DTL - Part 11: The Whiskey Bay

DTL - Part 11: The Whiskey Bay

Pam Kinamore, a beloved Baton Rouge area interior designer vanished without a trace on July 12th, days later, her brutalized body was discovered near Whiskey Bay with her throat slashed—through groundbreaking DNA evidence, confirmation would come, that the Baton Rouge area had a Serial Killer stalking and killing unsuspecting women. Derrick Todd Lee (DTL) terrorized the Baton Rouge and Lafayette Louisiana. A Serial Killer who took the lives of at least (7) women in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Lee’s reign of terror finally ended in late May of 2003 when he was captured in Atlanta, GA after being linked by DNA to several of the murders.

WEBVTT

1
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:12.839
In the sultry heat of Louisiana, where the bayous whisper

2
00:00:12.919 --> 00:00:16.079
secrets and the air hangs heavy with the scent of magnolias,

3
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:20.480
a darkness lurked beneath the surface. Derrick Todd Lee was

4
00:00:20.480 --> 00:00:23.199
a man whose charm masked a sinister reality.

5
00:00:23.839 --> 00:00:24.679
He was a monster.

6
00:00:25.359 --> 00:00:29.039
Lee, a seemingly ordinary man with a disarming smile, led

7
00:00:29.079 --> 00:00:31.559
a double life that would unravel in a series of

8
00:00:31.640 --> 00:00:34.200
murders in the capital city of Baton Rouge and the

9
00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:38.280
surrounding areas. As the first reports of disappearances and murders

10
00:00:38.320 --> 00:00:42.119
began to surface, South Louisiana was thrust into a nightmare,

11
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:46.000
igniting a frantic search for answers. The true horror was

12
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:49.280
just beginning, and the hunt for a serial killer, eventually

13
00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:52.000
known by just three letters, would reveal not only the

14
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.520
depths of Dereck Todd Lee's depravity, but also the resilience

15
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:58.479
of those most affected by his evil acts, the families

16
00:00:58.759 --> 00:00:59.719
and the survivors.

17
00:01:00.159 --> 00:01:01.479
This is DTL.

18
00:01:10.920 --> 00:01:14.040
Mumblings of a possible serial killer had begun to swirl.

19
00:01:14.400 --> 00:01:17.519
Two women brutally murdered were the focal point of the moment.

20
00:01:17.799 --> 00:01:22.200
Gina Green and Murray Pace but everyone on Elishu's campus

21
00:01:22.439 --> 00:01:25.319
was on edge, by the grace of God and through

22
00:01:25.319 --> 00:01:27.319
a son who listened when his daddy said go straight

23
00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:31.079
home after class. Diane Alexander's life had been spared, yet

24
00:01:31.079 --> 00:01:34.200
her recovery was nowhere near as fast as me moving

25
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:36.959
on to another victim. There should be an episode on

26
00:01:36.959 --> 00:01:40.439
her recovery time alone. However, Derek Todd Lee didn't give

27
00:01:40.480 --> 00:01:44.719
time for recovery. No one could rest, no one could breathe.

28
00:01:45.159 --> 00:01:48.400
He was now killing and trying to kill in much

29
00:01:48.439 --> 00:01:52.079
closer spurts than when he first started. But in this moment,

30
00:01:52.359 --> 00:01:55.200
it's important to note that Diane's son, Hermann, had information

31
00:01:55.439 --> 00:01:58.799
burned into his mind, something he saw when he ran

32
00:01:58.840 --> 00:02:00.680
out of the home in an atte to catch the

33
00:02:00.879 --> 00:02:04.359
animal who had just tried to kill his mother. Although

34
00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:06.280
he was unable to get his hands on the would

35
00:02:06.280 --> 00:02:09.240
be killer, he was able to put his eyes on

36
00:02:09.360 --> 00:02:13.000
him and guess what Hampton has it? Now?

37
00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:14.080
What am I talking about?

38
00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:14.879
Well?

39
00:02:14.919 --> 00:02:17.000
This was the logo on the bumper.

40
00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:19.520
Sticker of the gold vehicle the man sped away in.

41
00:02:20.120 --> 00:02:22.639
Much like a tattoo can help to identify a suspect,

42
00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.840
a bumper sticker acts in the same way a vehicle

43
00:02:25.879 --> 00:02:29.560
tattoo of sorts something that makes it unique. Everyone in

44
00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:32.240
the investigation at least was on the lookout for a

45
00:02:32.319 --> 00:02:35.719
gold Mitsubishi Mirage with the Hampton has its sticker slapped

46
00:02:35.800 --> 00:02:39.960
right there on the back. Also, Hermann saw a beige

47
00:02:40.039 --> 00:02:42.919
computer cord hanging out of the window, which, if found,

48
00:02:43.439 --> 00:02:46.680
might lead them to the attempted killer of Diane should

49
00:02:46.719 --> 00:02:50.199
he keep it. That very tool he chose to try

50
00:02:50.240 --> 00:02:53.639
and strangle the life from Diane was in fact now

51
00:02:53.680 --> 00:02:57.840
his trophy, his reminder of what he had done. He

52
00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:01.599
also left behind two vital pieces of evidence at the scene,

53
00:03:01.639 --> 00:03:03.879
the other end of the telephone cord he had cut,

54
00:03:04.159 --> 00:03:07.520
as well as his DNA on Diane's dress. The crime

55
00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:10.360
lab would have to complete their evaluations and testing, which

56
00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:14.919
as always takes time until that DNA was back. It

57
00:03:15.000 --> 00:03:18.159
was simply a waiting game now. Previous episode I also

58
00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:21.400
mentioned a press conference that worried Diane since her attempted

59
00:03:21.479 --> 00:03:24.960
killer would now know that she had survived, But that

60
00:03:25.120 --> 00:03:29.759
press conference wasn't actually held until after the following events

61
00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:30.879
I'm about.

62
00:03:30.599 --> 00:03:31.800
To tell you took place.

63
00:03:32.439 --> 00:03:36.479
Time though it was ticking time that was precious for

64
00:03:36.560 --> 00:03:41.360
another woman whose hourglass sand was running out. Just three

65
00:03:41.719 --> 00:03:45.360
days after Diane's near brush with death, forty four year

66
00:03:45.360 --> 00:03:49.120
old Pamela Kennemore was living her quiet, yet well manicured life.

67
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:52.479
And I say this because Pam was quite possibly one

68
00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:56.639
of the most beautiful women and put together women in town.

69
00:03:57.159 --> 00:04:02.280
She was graceful and elegant, fun yet poised, effortlessly beautiful,

70
00:04:02.479 --> 00:04:06.439
and always well dressed. Her beauty, however, didn't affect her

71
00:04:06.479 --> 00:04:10.520
heart towards others. She made them feel loved and welcome always.

72
00:04:11.039 --> 00:04:13.599
They would never know that she was a beauty queen

73
00:04:13.719 --> 00:04:16.720
in days gone by. Her goals now were to create

74
00:04:16.800 --> 00:04:21.920
functional and beautiful indoor spaces as an interior designer. To

75
00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:24.000
give you more of an idea as to her life.

76
00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:27.720
She also loved to acquire and sell antiques. She had

77
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:30.399
a small store in the antique district of my hometown,

78
00:04:30.759 --> 00:04:34.480
Denham Springs, Louisiana. The antique district is now a one

79
00:04:34.519 --> 00:04:37.199
way street that extends about a half mile long, but

80
00:04:37.279 --> 00:04:39.879
it's full of antique stores on both sides of the road.

