Part 2 On Christmas Day 2006, 18-year-old Ryan Waller and his girlfriend Heather Quan became victims of a brutal home invasion in Phoenix, Arizona. Heather was murdered. Ryan was shot twice in the head and somehow survived — with bullet fragments still lodged deep in his brain. What followed was one of the most controversial police interrogations ever recorded. Despite his severe injuries, Ryan was questioned for several hours before receiving full medical treatment.

The footage of that interview, in which he appears disoriented and struggling to stay conscious, has since become one of the most talked-about moments in true-crime history. In this episode, KJ examines the interrogation video, the investigation that followed, the search for the real perpetrators, and the long-term impact the events had on Ryan’s life. It’s a powerful story of the most unforgettable cases in modern true crime.

1
00:00:06.120 --> 00:00:09.119
Welcome to Unspeakable, a true crime podcast. Or I tell

2
00:00:09.160 --> 00:00:12.480
stories of real crimes with real victims whose cases are

3
00:00:12.519 --> 00:00:15.119
so shocking that many are left wondering how is this

4
00:00:15.199 --> 00:00:24.920
even real? I use my experiences in law enforcement corrections,

5
00:00:25.239 --> 00:00:28.000
and combined with my years as a criminal justice educator,

6
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:31.719
dig deep into complex cases of evil acts, some so

7
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:34.520
evil many feel they are unspeakable.

8
00:00:50.719 --> 00:00:51.119
Warning.

9
00:00:51.479 --> 00:00:55.240
Unspeakable as intended for mature audiences. If you are easily offended,

10
00:00:55.320 --> 00:00:59.159
then I'm not your girl. Listening discretion is advised. Hey y'all,

11
00:00:59.200 --> 00:01:01.759
kJ You're back with part two of the Ryan Waller

12
00:01:01.880 --> 00:01:04.680
episode that I started last week. So if you are

13
00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:07.840
just now joining in for the first time, don't start here.

14
00:01:08.159 --> 00:01:10.879
You're gonna be confused. Jump back, listen to episode one,

15
00:01:11.159 --> 00:01:13.840
and then you can jump into episode two. And I

16
00:01:13.879 --> 00:01:16.719
gotta tell y'all, I haven't even finished telling the story,

17
00:01:16.760 --> 00:01:19.280
and I've already started getting the hater ade. So I

18
00:01:19.359 --> 00:01:21.400
filled up my cup. I took me a few gulps,

19
00:01:21.439 --> 00:01:23.319
and I know that some people didn't like what I

20
00:01:23.400 --> 00:01:26.159
had to say in the first episode. So is America.

21
00:01:26.680 --> 00:01:28.640
And I'm gonna roll on and tell you even more

22
00:01:29.040 --> 00:01:31.159
in part two. But first I want to give y'all

23
00:01:31.200 --> 00:01:34.359
some shout outs, and I'm gonna start in Frankston, Texas,

24
00:01:34.359 --> 00:01:36.280
where I have mister j R.

25
00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:36.959
Hayley.

26
00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:39.680
I have never heard of Frankston, Texas. Maybe I'm just

27
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:42.959
ignorant there, but I'm just waving to you right now

28
00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:44.959
on the camera. I'm so happy to have you here,

29
00:01:45.159 --> 00:01:46.719
and I'm gonna look you up on the map because

30
00:01:46.719 --> 00:01:47.879
i want to know exactly where you are.

31
00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:48.400
Jr.

32
00:01:48.680 --> 00:01:50.879
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing

33
00:01:50.920 --> 00:01:53.519
in me and for joining. I really appreciate it. It

34
00:01:53.560 --> 00:01:57.400
means everything. And then this was someone who I think

35
00:01:57.719 --> 00:02:01.120
was a listener and may have rejoined from Longview.

36
00:02:01.480 --> 00:02:02.959
I believe this is Oh yeah.

37
00:02:02.760 --> 00:02:06.599
Washington, Kelly Lee, Miss Kelly Kelly, Kelly Kelly, what is

38
00:02:06.640 --> 00:02:07.079
going on?

39
00:02:07.200 --> 00:02:08.800
Love your name. I think it's great.

40
00:02:10.080 --> 00:02:11.960
I hope you're doing well over in your neck of

41
00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.719
the woods. And then San Pablo, California, Wow, all the

42
00:02:16.759 --> 00:02:19.800
way over there away from me. I do plan to

43
00:02:19.800 --> 00:02:22.159
go to California. I've never been, but I do want

44
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:24.319
to go. But I might have to say hello to

45
00:02:24.439 --> 00:02:25.680
Christy Fernandez.

46
00:02:25.759 --> 00:02:26.840
What is going on? Christy?

47
00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:29.400
If you see me that way, maybe this summer you

48
00:02:29.439 --> 00:02:32.520
better say hey to me and then last, but certainly

49
00:02:32.599 --> 00:02:36.919
not least someone that I know personally. I think the

50
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:40.719
world of is a precious soul. I taught her and

51
00:02:40.800 --> 00:02:44.800
her sister. But Ashlin Buller all the way from right

52
00:02:44.840 --> 00:02:48.560
here in Denham Springs, Louisiana, Ashland, what is going on?

53
00:02:49.039 --> 00:02:52.000
I hope that you are doing well. I hope that

54
00:02:52.639 --> 00:02:55.400
your family is doing wonderful. I think about you and

55
00:02:55.400 --> 00:02:58.759
your precious grandpa. I know that he was. He just

56
00:02:58.800 --> 00:03:01.319
meant so much to you, and so I'm just I'm

57
00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:03.840
blowing kisses and I'm saying hello, and it is so

58
00:03:03.960 --> 00:03:07.199
good to have you join my crime family and I.

59
00:03:07.360 --> 00:03:08.639
Just adore you.

60
00:03:08.840 --> 00:03:10.639
All right, But I will have more shout outs in

61
00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:13.560
next episodes. If you haven't gotten yours, hang tight. But

62
00:03:13.719 --> 00:03:16.599
I want to jump right in to part two of

63
00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:20.240
this Ryan Waller series that I'm going to be doing.

64
00:03:20.319 --> 00:03:22.400
So how about this. I know it's been a week.

65
00:03:22.520 --> 00:03:23.960
It has been a whole week since you heard the

66
00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:25.879
last episode, So I'm gonna give you a quick recap

67
00:03:26.159 --> 00:03:28.479
so we can be up to date on where we were.

68
00:03:28.599 --> 00:03:31.520
So there's a lot going on. Ryan Waller and his

69
00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:34.960
girlfriend Heather did not show up for Christmas. And so

70
00:03:35.080 --> 00:03:37.919
his mom got very upset. She called nine to one

71
00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.680
one and requested that a welfare check be done on

72
00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:43.800
her son. When police eventually made entry into the house,

73
00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:46.159
they did find that Heather was deceased on the couch

74
00:03:46.240 --> 00:03:48.560
from a gunshot wound to the head. And then the

75
00:03:48.680 --> 00:03:53.159
initial responding officers in the reports that they wrote, at

76
00:03:53.280 --> 00:03:57.360
first they thought they had possibly come upon a potential

77
00:03:57.560 --> 00:04:01.199
suicide when they first saw Heather dead on the couch.

78
00:04:01.199 --> 00:04:03.479
I don't think I maybe mentioned that in episode one,

79
00:04:03.759 --> 00:04:05.719
but I did read that in their reporting that when

80
00:04:05.719 --> 00:04:08.199
they were peering through the blinds, they thought, uh, oh,

81
00:04:08.280 --> 00:04:10.039
you know, we're already here on a welfare check. This

82
00:04:10.120 --> 00:04:14.039
might be a suicide. So while they were clearing the house,

83
00:04:14.280 --> 00:04:16.639
Ryan ended up going out of the back door. They

84
00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:18.920
detained him, and they placed him in a police car

85
00:04:19.240 --> 00:04:24.240
until the homicide detective arrived and was able to take over. Remember,

86
00:04:24.360 --> 00:04:27.120
Ryan had this massive black eye. He also had a

87
00:04:27.120 --> 00:04:30.879
wound on his nose, but he continued to say that

88
00:04:30.959 --> 00:04:33.279
he didn't know what was going on. And then when

89
00:04:33.279 --> 00:04:36.879
they pulled out his roommate, Alicia, she also said she

90
00:04:37.000 --> 00:04:40.000
had no idea what was going on. So due to

91
00:04:40.120 --> 00:04:44.399
this confusing confusing nature of the situation, that there were

92
00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:47.160
no clearcut answers in this exact moment, and someone's dead

93
00:04:47.160 --> 00:04:49.319
in the house. They were taken down to the police

94
00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:52.920
station for questioning. Ryan continued to maintain that he did

95
00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.560
not know what was going on, and the interview at

96
00:04:55.560 --> 00:05:00.480
the police station just made no sense whatsoever. Said Heather

97
00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:02.839
hit him and cause the black eye. Then he said

98
00:05:02.839 --> 00:05:05.560
his roommate may have done it, and just everything was

99
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:09.040
a big mumble, jumbled mess. About twenty five minutes into

100
00:05:09.079 --> 00:05:12.480
the interview, the detective did look more closely at his

101
00:05:12.560 --> 00:05:15.600
injuries after he started to now say that he had

102
00:05:15.639 --> 00:05:19.639
been shot in the face. That was really quite unbelievable,

103
00:05:19.839 --> 00:05:21.759
considering he was walking and talking and all of that

104
00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:26.279
until it wasn't. And that's whenever the detective said, holy shit,

105
00:05:26.399 --> 00:05:28.199
I think he really might be shot in the face.

106
00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:31.680
Ryan was sent to the hospital, where doctors would confirm

107
00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:35.720
Ryan was telling the truth. He had been shot in

108
00:05:35.800 --> 00:05:40.160
the face, but he was alive. He was walking and talking,

109
00:05:40.199 --> 00:05:43.800
although not making sense. Obviously, he had been shot in

110
00:05:43.800 --> 00:05:47.399
the face, so police were left dumbfounded that not only

111
00:05:47.480 --> 00:05:52.759
was he alive, but he was speaking and this was

112
00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:56.639
against all odds, against all odds, would this actually be

113
00:05:57.120 --> 00:05:58.120
the probability of.

114
00:05:58.079 --> 00:05:59.959
What was happening here? But it was real.

115
00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:03.160
And to put this into more perspective, when Ryan was

116
00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:06.720
what I mean is like, how amazing this is that

117
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:07.920
he is alive right now?

118
00:06:08.040 --> 00:06:08.839
It's a miracle.

119
00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:12.439
When Ryan was initially arrested at the house, he gave

120
00:06:12.639 --> 00:06:15.399
very direct answers to the questions when he was being

121
00:06:15.439 --> 00:06:17.439
put in cuffs, do you have any weapons on you? No?

122
00:06:17.879 --> 00:06:20.079
Is there anyone else in the house, Yes, my roommates.

123
00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:22.240
You know, when they said come out of the house,

124
00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:24.079
you know, get on the ground whatever, he did walk

125
00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:25.720
out and I didn't get on the ground like he

126
00:06:25.800 --> 00:06:29.759
was commanded. But you know, he was doing what he

127
00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:32.240
was told for the most part, and he was answering questions.

128
00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:35.600
That is incredible. Think about that, a bullet to the

129
00:06:35.720 --> 00:06:38.920
face and your brain is still trying to function at

130
00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:41.199
its best capacity. Now.

131
00:06:41.279 --> 00:06:42.040
Ryan did not.

132
00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:46.439
Mention anytime on the scene that he had been shot.

