00:23:44.680
Republic pants were also found on the bed, but they

408
00:23:44.680 --> 00:23:48.839
were turned inside out. Along with the broken iron, Police

409
00:23:48.880 --> 00:23:51.799
also collected the bottom of a blender. It was found

410
00:23:51.880 --> 00:23:55.480
under a dresser close to where Murray's hand lay. There

411
00:23:55.480 --> 00:24:00.000
were also items missing. Murray's purse, phone, and her keys

412
00:24:00.200 --> 00:24:03.640
were nowhere to be found. Something that would become of

413
00:24:03.720 --> 00:24:07.920
great interest, though, was a shoe print found at the scene,

414
00:24:07.960 --> 00:24:12.200
a Walmart brand men sized ten and a half rawling's

415
00:24:12.400 --> 00:24:16.720
zipstar tennis shoe. Whoever snuffed out the life of beautiful

416
00:24:16.799 --> 00:24:20.160
Murray was wearing these very shoes and stood where that

417
00:24:20.400 --> 00:24:25.119
very print was made. But now he was gone. Had

418
00:24:25.119 --> 00:24:28.240
he been watching and following Murray? Or was this a

419
00:24:28.279 --> 00:24:31.640
well timed random attack. Police knew they would need more

420
00:24:31.680 --> 00:24:35.240
information to make any determination, so for now, the initial

421
00:24:35.279 --> 00:24:37.759
report was written and the results were sent to the

422
00:24:37.799 --> 00:24:41.200
state crime lab that were pending. If DNA were there,

423
00:24:41.519 --> 00:24:44.480
the crime lab would be able to id it. As

424
00:24:44.480 --> 00:24:47.039
people returned home to see crime scene tape around the

425
00:24:47.039 --> 00:24:50.720
town home later that afternoon, they were stunned. This included

426
00:24:50.720 --> 00:24:54.279
neighbor Chris Villemeret. He knew of Murray and he couldn't

427
00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:57.559
fathom someone wanting to harm her. As he thought about

428
00:24:57.559 --> 00:25:00.480
the afternoon, he remembered something that he couldn't and shake.

429
00:25:01.279 --> 00:25:03.759
He left for work about the same time that Murray did,

430
00:25:03.960 --> 00:25:06.559
and as he pulled out, he noticed a man walking

431
00:25:06.599 --> 00:25:09.559
about in the area. He couldn't remember if he was

432
00:25:09.680 --> 00:25:12.319
black or if he was Hispanic, but now that he

433
00:25:12.400 --> 00:25:15.680
thought back about it, he could remember some specifics. The

434
00:25:15.720 --> 00:25:18.559
man was about five foot eight with nappy hair and

435
00:25:18.559 --> 00:25:22.400
a mustache. He was wearing a green shirt and Dicky

436
00:25:22.480 --> 00:25:26.559
brand pants. He also seemed to be fixated on watching

437
00:25:26.640 --> 00:25:29.799
Murray's house, which Chris found weird. As he drove away,

438
00:25:30.839 --> 00:25:33.599
other neighbors would also remember this same man as well,

439
00:25:34.400 --> 00:25:37.640
but then another neighbor would mention a white man. This

440
00:25:37.720 --> 00:25:41.559
is where police work gets tough. Which set of information

441
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:45.920
is correct, what matters, and what doesn't. All of this

442
00:25:46.039 --> 00:25:49.039
takes time to muddle through and discern. But time isn't

443
00:25:49.039 --> 00:25:51.480
something that society is willing to give. When an innocent

444
00:25:51.559 --> 00:25:55.519
girl is murdered in broad daylight, people wanted answers, and

445
00:25:55.559 --> 00:25:59.960
they wanted them now. Unfortunately, though, this was real life

446
00:26:00.000 --> 00:26:02.039
life and not a movie where everything is solved in

447
00:26:02.119 --> 00:26:05.359
one hour. Roughly thirteen days later, an analyst at the

448
00:26:05.400 --> 00:26:09.039
crime lab positively detected seminal fluid from Murray's vaginal and

449
00:26:09.079 --> 00:26:13.119
cervical swabs. The most complete sample, however, was the one

450
00:26:13.160 --> 00:26:16.359
from her left buttocks. This was great news, and that

451
00:26:16.400 --> 00:26:20.240
information was entered into the DNA database of offenders for comparison.

452
00:26:20.880 --> 00:26:25.839
The profile was run locally, statewide, and nationally, but ultimately

453
00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:29.880
it would come back with no hits. Whoever killed Murray

454
00:26:30.160 --> 00:26:33.279
had never committed a crime where DNA was required to

455
00:26:33.319 --> 00:26:36.720
be taken, or he was an offender who was yet

456
00:26:36.759 --> 00:26:40.000
to ever be caught. For now, Murray's murder would be

457
00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:43.440
classified as unsolved, but there was at least a DNA

458
00:26:43.519 --> 00:26:46.839
profile to compare against should the killer ever be arrested.