81
00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:43.040
Today those stores differ a bit, but the feel is

82
00:04:43.079 --> 00:04:46.639
the same. People lazily walk the street and mosey in

83
00:04:46.680 --> 00:04:49.319
and out of the stores with bags full of one

84
00:04:49.399 --> 00:04:50.480
of a kind treasure's.

85
00:04:50.959 --> 00:04:53.079
Well, at least it feels that way.

86
00:04:53.399 --> 00:04:56.959
Pam loved that slow, small town feel and the idea

87
00:04:57.040 --> 00:04:59.879
that old items could be curated in a new way,

88
00:05:00.240 --> 00:05:03.920
making a home unique with an old time feel, warm

89
00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:07.600
and comfy and cozy, like the way your grandmother's home

90
00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:10.199
could make you feel. And I guess that was fitting

91
00:05:10.240 --> 00:05:13.199
in that the name of her store was Comforts and Joys.

92
00:05:13.920 --> 00:05:16.680
Pam was an accomplished woman whose roots were in New Orleans,

93
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:19.480
where she was originally born. She would move to Metori

94
00:05:19.560 --> 00:05:21.720
for a bit before settling in Baton Rouge for the

95
00:05:21.800 --> 00:05:25.160
last twenty years of her life. She graduated from Sacred

96
00:05:25.199 --> 00:05:27.720
Heart of Jesus High School and then would enroll at

97
00:05:27.720 --> 00:05:32.839
Loyola University before ultimately graduating from Louisiana State University with

98
00:05:32.920 --> 00:05:36.319
a degree in Fine Arts. Pam even put herself through

99
00:05:36.360 --> 00:05:39.519
college with money she raised by winning the Miss Jefferson

100
00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:41.040
Parish beauty contest.

101
00:05:41.439 --> 00:05:42.120
The rules and.

102
00:05:42.079 --> 00:05:44.680
Winning proceeds were different back then as compared to today,

103
00:05:45.079 --> 00:05:48.839
but she was proof that award winning beauty wasn't just superficial. No,

104
00:05:49.680 --> 00:05:52.079
she would be able to continue her education with the

105
00:05:52.079 --> 00:05:56.319
winnings rather than just blow it. Beauty and brains a

106
00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:00.000
dominating combination for any woman to have, and that said,

107
00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:05.120
she loved everything about creating a home, not just decorating it,

108
00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:08.000
but also buying it, and this is why she would

109
00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:11.279
become a Louisiana licensed realtor. She did work as a

110
00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:14.600
mortgage representative with First Union Mortgage Company for a while too,

111
00:06:14.920 --> 00:06:18.199
which even in that realm, she was an exceptional employee,

112
00:06:18.439 --> 00:06:21.079
and this was evidenced by her winning several company awards

113
00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:25.000
while there. Most importantly, though regardless of all of her

114
00:06:25.000 --> 00:06:30.519
other accomplishments and winnings, Pamela Kinnemore loved Jesus. She knew

115
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:33.160
that God always had her and that she could face

116
00:06:33.279 --> 00:06:36.720
every day with the love, comfort, and joy that only

117
00:06:36.759 --> 00:06:40.720
a savior could provide. Her loving mother, Lynne, had instilled

118
00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:43.240
in her since youth that we need something greater than

119
00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:46.519
ourselves and that God is that thing. Pam liked to

120
00:06:46.519 --> 00:06:48.959
be busy and she liked to be useful, which meant

121
00:06:49.079 --> 00:06:51.800
she was an active member of Parkview Baptist Church and

122
00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:54.839
was known to be very involved at the school. Pam,

123
00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:58.360
after all, was one third of a beautiful family. Pam's

124
00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:01.279
maiden name was Piglia, but when she laid eyes on

125
00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:06.959
Byron Kennimore, it was over. That man had her heart

126
00:07:07.240 --> 00:07:10.279
from the Jump Hall. Word on the street was that

127
00:07:10.319 --> 00:07:12.879
Pam once dated the likes of a senator at one point,

128
00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:16.839
but he paled in comparison to old Byron. They met

129
00:07:16.839 --> 00:07:19.759
at a friend's house and Honey, like I said, over

130
00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:25.199
before it started, Pam Piglia was straight up smitten. Now.

131
00:07:25.240 --> 00:07:27.959
Byron had been handed a severe blow years before that

132
00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:31.399
altered his life forever. A vehicle accident would render him

133
00:07:31.399 --> 00:07:35.279
wheelchair bound, but that never mattered to Pam. Her love

134
00:07:35.319 --> 00:07:38.360
may always be seated, but all she saw was a

135
00:07:38.439 --> 00:07:42.360
strapping and stunningly handsome man, and she fell quickly in

136
00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:45.480
love with him. Pam was in tears when Byron proposed

137
00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:47.560
to her. She would get to marry the love of

138
00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:52.519
her life and become the Miss Byron Kinnimore. Matter of fact,

139
00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:55.800
when they got married after saying their ideas, Pam sat

140
00:07:55.839 --> 00:07:58.319
in his lap as he wheeled her down the aisle.

141
00:07:58.600 --> 00:08:02.360
Now together as a man and wife, conceiving was an issue.

142
00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:05.839
Even after multiple failed rounds of in vitro, they didn't

143
00:08:05.920 --> 00:08:09.360
quit though they just changed direction. God knew that there

144
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:12.360
was a baby out there who needed this couple specifically,

145
00:08:12.759 --> 00:08:16.040
and together they would end up adopting their precious son,

146
00:08:16.439 --> 00:08:19.199
making their family complete. After they made her dream of

147
00:08:19.240 --> 00:08:22.560
becoming a mother a reality, Pam would return the favor,

148
00:08:22.639 --> 00:08:26.199
becoming a devoted member of the organization and participating in

149
00:08:26.279 --> 00:08:29.360
things such as galas and other events. The family settled

150
00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:31.600
into a home in Baton Rouge, which was a relatively

151
00:08:31.639 --> 00:08:34.279
reasonable drive to and from her shop in Denim Springs.

152
00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:37.120
It was July twelfth, two thousand and two, when Pam

153
00:08:37.159 --> 00:08:39.480
returned home from her shop and was going about her

154
00:08:39.480 --> 00:08:43.200
typical evening tasks and ladies, we all have our things

155
00:08:43.279 --> 00:08:46.159
that we do at night. We draw a bath, scrub

156
00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:49.799
our face, moisturize, and maybe even apply some good smelling

157
00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:53.200
lotion before cuddling up in bed. Pam was no different.

158
00:08:53.799 --> 00:08:56.559
She was ready for a hot bath and some warm supper.

159
00:08:57.519 --> 00:09:00.320
Husband Byron he would be home after her, and he

160
00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:04.039
arrived as expected some time later. Pam's vehicle was parked

161
00:09:04.039 --> 00:09:06.440
in the driveway as usual as he made his way inside,

162
00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:09.799
ready for a calm and relaxing evening at home with

163
00:09:09.919 --> 00:09:13.080
his bride, But from the moment he entered the door,

164
00:09:13.480 --> 00:09:17.559
something in the air was just different. He noticed her

165
00:09:17.799 --> 00:09:20.279
wallet and her watch were sitting on the kitchen table,

166
00:09:20.320 --> 00:09:24.240
but the house was just so quiet. Pam didn't come

167
00:09:24.279 --> 00:09:26.720
around the corner or answer him whenever he announced that

168
00:09:26.759 --> 00:09:30.120
he was there, and Byron wheeled through the house looking

169
00:09:30.120 --> 00:09:32.519
for Pam, all the while knowing in his gut that

170
00:09:32.720 --> 00:09:36.840
something wasn't normal. When he made it back to their bedroom,

171
00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:40.600
things became very clear that guttural instinct of a problem

172
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:44.279
came to fruition. As you can imagine, Pam had created

173
00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:47.720
a beautiful bedroom that was orderly and neat, but the

174
00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:50.919
bedroom furniture looked like it was bumped out of normal position,

175
00:09:51.559 --> 00:09:54.799
not tossed or dumped or flipped over, but just pushed

176
00:09:54.879 --> 00:09:58.519
out of the way slightly. Looking on the ground, Byron

177
00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:01.919
then noticed spots of blood on the bedroom rug. Was

178
00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:05.159
Pam hurt? Maybe she fell or passed out, Maybe she

179
00:10:05.200 --> 00:10:08.200
had her nose. But if that's the case, where was she?