133
00:06:46.560 --> 00:06:50.040
It was actually in the interrogation room when he seemed

134
00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:52.120
to kind of make it make sense in his brain

135
00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:54.360
and he was able to say, I was shot in

136
00:06:54.399 --> 00:06:56.639
the face, and that was what had resulted in this

137
00:06:56.759 --> 00:06:58.399
traumatic brain injury.

138
00:06:58.680 --> 00:07:01.439
So all of that said, police.

139
00:07:01.079 --> 00:07:06.240
Now had to make sense of what information Ryan had

140
00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:10.160
given them, because some was accurate, but some was very

141
00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:15.279
clearly not accurate. Deciphering all of this would be impossible

142
00:07:15.720 --> 00:07:19.360
without the help of additional interviews from more people. So

143
00:07:19.399 --> 00:07:24.839
what was eventually or initially coming across as being evasive

144
00:07:25.319 --> 00:07:30.000
was now obviously a horrendous symptom of his grave injury.

145
00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:33.279
Ryan was a victim in all of this, but just

146
00:07:33.360 --> 00:07:38.040
simply able to unable to vocalize it. I can't imagine

147
00:07:38.040 --> 00:07:40.800
the struggle that must have felt like, because you know,

148
00:07:40.839 --> 00:07:44.120
he's obviously suffering and he thinks he's saying something and

149
00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:46.399
he's trying to give the information. He just can't make

150
00:07:46.439 --> 00:07:50.639
it make sense. But knowing what we know now, it's

151
00:07:50.759 --> 00:07:53.199
just heartbreaking to think that he was trying his best,

152
00:07:53.240 --> 00:07:56.000
but he's just too injured in the moment to be

153
00:07:56.079 --> 00:07:58.839
able to do it. And that's why that frustration was

154
00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:00.920
coming out and why it was like, I don't know, man,

155
00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:04.800
I don't know. It's because he genuinely could not vocalize it.

156
00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:09.879
So with that information in mind, police were looking at

157
00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:12.519
everything that he had said and they wanted to find

158
00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:16.680
out if Richie and his father, who Ryan had eventually claimed,

159
00:08:16.800 --> 00:08:19.639
or his attackers once he was in the interrogation room

160
00:08:19.879 --> 00:08:22.920
were Number one, were they real people? And number two,

161
00:08:23.360 --> 00:08:27.759
if so, did they actually fit in the story factually

162
00:08:27.959 --> 00:08:31.800
right now or was Ryan putting them in here because

163
00:08:31.800 --> 00:08:34.720
of the brain injury and it was not actually part

164
00:08:34.720 --> 00:08:39.600
of what had just happened. Again, Ryan had stated multiple

165
00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:42.399
things that weren't correct because of his injury, So figuring

166
00:08:42.440 --> 00:08:45.200
out what was real and what wasn't is part of

167
00:08:45.240 --> 00:08:46.080
the process here.

168
00:08:46.120 --> 00:08:48.840
For example, he said he was born in Michigan. He wasn't.

169
00:08:49.080 --> 00:08:51.279
He said Heather wasn't his girlfriend at first, then he

170
00:08:51.320 --> 00:08:53.919
said that she was. He said Heather hit him and

171
00:08:53.960 --> 00:08:56.039
caused the black eye, which she hadn't. And the reason

172
00:08:56.120 --> 00:08:59.320
I'm pointing this out is because Ryan was hurt. He

173
00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:01.799
was trying to give good information. But police, you know,

174
00:09:01.840 --> 00:09:04.799
they don't know anything and what is factual and what

175
00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:07.399
isn't for certain, so they're having to look and pick

176
00:09:07.440 --> 00:09:09.639
and decide, Okay, how do we put this all together?

177
00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:12.679
And what was Ryan actually trying to convey to us?

178
00:09:13.320 --> 00:09:15.879
So police felt like this was more like a puzzle

179
00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:18.799
with pieces everywhere, and the information had to be sorted

180
00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:21.960
then organized in order to try to put together a

181
00:09:21.960 --> 00:09:26.200
sequence of events. So Detective Dalton, after he sent Ryan

182
00:09:26.240 --> 00:09:28.679
off to the hospital, he followed the ambulance to Saint

183
00:09:28.759 --> 00:09:31.840
Joseph's Hospital and he stayed there until he was briefed

184
00:09:31.879 --> 00:09:34.600
by doctors that Ryan had in fact been shot in

185
00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:38.200
the face and this was a clear injury to his brain.

186
00:09:38.519 --> 00:09:42.960
The doctors would have to work valiantly to save Ryan's life.

187
00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:46.840
The bullet had traveled through the left side of Ryan's

188
00:09:46.879 --> 00:09:50.159
face through the nose area, and a fragment of the

189
00:09:50.200 --> 00:09:54.759
bullet had broken off. Now, that fragment had lodged in

190
00:09:54.840 --> 00:09:58.840
his left temporal lobe behind his left eye, hence the

191
00:09:58.919 --> 00:10:03.080
massive black but it came to rest in front of

192
00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:06.879
his left ear, so it was still in there now.

193
00:10:06.919 --> 00:10:10.720
The left temporal lobe, if you just are curious, is

194
00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:14.639
the dominant hemisphere of your brain used for things like language,

195
00:10:15.440 --> 00:10:21.720
verbal verbalization of your memory, and processing complex sounds. So basically,

196
00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:25.279
the main portion of Ryan's brain that was damaged was

197
00:10:25.320 --> 00:10:29.559
the part that he needed to understand and then respond

198
00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:32.279
to people and to things that were happening around him.

199
00:10:32.320 --> 00:10:35.720
Stimulus in his environment. The path of the damage that

200
00:10:35.799 --> 00:10:39.480
was done by the bullet had greatly hindered his ability

201
00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:43.480
to access his memories, and it also was hindering his

202
00:10:43.679 --> 00:10:48.240
language and the ability to express things accurately. It also

203
00:10:48.399 --> 00:10:52.879
explained why his emotions seemed off in the situation, or

204
00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:55.919
his lack of emotion whenever you know, Heather was dead

205
00:10:55.960 --> 00:10:57.639
on the couch and he seemed to just like not

206
00:10:57.799 --> 00:11:00.559
really think much of it. Well, that wasn't what was happening.

207
00:11:01.480 --> 00:11:04.840
The damaged portion of his brain housed the software that

208
00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:11.279
would have regulated his emotional response in all of that. Obviously,

209
00:11:11.600 --> 00:11:15.159
with all of that damage to his body, it wanted

210
00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:18.360
to quickly repair itself, and we all know what happens

211
00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:22.879
when you first get injured. Swelling. His brain was swelling

212
00:11:23.159 --> 00:11:26.360
as a result of the initial damage from the bullet,

213
00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:29.759
and that swelling is what would necessitate surgery amongst other

214
00:11:29.799 --> 00:11:33.879
repairs if Ryan were even to have a chance at survival.

215
00:11:34.720 --> 00:11:38.000
So he was sent in for surgery and afterwards he

216
00:11:38.159 --> 00:11:41.759
was placed in recovery. It's incredible that he survived the surgery,

217
00:11:41.759 --> 00:11:44.679
in my opinion. But now everyone would just have to

218
00:11:44.679 --> 00:11:47.480
wait it out. They would have to just sit and

219
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:50.360
it'd be a waiting game. Of would he live or

220
00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:54.919
would he die? And nobody knew that answer. So learning this,

221
00:11:55.720 --> 00:11:59.039
Detective Dalton left the hospital and he returned back to

222
00:11:59.120 --> 00:12:03.000
the crime scene where he and other investigators immediately wanted

223
00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:06.960
to canvass the area for any possible witnesses that may

224
00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:09.240
have information on what could have occurred.

225
00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:11.519
So they spoke to the next door neighbors.

226
00:12:11.559 --> 00:12:14.840
Their names were Robert and Elizabeth, and Robert and Elizabeth

227
00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:18.399
said that the previous night was quiet. They had never

228
00:12:18.440 --> 00:12:23.639
heard anything like nothing, And what they did confirm for

229
00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:26.879
the police was that the lights at Ryan's house had

230
00:12:26.919 --> 00:12:31.200
been off for three days. Now, you're wondering to yourself,

231
00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:33.759
why would you notice that? Why would you know if

232
00:12:33.759 --> 00:12:36.759
someone's house lights were off for three days? Why would

233
00:12:36.799 --> 00:12:39.320
that even catch your attention? Well, there was a reason,

234
00:12:39.879 --> 00:12:43.759
and that's because this was a change of pace compared

235
00:12:43.759 --> 00:12:46.279
to what they were used to with Ryan's house. Because,

236
00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:50.240
if being honest, these neighbors had been very frustrated with

237
00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:54.080
Ryan's house due to the constant activity at the house that.

238
00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:54.679
Was going on.

239
00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:57.879
They said it was so much that they had even

240
00:12:57.919 --> 00:13:01.480
called the police prior because they felt like drugs were

241
00:13:01.480 --> 00:13:05.080
being sold out of that home. But the last three

242
00:13:05.159 --> 00:13:12.519
days nothing. It was strangely quiet compared to normal. Okay,

243
00:13:12.559 --> 00:13:14.799
So they took that into account, and then the police

244
00:13:14.840 --> 00:13:16.840
moved on to other neighbors to see, okay, did they

245
00:13:16.879 --> 00:13:21.559
know anything. But four additional neighbors around the house echoed

246
00:13:22.039 --> 00:13:25.679
the exact same sentiment. They said, it's usually extremely busy

247
00:13:25.759 --> 00:13:28.840
over there, cars in and out constantly, but the last

248
00:13:28.840 --> 00:13:32.440
three days it was radio silent. It caught their attention,

249
00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:36.200
and this included one neighbor who spent a lot of

250
00:13:36.240 --> 00:13:40.440
time in his garage smoking. He didn't smoke in his house,

251
00:13:40.919 --> 00:13:42.559
And they said, okay, well have you heard anything? Did

252
00:13:42.600 --> 00:13:45.639
you hear gunshots? Did anything ever happen, screaming anything? And

253
00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:48.279
he said nothing. He said, I never heard a gunshot,

254
00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:52.320
I never heard anything. And he confirmed that was over

255
00:13:52.360 --> 00:13:57.840
the last three days quiet. So this lack of activity

256
00:13:57.879 --> 00:14:02.039
at the home also was supporting roommate Alicia's account of

257
00:14:02.039 --> 00:14:05.120
things and that she said she hadn't been home over

258
00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:08.039
the last days because she had stayed at her mother's house.

259
00:14:09.240 --> 00:14:11.759
So they're putting all of this together and going hmm,

260
00:14:12.320 --> 00:14:15.600
because if all of this took place on Christmas Day,

261
00:14:16.480 --> 00:14:20.279
that would mean everybody's wrong. How could they have not

262
00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:23.840
seen anything, heard anything, if everybody was there, but they're

263
00:14:23.840 --> 00:14:28.080
all saying they heard nothing. It's kind of interesting. But

264
00:14:28.159 --> 00:14:32.200
one thing was for certain, and that's that Heather was dead.

265
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:36.519
We cannot forget about Heather and all of this. Her

266
00:14:36.600 --> 00:14:42.000
life was over and detectives knew exactly what had happened

267
00:14:42.000 --> 00:14:45.840
to her. She was brutally murdered, but they were going

268
00:14:45.879 --> 00:14:48.399
to have to find out more about what happened. So

269
00:14:48.519 --> 00:14:50.480
a few days after the incident, this would have been

270
00:14:50.480 --> 00:14:55.759
on January second, Detective Dalton attended Heather's autopsy. He took

271
00:14:55.840 --> 00:14:59.600
notes and he watched as her clothing was assessed and

272
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:01.519
doc amended, as well as.

