DTL - Part 13: Mistaken Identity

DTL - Part 13: Mistaken Identity

Mari Ann Fowler, was a beloved educator and wife of former Louisiana Elections Commissioner Jerry Fowler. On Christmas Eve 2002, while stopping for sandwiches at a Port Allen shopping plaza en route to visit her incarcerated husband, the 65-year-old vanished in broad daylight—leaving behind spilled food, broken nails, and a community in shock amongst the killings of many south Louisiana women at the hands of a now confirmed serial killer.

Derrick Todd Lee (DTL) terrorized the Baton Rouge and Lafayette Louisiana. A Serial Killer who took the lives of at least (7) women in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Lee’s reign of terror finally ended in late May of 2003 when he was captured in Atlanta, GA after being linked by DNA to several of the murders.

1
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:12.839
In the sultry heat of Louisiana, where the bayous whisper

2
00:00:12.919 --> 00:00:16.079
secrets and the air hangs heavy with the scent of magnolias,

3
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:20.480
a darkness lurked beneath the surface. Derrick Todd Lee was

4
00:00:20.480 --> 00:00:24.160
a man whose charm masked a sinister reality. He was

5
00:00:24.199 --> 00:00:28.600
a monster. Lee, a seemingly ordinary man with a disarming smile,

6
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:31.480
led a double life that would unravel in a series

7
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:34.079
of murders in the capital city of Baton Rouge and

8
00:00:34.119 --> 00:00:37.799
the surrounding areas. As the first reports of disappearances and

9
00:00:37.920 --> 00:00:42.119
murders began to surface, South Louisiana was thrust into a nightmare,

10
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:46.000
igniting a frantic search for answers. The true horror was

11
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:49.280
just beginning, and the hunt for a serial killer, eventually

12
00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:52.000
known by just three letters, would reveal not only the

13
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.520
depths of Dereck Todd Lee's depravity, but also the resilience

14
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:58.479
of those most affected by his evil acts, the families

15
00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:11.159
and the survivors. This is DTL. Investigators on the Baton

16
00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:13.280
Rouge Cyrial Task Force were in the throes of their

17
00:01:13.319 --> 00:01:15.959
investigation when leeds came in that would pull them in

18
00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:18.959
all different directions. One woman called in a tip that

19
00:01:19.040 --> 00:01:21.079
she had seen a white work style truck on the

20
00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:23.799
side of the road right before Danay's body was found.

21
00:01:24.280 --> 00:01:26.640
Peaking interest was the part where she described a black

22
00:01:26.719 --> 00:01:29.439
female that appeared to be slumped over in the passenger

23
00:01:29.480 --> 00:01:32.760
seat of that truck. As the tipster explained, she had

24
00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:35.239
to pause right next to this white truck to let

25
00:01:35.319 --> 00:01:38.200
another car pass in front of them, when, to her surprise,

26
00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:40.760
a black male popped up in the driver's seat and

27
00:01:40.840 --> 00:01:43.920
startled her. He seemed startled too that someone was next

28
00:01:43.920 --> 00:01:46.079
to his vehicle, but he gave a kind smile to

29
00:01:46.120 --> 00:01:48.400
her before she pulled off and went on down the road.

30
00:01:48.840 --> 00:01:51.159
It wasn't until Dannay's body was found that she put

31
00:01:51.159 --> 00:01:53.280
two and two together that that may have been her

32
00:01:53.400 --> 00:01:57.480
slumped over. When she called. She described the man in detail.

33
00:01:57.879 --> 00:02:00.719
He was a very well groomed man with a fresh haircut,

34
00:02:00.840 --> 00:02:02.879
almost like that of a young boy. But he was

35
00:02:02.879 --> 00:02:05.400
in his late thirties to early forties. He had a

36
00:02:05.439 --> 00:02:08.680
big nose, and he was dark. This was something that

37
00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:11.240
would be somewhat dismissed, however, because the driver was a

38
00:02:11.280 --> 00:02:14.479
black male. According to the witness and the FBI said,

39
00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:17.960
this killer would be White. That said, the task force

40
00:02:18.039 --> 00:02:20.360
knew that they had a footprint from a shoe believed

41
00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:23.080
to be worn by the killer. At Dnay's murder site.

42
00:02:23.360 --> 00:02:25.599
Denay had been slammed into a tree, as evidenced by

43
00:02:25.680 --> 00:02:28.240
blood pooled under the trunk, and the footprint had been

44
00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:31.719
pulled from them nearby mud. Whether to release the information

45
00:02:31.759 --> 00:02:34.520
to the public or not, that was now the main discussion.