459
00:26:47.559 --> 00:26:50.400
Mind you, though crime lab employees work in a rather

460
00:26:50.480 --> 00:26:53.880
small world together, they work alongside one another, and of

461
00:26:53.920 --> 00:26:57.559
course they talk about their cases. Two different DNA analysts

462
00:26:57.599 --> 00:27:00.839
at the crime lab were responsible for the DAS reports

463
00:27:00.920 --> 00:27:04.759
and Gina Green's murder and Charlotte Murray Payce's murder, respectively.

464
00:27:05.480 --> 00:27:08.559
Both women were murdered viciously and with no one to

465
00:27:08.599 --> 00:27:12.599
take accountability for it was it possible that these were

466
00:27:12.640 --> 00:27:16.559
connected cases in some way. The DNA analysts at the

467
00:27:16.640 --> 00:27:19.319
lab were discussing their findings in the following days after

468
00:27:19.440 --> 00:27:23.039
Murray's murder, when a fellow analyst with much more experience

469
00:27:23.079 --> 00:27:26.400
in the lab piped up, y'all should compare DNA profiles

470
00:27:26.400 --> 00:27:29.400
in y'all's murder cases. Well, this was an odd thing

471
00:27:29.440 --> 00:27:31.640
to say, and that the analyst and the Gina Green

472
00:27:31.960 --> 00:27:35.440
murder remembered that she had been strangled to death while

473
00:27:35.680 --> 00:27:38.960
Charlotte Murray Pace had been stabbed to death. They were

474
00:27:39.039 --> 00:27:42.240
clearly different methods of killing, so why on earth would

475
00:27:42.240 --> 00:27:45.960
you think that they're related either way? Curiosity got the

476
00:27:46.000 --> 00:27:48.640
best of them, and on July eighth of two thousand

477
00:27:48.680 --> 00:27:53.039
and two, the two analysts did just that. Angela Ross

478
00:27:53.079 --> 00:27:56.160
and Julie Naylor took it upon themselves to compare the

479
00:27:56.279 --> 00:28:00.559
DNA sequence codes. Their method was simple, call them out

480
00:28:00.599 --> 00:28:03.400
to each other and compare as we go. Not expecting

481
00:28:03.480 --> 00:28:07.160
much of anything, they began when, to their absolute shock

482
00:28:07.440 --> 00:28:10.920
they found the two profiles to be an exact match.

483
00:28:11.880 --> 00:28:16.200
What in the world had they really just stumbled upon

484
00:28:16.279 --> 00:28:20.839
a link between the murders. The same person killed both

485
00:28:20.920 --> 00:28:26.079
of these women, but with very different methods. How strange

486
00:28:27.079 --> 00:28:31.559
wouldn't you expect a serial killer to follow this same process, well,

487
00:28:31.599 --> 00:28:35.839
not quite. See. Serial killers may refine their technique for

488
00:28:36.119 --> 00:28:41.200
efficiency or whatever reason, but the underlying fantasy that drives them, now,

489
00:28:41.359 --> 00:28:44.680
that is usually what remains consistent. They may have a

490
00:28:44.720 --> 00:28:48.720
signature approach to killing, I don't know, like maybe knocking

491
00:28:48.759 --> 00:28:51.319
on doors and asking women if they know someone who

492
00:28:51.319 --> 00:28:54.240
doesn't actually live in the area to gain access, But

493
00:28:54.319 --> 00:28:57.160
there's no single one way that the killer will kill

494
00:28:57.200 --> 00:29:00.519
in all circumstances. The circumstances at the time of the

495
00:29:00.599 --> 00:29:03.880
attack will determine how they kill. So Now, in the

496
00:29:04.000 --> 00:29:07.839
small lab, DNA analysts had a secret, not one that

497
00:29:07.839 --> 00:29:10.559
they would keep to themselves, of course, but something certainly

498
00:29:10.599 --> 00:29:13.200
not yet known to the public. This information would be

499
00:29:13.240 --> 00:29:16.160
relayed to investigators, which would spark a new fire in

500
00:29:16.240 --> 00:29:19.680
the life of these murders, something detectives on Murray and

501
00:29:19.759 --> 00:29:23.400
Gina's cases didn't know yet. But what they did know

502
00:29:23.960 --> 00:29:26.880
was that witnesses in both areas said they saw a

503
00:29:26.960 --> 00:29:30.839
white male in a white truck around both women's homes

504
00:29:31.079 --> 00:29:33.720
at the same time that their murders had occurred. The

505
00:29:33.799 --> 00:29:36.839
detectives on either case didn't yet know about the DNA

506
00:29:36.920 --> 00:29:41.720
length though, However, the very next day before the investigators

507
00:29:41.759 --> 00:29:46.119
could even be formally notified of the crime lab analyst's findings.

508
00:29:46.240 --> 00:29:51.039
Just about an hour's drive southwest of Baton Rouge in Broughbridge, Louisiana,

509
00:29:51.400 --> 00:29:53.839
a woman named Diane was about to get a knock

510
00:29:53.920 --> 00:29:57.559
at her front door from a lost stranger. Did she

511
00:29:57.680 --> 00:30:01.359
know where the Montgomerys were, and, if not, was her

512
00:30:01.440 --> 00:30:02.559
husband home by chance