273
00:15:01.440 --> 00:15:02.639
All of her wounds.

274
00:15:03.279 --> 00:15:06.440
And you read this report and it's like you can

275
00:15:06.519 --> 00:15:10.000
just visualize this poor girl, you know, laying on the couch.

276
00:15:10.039 --> 00:15:12.399
She had been snuggled up in a black hoodie. She

277
00:15:12.519 --> 00:15:16.679
was still wearing her jeans when she was executed, just

278
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:21.840
laying on her side on the couch, bothering no one.

279
00:15:22.279 --> 00:15:25.240
So the medical examiner would conclude that she did in

280
00:15:25.399 --> 00:15:27.960
fact die of a gunshot wound to the head, and

281
00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:31.240
the caliber of that weapon was believed to be a

282
00:15:31.360 --> 00:15:34.639
twenty two. Now if you don't aren't familiar with with

283
00:15:34.639 --> 00:15:36.919
with bullets, Okay, this is going to be a very small,

284
00:15:37.320 --> 00:15:38.919
yet effective bullet.

285
00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:39.720
Okay.

286
00:15:41.080 --> 00:15:44.080
So there would be additional findings though that would be

287
00:15:44.320 --> 00:15:47.159
very important to this case in the long run.

288
00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:49.080
Based on the.

289
00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:54.279
Further exploration of Heather's body during the autopsy, the medical

290
00:15:54.320 --> 00:15:59.600
examiner would say that this murder or death did not

291
00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:06.559
seem fresh. It was not brand new, as was thought

292
00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:11.320
at the scene. Initially, the firefighters had even said, she's

293
00:16:11.320 --> 00:16:13.960
been dead, she's cold, this is not like she just

294
00:16:14.120 --> 00:16:14.559
was shot.

295
00:16:15.120 --> 00:16:17.759
But the coroner confirmed this. Okay.

296
00:16:18.480 --> 00:16:22.320
Decomposition begins as soon as the body dies, as soon

297
00:16:22.320 --> 00:16:25.559
as you take your last breath, decomp starts, and that

298
00:16:25.679 --> 00:16:28.879
process may not be readily visible to the naked eye, okay,

299
00:16:28.879 --> 00:16:32.480
when you're looking at somebody, but the autopsy can provide

300
00:16:32.519 --> 00:16:35.919
that evidence. Most people, whenever they think about someone being

301
00:16:35.960 --> 00:16:39.240
dead for a couple of days, okay, puture faction is

302
00:16:39.279 --> 00:16:41.519
the phase that comes to mind. Most people think about

303
00:16:41.519 --> 00:16:44.000
someone being dead and they're gross and they're you know,

304
00:16:44.360 --> 00:16:46.799
turning green, and there's bugs and all that kind of shit.

305
00:16:47.320 --> 00:16:50.360
But that kind of stuff doesn't usually happen until almost

306
00:16:50.440 --> 00:16:54.320
day four. Again, whether in temperature respective, everything's relative in

307
00:16:55.240 --> 00:16:58.200
relation to a body's dcomp Okay, but you don't become

308
00:16:58.279 --> 00:16:59.840
putrid immediately.

309
00:17:00.159 --> 00:17:00.960
It takes time.

310
00:17:02.159 --> 00:17:04.880
If Heather was indoors and in an air conditioned room

311
00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:08.799
like she was, then her exterior would have looked rather

312
00:17:08.920 --> 00:17:13.079
normal for the first few days to just the average

313
00:17:13.160 --> 00:17:17.160
joe looking at her. But internally, the bacteria that was

314
00:17:17.160 --> 00:17:20.359
feeding on the contents of her intestines before she died,

315
00:17:21.160 --> 00:17:25.240
that would bacteria would have begun to digest the intestines

316
00:17:25.279 --> 00:17:30.279
themselves after death, okay, and this is immediately. That activity

317
00:17:30.279 --> 00:17:33.000
then would break outside of her intestines and it would

318
00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:37.000
start digesting all of the surrounding organs, which is the

319
00:17:37.039 --> 00:17:40.440
eventual process when you get you know, complete decomposition. So

320
00:17:40.480 --> 00:17:43.440
when the doctors opened her up, the coroner could tell

321
00:17:43.480 --> 00:17:46.079
that she had been dead for a few days, not

322
00:17:46.279 --> 00:17:49.440
one day. A few days because the process that I

323
00:17:49.599 --> 00:17:53.279
just mentioned had already taken place. The decomp was more

324
00:17:53.279 --> 00:17:57.640
advanced than just one day. So that meant that although

325
00:17:57.720 --> 00:18:00.799
the couple had missed Christmas with their family and they

326
00:18:00.839 --> 00:18:03.240
were found late that night, you know, into the early

327
00:18:03.279 --> 00:18:07.920
morning hours of the twenty sixth, they had actually been

328
00:18:08.079 --> 00:18:13.319
injured and dead for more like three days. And all

329
00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:18.519
of this is based on Heather's level of decomposition, combined

330
00:18:18.880 --> 00:18:21.799
with it aligning with the information from the neighbors that

331
00:18:21.839 --> 00:18:25.319
there had been no activity at that house, no lights,

332
00:18:25.400 --> 00:18:29.319
no movement for around three days. It was just making sense.

333
00:18:30.519 --> 00:18:36.119
So Ryan had apparently been alive but gravely injured, unaware

334
00:18:36.119 --> 00:18:39.799
of how bad it was, yet continuously moving about the

335
00:18:39.880 --> 00:18:43.839
home during this time. No wonder, he wasn't answering the

336
00:18:43.880 --> 00:18:46.319
phone when his mom or his dad or anybody was

337
00:18:46.359 --> 00:18:49.319
calling him. No wonder, he didn't answer the door when

338
00:18:49.319 --> 00:18:51.599
Pete family came knocking and was trying to get him

339
00:18:51.640 --> 00:18:54.240
to come to the door. His brain had been swelling

340
00:18:54.319 --> 00:18:56.119
for what was now believed to have been two to

341
00:18:56.200 --> 00:19:01.640
three days. Ryan had woken up on the floor. He

342
00:19:02.599 --> 00:19:07.400
never saw Heather get shot. This had to be true because,

343
00:19:07.440 --> 00:19:10.640
based on the evidence initially observed at the scene, he

344
00:19:10.680 --> 00:19:14.640
would have been shot and fell unconscious to the ground

345
00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:18.440
right there by those sliding glass doors. And I tell

346
00:19:18.480 --> 00:19:21.880
you this because officers had documented that they saw a

347
00:19:21.920 --> 00:19:26.480
pool of blood inside the sliding glass doors, and Heather's body,

348
00:19:26.559 --> 00:19:30.640
after everything had been processed, never seemed to have moved

349
00:19:30.720 --> 00:19:34.920
off of the couch at any point that said. That's

350
00:19:34.920 --> 00:19:37.119
why they think now the pool of blood must have

351
00:19:37.160 --> 00:19:39.559
been Ryan's initial location of where he had been shot

352
00:19:39.799 --> 00:19:44.039
inside the house. When he awoke whatever time later, he

353
00:19:44.200 --> 00:19:47.240
was functioning, but it was just on like a superficial

354
00:19:47.279 --> 00:19:49.240
type of level. And if you've been a listener for

355
00:19:49.279 --> 00:19:51.839
a long time, you may remember my episode on the

356
00:19:51.839 --> 00:19:55.240
Piglia Family. This was the same case there. If not,

357
00:19:55.519 --> 00:19:57.440
you can go back and you can listen to that one.

358
00:19:57.680 --> 00:19:59.880
But the dad was chopped up with an axe and

359
00:20:00.079 --> 00:20:03.359
his face. He had suffered severe brain damage, and although

360
00:20:03.359 --> 00:20:07.000
he was mortally wounded, when he gained consciousness again, he

361
00:20:07.160 --> 00:20:10.119
got up, He walked around the house, bleeding everywhere. He

362
00:20:10.160 --> 00:20:13.039
even went outside and got his newspaper. He got locked

363
00:20:13.039 --> 00:20:15.400
out of his house, He even got his spare key

364
00:20:15.519 --> 00:20:19.480
unlocked the door, walked back inside before eventually collapsing and

365
00:20:19.559 --> 00:20:22.079
dying on the floor. So it's not unheard of. And

366
00:20:22.119 --> 00:20:25.720
it seemed now that Ryan woke up. But when he

367
00:20:25.799 --> 00:20:29.519
got up he saw the blood on the floor, he

368
00:20:29.640 --> 00:20:32.480
subconsciously realized.

369
00:20:32.079 --> 00:20:33.160
That this was a mess.

370
00:20:33.799 --> 00:20:35.599
That you're not supposed to have a mess on the floor.

371
00:20:35.599 --> 00:20:37.160
But he's not putting two and two together because he's

372
00:20:37.200 --> 00:20:41.039
so traumatically injured and so seeing the mess, he went

373
00:20:41.079 --> 00:20:44.039
and got a mop and he started mopping up the blood.

374
00:20:44.079 --> 00:20:45.920
Now it wasn't a great job, but he had started

375
00:20:45.920 --> 00:20:49.079
trying to mop up the blood. Hence why in the

376
00:20:49.119 --> 00:20:54.440
evidence report there was a massive luminol reaction for an

377
00:20:54.480 --> 00:20:59.640
attempted cleanup at the scene. So this hadn't been a

378
00:20:59.680 --> 00:21:02.599
crime seen cover up attempt at like it first looked.

379
00:21:02.920 --> 00:21:05.960
This was Ryan's brain trying to work on autopilot with

380
00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:11.720
faulty equipment. It's just flat out pitiful if you're really

381
00:21:11.799 --> 00:21:13.960
listening to what this poor guy was going through.

382
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:16.720
For three days, two to three days, he.

383
00:21:16.680 --> 00:21:20.000
Went in the living room where Heather was laying dead,

384
00:21:20.720 --> 00:21:24.839
but he interpreted that as she was sleeping. There was

385
00:21:24.920 --> 00:21:27.799
blood smeared on the couch, there was blood all over

386
00:21:27.799 --> 00:21:30.519
the pillows, there was blood on the floor, there was

387
00:21:30.559 --> 00:21:35.440
blood on her head in her face. But Ryan didn't

388
00:21:35.480 --> 00:21:37.640
pick up on all of that because of the injury.

389
00:21:37.920 --> 00:21:42.519
And strangely enough, when looking at the reports, there was

390
00:21:42.559 --> 00:21:46.839
a glock a pistol. There was a glock stuck in

391
00:21:46.920 --> 00:21:51.640
the couch in between the cushions, right with Heather's body,

392
00:21:52.240 --> 00:21:56.319
but only the grip was visible when Heather's body was

393
00:21:56.359 --> 00:22:01.400
recovered from the couch. That was odd that grip of

394
00:22:01.480 --> 00:22:06.839
that gun was also covered in blood. Well, obviously Heather

395
00:22:06.960 --> 00:22:07.559
didn't do it.

396
00:22:08.400 --> 00:22:09.079
She was dead.