180
00:10:09.080 --> 00:10:11.919
The confusion was now starting to turn to panic. He

181
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:13.960
made his way into the bathroom, where the sight of

182
00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:17.679
a full tub of water was even more distressing. Pam

183
00:10:17.679 --> 00:10:20.639
would never leave the tub full of water, and certainly

184
00:10:20.679 --> 00:10:22.960
would never draw a bath and then leave the house

185
00:10:23.480 --> 00:10:27.000
and bleeding at that, that can't be anyway, because her

186
00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:31.200
car was still on the driveway, He rolled forward and leaned,

187
00:10:31.799 --> 00:10:34.799
sticking his fingers out and touching the water. He drew back,

188
00:10:34.840 --> 00:10:38.080
realizing it was ice cold. The water must have been

189
00:10:38.120 --> 00:10:42.639
sitting there for some time. How long had Pam been gone?

190
00:10:42.759 --> 00:10:45.919
Iron called around looking for her, and then eventually, when

191
00:10:45.919 --> 00:10:48.639
he couldn't find her in the backyard or anywhere for

192
00:10:48.679 --> 00:10:51.399
that matter, he then resigned himself to the fact that

193
00:10:51.480 --> 00:10:55.120
Pam was gone. He had no options left except to

194
00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:58.000
call police and report her as a missing person with

195
00:10:58.039 --> 00:11:01.639
suspicious circumstances. The police were now on their way to

196
00:11:01.720 --> 00:11:05.279
Pam's home, but she was nowhere near it. She was

197
00:11:05.320 --> 00:11:07.759
in the vehicle of a man she didn't know. She

198
00:11:07.799 --> 00:11:10.440
had been taken against her will and was currently now

199
00:11:10.480 --> 00:11:14.720
heading to an unknown location. She was also injured and bleeding,

200
00:11:15.159 --> 00:11:18.639
so as police drove closer to her Briarwood home, Pam

201
00:11:18.679 --> 00:11:21.480
at that same time, was being carried further and further

202
00:11:21.639 --> 00:11:24.440
away from it. She lay naked in a truck and

203
00:11:24.519 --> 00:11:26.240
all she could see were the tail lights of the

204
00:11:26.279 --> 00:11:28.399
cars in front of her as she was being driven

205
00:11:28.440 --> 00:11:31.480
down a long bridge. The clanking of the tires passing

206
00:11:31.480 --> 00:11:34.559
over tie bars which connected the pieces of asphalt that

207
00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:38.039
was the only noise being made. Her driver had his

208
00:11:38.120 --> 00:11:40.720
eyes locked on the road and didn't make conversation other

209
00:11:40.759 --> 00:11:44.120
than the occasional I ain't gonna do you nothing. The

210
00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:46.960
passing lights of cars going in the opposite direction made

211
00:11:47.000 --> 00:11:49.799
it obvious that they were moving fast. Matter of fact,

212
00:11:49.799 --> 00:11:53.000
they were traveling down the Chafalaya Basin Bridge, the one

213
00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:56.840
that connects Baton Rouge to Lafayette, a bridge that any

214
00:11:56.840 --> 00:12:00.600
local nose is a long one, almost twenty miles to exact,

215
00:12:00.759 --> 00:12:03.679
and currently the third longest bridge in the United States.

216
00:12:04.519 --> 00:12:07.840
Everyone local also knows that there's nothing but bayou and

217
00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:11.159
marsh water below the bridge. Occasionally you'll see trucks that

218
00:12:11.159 --> 00:12:13.559
have exited and parked with their trailers as they head

219
00:12:13.559 --> 00:12:17.279
out fishing, but other than that, there's no reason to exit,

220
00:12:17.519 --> 00:12:19.559
and there's only two exits on the bridge for that

221
00:12:19.759 --> 00:12:20.320
very reason.

222
00:12:20.759 --> 00:12:23.000
Whiskey Bay and Butte l Rose.

223
00:12:23.399 --> 00:12:26.320
Both exits serving as places where local Cajuns have their

224
00:12:26.320 --> 00:12:29.120
camp set up and they can crawfish. Those murky waters.

225
00:12:29.720 --> 00:12:32.399
It's not a place where the average passer by would

226
00:12:32.440 --> 00:12:36.240
stop unless they had an emergency or maybe something more

227
00:12:36.240 --> 00:12:40.000
sinister in mind. As Pamelay injured in the vehicle, an

228
00:12:40.039 --> 00:12:42.799
eighteen wheeler with years of experience on the road passed

229
00:12:42.799 --> 00:12:45.799
by the truck being driven by Pam's attacker. So as

230
00:12:45.799 --> 00:12:48.039
you can imagine being a trucker for a long time,

231
00:12:48.360 --> 00:12:51.080
you can bet that that driver had seen some things.

232
00:12:51.480 --> 00:12:53.320
Riding that high in the air, you can see down

233
00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:57.039
into vehicles without even trying women with big boobs, people

234
00:12:57.080 --> 00:12:59.960
acting crazy in their vehicles, held even the naked person,

235
00:13:00.039 --> 00:13:02.960
and from time to time that was nothing new. And

236
00:13:03.039 --> 00:13:05.919
on this evening, that trucker looked down and saw a

237
00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:09.159
naked woman inside the truck riding next to him. But

238
00:13:09.240 --> 00:13:11.519
by now the police were at the Kennemore home, and

239
00:13:11.559 --> 00:13:15.200
as they looked through they agreed that something sinister had happened.

240
00:13:15.559 --> 00:13:17.600
Pam Kennemore had not left.

241
00:13:17.360 --> 00:13:17.919
On her own.

242
00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:20.519
It doesn't take a genius to see that her car

243
00:13:20.600 --> 00:13:23.080
was still there in the driveway, and blood droplets in

244
00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:26.519
the house aren't normal. But as you can expect, the

245
00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:30.919
initial investigation would start with Pam's innermost circle and quite frankly,

246
00:13:31.320 --> 00:13:34.399
Byron became the focus. What time did you get home,

247
00:13:34.440 --> 00:13:39.399
mister Byron? Oh's probably around eleven forty five pm. When

248
00:13:39.399 --> 00:13:41.519
do you think Pam got home? Well, it had to

249
00:13:41.559 --> 00:13:44.360
be around ten or so. Where was she coming from?

250
00:13:44.840 --> 00:13:47.919
The antique store? We have one in Denim Springs. The

251
00:13:47.960 --> 00:13:49.799
fact was that a lamp from the store was now

252
00:13:49.879 --> 00:13:52.720
inside their house, so it looked like Pam had arrived

253
00:13:52.759 --> 00:13:56.039
home somewhere around ten, carried the lamp inside the house

254
00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:58.840
and possibly forgot her keys in the door as her

255
00:13:58.919 --> 00:14:02.919
arms were full carry in the items. The questions continued

256
00:14:02.960 --> 00:14:06.759
on and on and on, but eventually Byron was ruled out.