46
00:02:35.159 --> 00:02:38.240
Release it and someone may recognize the shoe, but at

47
00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:40.759
the same time, the killer may then throw them out,

48
00:02:40.759 --> 00:02:43.719
which would destroy any chance of linking him that way

49
00:02:43.800 --> 00:02:46.960
if it was found. It was eventually decided that releasing

50
00:02:46.960 --> 00:02:49.879
the information would be the best bet, but more would

51
00:02:49.919 --> 00:02:53.439
happen before that final decision was made. Now DNA had

52
00:02:53.479 --> 00:02:57.759
confirmed that the same man killed Dnay, Pam Gina, and Murray,

53
00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:01.439
and this was wild. Race victims isn't the norm for

54
00:03:01.479 --> 00:03:04.520
serial killers, but here it was on paper and confirmed.

55
00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:08.879
Just two days before Christmas, everyone would learn that Dnay's

56
00:03:08.919 --> 00:03:12.039
death was now tied to the case. Everyone was just

57
00:03:12.120 --> 00:03:15.800
shaking their heads in disbelief. This killer needed to be caught,

58
00:03:16.080 --> 00:03:20.479
and caught now he should be behind bars. Louisiana has

59
00:03:20.520 --> 00:03:23.639
the highest per capita incarceration rate in the country, and

60
00:03:23.719 --> 00:03:26.599
not just poor people and drug dealers either. This list

61
00:03:26.639 --> 00:03:29.719
included once powerful people had fallen from grace, like former

62
00:03:29.719 --> 00:03:33.680
Commissioner of Elections in Louisiana Jerry Fowler. So what had

63
00:03:33.719 --> 00:03:36.759
he done to find himself behind bars? Well, part of

64
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:40.520
the commissioner's duties is to purchase voting machines from approved vendors,

65
00:03:40.919 --> 00:03:44.360
and in short, from nineteen ninety one to nineteen ninety nine,

66
00:03:44.599 --> 00:03:48.479
Commissioner Fowler conspired with a man named Pascal Ricci and

67
00:03:48.520 --> 00:03:52.360
a few others to receive kickbacks for purchasing machines from him.

68
00:03:52.639 --> 00:03:56.280
Basically stated, the state of Louisiana would pay inflated prices

69
00:03:56.319 --> 00:04:00.639
for the voting machines, counters, and the installation of the counters.

70
00:04:01.039 --> 00:04:04.120
The vendors would then pay kickbacks to the commissioner, which

71
00:04:04.120 --> 00:04:07.000
he didn't claim on his income taxes. But as you know,

72
00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:10.800
he got busted. While his income tax returns showed a

73
00:04:10.840 --> 00:04:14.000
gross income of around one hundred and sixty thousand dollars annually,

74
00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:17.240
he was really making more around five hundred and eighty

75
00:04:17.319 --> 00:04:21.199
thousand dollars annually for those years. Long story short, he

76
00:04:21.240 --> 00:04:24.319
and his co conspirators were caught and all were sentenced

77
00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:28.720
to prison. Ultimately, Commissioner Fowler pled guilty to taking nearly

78
00:04:28.879 --> 00:04:32.120
one million dollars in kickbacks, which his attorney said he

79
00:04:32.199 --> 00:04:35.240
spent on gambling. The party was now over, though, and

80
00:04:35.319 --> 00:04:38.800
he would be spending time behind bars, specifically sentenced to

81
00:04:39.000 --> 00:04:43.000
five years. This was no doubt a very distressing situation

82
00:04:43.120 --> 00:04:46.439
for his wife's sixty five year old Maryanne Fowler. She

83
00:04:46.639 --> 00:04:49.120
loved her husband and after he was sent to prison,

84
00:04:49.399 --> 00:04:53.120
she would remain devoted to him, visiting regularly. As you

85
00:04:53.120 --> 00:04:56.079
can imagine, most people were finishing up their shopping and

86
00:04:56.120 --> 00:05:01.639
blissfully spending money as everyone prepared for Christmas, well almost everyone.

87
00:05:02.240 --> 00:05:04.920
Dnay's family was still in shock and grieving her death,

88
00:05:05.160 --> 00:05:08.120
having just lay her in the ground, But someone else

89
00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:11.120
was also struggling through this Christmas holiday as well. And

90
00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:13.600
most people in their mid sixties are already through the

91
00:05:13.639 --> 00:05:16.800
season of raising young children. They should be relaxed and

92
00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:19.680
looking forward to seeing their grandkids open gifts and with

93
00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:23.279
a much more subdued responsibility for the holidays. But for

94
00:05:23.360 --> 00:05:26.480
sixty five year old Marian Fowler, visiting her husband in

95
00:05:26.480 --> 00:05:29.839
federal prison for Christmas wasn't the type of holiday memory

96
00:05:29.920 --> 00:05:32.240
she had hoped for, but it was what she had

97
00:05:32.279 --> 00:05:35.000
to work with in order to make this happen. She

98
00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:37.759
had celebrated Christmas early with her son so she could

99
00:05:37.800 --> 00:05:40.199
make the long drive to Beaumont, Texas to see her

100
00:05:40.279 --> 00:05:43.439
husband Jerry on the big day. Fortunately, she had family