397
00:22:10.519 --> 00:22:13.960
So had Ryan gotten that gun and maybe brought it

398
00:22:14.119 --> 00:22:17.759
back in there and placed it with her after the attack,

399
00:22:17.920 --> 00:22:21.440
so maybe in his mind she would have protection. It's

400
00:22:21.559 --> 00:22:25.640
possible anything at at this juncture was possible because the

401
00:22:25.640 --> 00:22:30.400
whole thing was odd, But poor Ryan didn't know what

402
00:22:30.440 --> 00:22:34.839
he was doing. So the belief here also was that

403
00:22:35.079 --> 00:22:40.200
Ryan must have covered Heather up. It made sense as

404
00:22:40.240 --> 00:22:42.480
to why Heather had a red blanket pulled all the

405
00:22:42.519 --> 00:22:45.000
way up to her neck, and this was after she

406
00:22:45.079 --> 00:22:47.319
had been shot because of the way the blood spatter was,

407
00:22:47.799 --> 00:22:50.920
so Ryan must have covered her up, not processing that

408
00:22:50.960 --> 00:22:51.680
she was even.

409
00:22:51.559 --> 00:22:55.119
Dead, so she wouldn't be cold while she slept.

410
00:22:56.039 --> 00:23:02.920
That subconscious caring was in there, pitiful. And then he

411
00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:05.799
must have gone back to his room because the initial

412
00:23:05.799 --> 00:23:09.000
police report said that there was blood on his bedroom floor.

413
00:23:09.519 --> 00:23:13.839
There was blood all over his bed, his pillows, and

414
00:23:13.960 --> 00:23:17.000
also his bathroom, so there was evidence that he had

415
00:23:17.039 --> 00:23:20.240
spent time in all of those rooms, even going into

416
00:23:20.279 --> 00:23:24.519
the restroom the entire time, slowly dying with his brain

417
00:23:24.640 --> 00:23:26.920
swelling before he eventually went and laid down.

418
00:23:26.960 --> 00:23:27.480
In the bed.

419
00:23:28.200 --> 00:23:30.720
The pooled blood that was in the house, it was

420
00:23:30.920 --> 00:23:32.599
dry in a lot of places too.

421
00:23:32.640 --> 00:23:34.920
Think about that pooled blood was dry.

422
00:23:35.240 --> 00:23:39.240
This was just additional evidence that time had passed since

423
00:23:39.279 --> 00:23:43.079
they had been attacked. It was all lining up. The

424
00:23:43.200 --> 00:23:48.200
couple was fine when roommate Alicia left for her mother's

425
00:23:48.200 --> 00:23:51.160
house for a few days. She even said that in

426
00:23:51.200 --> 00:23:55.480
her interview, but Ryan already had the black eye when

427
00:23:55.559 --> 00:24:00.000
she returned on Christmas night between nine thirty and ten Peace.

428
00:24:01.200 --> 00:24:03.279
So this meant that the couple had to have been

429
00:24:03.319 --> 00:24:07.359
shot somewhere more around December the twenty third, based on

430
00:24:07.440 --> 00:24:10.079
Heather's level of decomp and the fact that Ryan was

431
00:24:10.160 --> 00:24:13.480
already shot with advanced dark black and blue bruising on

432
00:24:13.519 --> 00:24:16.599
his face when he was found on the twenty fifth

433
00:24:16.640 --> 00:24:19.440
early mornings of the twenty sixth, So this was now

434
00:24:19.480 --> 00:24:22.200
the timeline that police were working with. But what the

435
00:24:22.240 --> 00:24:26.640
hell had happened? Well, Detective Dalton would be very interested

436
00:24:27.160 --> 00:24:31.200
in a former roommate named Eric, and this guy's name

437
00:24:31.319 --> 00:24:35.079
was brought up multiple times between Ryan and the current

438
00:24:35.119 --> 00:24:39.920
roommate Alicia. During their initial questioning this name, Eric kept

439
00:24:39.960 --> 00:24:44.920
swirling around. Ryan initially said that Eric was dating Heather,

440
00:24:45.319 --> 00:24:48.519
but y'all, we know that's not true because Ryan was

441
00:24:48.640 --> 00:24:55.279
dating Heather. In Alicia's initial interview, she said she used

442
00:24:55.279 --> 00:24:59.799
to date roommate Eric, so obviously this needed some c

443
00:25:00.000 --> 00:25:02.039
clarification in the fact that the guy used to live

444
00:25:02.079 --> 00:25:06.440
there seems pretty important. So Detective Dalton called this Eric

445
00:25:06.480 --> 00:25:09.440
Fella to get his explanation of the friendships or the

446
00:25:09.480 --> 00:25:14.440
relationships between everyone. But from the very start, Eric said,

447
00:25:14.599 --> 00:25:19.200
I never dated Alisha. Why would Alisha lie about that?

448
00:25:20.039 --> 00:25:24.319
Why would you say you dated somebody if you didn't. Well,

449
00:25:24.359 --> 00:25:28.720
here's the kicker. Alicia wasn't lying, but neither was Eric.

450
00:25:29.599 --> 00:25:33.480
In a twist of events, it was realized there had

451
00:25:33.519 --> 00:25:38.079
actually been two Erics that lived in that house prior

452
00:25:38.200 --> 00:25:43.359
to this incident. Eric number one, the guy that Detective

453
00:25:43.440 --> 00:25:47.240
Dalton was speaking to. He had the nickname Southside and

454
00:25:47.319 --> 00:25:50.359
he used to be Ryan's roommate before they had a

455
00:25:50.400 --> 00:25:54.599
falling out and Eric left the house. That's when Alisha

456
00:25:54.680 --> 00:25:58.920
moved in as well as Eric number two. Eric number

457
00:25:58.960 --> 00:26:02.640
two had hell tattooed on his arm. So I'm going

458
00:26:02.720 --> 00:26:05.000
to refer to Eric number one as Southside and Eric

459
00:26:05.079 --> 00:26:07.240
number two that dated Alicia as hell Raiser, so we

460
00:26:07.279 --> 00:26:08.079
can keep it clear.

461
00:26:09.079 --> 00:26:13.759
Alicia never dated Southside. Alicia dated hell Raiser.

462
00:26:14.039 --> 00:26:16.200
So that's why there seemed to be people not telling

463
00:26:16.240 --> 00:26:17.079
the truth, but they were.

464
00:26:17.119 --> 00:26:19.920
It just had to be clarified, all right, gotcha.

465
00:26:20.759 --> 00:26:25.960
So when asked why and when Southside Eric had left

466
00:26:25.960 --> 00:26:29.240
the house and gone to the left the Phoenix area,

467
00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:32.200
it turned out that he said it had been just

468
00:26:32.240 --> 00:26:36.519
about two weeks prior to the shooting. That's pretty convenient

469
00:26:36.559 --> 00:26:40.720
that you say you left right before a shooting occurred.

470
00:26:41.240 --> 00:26:42.480
So do tell give.

471
00:26:42.400 --> 00:26:46.759
Us more information, Eric, because the timeline seems kind of,

472
00:26:46.920 --> 00:26:47.240
you know.

473
00:26:47.200 --> 00:26:47.960
A red flag.

474
00:26:48.680 --> 00:26:51.559
So south Side Eric explained, Look, I left town on

475
00:26:51.599 --> 00:26:55.119
December the twelfth because Ryan and I got in an argument.

476
00:26:55.559 --> 00:26:58.559
Ryan was wanting to throw a party, and south Side

477
00:26:58.680 --> 00:27:00.559
Eric didn't want to because he said it's going to

478
00:27:00.640 --> 00:27:03.440
piss off the landlord. But I got to tell you

479
00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:07.200
something real quick. It's not quite as kosher as oh,

480
00:27:07.279 --> 00:27:08.680
let's have a party. No, I don't want to have

481
00:27:08.680 --> 00:27:09.920
a party our landlord.

482
00:27:09.599 --> 00:27:10.000
To get mad.

483
00:27:10.039 --> 00:27:14.400
Okay, it's not quite that that uppity, Okay. The situation,

484
00:27:14.559 --> 00:27:18.599
when it was further pressed, was explained. Southside Eric said, look,

485
00:27:19.079 --> 00:27:21.519
I'll be up front. We were selling drugs out of

486
00:27:21.519 --> 00:27:24.359
the house, all right. Well, guess what that seems to

487
00:27:24.400 --> 00:27:26.440
align with all of what the neighbors thought was going

488
00:27:26.480 --> 00:27:31.440
on too. And he says, we were selling drugs and

489
00:27:31.680 --> 00:27:33.759
we were selling it, you know, out of the house.

490
00:27:34.359 --> 00:27:39.319
He said, we were selling weed, shrooms, x k oxy, cotton, vicodin,

491
00:27:39.720 --> 00:27:40.319
you name it.

492
00:27:40.599 --> 00:27:42.160
We were slanging dope out of the house.

493
00:27:43.160 --> 00:27:46.599
But Southside Eric wouldn't give up any names or connections

494
00:27:46.680 --> 00:27:49.160
or anything that could be additional potential leads because we

495
00:27:49.200 --> 00:27:52.000
all know, you know, drug sales has an inherit of

496
00:27:52.640 --> 00:27:55.599
you know, level of danger with it. But he wasn't

497
00:27:55.599 --> 00:27:57.759
going to give up any names. The only thing that

498
00:27:57.799 --> 00:28:00.839
he did say was, look, our supply or has Phoenix

499
00:28:00.920 --> 00:28:05.359
police connections. He said that allegedly, and I'm going to

500
00:28:05.400 --> 00:28:09.680
say allegedly here, that there were some officers in the

501
00:28:09.759 --> 00:28:12.559
department that were assisting the dealers to.

502
00:28:12.519 --> 00:28:13.400
Get out of jail.

503
00:28:14.160 --> 00:28:16.720
And he also claimed, look, I saw this firsthand because

504
00:28:16.799 --> 00:28:20.000
Ryan had previously been arrested and he was helped out

505
00:28:20.440 --> 00:28:21.119
by the cops.

506
00:28:21.400 --> 00:28:23.880
But again he gave up no names.

507
00:28:24.200 --> 00:28:26.680
He gave up nothing that this could even be vetted

508
00:28:26.839 --> 00:28:31.319
or confirmed either way. Southside Eric said, I moved out

509
00:28:31.359 --> 00:28:33.839
of the house when Ryan didn't want to stop selling

510
00:28:33.880 --> 00:28:37.599
dope and throwing these parties. Southside was wanting to remain

511
00:28:37.640 --> 00:28:39.720
more low key and not have all the attention drawn

512
00:28:39.759 --> 00:28:41.599
to the house, as well as the fact he was

513
00:28:41.640 --> 00:28:44.200
aggravated because every time they would throw a frickin' party,

514
00:28:44.440 --> 00:28:46.640
shit would come up missing, and he was tired of

515
00:28:46.680 --> 00:28:50.200
the stuff getting taken, and that was why he moved out,

516
00:28:50.279 --> 00:28:52.079
and he just gave the whole house to Ryan on

517
00:28:52.119 --> 00:28:54.160
December the twelfth because he didn't want to be a

518
00:28:54.200 --> 00:28:59.319
part of that anymore. But before that falling out, there

519
00:28:59.359 --> 00:29:04.240
had been another roommate that lived with them named Richie.