257
00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:09.919
He had been at the nearby Argusy casino enjoying the evening,

258
00:14:10.080 --> 00:14:13.919
and camera footage would back up his alibi. Pam would

259
00:14:13.919 --> 00:14:16.360
go with him from time to time to the casino,

260
00:14:16.399 --> 00:14:20.200
but gambling really wasn't her thing. But the buffet, heck, yeah,

261
00:14:20.480 --> 00:14:23.639
she loved eating with him there at that buffet. Byron

262
00:14:23.960 --> 00:14:27.240
was madly in love with Pam and she him. This

263
00:14:27.480 --> 00:14:31.360
wasn't a marital dispute turned bad. It was obvious to police.

264
00:14:31.679 --> 00:14:36.120
He was just devastated. The minutes rolled into hours, and

265
00:14:36.200 --> 00:14:38.320
before they knew it. The sun was coming up on

266
00:14:38.399 --> 00:14:43.200
the next day, but Pam she never returned home. Byron

267
00:14:43.200 --> 00:14:45.360
made a call to his pastor, Bill Prewett, and he

268
00:14:45.399 --> 00:14:47.039
had to break the news to him that Pam was

269
00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:50.639
missing and it wasn't looking good. The pastor was in

270
00:14:50.639 --> 00:14:52.519
the middle of moving into his new home. He had

271
00:14:52.559 --> 00:14:55.679
trucks full of possessions and men showing up to help,

272
00:14:55.960 --> 00:14:58.799
but Pastor Prewett knew in his gut that this was

273
00:14:58.840 --> 00:15:01.840
way more important. He and his wife, Sonya were close

274
00:15:01.879 --> 00:15:04.799
to the Kennimares in their everyday lives. Not only was

275
00:15:04.840 --> 00:15:08.519
Pastor Prewitt Byron's pastor, but his wife, Sonya, was Jacob's

276
00:15:08.519 --> 00:15:11.840
Bible teacher at Parkview Baptist School. They had been friends

277
00:15:11.840 --> 00:15:14.519
with the kennem Wares before Jacob was even adopted, so

278
00:15:14.600 --> 00:15:18.879
they went way back Bill, Pam's gone and it doesn't

279
00:15:18.919 --> 00:15:22.360
look good. Those were the only words Bill Prewett needed

280
00:15:22.399 --> 00:15:24.360
to hear to stop what he was doing and head

281
00:15:24.360 --> 00:15:28.240
straight to the Kennimore residence. When the pastor arrived, Pam's

282
00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:31.480
family was there as well as the police. He immediately

283
00:15:31.519 --> 00:15:33.799
gave Byron one of those hugs men give each other

284
00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:37.799
where it's really, really tight, and it's purposeful one that says, look, man,

285
00:15:37.919 --> 00:15:39.799
I know that you're a man, but I am here

286
00:15:39.840 --> 00:15:42.559
too to be strong with you in the hardest of times.

287
00:15:43.200 --> 00:15:45.200
And then they did what they knew they had to do.

288
00:15:45.759 --> 00:15:49.480
They bowed their heads and they prayed. The pastor then

289
00:15:49.480 --> 00:15:51.200
made a call to his wife, Sonya, who was in

290
00:15:51.279 --> 00:15:54.600
Florida visiting family, and broke the news to her, and

291
00:15:54.679 --> 00:15:58.120
being a devoted pastor's wife, she immediately packed her things

292
00:15:58.360 --> 00:16:01.600
and drove back home because she had one person on

293
00:16:01.679 --> 00:16:06.200
her mind, and that was young Jacob. Luckily, though, Jacob

294
00:16:06.279 --> 00:16:09.360
was already surrounded by a pack of women who fiercely

295
00:16:09.399 --> 00:16:13.879
loved him, including Pam's mother, Lynn and his aunts. Until

296
00:16:13.919 --> 00:16:17.120
Pam returned home, they would ensure that he was cared

297
00:16:17.159 --> 00:16:19.960
for and that he was loved. Now there was no

298
00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:22.039
doubt his father loved him and was caring for him

299
00:16:22.039 --> 00:16:25.639
as well. But this was devastating, and Byron's focus was

300
00:16:25.720 --> 00:16:29.879
understandably on finding his wife. As community members, family, and

301
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:33.440
church folk alike all came together with efforts to locate

302
00:16:33.600 --> 00:16:36.879
beautiful Pam. People did what they could in a time

303
00:16:36.919 --> 00:16:40.960
where everyone truly felt helpless. One church member owned a

304
00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:43.399
printing company and offered to print all of the flyers

305
00:16:43.440 --> 00:16:47.320
necessary to cope the town with Pam's face. If Pam

306
00:16:47.399 --> 00:16:49.840
was being held, people would know what she looked like,

307
00:16:50.200 --> 00:16:54.200
and maybe, just maybe someone would see her and recognize her.

308
00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:57.919
People spread out in an organized fashion, led by Pam's

309
00:16:57.960 --> 00:17:01.480
force of nature, mother Lynn and care. If Pam was ten,

310
00:17:01.919 --> 00:17:05.200
fifty or one hundred years old, Pam would always be

311
00:17:05.319 --> 00:17:08.720
her baby girl, and Lynn was ready to fight for her.

312
00:17:09.200 --> 00:17:11.559
And the truth is, busy is good for a broken

313
00:17:11.599 --> 00:17:16.160
heart and a whirling mind full of despair. Goals give purpose.

314
00:17:16.519 --> 00:17:19.759
Handing out the flyers gave hope. It kept people busy,

315
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:23.839
It kept Pam alive for the time being. No one

316
00:17:23.880 --> 00:17:26.079
wanted to just sit there, and so they did what

317
00:17:26.119 --> 00:17:28.640
they could to try and draw attention to her disappearance.

318
00:17:29.000 --> 00:17:33.480
And guess what, it worked. People like myself were paying attention.

319
00:17:34.160 --> 00:17:37.279
The public was seeing the pattern of women being killed

320
00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:41.000
and now going missing. We weren't stupid, and we knew

321
00:17:41.079 --> 00:17:43.880
the stakes were high. You could see it in the

322
00:17:43.920 --> 00:17:46.839
eyes of women in the store, at the church, and

323
00:17:46.880 --> 00:17:48.920
in the line at schools to pick up our children.

324
00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:53.440
We were being hunted, but with no known cause, and

325
00:17:53.480 --> 00:17:58.039
Now Pam someone who loved Jesus and sold antiques. My god,

326
00:17:58.359 --> 00:18:01.759
who preys upon someone like that? And let's be honest

327
00:18:01.759 --> 00:18:04.839
for a minute. When a prostitute goes missing, no one

328
00:18:04.920 --> 00:18:08.680
is shocked. When a homeless person gets killed, it's like

329
00:18:08.799 --> 00:18:12.279
a soul blowing in the wind, no ties to community,

330
00:18:12.480 --> 00:18:15.200
and no one close enough to mourn on a big scale.

331
00:18:15.720 --> 00:18:18.880
It's really sad to say this, but it's true. The

332
00:18:18.960 --> 00:18:21.759
collective belief is often that their lifestyle in some way

333
00:18:21.839 --> 00:18:24.359
led to their disappearance, whether that's true or not.

334
00:18:25.240 --> 00:18:29.039
But Pam, she was an ideal member of society. It

335
00:18:29.279 --> 00:18:30.039
just didn't fit.

336
00:18:30.720 --> 00:18:33.759
But really neither did any of the other women now

337
00:18:33.839 --> 00:18:38.759
dead or nearly killed. They were all productive, attractive.

338
00:18:38.279 --> 00:18:39.480
And good people.