101
00:05:43.480 --> 00:05:45.879
whom she could stay with on Christmas Eve before she

102
00:05:45.920 --> 00:05:48.639
would complete the drive to the prison. The weather was

103
00:05:48.720 --> 00:05:50.720
rather gloomy as she prepared to hit the road for

104
00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:53.759
the adjacent state. She had carefully packed the essentials for

105
00:05:53.800 --> 00:05:55.800
the trip and was saddened at the thought of seeing

106
00:05:55.879 --> 00:05:59.360
Jerry without the ability of bringing him a gift. Holidays

107
00:05:59.360 --> 00:06:02.759
were so much different now than years past. The power

108
00:06:02.839 --> 00:06:05.879
and privilege enjoyed by his position was obviously now gone,

109
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:08.959
but Marianne too had held a position in high power

110
00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:11.920
in her own right. She was the assistant superintendent of

111
00:06:11.959 --> 00:06:15.759
Research and Development for the Louisiana Department of Education. To

112
00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:18.279
say she hadn't been humiliated by the whole scandal would

113
00:06:18.279 --> 00:06:20.720
be a total lie, but she continued to hold her

114
00:06:20.759 --> 00:06:22.879
head high and prayed for the day that this would

115
00:06:22.920 --> 00:06:26.040
all be in the rearview mirror. Until then, she needed

116
00:06:26.079 --> 00:06:28.879
to get to Texas. Marianne had made the strip enough

117
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:30.879
to know that she'd be hungry as she traveled, so

118
00:06:30.920 --> 00:06:33.360
she swung into a strip mall on Highway four fifteen

119
00:06:33.399 --> 00:06:36.040
that held a subway sandwich shop where she could get

120
00:06:36.040 --> 00:06:38.519
a bite to eat. This shop is right across the

121
00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:41.879
Mississippi River from Baton Rouge, slightly west of Port Allen.

122
00:06:42.639 --> 00:06:45.040
It was about five thirty pm and not very busy

123
00:06:45.040 --> 00:06:47.839
considering it was Christmas Eve, so the two ladies working

124
00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:50.000
in the store were happy to have a customer come in,

125
00:06:50.399 --> 00:06:54.079
especially one as kind as Mary Anne. She was beautiful too,

126
00:06:54.240 --> 00:06:56.680
a woman who kept herself up and had that air

127
00:06:56.720 --> 00:07:00.240
of wealth about her and her fashion choices. Welcome to say,

128
00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:01.959
The ladies greeted her as she walked in, and the

129
00:07:01.959 --> 00:07:05.199
bell on the door rang, signaling that someone had entered. Hello.

130
00:07:05.319 --> 00:07:08.000
She said she matched their energy and friendliness. As she

131
00:07:08.040 --> 00:07:11.199
approached the counter, she ordered her food and the women

132
00:07:11.240 --> 00:07:13.720
all struck up pleasant conversation as it was made and

133
00:07:13.759 --> 00:07:17.600
packaged to go. She paid, and the women exchanged goodbyes

134
00:07:17.639 --> 00:07:20.360
with the little extra holiday kindness towards each other. As

135
00:07:20.399 --> 00:07:22.279
Marianne made her way back out of the door and

136
00:07:22.319 --> 00:07:25.120
towards her car, it was almost closing time, and the

137
00:07:25.160 --> 00:07:27.879
workers were so ready to get home to their own families.

138
00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:30.920
They had to complete their closing duties before that could happen, though,

139
00:07:31.160 --> 00:07:33.800
so they buckled down to get it done. Sanna would

140
00:07:33.800 --> 00:07:36.680
be coming soon, and everyone had things to do before

141
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:39.920
he made it to Louisiana. After the register was counted

142
00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:42.480
and settled, the bread and veggies stored away, and the

143
00:07:42.519 --> 00:07:45.519
floor swept, it was time to leave. But the women

144
00:07:45.560 --> 00:07:48.040
were curious as to why the kind lady who came

145
00:07:48.079 --> 00:07:51.560
in earlier was still parked outside. Yeah, there was a

146
00:07:51.600 --> 00:07:54.279
casino nearby, but she wouldn't have left her vehicle at

147
00:07:54.279 --> 00:07:57.639
the subway if she had plans of going there. Curiosity

148
00:07:57.639 --> 00:07:59.720
got the better of the women, so they decided to

149
00:07:59.720 --> 00:08:02.240
go and make sure that mary Anne was okay. But

150
00:08:02.279 --> 00:08:04.879
as they rounded the vehicle to the driver's side, they

151
00:08:04.920 --> 00:08:08.519
came upon a site that caused immediate concern. The food

152
00:08:08.600 --> 00:08:11.319
they had just made, as well as the woman's purse

153
00:08:11.399 --> 00:08:13.560
was on the ground next to the car, and its

154
00:08:13.600 --> 00:08:17.800
contents were strown about. The woman. However, she wasn't nowhere