520
00:29:04.480 --> 00:29:08.240
That's the same name that Ryan mentioned as saying was

521
00:29:08.279 --> 00:29:11.880
the person that shot him in his interview. So although

522
00:29:11.880 --> 00:29:15.519
the information is coming out slowly, it's kind of starting

523
00:29:15.839 --> 00:29:20.200
to fall into place. So Richie had lived in this

524
00:29:20.319 --> 00:29:26.400
house before Ryan even moved in. Southside and Richie lived together,

525
00:29:26.920 --> 00:29:30.160
but Richie started using more and more dope and he

526
00:29:30.240 --> 00:29:32.559
started tweaking out real bad on drugs, and so he

527
00:29:32.599 --> 00:29:36.680
stopped being able to pay full rent. That's why Ryan

528
00:29:36.839 --> 00:29:39.920
moved in with Southside and Richie because he was going

529
00:29:39.960 --> 00:29:43.200
to help to pay the bills. Since Richie couldn't cover

530
00:29:43.319 --> 00:29:45.160
all of his portion of the rent because of his

531
00:29:45.559 --> 00:29:49.200
dope habit. Ryan moved in. He took the bigger bedroom

532
00:29:49.240 --> 00:29:51.480
which used to be Richie's, and he said, if I

533
00:29:51.480 --> 00:29:54.400
get the big bedroom, I'll pay more. Richie said okay,

534
00:29:54.640 --> 00:29:58.880
and Richie moved into a smaller bedroom for less money. Well,

535
00:29:58.880 --> 00:30:01.480
when that happened, I guess you could say three's a crowd,

536
00:30:01.559 --> 00:30:05.319
but Southside, Eric and Ryan got really really tight and

537
00:30:05.359 --> 00:30:09.680
they started hustling and doing drug sales together. Shortly thereafter,

538
00:30:10.559 --> 00:30:14.680
Southside told Richie, you gotta fucking kick bricks. Bro, you're

539
00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:18.359
not paying your rent and you're all jacked up on drugs,

540
00:30:18.759 --> 00:30:22.200
and like, this ain't cool anymore because Richie had escalated

541
00:30:22.200 --> 00:30:25.680
to starting to use meth and other what they considered

542
00:30:25.720 --> 00:30:28.240
like harder drugs than weed and pills and all of that,

543
00:30:28.640 --> 00:30:30.839
and so Southside didn't want to mess with him anymore

544
00:30:30.880 --> 00:30:34.400
because of his erratic behavior and the fact he wasn't paying.

545
00:30:34.920 --> 00:30:38.079
Ryan didn't even like Richie to be upfront, so it

546
00:30:38.119 --> 00:30:40.519
was a good change all around, it seemed for everybody.

547
00:30:41.160 --> 00:30:44.720
So Richie gets kicked out and he did leave. But

548
00:30:45.839 --> 00:30:49.559
Southside said that after Richie got kicked out, he had

549
00:30:49.640 --> 00:30:53.880
caught him creeping around the house late at night, and

550
00:30:53.920 --> 00:30:56.880
he said in one time, in one instance, he had

551
00:30:56.920 --> 00:30:59.680
heard something and he said, I even pulled a shotgun

552
00:30:59.680 --> 00:31:02.359
on rich because I thought he was a burglar. He

553
00:31:02.359 --> 00:31:04.559
almost shot his ass. He didn't, but he almost did.

554
00:31:05.400 --> 00:31:07.079
So the detective was like, okay, wait a minute, you

555
00:31:08.279 --> 00:31:10.079
thought he was a burglar and you pulled a shotgun.

556
00:31:10.319 --> 00:31:12.799
But if he wasn't there to burglarize the place, why

557
00:31:12.920 --> 00:31:17.039
was he there. And he said, well, he didn't burglarize us,

558
00:31:17.039 --> 00:31:18.799
but I feel like he was there because he wanted

559
00:31:18.839 --> 00:31:21.640
to come rob me and Ryan because he knew that

560
00:31:21.640 --> 00:31:23.519
we had a lot of stuff in the house. Well,

561
00:31:23.559 --> 00:31:25.799
what was meant by a lot of stuff was drugs

562
00:31:25.799 --> 00:31:29.640
and guns. So I was looking through an evidence file.

563
00:31:29.759 --> 00:31:34.240
In that evidence file, he listed that this is what

564
00:31:34.279 --> 00:31:36.559
should have been in the house, a glock forty five.

565
00:31:37.119 --> 00:31:39.519
He said, there was two Mosburg shotguns, one with a

566
00:31:39.519 --> 00:31:43.519
pistol grip and ar fifteen an SKS with a black

567
00:31:43.559 --> 00:31:47.440
folding stock. A Compact nine block and a twenty five

568
00:31:47.519 --> 00:31:51.720
caliber pistol with a pink pearl grip on it. He said,

569
00:31:51.720 --> 00:31:55.559
there was usually weed in the house there, you know, pills, whatever,

570
00:31:55.960 --> 00:31:58.319
and he said Richie would have known that because we

571
00:31:58.400 --> 00:32:01.400
had even sold dope to Richie and Dad in the past.

572
00:32:02.079 --> 00:32:04.240
So that's why I think he was there to come,

573
00:32:04.680 --> 00:32:08.160
you know, steal all our stuff or try to well.

574
00:32:08.200 --> 00:32:11.680
Even though Southside had now moved out of the house,

575
00:32:11.799 --> 00:32:14.440
since all of that, he was still friends with Ryan.

576
00:32:14.519 --> 00:32:16.400
They still talked. He just didn't want to live with

577
00:32:16.440 --> 00:32:19.400
him anymore. And he said, matter of fact, the very

578
00:32:19.480 --> 00:32:22.559
next day after I moved out, after Southside moved out,

579
00:32:22.799 --> 00:32:26.200
he said, Ryan and I spoke on the phone and Ryan.

580
00:32:25.920 --> 00:32:29.880
Said, Bro, after you left, I had another run in

581
00:32:30.000 --> 00:32:32.599
with Richie. I mean it was right after you left,

582
00:32:33.039 --> 00:32:34.519
and it was wild too.

583
00:32:35.559 --> 00:32:39.799
See Ryan caught Richie trying to break into the house again,

584
00:32:40.640 --> 00:32:43.720
but this time Richie was trying to break directly into

585
00:32:43.799 --> 00:32:47.440
Ryan's bedroom, because there was a door right there that

586
00:32:47.680 --> 00:32:51.039
went to Ryan's bedroom and I think, if I'm remembering

587
00:32:51.079 --> 00:32:53.599
the map correctly of the home or the schematics, that's

588
00:32:53.640 --> 00:32:56.119
the same door Ryan went out on the back patio

589
00:32:56.200 --> 00:33:00.039
when he was arrested. When Ryan caught him trying to

590
00:33:00.079 --> 00:33:02.599
break in, Ryan had a pistol on him, and so

591
00:33:02.680 --> 00:33:05.359
he jumped on Richie and he pistol whipped the shit

592
00:33:05.440 --> 00:33:10.240
out of Richie. That's what Ryan had told Southside. But

593
00:33:10.319 --> 00:33:13.119
what was even wilder about that was he pistol whipped

594
00:33:13.599 --> 00:33:16.759
Richie and then he didn't realize that the way Richie

595
00:33:16.759 --> 00:33:19.960
had gotten into the house was in a car believed

596
00:33:19.960 --> 00:33:24.400
to be driven by two Hell's Angels. You don't have

597
00:33:24.440 --> 00:33:26.160
to know much to know you don't fuck with the

598
00:33:26.160 --> 00:33:27.960
Hell's Angels, Okay, right?

599
00:33:28.000 --> 00:33:28.920
Wrong or indifferent?

600
00:33:29.279 --> 00:33:31.480
That ain't people that you want to pick a fight

601
00:33:31.519 --> 00:33:32.599
with or mess with.

602
00:33:33.039 --> 00:33:33.759
That ain't cool.

603
00:33:35.119 --> 00:33:38.000
So this is a lot of information, right, detectives writing

604
00:33:38.000 --> 00:33:40.119
all this down, and the south Side continued to talk.

605
00:33:41.000 --> 00:33:44.799
He then gave another bit of information that was literally

606
00:33:44.920 --> 00:33:52.240
like somewhat shocking. All right, Heather's boyfriend before Ryan, he

607
00:33:52.359 --> 00:33:57.279
had been recently murdered. Her boyfriend was murdered before she

608
00:33:57.359 --> 00:34:03.359
then started dating Ryan. Wait what like wait, what there's

609
00:34:03.400 --> 00:34:06.640
another murder like tied up in this And yeah, that

610
00:34:06.799 --> 00:34:10.159
was true. His name was Roman and Roman was actually

611
00:34:10.239 --> 00:34:14.000
very good friends with Ryan. So that, as you can

612
00:34:14.039 --> 00:34:16.400
imagine right now, opened up a whole new world of

613
00:34:16.519 --> 00:34:19.159
possibilities in this case, how many people do you know

614
00:34:19.679 --> 00:34:23.440
that have had two boyfriends shot and or murdered and

615
00:34:23.480 --> 00:34:25.119
then they themselves were.

616
00:34:25.039 --> 00:34:26.360
Murdered after that?

617
00:34:27.280 --> 00:34:30.199
Like, wow, to put all of this into perspective, there's

618
00:34:30.239 --> 00:34:34.480
a lot of violence and pistol whippings and drugs and

619
00:34:34.800 --> 00:34:35.519
murders going on.

620
00:34:35.559 --> 00:34:38.079
I mean, this is just wild, okay.

621
00:34:38.960 --> 00:34:43.599
But eventually it would also be clarified that that party

622
00:34:43.679 --> 00:34:46.320
remembered there was a fight. That's why Southside Eric moved out,

623
00:34:46.400 --> 00:34:48.880
was because he and Ryan were fighting over a party. Well,

624
00:34:48.920 --> 00:34:51.920
that party that was being thrown was actually a party

625
00:34:51.960 --> 00:34:56.679
being thrown in memory of Heather's murdered ex boyfriend Roman.

626
00:34:57.320 --> 00:34:59.519
That's why they were having this big party. So when

627
00:34:59.519 --> 00:35:02.679
this big party is being thrown, Richie, the former roommate,

628
00:35:02.719 --> 00:35:05.039
shows up with his little brother and another guy that

629
00:35:05.079 --> 00:35:07.039
nobody knew his real name, but he went by the

630
00:35:07.119 --> 00:35:10.039
name Phoenix. Well, they showed up to the party even

631
00:35:10.119 --> 00:35:12.679
after Richie had been kicked out of this house on

632
00:35:12.840 --> 00:35:17.840
not so good terms. So after all of this was

633
00:35:18.000 --> 00:35:20.239
said and done, and he gave as much information as

634
00:35:20.280 --> 00:35:24.239
he could Southside Eric got down to the nutcut and said, look,

635
00:35:24.639 --> 00:35:26.519
Richie is the one that I think might be involved

636
00:35:26.559 --> 00:35:29.079
in these shootings U and I do know where he

637
00:35:29.119 --> 00:35:30.679
is right now, like as far as where he lives,

638
00:35:30.719 --> 00:35:32.440
if you want me to give that information, which of.

639
00:35:32.400 --> 00:35:33.400
Course he did.