339
00:18:40.319 --> 00:18:44.960
This made everyone scared, and I do mean everyone. Men

340
00:18:45.000 --> 00:18:47.640
were now scared not only for their wives, but their

341
00:18:47.759 --> 00:18:51.000
own daughters and their own mothers. This killer was attacking

342
00:18:51.079 --> 00:18:54.960
young and older women. He was attacking both black and

343
00:18:55.119 --> 00:18:58.160
white women. And on that note, let's talk about a

344
00:18:58.200 --> 00:19:01.759
killer's victim choice for a moment. White serial killers tend

345
00:19:01.799 --> 00:19:04.920
to kill white victims, and black serial killers tend to

346
00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:08.000
kill black victims. Now, Pam's mom was at the forefront

347
00:19:08.039 --> 00:19:11.359
of everything being done, leading the army per se. A

348
00:19:11.720 --> 00:19:17.000
miserable three days crept by until news came, but it

349
00:19:17.039 --> 00:19:22.000
was nothing anyone wanted to hear. Back off the Achaffelai

350
00:19:22.119 --> 00:19:25.519
Basin Bridge. On July sixteenth, a survey crew was working

351
00:19:25.640 --> 00:19:28.079
just south of the Whisky Bay exit on Interstate ten

352
00:19:28.480 --> 00:19:31.559
when they came upon something completely unexpected in their line

353
00:19:31.559 --> 00:19:34.400
of work. It was just around ten am on June

354
00:19:34.400 --> 00:19:37.759
sixteenth when workers called nine one one after discovering the

355
00:19:37.880 --> 00:19:41.400
nude body of a woman under Whisky Bay Exit. There

356
00:19:41.440 --> 00:19:43.920
was an embankment there on a small inlet, and she

357
00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:47.519
was partially covered with brush. Her body was in really,

358
00:19:48.079 --> 00:19:51.599
really bad shape. Decomposition had taken its toll in the

359
00:19:51.599 --> 00:19:55.440
blazing heat and humidity of South Louisiana. The smell of

360
00:19:55.480 --> 00:19:58.759
death is something you never forget. While you may not

361
00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:02.279
smell it days or we weeks later, your mind remembers

362
00:20:02.319 --> 00:20:06.960
the sharp, sour and putrid smell of something dead and rotting.

363
00:20:07.279 --> 00:20:12.200
And unfortunately this was the case for the once beautiful Pam.

364
00:20:12.359 --> 00:20:16.240
As detectives arrived on scene, they processed and had it photographed,

365
00:20:16.640 --> 00:20:19.640
and something odd was found near her body. Odd for

366
00:20:19.680 --> 00:20:22.920
the location at least a phone cord that was cut

367
00:20:22.960 --> 00:20:26.799
from a computer. Whoever dropped this body here did so

368
00:20:26.920 --> 00:20:30.279
with intention, betting on the isolation of the area to

369
00:20:30.480 --> 00:20:34.599
aid in a going undetected. He expected the murky water

370
00:20:34.720 --> 00:20:38.200
full of alligators and other scavengers to take care of

371
00:20:38.240 --> 00:20:42.680
the wife and the mother he had stolen. He had

372
00:20:42.799 --> 00:20:46.559
murdered her to satiate his wants and desires, and now

373
00:20:46.640 --> 00:20:51.640
dumped her under a desolate stretch of highway full of cypress, knees, crawfish,

374
00:20:51.680 --> 00:20:55.680
and usually no people. But I guess this killer forgot

375
00:20:55.720 --> 00:20:58.240
that real men have jobs and they keep them if

376
00:20:58.240 --> 00:21:01.960
they're good employees. And those very types of men are

377
00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:04.559
the ones who found beautiful Pam in a condition that

378
00:21:04.720 --> 00:21:09.559
screamed brutalization. Only an autopsy would tell exactly the horrors

379
00:21:09.599 --> 00:21:12.000
of what had happened to Pam, But not before the

380
00:21:12.079 --> 00:21:14.920
phone rang and Byron received the news that his wife

381
00:21:15.079 --> 00:21:20.160
was found. Unfortunately, though she wouldn't be returning home. Police

382
00:21:20.200 --> 00:21:22.440
asked Byron if he would be able to identify the body,

383
00:21:22.480 --> 00:21:26.359
which he agreed, But preparation, no matter how bluntly stated,

384
00:21:26.680 --> 00:21:29.480
was never enough for the sight of his beloved On

385
00:21:29.599 --> 00:21:33.680
that table, the gold ring still on her hand, signifying

386
00:21:33.720 --> 00:21:38.119
that truth. Pam never took it off. That vow was real,

387
00:21:38.599 --> 00:21:41.759
and it was true, the date of their marriage inscribed

388
00:21:41.799 --> 00:21:44.720
inside the band, a forever memento of what that date

389
00:21:44.799 --> 00:21:49.079
meant to them both. And now here she lay, someone

390
00:21:49.119 --> 00:21:52.599
had violated his beloved in ways that only evil.

391
00:21:52.319 --> 00:21:53.079
Could ever do.

392
00:21:53.880 --> 00:21:57.640
Byron's most precious gift, aside from his son, was now

393
00:21:57.759 --> 00:22:01.319
gone at the hands of someone else, someone who looked

394
00:22:01.319 --> 00:22:04.319
at her physical beauty and wanted to own it, someone

395
00:22:04.319 --> 00:22:06.880
who didn't see her heart or cared that she was

396
00:22:06.920 --> 00:22:10.440
a wife and a mother. All he saw was a conquest,

397
00:22:10.440 --> 00:22:14.839
which he took and demolished. When he was done, Byron

398
00:22:14.920 --> 00:22:19.799
left devastated and simply sick to his stomach. Funeral plans

399
00:22:19.799 --> 00:22:22.519
would be put in motion, and Byron stared out in

400
00:22:22.559 --> 00:22:25.519
a daze as the world continued to spin around him.

401
00:22:26.400 --> 00:22:29.880
He went through the motions, but he wasn't there. Some

402
00:22:29.960 --> 00:22:34.640
things you can never unhear, some things you can never unlearn,

403
00:22:35.559 --> 00:22:39.720
and some things you definitely can never unsee. But what

404
00:22:39.880 --> 00:22:43.240
exactly had happened to Pam Well? When her photo was

405
00:22:43.279 --> 00:22:45.839
posted and the word of her murder made the news,

406
00:22:46.319 --> 00:22:49.359
this became a double edged sword. Turning on the TV

407
00:22:49.440 --> 00:22:51.759
and answering the phone was an all out nightmare for

408
00:22:51.799 --> 00:22:55.319
the Kennemores and the piglia Is alike. But that coverage

409
00:22:55.359 --> 00:22:59.359
also brought about leads, some of them very telling. A

410
00:22:59.440 --> 00:23:02.559
woman try having down Airline highway the night Pam was taken.

411
00:23:03.200 --> 00:23:06.759
She said she saw her and Pam was alive. They

412
00:23:06.759 --> 00:23:09.079
had passed each other, and Pam even looked out the

413
00:23:09.119 --> 00:23:12.920
window at her. But the stair was so unnatural that

414
00:23:12.960 --> 00:23:16.559
it caught the woman's attention, almost as if Pam was

415
00:23:16.880 --> 00:23:21.039
silently begging for help. The woman was unnerved by her

416
00:23:21.119 --> 00:23:24.039
gut telling her that this was a problem, so much

417
00:23:24.079 --> 00:23:26.480
so that the woman even wrote down a portion of

418
00:23:26.519 --> 00:23:29.039
the license plate from the vehicle as it sped away

419
00:23:29.880 --> 00:23:34.480
j T three four one. But that woman thought, would

420
00:23:34.519 --> 00:23:37.839
the rest of us think? What if I'm wrong, I'm

421
00:23:37.880 --> 00:23:40.480
gonna look like a total idiot. Maybe I should just

422
00:23:40.480 --> 00:23:43.200
mind my business. I mean, who gets involved in something

423
00:23:43.200 --> 00:23:46.200
that may be nothing. Thus she wrote the license plate

424
00:23:46.359 --> 00:23:49.079
just in case. But then she set the paper down

425
00:23:49.519 --> 00:23:52.720
and she continued about her evening. That was until she

426
00:23:52.759 --> 00:23:56.359
saw the missing poster and Pam's face, that wide eyed

427
00:23:56.400 --> 00:23:59.880
stair came rushing back to her. Oh my god, that

428
00:24:00.000 --> 00:24:02.920
it's her. I have to call the police, and so

429
00:24:03.000 --> 00:24:06.599
she picked up the phone and did. But another person

430
00:24:06.720 --> 00:24:09.319
also called police after hearing of a body found at

431
00:24:09.359 --> 00:24:13.160
Whiskey Bay. It was that season truck driver. Believe it

432
00:24:13.279 --> 00:24:15.839
or not, that truck driver is related to my uncle.