155
00:08:17.800 --> 00:08:21.600
to be found. What had happened? They noticed a truck

156
00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:24.879
leaving the scene, a burgundy one, but other than that,

157
00:08:25.399 --> 00:08:28.439
they hadn't seen anything else. They decided to make a

158
00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:32.039
call to nine one one, and the police responded. When

159
00:08:32.039 --> 00:08:34.759
they arrived, they found the food and the purse contents,

160
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.639
just as the women had described to the dispatcher, but

161
00:08:37.720 --> 00:08:41.559
the police also found more. Marianne was a well kept woman,

162
00:08:41.600 --> 00:08:44.519
as I mentioned before. An evidence of her being involved

163
00:08:44.519 --> 00:08:46.600
in a scuffle of some sort was there in her

164
00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:50.240
broken and scattered acrylic fingernails on the ground, ripped off

165
00:08:50.279 --> 00:08:53.279
as she fought an attacker, but robbery didn't seem the

166
00:08:53.320 --> 00:08:56.440
ultimate goal. The purse was believed to have been strown

167
00:08:56.480 --> 00:08:59.960
about during the scuffle, but inside her vehicle were present

168
00:09:00.200 --> 00:09:04.080
and other valuables, not to mention her car itself. Yes,

169
00:09:04.200 --> 00:09:07.279
Marianne was wearing expensive jewelry, but there was too much

170
00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:10.159
left behind to make this seem like a robbery. She

171
00:09:10.279 --> 00:09:12.840
was also sixty five years old. She could have been

172
00:09:12.919 --> 00:09:15.320
shoved down and everything taken if that was the goal,

173
00:09:15.799 --> 00:09:18.960
but the only thing missing was mary Anne. Because of this,

174
00:09:19.320 --> 00:09:22.279
police believed this was an abduction and mari Anne was

175
00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:25.679
likely in grave danger. But who would want to take

176
00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:29.159
her and for what reason? As police were busy confirming

177
00:09:29.159 --> 00:09:32.279
who the missing woman was Just thirty five minutes after

178
00:09:32.279 --> 00:09:34.879
the crime scene tape was up. A man was passing

179
00:09:34.879 --> 00:09:38.120
by with no clue as to what had happened. All

180
00:09:38.159 --> 00:09:40.279
he knew was he was sad that a family would

181
00:09:40.320 --> 00:09:43.399
be experiencing some sort of tragedy on Christmas. As the

182
00:09:43.440 --> 00:09:46.759
subway was surrounded by police and flashing lights. I hope

183
00:09:46.759 --> 00:09:50.440
everyone's okay, he thought, What is wrong with this world?

184
00:09:50.600 --> 00:09:52.840
That man who saw the police lights and shook his

185
00:09:52.879 --> 00:09:55.559
head as he drove home was none other than Marianne's

186
00:09:55.559 --> 00:09:58.519
own son, and he would soon learn that his family

187
00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:02.679
would be that family experiencing tragedy this Christmas. Police knew

188
00:10:02.759 --> 00:10:04.679
time was of the essence as they looked for any

189
00:10:04.679 --> 00:10:08.279
other possible leads to Marianne's abduction when they noticed surveillance

190
00:10:08.320 --> 00:10:12.159
cameras on the buildings nearby. There was a discount cigarette store,

191
00:10:12.440 --> 00:10:15.960
and their camera was unfortunately a very grainy one. It

192
00:10:16.080 --> 00:10:18.879
also scanned back and forth, which meant it didn't stay

193
00:10:18.879 --> 00:10:23.039
put in one location. Every fifty five seconds the camera

194
00:10:23.080 --> 00:10:25.879
would complete a scan of the parking lot. The view

195
00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:28.440
of the camera also had a hindrance of sorts, in

196
00:10:28.480 --> 00:10:30.919
that the awning of the building obscured the camera's view

197
00:10:30.960 --> 00:10:34.519
at certain points. What police were able to see were

198
00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:38.360
the last moments Marianne was seen alive, but only partially.

199
00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:42.360
The movement of the camera would capture Marianne walking to

200
00:10:42.399 --> 00:10:46.039
the parking lot and approaching her car. At that moment,

201
00:10:46.519 --> 00:10:48.960
only the lower half of a man would appear to

202
00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:51.559
approach her from behind, but it was obvious he was

203
00:10:51.600 --> 00:10:54.240
grabbing her in some way because the camera caught her

204
00:10:54.320 --> 00:10:58.279
dropping her food and struggling, But then it panned away.