640
00:35:33.559 --> 00:35:35.119
So I know that was a lot of information, but

641
00:35:35.159 --> 00:35:36.880
I hope you can kind of get the picture here

642
00:35:36.920 --> 00:35:38.639
that there was a lot of a lot of stuff

643
00:35:38.679 --> 00:35:43.480
going on. So it turned out that when the initial

644
00:35:43.519 --> 00:35:46.280
shooting or the crime scene was being taped off in

645
00:35:46.360 --> 00:35:50.320
all of that, the landlord of the home had shown

646
00:35:50.400 --> 00:35:53.760
up and another cop that was on scene at that

647
00:35:53.920 --> 00:35:57.639
time during those initial hours of the investigation, had questioned

648
00:35:57.639 --> 00:36:02.320
her and had said, look, if you're the landlord, you know,

649
00:36:02.360 --> 00:36:04.679
are there any known issues at this house? Are there

650
00:36:04.679 --> 00:36:07.000
anything that anything that you've been dealing with or anything

651
00:36:07.000 --> 00:36:08.800
you might could give us to let us, you know,

652
00:36:08.960 --> 00:36:11.320
kind of understand what might be going on here. And

653
00:36:11.360 --> 00:36:13.840
she said, look, this is all I know. I have

654
00:36:13.880 --> 00:36:18.760
a rental agreement with Ryan Ritchie and Southside Eric. She

655
00:36:18.880 --> 00:36:21.360
never mentioned that she had a rental agreement with Alicia,

656
00:36:21.519 --> 00:36:23.599
but y'all, it makes sense right because it was a

657
00:36:23.639 --> 00:36:26.400
brand new transition Alicia had just moved in just a

658
00:36:26.440 --> 00:36:31.920
few days, like two weeks prior to this shooting. Landlord

659
00:36:32.000 --> 00:36:35.280
also confirmed that she had spoken to Ryan days before

660
00:36:36.280 --> 00:36:39.039
about the rent being late, and he promised that he

661
00:36:39.079 --> 00:36:41.079
would put the rent money in a cigarette box on

662
00:36:41.079 --> 00:36:44.079
the barbecue grill. She went and picked it up on

663
00:36:44.119 --> 00:36:47.559
December the nineteenth. When she was there, she tried to

664
00:36:47.599 --> 00:36:49.960
do an inspection, but she found that the locks had

665
00:36:50.000 --> 00:36:52.960
been changed, and so that was against policy. So she

666
00:36:53.039 --> 00:36:55.559
called Ryan and she said, look, bro, first of all,

667
00:36:55.639 --> 00:36:58.840
only half the rent is in this cigarette box, and

668
00:36:59.119 --> 00:37:02.239
you can't change the law on this house. That's against policy.

669
00:37:02.960 --> 00:37:05.079
And Eric said, I know, I know, I'm sorry. He

670
00:37:05.199 --> 00:37:08.360
explained the situation about you know, squirrely roommates and people

671
00:37:08.360 --> 00:37:11.039
being kicked out, and then he also said that he

672
00:37:11.199 --> 00:37:15.400
was mad at Southside Eric for skipping out on the

673
00:37:15.440 --> 00:37:18.039
rent and moving out and running off with the money.

674
00:37:18.480 --> 00:37:21.239
But you know, he would come up with the money

675
00:37:21.320 --> 00:37:23.719
as soon as he could so in a trust but

676
00:37:23.960 --> 00:37:28.880
verify situation. The police asked her, okay, well, have there

677
00:37:28.920 --> 00:37:32.039
been any parties that have been an issue at this house,

678
00:37:32.079 --> 00:37:35.760
because remember that's what Eric said their blow up was about.

679
00:37:35.960 --> 00:37:40.119
And she said yes, parties had been an issue, she said.

680
00:37:40.159 --> 00:37:43.239
Matter of fact, police had been called to the house

681
00:37:43.599 --> 00:37:46.760
towards the end of October because there was a party

682
00:37:46.800 --> 00:37:50.199
there where some people had shown up uninvited, and when

683
00:37:50.239 --> 00:37:54.039
they were kicked out of that party, shots were allegedly fired.

684
00:37:53.719 --> 00:37:54.199
In the air.

685
00:37:55.800 --> 00:37:59.719
Okay, well, now it's looking a lot like that mentioned

686
00:37:59.760 --> 00:38:02.880
part that the landlord is talking about was probably the

687
00:38:02.920 --> 00:38:05.599
same one that Richie and his friends had shown up

688
00:38:05.679 --> 00:38:09.599
to uninvited. If shots were actually fired at that party,

689
00:38:09.639 --> 00:38:12.559
someone's pulling the trigger at the party? Was that possibly

690
00:38:12.599 --> 00:38:18.159
a precursor to this? Now, murder and attempted murder, guns, drugs,

691
00:38:18.199 --> 00:38:21.840
and violent wildness seemed to be a constant theme at

692
00:38:21.880 --> 00:38:26.000
this house lately, so detectives continued to work these leads

693
00:38:26.039 --> 00:38:29.719
to follow up on any information, interviewing more people. In

694
00:38:29.760 --> 00:38:34.880
those days that passed, and incredibly, y'all, Ryan not only

695
00:38:34.920 --> 00:38:42.360
would survive his surgery, but he would start recovering. He

696
00:38:42.360 --> 00:38:45.800
would start making progress, and police would continue to monitor

697
00:38:45.880 --> 00:38:48.039
this progress and hopes that he might be able to

698
00:38:48.079 --> 00:38:52.320
talk to them more clearly as he healed, and amazingly,

699
00:38:52.920 --> 00:38:56.880
behind the feats of all things you would expect. On

700
00:38:57.079 --> 00:39:01.840
January thirty. First, Ryan Waller was able to speak to

701
00:39:01.920 --> 00:39:08.039
police and give more insight on this situation. It's just unbelievable.

702
00:39:08.960 --> 00:39:12.320
So a detective shows up and he goes and he

703
00:39:12.400 --> 00:39:13.280
interviews Ryan.

704
00:39:13.400 --> 00:39:14.039
Ryan was there.

705
00:39:14.119 --> 00:39:17.000
His dad's name was Donald. Donald was there as well,

706
00:39:17.559 --> 00:39:21.320
and so during this interview, he showed Ryan a total

707
00:39:21.599 --> 00:39:26.000
of twenty seven pictures and he asked him did he

708
00:39:26.119 --> 00:39:29.679
know any of the people in the pictures, and Ryan said, look,

709
00:39:29.760 --> 00:39:31.239
before you even looked at the picture, he said, look,

710
00:39:31.239 --> 00:39:33.599
I already know it's Richie. Richie is who shot me.

711
00:39:33.719 --> 00:39:37.320
I know it for sure. Okay, great, but remember police

712
00:39:37.360 --> 00:39:39.320
still have to solidify the case and they have to

713
00:39:39.360 --> 00:39:41.800
do everything required step by step, and they have to

714
00:39:42.159 --> 00:39:46.239
make sure they're building a solid case and do everything.

715
00:39:48.119 --> 00:39:50.679
In detail. So Ryan looks at the.

716
00:39:50.599 --> 00:39:53.960
Pictures and he identified Southside Eric first in the photos

717
00:39:54.000 --> 00:39:55.920
and he said, look, this is Eric. He's going to

718
00:39:56.000 --> 00:40:00.000
know everything about Richie. They had once been really really tough.

719
00:40:01.000 --> 00:40:04.039
Richie then also picked out a photo Uh or excuse me.

720
00:40:04.119 --> 00:40:07.159
Ryan then also picked out a photo of Richie and

721
00:40:07.280 --> 00:40:10.400
explained that's him. I had kicked him out because he

722
00:40:10.400 --> 00:40:14.480
couldn't afford the rent. And then he added a detail

723
00:40:14.840 --> 00:40:17.360
that police didn't know. And what's really cool here is

724
00:40:17.360 --> 00:40:20.320
that although Ryan has this brain injury, everything he's saying

725
00:40:20.360 --> 00:40:22.760
now is making total sense. It's aligning with what everyone

726
00:40:22.840 --> 00:40:26.719
else has said. He told the officers. Yeah, I kicked

727
00:40:26.800 --> 00:40:29.719
him out, he said, but Richie would always come in

728
00:40:30.119 --> 00:40:33.280
through the sliding glass doors on the back even if

729
00:40:33.320 --> 00:40:36.000
it was locked. He said, Richie would kind of pick

730
00:40:36.039 --> 00:40:38.360
it up and push it off of the track and

731
00:40:38.400 --> 00:40:40.079
he was able to open it.

732
00:40:40.599 --> 00:40:41.519
Well, that was big.

733
00:40:41.559 --> 00:40:44.599
This was huge because this would explain why the glass

734
00:40:45.000 --> 00:40:48.599
on the back door wasn't shattered, as if someone was

735
00:40:48.760 --> 00:40:52.280
breaking in, you could sneak in just by lifting the

736
00:40:52.320 --> 00:40:54.760
door off the track, and you could try to break

737
00:40:54.760 --> 00:40:59.519
in quietly. But the effect on Ryan's brain injury was

738
00:40:59.559 --> 00:41:01.519
still a parent and I want to be very clear

739
00:41:01.559 --> 00:41:05.320
on that. Okay, obviously he's made huge strides here. But

740
00:41:05.840 --> 00:41:09.320
when he was talking, he still said that he only

741
00:41:09.400 --> 00:41:12.840
had one roommate, which was true because Alisha was there,

742
00:41:12.880 --> 00:41:15.559
but hell Raiser Eric in her broke up right around

743
00:41:15.559 --> 00:41:20.039
that timeframe, and so hell Raiser had moved out. But

744
00:41:20.320 --> 00:41:24.519
he couldn't name Alisha his roommate. He couldn't give her

745
00:41:24.639 --> 00:41:27.039
name so the detective brought it up and was like

746
00:41:27.480 --> 00:41:30.920
something something Alicia, and Ryan said, ooh, that sounds familiar,

747
00:41:31.679 --> 00:41:35.159
so it was familiar to him. He couldn't remember seeing

748
00:41:35.159 --> 00:41:38.039
Alicia the day of the incident, but he did remember

749
00:41:38.679 --> 00:41:42.679
seeing her at some point afterwards and her asking if

750
00:41:42.679 --> 00:41:45.559
he was in pain, and that aligned with what Alicia

751
00:41:45.639 --> 00:41:48.320
had said about her getting home and giving him some advil.

752
00:41:49.800 --> 00:41:52.039
He said that he had changed the locks two weeks

753
00:41:52.079 --> 00:41:54.960
before the incident. That aligned with what the landlord had said.

754
00:41:55.800 --> 00:41:58.079
And he thought that Richie was the one that shot

755
00:41:58.159 --> 00:41:59.639
or he knew Richie was the one that shot him,

756
00:41:59.719 --> 00:42:01.639
but he thought it was because Richie was coming in

757
00:42:01.960 --> 00:42:06.800
to burglarise or steal from him. He became very frustrated

758
00:42:06.840 --> 00:42:11.840
though in that interview because he's like, I can't remember Christmas.

759
00:42:11.960 --> 00:42:13.800
He's like, it's so weird. I don't know why I

760
00:42:13.840 --> 00:42:16.920
can't remember Christmas. And that's when his dad piped up

761
00:42:16.960 --> 00:42:19.880
and said, well, I tried to call Ryan on the

762
00:42:19.960 --> 00:42:24.800
twenty third, but I never was able to reach him again.

763
00:42:25.320 --> 00:42:28.000
This is aligning with the shooting having occurred late on

764
00:42:28.039 --> 00:42:30.840
the twenty second, early into the twenty third of December,

765
00:42:31.239 --> 00:42:34.159
not the twenty fifth, And this matters because the timeline

766
00:42:34.199 --> 00:42:38.280
matters when you're doing the investigation. So Ryan was asked

767
00:42:38.360 --> 00:42:41.119
what all should have been in the house whenever this

768
00:42:41.199 --> 00:42:44.079
incident took place, what might be missing? We'd like to

769
00:42:44.119 --> 00:42:46.960
know what we're looking for. He says, I had two

770
00:42:47.000 --> 00:42:49.599
shotguns and I had a rifle with a folding stock,

771
00:42:49.880 --> 00:42:55.599
and he said those were actually Romans, Heather's murdered ex boyfriend.

772
00:42:56.280 --> 00:42:57.280
Those were his guns.

773
00:42:57.519 --> 00:42:57.800
He said.