433
00:24:16.079 --> 00:24:17.160
Small world, huh.

434
00:24:17.680 --> 00:24:20.839
But that said, he remembered the naked woman sitting in

435
00:24:20.880 --> 00:24:23.319
the vehicle as he passed that night, and he also

436
00:24:23.400 --> 00:24:28.039
remembered watching that truck take the Whisky Bay exit. Both

437
00:24:28.079 --> 00:24:31.000
the woman and the driver of the semi gave similar

438
00:24:31.039 --> 00:24:34.920
descriptions of the vehicle believed to be transporting Pam. Also,

439
00:24:35.359 --> 00:24:38.160
their accounts were within thirty minutes of each other, which

440
00:24:38.160 --> 00:24:41.240
made since geographically and the timeline police had put together.

441
00:24:42.039 --> 00:24:44.400
Both witnesses said that she was alive in the car

442
00:24:44.440 --> 00:24:46.799
as far as they could tell, but the truck driver

443
00:24:46.880 --> 00:24:50.319
remembered that she was slumped over a bit. Both witnesses

444
00:24:50.359 --> 00:24:53.759
described a white work truck with a white male driving.

445
00:24:54.480 --> 00:24:57.039
The female witness only saw the driver for a split

446
00:24:57.119 --> 00:24:59.720
second glance in the flash of a street lamp light,

447
00:25:00.079 --> 00:25:03.400
so she wasn't one hundred percent. The semi driver also

448
00:25:03.519 --> 00:25:06.200
didn't get a good, prolonged look at the driver, but

449
00:25:06.319 --> 00:25:09.920
he thought that maybe he was white or Hispanic, and

450
00:25:10.039 --> 00:25:13.640
looking through records, that semi driver even called in what

451
00:25:13.759 --> 00:25:17.000
he saw on the radio that night, but no one responded.

452
00:25:17.559 --> 00:25:18.599
But how could that be?

453
00:25:19.440 --> 00:25:22.119
Well, back in that day, it was normal for there

454
00:25:22.160 --> 00:25:24.880
to be an emergency channel on a CBE radio, but

455
00:25:25.119 --> 00:25:28.720
just who monitored that channel is unclear if anyone at all.

456
00:25:29.359 --> 00:25:31.599
Word on the street was the FCC did, but what

457
00:25:31.680 --> 00:25:35.839
would they do. Trucking companies also had two way radios

458
00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:38.359
where the driver could radio in something to their in

459
00:25:38.480 --> 00:25:41.599
house dispatcher, who could then turn around and call nine

460
00:25:41.680 --> 00:25:45.160
one one. But regardless, the transmission he put out that

461
00:25:45.279 --> 00:25:48.839
night went nowhere. What happened to Pam based on the

462
00:25:48.880 --> 00:25:54.079
timeline of events autopsy report an eyewitness testimony is terrifying,

463
00:25:54.559 --> 00:25:59.559
gut wrenching, but painfully real. Pam spoke to Byron at

464
00:25:59.559 --> 00:26:01.920
some point in the evening where he told her he

465
00:26:01.960 --> 00:26:04.920
would be late and they exchanged I love Ewes before

466
00:26:04.960 --> 00:26:08.319
hanging up. Now, Jacob was away at camp, so Pam

467
00:26:08.319 --> 00:26:10.960
wouldn't have to leave to pick him up early. She

468
00:26:11.079 --> 00:26:13.240
stayed late to reset the store and prepare it for

469
00:26:13.279 --> 00:26:16.039
the next day's operations, loading a lamp and what not

470
00:26:16.200 --> 00:26:19.240
into her car to bring home, possibly a new antique

471
00:26:19.319 --> 00:26:23.960
score that would look beautiful in their house. Whether Dereck

472
00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.759
Toddley was stalking her at this point isn't clear, but

473
00:26:26.880 --> 00:26:30.599
at some point he did lay eyes on Pam, possibly

474
00:26:30.640 --> 00:26:33.599
even as she drove home. She arrived at the house

475
00:26:33.640 --> 00:26:36.839
around ten, where she got out and began unloading items

476
00:26:36.839 --> 00:26:39.880
into the house. But Pam had a habit of forgetting

477
00:26:39.880 --> 00:26:42.279
her keys in the door, so with her hands full,

478
00:26:42.599 --> 00:26:44.759
they may have hung in the lock, making entry to

479
00:26:44.799 --> 00:26:48.880
the home painfully easy. Whatever method he used to enter,

480
00:26:49.400 --> 00:26:52.519
Dereck Toddlee was watching her and made sure she was

481
00:26:52.559 --> 00:26:54.519
alone before making.

482
00:26:54.400 --> 00:26:55.319
Entry to the house.

483
00:26:56.440 --> 00:26:59.440
Pam had enough time to draw a bath, get undressed,

484
00:26:59.480 --> 00:27:01.720
and slip in to the tub before she heard someone

485
00:27:01.759 --> 00:27:05.519
coming into the bedroom. When the bathroom door opened, there

486
00:27:05.759 --> 00:27:10.000
stood a man. She was so shocked she drew back

487
00:27:10.000 --> 00:27:12.240
in horror, trying to cover her exposed body in the

488
00:27:12.279 --> 00:27:14.880
wake of this stranger, but his eyes were locked on

489
00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:18.599
exactly what he had come for. Pam screamed and undoubtedly

490
00:27:18.640 --> 00:27:20.680
tried to back away in the tub, but with nowhere

491
00:27:20.759 --> 00:27:23.279
to go, the water just created awake as the man

492
00:27:23.359 --> 00:27:26.759
rushed forward and started pawing at her. Her fear and

493
00:27:26.799 --> 00:27:30.039
the water now splashing and crashing into him as they struggled,

494
00:27:30.039 --> 00:27:33.440
only added to his excitement. Pam pulled away and she

495
00:27:33.559 --> 00:27:36.839
screamed out in terror as Dereck Toddley ruffed her around

496
00:27:36.920 --> 00:27:39.359
like a rag doll. She was no match for his

497
00:27:39.480 --> 00:27:42.920
size nor his adrenaline. He man handled her out of

498
00:27:42.960 --> 00:27:45.240
the tub as she pled for mercy, but it had

499
00:27:45.279 --> 00:27:49.799
only just begun. Now naked, terrified and at the mercy

500
00:27:49.839 --> 00:27:52.079
of an unknown man in her home, he forced her

501
00:27:52.079 --> 00:27:55.319
from the bathroom and into her bedroom. Whether he attempted

502
00:27:55.319 --> 00:27:57.640
to rape her at this point, no one knows for certain,

503
00:27:57.799 --> 00:28:00.640
but something certainly got Pam distressed enough that she chose

504
00:28:00.720 --> 00:28:03.319
to fight back with her captor, and this was evidenced

505
00:28:03.359 --> 00:28:05.480
by the dresser out of place in the bedroom and

506
00:28:05.519 --> 00:28:08.039
the family photos that had crashed around on the ground,

507
00:28:08.119 --> 00:28:11.400
scattering as they hit the floor. But Derek Lee didn't

508
00:28:11.519 --> 00:28:15.960
like any resistance or pushback. Who could resist him? This

509
00:28:16.119 --> 00:28:18.759
his thoughts as he drew back a solid, closed fist

510
00:28:19.039 --> 00:28:22.519
and punched Pam's square in the face. This is believed

511
00:28:22.559 --> 00:28:24.640
to possibly be the cause of the blood droplets on

512
00:28:24.680 --> 00:28:26.839
the rug and on the floor as her nose began

513
00:28:26.880 --> 00:28:29.559
to bleed on impact, and this would have hurt so

514
00:28:29.839 --> 00:28:34.160
bad her eyes watered, temporarily blocking her ability to see.