205
00:10:59.159 --> 00:11:02.679
Fifty five seconds later, it was back at Marianne's car,

206
00:11:02.840 --> 00:11:05.000
but by this point all that could be seen was

207
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:08.279
the man from the chest down getting into a burgundy

208
00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:11.759
truck and driving away on Highway four fifteen until he

209
00:11:11.879 --> 00:11:15.799
was out of sight. Police were right this was an abduction,

210
00:11:16.080 --> 00:11:20.159
but the abductor's identification was just out of view that truck,

211
00:11:20.200 --> 00:11:24.200
though that would remain a lead. An additional lead was

212
00:11:24.200 --> 00:11:26.679
that tire tracks believed to be from the burgundy truck

213
00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:29.120
were located in the dirt and the mud on the

214
00:11:29.159 --> 00:11:32.519
way out of the parking lot. Other than these leads,

215
00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:35.919
there wasn't much else to go off of. Theories would

216
00:11:35.960 --> 00:11:39.360
swirl as to who abducted Marianne Fowler that night. Had

217
00:11:39.360 --> 00:11:42.000
her husband done dealings with the wrong people and they

218
00:11:42.080 --> 00:11:45.240
took her as revenge or leverage. Was she abducted by

219
00:11:45.360 --> 00:11:48.759
chance and a robbery gone wrong. The rumors were swirling,

220
00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:52.279
but the general consensus was that the Baton Rouge serial

221
00:11:52.360 --> 00:11:56.639
killer had likely struck again. After all, the FBI behavioral

222
00:11:56.679 --> 00:11:59.679
analyst said he would be taking larger risks, but this

223
00:11:59.879 --> 00:12:02.879
was to be caught. This was to keep the thrill,

224
00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:07.320
to keep his excitement alive. He had killed so much

225
00:12:07.399 --> 00:12:10.960
now that even murder was just too easy. Each time

226
00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.440
he killed, he would have to go a little further

227
00:12:13.559 --> 00:12:16.480
to get the same rush. Just like a drug addict

228
00:12:16.519 --> 00:12:18.759
who needs more and more to keep the high going,

229
00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:22.320
so does a man addicted to murder. When words spread

230
00:12:22.360 --> 00:12:24.919
that it was Marianne that had been abducted, her family

231
00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:28.399
was crushed. With such little information to go on, they

232
00:12:28.399 --> 00:12:30.679
felt like they were at the mercy of investigators who

233
00:12:30.720 --> 00:12:33.480
were doing everything they could to find her. As the

234
00:12:33.559 --> 00:12:37.000
days passed, Derek Todd Lee enjoyed Christmas with his family.

235
00:12:37.480 --> 00:12:39.960
He ate supper with his kids, and enjoyed time with

236
00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:43.840
his friends. All the while Marianne's family was desperate to

237
00:12:43.879 --> 00:12:47.519
find her. Her husband's attorneys even requested a furlough from

238
00:12:47.519 --> 00:12:49.960
prison so he could assist in the search for his wife,

239
00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:52.679
but that would never happen. He would sit in prison

240
00:12:52.879 --> 00:12:56.799
as everyone else continued the search. Something that was striking

241
00:12:56.840 --> 00:12:59.360
to so many people as her case became a headline

242
00:12:59.720 --> 00:13:02.840
was how how similar she looked to Pam Kennimore's mother.

243
00:13:03.399 --> 00:13:07.639
When I say similar, it's uncanny and to locals at least,

244
00:13:08.039 --> 00:13:11.080
this got some minds turning. See after the deaths of

245
00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:14.840
Pam and Murray, both of their mothers became extremely vocal,

246
00:13:14.919 --> 00:13:18.840
with Lynn Marino taking charge. Lynn was Pam's mother, and

247
00:13:18.919 --> 00:13:22.000
she was an absolute force to be reckoned with. She

248
00:13:22.159 --> 00:13:25.879
led rallies, met with lawmakers, and even gave interviews with

249
00:13:25.960 --> 00:13:29.399
the largest of news outlets, including the National News anchor

250
00:13:29.440 --> 00:13:32.759
Connie Chong. Lynn Marino was on a mission to solve

251
00:13:32.759 --> 00:13:35.519
her daughter's murder, and it was no doubt she had

252
00:13:35.639 --> 00:13:39.759
likely gotten his attention. Based on transcripts, here's a portion

253
00:13:39.919 --> 00:13:43.480
of an interview Pam Kennimore's mother gave on July thirty first,

254
00:13:43.720 --> 00:13:46.720
two thousand and two, with Connie Chong. The interview began

255
00:13:46.799 --> 00:13:49.639
with a reporter noting police aren't sure who the suspect

256
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:52.080
is or where he might be, but they say there's

257
00:13:52.159 --> 00:13:55.120
DNA evidence linking the same man to the three murders.

258
00:13:55.559 --> 00:13:59.399
Investigators haven't discovered any connection between the three victims. They

259
00:13:59.399 --> 00:14:01.759
didn't know each each other, and that's also led more

260
00:14:01.799 --> 00:14:04.960
people to speculate about who or what the killer is

261
00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:08.799
looking for. They broke into a video clip from Corporal

262
00:14:08.840 --> 00:14:11.360
Don Kelly from the Batonige Police Department, and he was

263
00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:14.279
quoted as saying, I don't think the city is paralyzed.