774
00:42:57.840 --> 00:43:00.320
There was a Compact nine, which was Heather's. He said

775
00:43:00.360 --> 00:43:02.639
I had a small laptop, and he said if I

776
00:43:02.679 --> 00:43:04.880
had any money, it would have been in a safe

777
00:43:04.920 --> 00:43:06.960
in my closet. I probably wouldn't have had more than

778
00:43:06.960 --> 00:43:12.440
five hundred dollars. Maybe some weed, maybe some pills whatever. Well,

779
00:43:12.559 --> 00:43:15.920
none of these things he listed were found in the home,

780
00:43:16.559 --> 00:43:21.400
minus Heathers nine millimeter, which was stuffed in those couch cushions.

781
00:43:21.440 --> 00:43:26.199
You remember that part. So this means potential burglary claims

782
00:43:26.480 --> 00:43:30.119
were looking to be the most promising motive here for

783
00:43:30.159 --> 00:43:34.800
what had gone down. So police would let Ryan rest

784
00:43:34.880 --> 00:43:36.599
and then they would go back and they would interview

785
00:43:36.679 --> 00:43:39.639
him again on February the second, and this time they

786
00:43:39.639 --> 00:43:42.679
did a photo lineup and so they brought him six

787
00:43:42.719 --> 00:43:46.360
individuals in a photo lineup, and Ryan said the one

788
00:43:46.400 --> 00:43:50.000
that looked most familiar to him as the person that

789
00:43:50.079 --> 00:43:53.519
he said was with Richie, because he said there were two,

790
00:43:53.800 --> 00:43:57.519
was person number six. Well, I can tell you, because

791
00:43:57.519 --> 00:44:00.840
I've looked at the file, that person number six was

792
00:44:00.880 --> 00:44:06.840
in fact Larry, Richie's dad. He added, though that he

793
00:44:06.880 --> 00:44:11.440
didn't know exactly what all Larry had done, because he said,

794
00:44:11.480 --> 00:44:13.760
I passed out right after Richie shot me in the

795
00:44:13.800 --> 00:44:16.199
face with a revolver, he said, but I can tell

796
00:44:16.199 --> 00:44:19.760
you that Larry was wearing a leather biker jacket when

797
00:44:19.760 --> 00:44:23.320
he was there. Now, his memory was foggy, but he said,

798
00:44:23.360 --> 00:44:25.800
I remember I was on the couch with Heather. I

799
00:44:25.840 --> 00:44:29.000
heard a noise. I got up, and I found that

800
00:44:29.119 --> 00:44:33.159
Richie was coming through the glass sliding doors. But the

801
00:44:33.199 --> 00:44:37.400
next thing he remembered was laying on the living room floor,

802
00:44:37.760 --> 00:44:40.400
waking up and seeing a pool of blood by the

803
00:44:40.440 --> 00:44:43.480
glass sliding doors. And then he said it was like

804
00:44:43.559 --> 00:44:48.559
flashes of bloody handprints on the walls, maybe his own.

805
00:44:48.880 --> 00:44:50.840
And he eventually said, I was able to get up

806
00:44:50.840 --> 00:44:52.920
in the living room. I went over and I tried

807
00:44:52.920 --> 00:44:54.519
to wake up Heather. But I couldn't get her to

808
00:44:54.559 --> 00:44:56.519
wake up. I went in the bathroom.

809
00:44:56.599 --> 00:44:56.840
He said.

810
00:44:56.880 --> 00:44:58.480
That's when I was totally shocked. I looked in the

811
00:44:58.480 --> 00:45:01.800
mirror and I was covered in blood. This is horrifying

812
00:45:01.840 --> 00:45:03.760
to me. He doesn't know what's going on, and he's

813
00:45:03.760 --> 00:45:07.159
seeing himself just covered in blood. And then he remembered

814
00:45:07.320 --> 00:45:09.840
laying down in his bed. But the next thing he

815
00:45:09.880 --> 00:45:12.199
remembered was seeing lights in the windows, and he said,

816
00:45:12.199 --> 00:45:13.920
I tried to leave out of the back door, but

817
00:45:14.000 --> 00:45:18.079
then I got arrested. Well, that's really aligning with the

818
00:45:18.079 --> 00:45:22.559
investigation incredibly, it's making sense. But then he said he

819
00:45:22.599 --> 00:45:27.840
remembered something else. He said, but wait, I remember Larry

820
00:45:28.039 --> 00:45:32.960
pointing a gun at me while Richie was going down

821
00:45:33.039 --> 00:45:37.039
the hall. But he's like recalling this while he's talking.

822
00:45:37.119 --> 00:45:39.639
He's like, but it doesn't it can't be the same incident.

823
00:45:39.679 --> 00:45:41.840
It had to be a different incident. But as he's

824
00:45:41.840 --> 00:45:44.480
trying to remember, he can't decipher it. His memory was

825
00:45:44.519 --> 00:45:47.400
so affected by his brain injury. But he said, I

826
00:45:47.480 --> 00:45:49.679
know the dad pointed a gun at me. I know

827
00:45:49.760 --> 00:45:53.920
he did, but it doesn't fit in this story, all right,

828
00:45:54.000 --> 00:45:56.679
So that was noted. And while all of this was

829
00:45:56.719 --> 00:46:02.239
great evidence. To have Ryan direct naming his attackers was perfect.

830
00:46:02.280 --> 00:46:04.199
They needed that, but they would have to have more

831
00:46:04.239 --> 00:46:07.880
to be able to arrest and convict these guys. Any

832
00:46:08.000 --> 00:46:10.599
criminal defense attorney worth their salt would start with the fact,

833
00:46:10.639 --> 00:46:14.079
Oh no, Ryan's memory is unreliable, he's got a brain injury.

834
00:46:14.119 --> 00:46:16.400
Everything you have is circumstantial. Hopefully you can see that.

835
00:46:16.599 --> 00:46:19.360
So this case had to be built much stronger. Even

836
00:46:19.400 --> 00:46:24.000
though this was perfect evidence saying that's who shot me, great,

837
00:46:24.079 --> 00:46:28.960
we needed that. Now there was another interview that police conducted,

838
00:46:29.320 --> 00:46:31.559
and this was what the guy named Robert, and this

839
00:46:31.639 --> 00:46:35.519
would now become very handy since Ryan was able to

840
00:46:35.519 --> 00:46:39.199
give them this further information. Robert was in this friend

841
00:46:39.239 --> 00:46:42.880
group with Ryan, okay, and he knew a lot about Richie,

842
00:46:43.199 --> 00:46:47.840
even down to the fact that Robert Southside and Richie

843
00:46:47.880 --> 00:46:52.199
had met initially through this music party group known as SFL.

844
00:46:52.519 --> 00:46:53.800
And by the way, would you like to know what

845
00:46:53.880 --> 00:46:57.320
SFL stands for? Because I have the answer. They were

846
00:46:57.320 --> 00:47:00.519
in a music group SFL, which stood for Stoner's for Life.

847
00:47:01.280 --> 00:47:03.800
Richie was so involved he even had a tattooed on

848
00:47:03.840 --> 00:47:08.559
his back SFL. That's kind of lame, I'm sorry. You

849
00:47:08.599 --> 00:47:11.199
get sfl tattooed on your back, all right, But anyway,

850
00:47:12.159 --> 00:47:15.599
when asked why anyone if he in his opinion, in

851
00:47:15.639 --> 00:47:18.440
this guy Robert's opinion, do you have any reason to

852
00:47:18.440 --> 00:47:21.000
know why anyone would want to kill Heather? He was

853
00:47:21.039 --> 00:47:24.280
said yeah, he had no clue. He said, that's mind blowing.

854
00:47:24.360 --> 00:47:26.199
I can't even come up with the reason as to

855
00:47:26.239 --> 00:47:28.639
why anyone would want to kill Heather. So then the

856
00:47:28.639 --> 00:47:32.400
detective asked him, do you know who might want to

857
00:47:32.480 --> 00:47:38.800
kill Ryan? And his immediate answer, direct quote, was who wouldn't?

858
00:47:39.320 --> 00:47:44.000
WHOA what do you mean who wouldn't?

859
00:47:44.320 --> 00:47:47.960
He said, you know, Ryan had a lot of stuff

860
00:47:48.000 --> 00:47:51.119
going on there, but he said Richie was the guy

861
00:47:51.239 --> 00:47:54.119
that he believed would have done it. And he even

862
00:47:54.159 --> 00:47:56.920
brought up another incident that had happened just a few

863
00:47:57.039 --> 00:48:02.079
days before the shooting that Ryan had mentioned to him.

864
00:48:02.639 --> 00:48:05.440
Ryan told Robert that he was asleep in his bed

865
00:48:05.960 --> 00:48:08.559
and he woke up to a guy that he called

866
00:48:08.679 --> 00:48:13.079
Phoenix sitting on the sofa right by his bed staring

867
00:48:13.119 --> 00:48:16.159
at him. That's like creep factor one thousand, A wake

868
00:48:16.239 --> 00:48:18.679
up with a stranger in your room staring at you. Well,

869
00:48:18.719 --> 00:48:22.280
when Ryan saw him, he immediately reached over and grabbed

870
00:48:22.280 --> 00:48:24.400
his gun, and he drew down on the guy and

871
00:48:24.440 --> 00:48:27.880
pointed the gun at Phoenix. As he did that, he

872
00:48:27.880 --> 00:48:30.079
heard a voice. He allowed, watch out, he's got a gun,

873
00:48:30.119 --> 00:48:32.239
and he recognized that was Richie's voice.

874
00:48:32.360 --> 00:48:34.800
Richie was in the house too.

875
00:48:34.920 --> 00:48:38.480
But what this was all about, he wasn't exactly clear.

876
00:48:38.559 --> 00:48:40.159
He just knew that Ryan told him the story of

877
00:48:40.199 --> 00:48:44.079
pulling the gun on this guy Phoenix and Richie being there.

878
00:48:44.559 --> 00:48:47.639
But remember, Phoenix was the name that everyone had mentioned

879
00:48:47.639 --> 00:48:51.480
as an uninvited party guest alongside Richie just days prior

880
00:48:51.480 --> 00:48:56.039
to the shooting two. Robert also added the information that

881
00:48:56.239 --> 00:48:59.719
Phoenix was a friend of Richie's because he had met

882
00:48:59.760 --> 00:49:03.679
him and while they were doing time in prison together. Yes,

883
00:49:04.440 --> 00:49:06.480
if that tells you the caliber of these two guys,

884
00:49:06.599 --> 00:49:10.519
Richie and Phoenix, these two cats made friends in prison.

885
00:49:12.440 --> 00:49:15.079
Ryan also had told Robert that he had pistol whipped

886
00:49:15.159 --> 00:49:17.400
Richie when Richie tried to break in another time. So

887
00:49:17.440 --> 00:49:20.400
that's not two people that have said that pistol whipping incident.

888
00:49:21.679 --> 00:49:24.360
Well on December twenty second, so we're still building the

889
00:49:24.400 --> 00:49:28.119
timeline here, Robert said, for sure, he spoke to Heather

890
00:49:28.199 --> 00:49:32.119
and Ryan on December twenty second. They were fine, but

891
00:49:32.239 --> 00:49:35.679
he hadn't spoken to them again until he had the

892
00:49:35.719 --> 00:49:38.519
news broken to him about the shooting on December the

893
00:49:38.599 --> 00:49:43.000
twenty sixth. Again, Timeline is making sense. This had to

894
00:49:43.039 --> 00:49:45.400
have happened on the twenty third, and then on the

895
00:49:45.440 --> 00:49:48.760
twenty sixth is whenever he found out everything that had happened.