515
00:28:34.200 --> 00:28:37.680
But Pam was a tough cookie in spirit, a tough

516
00:28:37.720 --> 00:28:42.160
woman with poise, but in physicality she was just a girl,

517
00:28:42.200 --> 00:28:46.799
as they say, a woman beauty and grace, not bulk

518
00:28:46.960 --> 00:28:50.119
or brawn. She was never meant to be fighting a man,

519
00:28:50.559 --> 00:28:54.519
especially in physical combat, and Dereck Toddley couldn't have cared

520
00:28:54.680 --> 00:28:58.200
less about that commandment to honor a woman, even if

521
00:28:58.240 --> 00:28:59.440
all she had ever.

522
00:28:59.279 --> 00:29:00.839
Done was be a good person.

523
00:29:01.400 --> 00:29:05.319
He wanted to be sexually stimulated and gratified while dominating

524
00:29:05.519 --> 00:29:09.240
and destroying his target. Unfortunately, in his last attack he

525
00:29:09.279 --> 00:29:13.160
couldn't perform, and that delay alone allowed an unsuspecting man

526
00:29:13.359 --> 00:29:16.000
to show up, causing him to have to run. But

527
00:29:16.200 --> 00:29:19.480
that wasn't going to happen this time, and to ensure it,

528
00:29:19.720 --> 00:29:23.039
he was taking this woman with him. Get in the

529
00:29:23.160 --> 00:29:26.200
truck or I'll stab you. We all know he said

530
00:29:26.200 --> 00:29:29.480
something along those lines, and as Pam held her aching face,

531
00:29:29.759 --> 00:29:33.400
she near tiptoed through her home, trying desperately to cover herself,

532
00:29:33.519 --> 00:29:36.559
but at his command, she went outside into the darkness,

533
00:29:36.839 --> 00:29:38.279
undressed and got.

534
00:29:38.079 --> 00:29:39.400
Into the truck as told.

535
00:29:40.039 --> 00:29:42.799
He started the truck, and before she could even process

536
00:29:42.839 --> 00:29:45.079
that she was being abducted, he backed out of her

537
00:29:45.160 --> 00:29:51.359
driveway and drove away. She was now with an unknown man, naked,

538
00:29:51.839 --> 00:29:54.400
but smart enough to know that this wasn't good.

539
00:29:55.359 --> 00:29:56.680
The shock of it all was too.

540
00:29:56.599 --> 00:29:59.240
Much, and Pam's strategy became to try and keep her

541
00:29:59.279 --> 00:30:03.440
attacker calm by complying. It was the best option, if ever,

542
00:30:03.480 --> 00:30:05.799
there was a thing in this moment, And as the

543
00:30:05.839 --> 00:30:09.160
truck barreled down the highway, Dereck Toddley was amped up,

544
00:30:09.400 --> 00:30:13.079
driving erratically, which caught the attention of the female witness.

545
00:30:13.440 --> 00:30:15.799
The truck passed her by, and almost as if in

546
00:30:15.839 --> 00:30:19.599
slow motion, Pam turned and stared at her, begging silently

547
00:30:19.680 --> 00:30:22.319
for help. But it would be a fleeting moment exchanged

548
00:30:22.359 --> 00:30:25.119
between women passing in the night. As she and her

549
00:30:25.119 --> 00:30:28.359
captor got on the Interstate, that semi trucker also saw her,

550
00:30:28.519 --> 00:30:31.119
and he even radioed in that a woman was naked

551
00:30:31.119 --> 00:30:33.720
and slumped in a truck, but it just went out

552
00:30:33.759 --> 00:30:34.920
to open airwaves.

553
00:30:35.839 --> 00:30:36.319
He would have.

554
00:30:36.240 --> 00:30:38.400
Gotten the same response if he would have just yelled

555
00:30:38.400 --> 00:30:43.319
out the window nothing. Derek then took the desolate exit

556
00:30:43.319 --> 00:30:45.960
at Whiskey Bay, where Pam knew that her time was

557
00:30:46.039 --> 00:30:49.319
running out. When he pulled over, he grabbed Pam and

558
00:30:49.400 --> 00:30:51.599
ripped her out of the truck, bringing that cord with

559
00:30:51.680 --> 00:30:54.799
him that he took as a trophy from Diane Alexander's attack.

560
00:30:55.440 --> 00:30:58.640
As they struggled and fought and Pam whimpered, he was

561
00:30:58.680 --> 00:31:01.039
able to wrap that cord around on Pam's throat, and

562
00:31:01.079 --> 00:31:03.799
he began to strangle her as she gasped and she

563
00:31:03.960 --> 00:31:04.720
fought for air.

564
00:31:05.200 --> 00:31:07.200
Naked and alone in the.

565
00:31:07.240 --> 00:31:12.079
Dark, under the moonlight under a bridge, At some point

566
00:31:12.079 --> 00:31:15.240
he removed his pants, where he forcefully and brutally raped

567
00:31:15.279 --> 00:31:20.119
Pam both vaginally and anally in a swamp in the dark,

568
00:31:20.480 --> 00:31:24.559
where only the sounds of cars whirring overhead, frogs croaking,

569
00:31:24.880 --> 00:31:30.319
crickets chirping, and Pam's suffering could be heard. The rape

570
00:31:30.440 --> 00:31:35.079
was so brutal that even after three days of decomposing

571
00:31:35.119 --> 00:31:38.440
in the sweltering heat of Louisiana, the damage of the

572
00:31:38.519 --> 00:31:43.519
rape was still evident at autopsy. Pam suffered immeasurably during

573
00:31:43.519 --> 00:31:47.559
this act. No doubt but he wasn't done. He was exhausted,

574
00:31:47.680 --> 00:31:49.599
but he had to make sure that she would never

575
00:31:49.839 --> 00:31:52.519
be able to speak about it, and that's when he

576
00:31:52.599 --> 00:31:56.200
drew his knife, where he then straddled Pam's badly battered body,

577
00:31:56.559 --> 00:31:59.960
shaking with fear and aching with pain. He then slam

578
00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:05.079
ice through her throat on multiple occasions, the first four

579
00:32:05.119 --> 00:32:08.359
inches long, slicing through the delicate tissues of a woman's throat,

580
00:32:08.640 --> 00:32:11.839
the second slice five inches right across her neck, and

581
00:32:11.880 --> 00:32:14.960
the final slice across her throat was five and a

582
00:32:15.000 --> 00:32:18.880
half inches long, each slice worse than the one before.