264
00:14:14.519 --> 00:14:17.080
People are going about their lives. They're going to work.

265
00:14:17.519 --> 00:14:20.679
You know, very few people, I think have probably significantly

266
00:14:20.720 --> 00:14:23.399
altered their routine. But I think it's fair to say that,

267
00:14:23.480 --> 00:14:26.960
particularly among young women and those who live alone, there

268
00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:30.320
is definite apprehension they're very much aware of this. And

269
00:14:30.360 --> 00:14:32.639
that's a good thing right now. That works to our

270
00:14:32.639 --> 00:14:35.679
advantage and against the killer, because we want women to

271
00:14:35.720 --> 00:14:38.679
be aware, we want them to be suspicious, we want

272
00:14:38.720 --> 00:14:41.799
them to challenge anything that doesn't look right or makes

273
00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:45.000
them feel uncomfortable, So that's not necessarily a bad thing

274
00:14:45.240 --> 00:14:49.480
right now. The reporter picks up with Connie Chung, asking

275
00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:52.200
do authorities have any reason to believe that this killer

276
00:14:52.200 --> 00:14:54.679
has killed before, that there are any other murders that

277
00:14:54.720 --> 00:14:58.519
he's committed, And the reporter responded, well, they're not closing

278
00:14:58.559 --> 00:15:01.159
the door to that possibility. They want to look into

279
00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:03.840
that as well. So what they've done is there are

280
00:15:03.840 --> 00:15:07.679
about thirty five unsolved murder cases involving women here in

281
00:15:07.720 --> 00:15:11.440
the Baton Rouge area. They're going back doing DNA testing

282
00:15:11.440 --> 00:15:14.039
through all of those cases, comparing notes on all of

283
00:15:14.039 --> 00:15:16.799
those cases, and making sure there aren't any more links

284
00:15:16.799 --> 00:15:20.679
between these three confirmed cases and any of those thirty five.

285
00:15:21.120 --> 00:15:24.960
At this point, Connie Chong acknowledges Lynn Marino and says, Lynn,

286
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:27.159
let's start with you. I'd love for you to tell

287
00:15:27.159 --> 00:15:31.000
me about Pam. I show she was forty four years old, married,

288
00:15:31.080 --> 00:15:33.679
and she was blessed with an adopted son. Tell me

289
00:15:33.720 --> 00:15:37.840
more about her, and this is where Lynn Marino picks up. Well,

290
00:15:38.200 --> 00:15:42.559
Pam was very vivacious. Pam loved life, Pam loved people.

291
00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:45.639
I often say Pam's been a businesswoman since she was ten.

292
00:15:46.080 --> 00:15:49.360
She loved to do everything. She was talented. If you

293
00:15:49.480 --> 00:15:52.679
met Pam once for five minutes, you never forgot her.

294
00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:56.200
She was just that kind of individual. She had outer beauty,

295
00:15:56.360 --> 00:15:58.639
but she had an inward beauty that was reflected in

296
00:15:58.720 --> 00:16:02.000
everything she did, in every interaction she had with people.

297
00:16:02.519 --> 00:16:05.120
And it's just been a terrible loss for us, and

298
00:16:05.159 --> 00:16:07.279
that's why we've gotten on this campaign to try to

299
00:16:07.279 --> 00:16:11.320
find the person who is responsible for this. Chung responded, Yes, indeed,

300
00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:14.080
you have you and other mothers. Let's go to Anne

301
00:16:14.159 --> 00:16:16.919
Pace now and tell me about your daughter. I know

302
00:16:17.039 --> 00:16:20.120
she was very smart and was only twenty two. Anne

303
00:16:20.159 --> 00:16:23.120
Pace picks up, Yes, she was. Indeed. She always made

304
00:16:23.159 --> 00:16:25.559
me laugh and she could laugh at herself, and she

305
00:16:25.679 --> 00:16:28.120
was very smart. She was only twenty two and had

306
00:16:28.120 --> 00:16:30.799
managed to finish a four year undergraduate degree and a

307
00:16:30.840 --> 00:16:34.399
two year graduate degree. She left chocolate and Chick fil A.

308
00:16:34.879 --> 00:16:37.519
She had a pair of fuzzy leopard print boots. She

309
00:16:37.639 --> 00:16:40.440
loved to have a good time. She could run six miles.

310
00:16:40.440 --> 00:16:43.480
She was so young and so promising, And I think

311
00:16:43.519 --> 00:16:46.279
her greatest gift was that she made wonderful and cherished

312
00:16:46.279 --> 00:16:49.759
friends and was a wonderful and cherished friend herself. And

313
00:16:49.840 --> 00:16:53.000
like Gina and Pam, she was loved by all of us.

314
00:16:53.519 --> 00:16:56.440
Murray was my youngest child, my baby girl. And they've

315
00:16:56.519 --> 00:17:01.080
left terrible empty spaces in three families. Chung added, yes,

316
00:17:01.159 --> 00:17:03.320
I know you called her murray and everybody else. Did

317
00:17:03.679 --> 00:17:06.160
you've really taken a lead here? You and the other mothers.