896
00:49:48.880 --> 00:49:50.519
All right, Well, what did you do when you found out?

897
00:49:50.960 --> 00:49:55.239
And Robert says, well, that's when I called my padna Chunk, Yes,

898
00:49:55.360 --> 00:50:00.000
Chunk like on the Goonies, you know, all right, Chunks.

899
00:50:00.000 --> 00:50:03.320
His real name was Brandon by the way, Okay, he said.

900
00:50:03.360 --> 00:50:05.360
I called Chunk and I said, oh my god, you know,

901
00:50:05.400 --> 00:50:06.559
did you hear what happened?

902
00:50:06.920 --> 00:50:07.800
Ryan was shot?

903
00:50:07.840 --> 00:50:11.880
Heather's dead? And Chunk said, yeah, I heard about it.

904
00:50:11.920 --> 00:50:12.320
He said.

905
00:50:12.400 --> 00:50:15.760
I called Richie's mom to see where Richie was and

906
00:50:15.800 --> 00:50:18.679
she said that he had run off to Fountain Hills,

907
00:50:18.719 --> 00:50:22.400
which was another area. Well, Robert told the cop, I

908
00:50:22.440 --> 00:50:25.480
just thought that was really odd that all of this

909
00:50:25.559 --> 00:50:28.719
went down, and then Richie happens to disappear and run

910
00:50:28.760 --> 00:50:32.079
off right after these shootings happened. And that's when Robert

911
00:50:32.079 --> 00:50:34.239
made up his mind. I think Richie is the one

912
00:50:34.239 --> 00:50:36.639
who did this. I think Richie murdered her, and I

913
00:50:36.679 --> 00:50:41.440
think Richie shot Ryan. So following that lead, police wanted

914
00:50:41.480 --> 00:50:45.760
to talk to Chunk. So they go through their basic

915
00:50:46.119 --> 00:50:49.639
introductions and then police just flat out cut to the Chase, which,

916
00:50:49.880 --> 00:50:51.599
by the way, is kind of funny because Chunk's last

917
00:50:51.639 --> 00:50:52.280
name is Chase.

918
00:50:52.519 --> 00:50:53.199
But anyway, I.

919
00:50:53.159 --> 00:50:56.320
Digress, So, like, all right, look, Chunk, we got word

920
00:50:56.360 --> 00:50:58.719
that Richie might be involved in a murder and he

921
00:50:58.800 --> 00:51:00.480
might be in the Fountain Hills area.

922
00:51:01.000 --> 00:51:02.440
And Chunk corrects.

923
00:51:02.079 --> 00:51:04.920
Them and he says, no, I don't think he's in

924
00:51:05.039 --> 00:51:09.079
Fountain Hills. I think he's in Paradise Valley. But he

925
00:51:09.159 --> 00:51:15.119
went to Paradise Valley, you know, before Christmas, not on

926
00:51:15.199 --> 00:51:19.519
Christmas Day whenever Ryan and all them were found. But

927
00:51:19.599 --> 00:51:23.199
guess what, that makes sense because if the shootings were

928
00:51:23.199 --> 00:51:26.960
to have occurred just a few days before Christmas, well,

929
00:51:26.960 --> 00:51:28.760
then of course that would have been when Richie would

930
00:51:28.760 --> 00:51:34.440
have run off before Christmas. Chunk also said he knew Phoenix.

931
00:51:34.480 --> 00:51:36.199
Phoenix was a real person. He said, I don't know

932
00:51:36.239 --> 00:51:39.639
his real name, but Phoenix had offered to pay Chunk

933
00:51:39.679 --> 00:51:42.719
for a ride out of town about the same time

934
00:51:43.000 --> 00:51:45.119
that Richie left out. Butt Chunk said, no, I didn't

935
00:51:45.119 --> 00:51:47.199
give him a ride, you know, I just didn't take

936
00:51:47.280 --> 00:51:50.679
him up on it. And Chunks said, look, I heard

937
00:51:50.760 --> 00:51:53.480
that Richie might be the guy that did this, but

938
00:51:53.559 --> 00:51:56.880
I don't think that he's capable of it. Well, with

939
00:51:56.960 --> 00:51:59.519
all of that information, police now felt like they had

940
00:51:59.639 --> 00:52:03.960
enough information to obtain an arrest warrant for Richie Lee

941
00:52:03.960 --> 00:52:07.280
Carver in the murder of Heather Kwan and the attempted

942
00:52:07.360 --> 00:52:11.159
murder of Ryan Waller. But Richie wasn't someone that police

943
00:52:11.159 --> 00:52:13.480
were willing to play games with, and he was not

944
00:52:13.800 --> 00:52:18.920
new to the criminal life. He had a history of drugs, crime, violence,

945
00:52:19.199 --> 00:52:22.239
prison time. Okay, so this was not someone to play

946
00:52:22.280 --> 00:52:24.920
around with. So what they decided to do was to

947
00:52:24.960 --> 00:52:29.599
deploy their Rapid Deployment unit to go take down Richie Carver.

948
00:52:30.039 --> 00:52:32.840
And this was a very tense operation and they knew

949
00:52:32.880 --> 00:52:35.880
that he had likely already killed somebody tried to kill

950
00:52:35.920 --> 00:52:38.559
someone else, and so he would most likely be ready

951
00:52:38.599 --> 00:52:44.719
to fight. In result of that knowledge, they got all dressed,

952
00:52:44.760 --> 00:52:48.320
they got in their tactical gear, ballistic helmets, vests. The

953
00:52:48.400 --> 00:52:51.159
team was briefed on everything, saying, we need to take

954
00:52:51.199 --> 00:52:53.559
this guy into custody, and then we want to affect

955
00:52:53.559 --> 00:52:55.719
a search warrant on his home to try to get

956
00:52:55.719 --> 00:52:59.159
any evidence collection that we can. So they make their

957
00:52:59.239 --> 00:53:03.480
plan and around seven pm they surround the house and

958
00:53:03.519 --> 00:53:07.880
an officer starts banging on the door Sheriff's office or

959
00:53:07.920 --> 00:53:12.119
police department search warrant, but nobody came to the door.

960
00:53:13.599 --> 00:53:13.920
Again.

961
00:53:14.039 --> 00:53:17.880
He banged on the door, please, police department come to

962
00:53:17.920 --> 00:53:23.320
the door, search warrant, but it remained silent. Nobody made

963
00:53:23.760 --> 00:53:27.239
a sound. So police were not playing games. They weren't

964
00:53:27.239 --> 00:53:29.599
gonna wait to be ambush or anything like that. So

965
00:53:29.639 --> 00:53:31.599
they went ahead and they kicked that damn door down.

966
00:53:31.800 --> 00:53:34.360
The team went in, they spread out, and they started

967
00:53:34.400 --> 00:53:37.519
clearing the home room by room, but very quickly. When

968
00:53:37.559 --> 00:53:40.360
they first came through that door, they found that another

969
00:53:40.599 --> 00:53:43.599
entry door was barricaded, and so they had to switch

970
00:53:43.639 --> 00:53:46.960
their plans reaching through another doorway to make jury. And

971
00:53:47.000 --> 00:53:48.920
you got to think about this. You don't know what's

972
00:53:48.920 --> 00:53:50.920
on the other side of that door. You don't know

973
00:53:50.920 --> 00:53:53.159
if someone's laying down with a shotgun or an ar

974
00:53:53.280 --> 00:53:55.719
or anything like that, ready to mow down every officer here.

975
00:53:56.320 --> 00:53:58.880
So they have to do this quickly. And swiftly in

976
00:53:58.960 --> 00:54:02.880
these doors. Being barren is very dangerous. So once they

977
00:54:02.960 --> 00:54:06.599
made it through that doorway they breached. They didn't see anybody.

978
00:54:06.639 --> 00:54:08.880
They cleared the rooms, but they came to one door

979
00:54:09.039 --> 00:54:13.239
of a bedroom that was locked. Again, not knowing what

980
00:54:13.320 --> 00:54:15.119
was behind it, they didn't know if he was armed

981
00:54:15.119 --> 00:54:17.960
and lying in wait. Officers deployed to what are called

982
00:54:18.000 --> 00:54:21.880
avon round's boom boom into the doorknob, which blew the

983
00:54:21.920 --> 00:54:26.719
door open. They rushed in, but again they found no one.

984
00:54:26.800 --> 00:54:32.719
The house was empty. Thank god, nothing terrible took place

985
00:54:33.079 --> 00:54:36.199
inside that home. The house was secured and it was

986
00:54:36.239 --> 00:54:40.840
immediately turned over to detectives to search for evidence. But

987
00:54:40.920 --> 00:54:45.119
police were very soon after able to track down Richie's

988
00:54:45.239 --> 00:54:48.079
physical location and they were able to take him into

989
00:54:48.119 --> 00:54:52.000
custody without incident, because if he had planned to fight,

990
00:54:52.840 --> 00:54:56.840
after he looked around and he saw all the officers

991
00:54:56.840 --> 00:55:01.239
there ready to handle the situation likely changed his mind.

992
00:55:02.320 --> 00:55:04.400
All he said after he looked around and saw the

993
00:55:04.440 --> 00:55:08.679
officers was I want an attorney, And just like that,

994
00:55:09.440 --> 00:55:12.679
getting any possible answers from him was no longer an option.

995
00:55:13.400 --> 00:55:15.599
Police would have to build their case without so much

996
00:55:15.599 --> 00:55:20.519
as a word from their main suspect, so police shifted gears.

997
00:55:21.079 --> 00:55:23.639
They wanted now to locate and have a word with

998
00:55:23.719 --> 00:55:28.079
Richie's dad, Larry. They were curious. They wanted to see

999
00:55:28.159 --> 00:55:30.760
what exactly might he have to say about his name

1000
00:55:30.840 --> 00:55:34.480
being brought up in a murder and attempted murder investigation.

1001
00:55:35.760 --> 00:55:38.599
Having Richie behind bars that was a huge step in

1002
00:55:38.639 --> 00:55:41.880
the case. But this was far from over and certainly

1003
00:55:41.920 --> 00:55:46.760
nowhere near a slam dunk. But just when detectives thought

1004
00:55:46.760 --> 00:55:50.119
that this nightmare of a case couldn't get more frustrating,

1005
00:55:50.679 --> 00:55:54.679
it would take a final turn that nobody saw coming.

1006
00:55:55.519 --> 00:55:59.960
Because while investigators were busy tracking down Larry, police headquarters

1007
00:56:00.480 --> 00:56:03.960
got a phone call, not from a witness, not from

1008
00:56:04.000 --> 00:56:08.199
an informant, and definitely not from someone anyone expected to

1009
00:56:08.320 --> 00:56:12.239
voluntarily speak up. The person on the other end of

1010
00:56:12.239 --> 00:56:15.840
the line didn't ask for a lawyer and didn't ask

1011
00:56:15.880 --> 00:56:21.519
any questions. Instead, they started with a single but direct statement,

1012
00:56:22.760 --> 00:56:27.800
it wasn't Richie. Following those three words, over the next

1013
00:56:27.880 --> 00:56:32.840
few minutes, alibis would collapse and expected loyalties would be

1014
00:56:32.920 --> 00:56:36.960
shattered because the most dangerous person in the room isn't

1015
00:56:37.000 --> 00:56:39.440
always the one threatening the loudest and holding the gun.

1016
00:56:40.360 --> 00:56:43.280
Sometimes it's the silent one sitting in the corner who's

1017
00:56:43.280 --> 00:56:57.400
simply holding the truth. Stay tuned for Part three.