583
00:32:19.480 --> 00:32:22.920
Her skin was fillayed open, her windpipe was severed, her

584
00:32:23.000 --> 00:32:25.480
right carotid artery was severed, as well as both her

585
00:32:25.599 --> 00:32:30.759
left and right jugular veins, and Pam was alive when

586
00:32:30.799 --> 00:32:35.200
this occurred, evidenced by blood found in her lungs at autopsy.

587
00:32:36.480 --> 00:32:40.720
Now having completed the horrific abduction, rape, and now mutilation

588
00:32:40.880 --> 00:32:44.519
of beautiful Pam, he got up and put his clothes

589
00:32:44.559 --> 00:32:49.079
back one before realizing that he should hide her. At

590
00:32:49.079 --> 00:32:51.720
that point, he looked around and began collecting brush and

591
00:32:51.759 --> 00:32:56.200
debris to cover her now dead body. As he placed

592
00:32:56.240 --> 00:32:58.599
the limbs and brush on top of her. At some point,

593
00:32:58.640 --> 00:33:01.039
the light reflected for a mine moment off of something

594
00:33:01.079 --> 00:33:05.160
near Pam's foot Aleien denn and he took a closer look,

595
00:33:05.240 --> 00:33:09.000
realizing it was a ring, one that Pam was always

596
00:33:09.079 --> 00:33:12.640
wearing on her toe. Nothing of any value really, but

597
00:33:12.839 --> 00:33:17.480
definitely a great trophy to commemorate the kill, so he

598
00:33:17.519 --> 00:33:19.839
slid it off of her toe, dropped it in his

599
00:33:19.920 --> 00:33:24.200
pocket before he got back to work covering her. He

600
00:33:24.240 --> 00:33:27.480
stepped back to look, and once satisfied at his attempt

601
00:33:27.519 --> 00:33:30.319
to hide her, he got back in his truck, cranked

602
00:33:30.319 --> 00:33:33.240
it up, and drove back home to spend time with

603
00:33:33.359 --> 00:33:36.720
his wife. Pam had fought the good fight to the

604
00:33:36.759 --> 00:33:40.200
best of her abilities, but her injuries were so extensive.

605
00:33:40.640 --> 00:33:43.640
She had defensive wounds documented on both of her hands,

606
00:33:43.839 --> 00:33:46.599
her left elbow, the back of her forearms, the back

607
00:33:46.640 --> 00:33:51.200
of her arms, her knees, really everywhere and then. Pam

608
00:33:51.319 --> 00:33:54.480
lay in the sun for three days before she was found.

609
00:33:55.000 --> 00:33:58.839
But that wouldn't stop forensic science. A rape test kit

610
00:33:58.960 --> 00:34:02.640
was done on her body. Results solidified what everyone feared.

611
00:34:03.640 --> 00:34:07.240
The same man who murdered and raped Pam was a

612
00:34:07.359 --> 00:34:11.159
genetic match to the DNA recovered from both Gina Green

613
00:34:11.760 --> 00:34:18.119
and Charlotte Murrie Pace South Louisiana officially had a serial killer,

614
00:34:18.480 --> 00:34:24.480
genetically proven hunting women all across the region. Police knew

615
00:34:24.480 --> 00:34:27.079
they had to unify their efforts with this revelation, and

616
00:34:27.159 --> 00:34:29.519
it was August of two thousand and two when a

617
00:34:29.599 --> 00:34:34.400
multi agency task force was formed. Whoever this monster was,

618
00:34:34.960 --> 00:34:37.239
A combined effort was now at work to try and

619
00:34:37.360 --> 00:34:41.599
smoke the animal out behind these killings. Pam's death shocked

620
00:34:41.599 --> 00:34:44.840
a community already struggling to understand why women were.

621
00:34:44.719 --> 00:34:46.719
Being murdered at such an alarming rate.

622
00:34:47.360 --> 00:34:50.440
Strangers felt compelled to pay their respects to Pam and

623
00:34:50.480 --> 00:34:52.880
to her family as she was laid to rest after

624
00:34:52.960 --> 00:34:57.440
a standing room only funeral conducted by a team of pastors,

625
00:34:57.480 --> 00:35:02.320
including the awesome pastor Pruet. Pam's family may have felt alone,

626
00:35:02.760 --> 00:35:07.159
but you can trust the community cared. We felt attacked.

627
00:35:08.000 --> 00:35:11.800
I felt attacked. While the focus was now mainly on Gina,

628
00:35:12.039 --> 00:35:15.639
Murray and Pam since DNA proved their murders linked, Connie's

629
00:35:15.679 --> 00:35:20.840
murder remained unsolved, Randy was still missing. Michelle Chapman and

630
00:35:20.880 --> 00:35:23.800
her boyfriend were struggling to cope with their unsolved machete

631
00:35:23.880 --> 00:35:27.519
attack in the cemetery. Colette feared that her stalker may

632
00:35:27.519 --> 00:35:31.960
return to harm her or her children. Eugenet's murder remained unsolved,

633
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:37.000
and Jerrelyn's murder investigation was still open. Christine's murder was

634
00:35:37.039 --> 00:35:40.599
still remaining open, and Diane Alexander was fighting for her

635
00:35:40.719 --> 00:35:43.760
life in a hospital after her horrific rape and beating.

636
00:35:44.679 --> 00:35:48.440
Additional testing would now prove something else too. The chord

637
00:35:48.599 --> 00:35:52.559
used to strangle Pam matched the chord used to strangle

638
00:35:52.679 --> 00:35:56.280
Diane Alexander. The Sheriff's office now had leads they felt

639
00:35:56.360 --> 00:35:58.840
they needed to share with the public, and this all

640
00:35:58.920 --> 00:36:02.000
started with the belief truck to be driven by the killer.

641
00:36:02.760 --> 00:36:05.920
In a statement released, the Sheriff's department asked the public

642
00:36:05.960 --> 00:36:07.960
to be on the lookout for a nineteen ninety six

643
00:36:08.199 --> 00:36:12.199
to nineteen ninety seven Chevrolet bearing a Louisiana license plate,

644
00:36:12.880 --> 00:36:16.679
additional descriptors including aging white surface paint and a full

645
00:36:16.760 --> 00:36:19.480
sized bed. The truck was believed to be a single

646
00:36:19.519 --> 00:36:23.360
cab without a toolbox, a smooth tailgate, and a tented

647
00:36:23.440 --> 00:36:24.079
rear window.

648
00:36:24.760 --> 00:36:26.760
And if you're from this area.

649
00:36:26.320 --> 00:36:28.679
Then you know exactly what I mean when I say

650
00:36:28.840 --> 00:36:32.599
any man driving a white truck now was public enemy

651
00:36:32.679 --> 00:36:37.320
number one. Every stop sign, every red light, and even

652
00:36:37.400 --> 00:36:40.079
passing on the road. You can bet eyes were locked

653
00:36:40.119 --> 00:36:42.239
on any man in a white truck.

654
00:36:42.920 --> 00:36:44.519
We all thought, are you the killer?

655
00:36:45.360 --> 00:36:49.199
It even emanated in our stairs. Men literally wanted to

656
00:36:49.280 --> 00:36:53.159
sell their white trucks to avoid the unwanted scrutiny. A

657
00:36:53.239 --> 00:36:56.079
tip line was set up and touted access seven days

658
00:36:56.119 --> 00:37:00.599
a week from ten am to ten pm. Rouge was

659
00:37:00.599 --> 00:37:04.239
on the hunt for a killer, and that's exactly why

660
00:37:04.280 --> 00:37:07.280
he would make his next move a little further west

661
00:37:07.320 --> 00:37:09.960
in Lafayette, where he would catch a glimpse of a

662
00:37:10.000 --> 00:37:18.239
young woman by the name of Denay Cologne.