318
00:17:06.400 --> 00:17:09.480
You're trying to find common links between these three murdered women,

319
00:17:09.599 --> 00:17:12.680
such as what what are you looking for? And and

320
00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:15.440
Pace piped up, Well, all of us have looked for

321
00:17:15.480 --> 00:17:19.559
an activity or a hairdresser, a gymnasium, maybe a restaurant,

322
00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:23.440
anything in common, these common interests. We've tried to explore

323
00:17:23.480 --> 00:17:26.680
all of these things. So far, Cheng asked her, have

324
00:17:26.839 --> 00:17:29.480
you come up with anything. No, we have not been

325
00:17:29.519 --> 00:17:32.240
successful so far, and I don't know how the others feel.

326
00:17:32.480 --> 00:17:34.880
But what I fear is that the parameters that this

327
00:17:34.960 --> 00:17:38.359
individual uses to select victims are a product of an

328
00:17:38.480 --> 00:17:41.599
irrational mind, and I don't know if they're accessible to us.

329
00:17:42.160 --> 00:17:45.319
Chung then went to Lynn Marino and asks what she thought,

330
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:48.920
and Marino answered, no, we thought about church, and that's

331
00:17:48.920 --> 00:17:51.319
why we're trying to get together with the other families

332
00:17:51.480 --> 00:17:53.200
so that we could have a little session where we

333
00:17:53.200 --> 00:17:56.640
could exchange ideas. So far, the only thing I know

334
00:17:56.839 --> 00:17:58.759
is she rode her bike once or twice by the

335
00:17:58.799 --> 00:18:01.640
lake with her son. The other victims were around the lake,

336
00:18:01.880 --> 00:18:04.039
But I mean, you know, that's a shot in the dark.

337
00:18:04.440 --> 00:18:07.920
Cheng asks, Now, this person, this killer apparently was able

338
00:18:07.960 --> 00:18:09.920
to get into the homes of every woman and there

339
00:18:09.960 --> 00:18:12.519
was no forced entry. Does it sound like your daughter

340
00:18:12.519 --> 00:18:15.119
would have let a stranger into her home? And Lynn

341
00:18:15.119 --> 00:18:17.759
Marino said, no, Connie. The more I think about it,

342
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:20.000
I think this is a person that these women have

343
00:18:20.079 --> 00:18:23.960
seen that's charming, friendly, and they feel comfortable with. Now

344
00:18:23.960 --> 00:18:26.400
that's just my theory, and I think he must use

345
00:18:26.400 --> 00:18:30.279
some sort of ploy. He's broken down, he's hurt himself, whatever,

346
00:18:30.440 --> 00:18:33.359
and he wins their confidence. I mean, one of these girls,

347
00:18:33.480 --> 00:18:36.680
they said had taken self defense. She was strong. One

348
00:18:36.720 --> 00:18:39.720
girl fought him, and you know they all had burglar alarms.

349
00:18:39.920 --> 00:18:42.440
Why does this guy fool these women like this? I mean,

350
00:18:42.640 --> 00:18:45.839
you know, we don't know. We're all speculating. That's one

351
00:18:45.880 --> 00:18:48.400
of the reasons we've launched this campaign to arouse public

352
00:18:48.400 --> 00:18:51.240
awareness of what is going on. I really think if

353
00:18:51.240 --> 00:18:53.559
Pam had known the danger in Baton Rouge, she would

354
00:18:53.559 --> 00:18:56.640
have been a lot more careful than she was. And Pace,

355
00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.839
are the police coordinating with your mothers? And Pace said,

356
00:19:00.039 --> 00:19:03.160
I don't hear from the police. Chung said, really, they've

357
00:19:03.160 --> 00:19:06.319
been very tight lipped, haven't they. And and Pace responded,

358
00:19:06.480 --> 00:19:09.440
they've been very cautious. I understand that, and I know

359
00:19:09.480 --> 00:19:12.400
that it's an ongoing investigation, but it's frustrating not to

360
00:19:12.480 --> 00:19:15.720
know more. And I, in fact, I myself learned of

361
00:19:15.720 --> 00:19:18.880
the connection with Pam Kinnemore and Gina and Murray through

362
00:19:18.920 --> 00:19:22.359
Melissa Moore, who is a reporter with the Advocate newspaper

363
00:19:22.359 --> 00:19:24.680
in Baton Rouge. And I was not called by the

364
00:19:24.680 --> 00:19:28.000
police about that at all. Connie Chung said, that must

365
00:19:28.079 --> 00:19:31.319
be so difficult for you because you're so proactive as well.

366
00:19:31.599 --> 00:19:33.599
Do you think the fact that police have linked these

367
00:19:33.599 --> 00:19:36.519
three killings will help actually solve the murders? And and

368
00:19:36.599 --> 00:19:39.920
Pace responded, I myself think that it must be the case,

369
00:19:40.119 --> 00:19:44.559
because I think each time information accumulates, evidence accumulates, and

370
00:19:44.640 --> 00:19:48.319
eventually I pray, perhaps through broadcasts such as this, that

371
00:19:48.400 --> 00:19:51.279
something will click with someone, something will add up in

372
00:19:51.319 --> 00:19:55.160
somebody's head, and they'll come forward and this will be solved.

373
00:19:55.400 --> 00:19:58.119
It was interviews such as this that kept Lynn Marino

374
00:19:58.200 --> 00:20:02.440
in the spotlight on television. She wanted her daughter's murder solved.

375
00:20:02.680 --> 00:20:06.319
She was everywhere, But was it possible that the killer

376
00:20:06.400 --> 00:20:09.799
saw mary Anne and mistook her for Lynn Marino? It

377
00:20:09.839 --> 00:20:13.680
could be far fetched, but man they looked alike. Had

378
00:20:13.720 --> 00:20:16.680
he possibly abducted her to exact revenge for all of

379
00:20:16.720 --> 00:20:19.400
the spotlight she was placing on him, even though no

380
00:20:19.400 --> 00:20:22.480
one knew who he was or was Marianne simply a

381
00:20:22.559 --> 00:20:26.400
victim of convenience and opportunity. There's no real answer to this,

382
00:20:26.680 --> 00:20:30.519
as mary Anne Fowler's body has never been recovered, her

383
00:20:30.559 --> 00:20:34.119
final resting place remains unknown, and who took her remains

384
00:20:34.160 --> 00:20:38.000
a scientific mystery. The fingernails found that the scene were

385
00:20:38.039 --> 00:20:40.599
sent to a lab for testing, but sadly they would

386
00:20:40.640 --> 00:20:44.599
hold no genetic material of her abductor. Still today, her

387
00:20:44.640 --> 00:20:48.279
abduction remains open, although she was declared legally dead in

388
00:20:48.279 --> 00:20:51.440
two thousand and four. But while Derek Toddley has never

389
00:20:51.519 --> 00:20:55.839
been officially linked to her abduction, there's information that, considering

390
00:20:55.839 --> 00:20:59.680
the totality of circumstances surrounding mary Anne Fowler's disappearance, we

391
00:20:59.759 --> 00:21:03.200
say can't ignore this information wouldn't come to light for

392
00:21:03.240 --> 00:21:05.119
a few more years. But I have the luxury of

393
00:21:05.160 --> 00:21:07.480
filling you in now, so you can make your own

394
00:21:07.519 --> 00:21:11.759
decision on who you think her abductor was. Derek Toddley

395
00:21:11.880 --> 00:21:14.599
was using his cell phone the very evening that Mary

396
00:21:14.599 --> 00:21:18.359
Anne Fowler went missing and guess where he was? At

397
00:21:18.400 --> 00:21:22.000
five twenty pm on Christmas Eve of two thousand and two,

398
00:21:22.519 --> 00:21:26.839
he was in Port Allen, Louisiana, but also later that

399
00:21:26.920 --> 00:21:29.960
same night, around eleven twenty pm on Christmas Eve, his

400
00:21:30.079 --> 00:21:33.359
phone records would place him in Saint Gabriel, right near

401
00:21:33.400 --> 00:21:37.119
the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Christine Moore's body was found

402
00:21:37.160 --> 00:21:41.759
prior interesting to say the least. That said, guess where

403
00:21:41.799 --> 00:21:45.240
he wasn't He wasn't at home and there was no

404
00:21:45.279 --> 00:21:47.880
one who could vouch for his whereabouts. That night, his

405
00:21:48.039 --> 00:21:50.880
wife would go to bed without him, only to awaken

406
00:21:50.960 --> 00:21:53.440
in the early hours of Christmas morning to find him

407
00:21:53.480 --> 00:21:57.960
asleep in the bed. I don't believe in coincidences. Experience

408
00:21:57.960 --> 00:22:01.519
has taught me that they aren't likely, and evidence, while circumstantial,

409
00:22:01.680 --> 00:22:05.119
tells me everything I need to know. Oh yeah, and

410
00:22:05.160 --> 00:22:08.519
by the way, Derek Toddlee was also driving a Burgundy

411
00:22:08.559 --> 00:22:12.039
truck that night. The area of ground has been searched

412
00:22:12.119 --> 00:22:15.519
extensively for her remains. Around Ebenezer Church, but as you know,

413
00:22:16.039 --> 00:22:19.319
she was never found. While no one will ever likely

414
00:22:19.400 --> 00:22:23.079
know exactly what happened to Marianne Fowler, just three months later,

415
00:22:23.480 --> 00:22:27.039
another unsuspecting woman would become a headline as her body

416
00:22:27.200 --> 00:22:30.519
was recovered yet again near the Whiskey Bay exit
