The Bad Wife : Kelly Gissendaner

The Bad Wife : Kelly Gissendaner

In February 1997, 30-year-old Douglas Gissendaner left a friend’s house after working on cars and drove home to the house he shared with his wife, Kelly, in Auburn, Georgia. He never made it back alive. What looked at first like a robbery gone wrong in a remote wooded area of Gwinnett County was anything but random. Douglas was forced at knifepoint into his own car, driven deep into the woods near Harbins Park, ordered to his knees, beaten with a nightstick, and stabbed repeatedly in the neck. His watch and wedding ring were taken to stage a robbery.

His body was left for animals to find. The real architect of the crime was not the man who wielded the knife—Gregory Owen, Kelly’s lover—but Kelly herself. She had planned the murder for months, rejected divorce as an option because she believed Douglas would “never leave her alone,” and wanted the house and the life insurance money. On the night of the killing she drove Owen to the house, handed him a nightstick and a hunting knife, then went out dancing with friends to create her alibi. She later returned to the scene as the murder was being carried out.

00:00:06.120 --> 00:00:09.119
Welcome to Unspeakable, a true crime podcast. Or I tell

2
00:00:09.160 --> 00:00:12.480
stories of real crimes with real victims, whose cases are

3
00:00:12.519 --> 00:00:15.119
so shocking that many are left wondering how is this

4
00:00:15.199 --> 00:00:24.920
even real? I use my experiences in law enforcement corrections,

5
00:00:25.239 --> 00:00:28.039
and combined with my years as a criminal justice educator,

6
00:00:28.160 --> 00:00:31.719
dig deep into complex cases of evil acts, some so

7
00:00:31.920 --> 00:00:52.679
evil many feel they are unspeakable. Warning Unspeakable as intended

8
00:00:52.719 --> 00:00:55.719
for mature audiences. If you are easily offended, then I'm

9
00:00:55.719 --> 00:00:59.200
not your girl. Listening discretion is advised. Hey, y'all, it's

10
00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:01.719
kJ You're back with another episode of Unspeakable. How's your

11
00:01:01.719 --> 00:01:03.479
week go? And you know I'm gonna ask you that

12
00:01:04.040 --> 00:01:06.840
I can tell you this. It's so damn hot outside.

13
00:01:06.879 --> 00:01:10.040
I have just been walking around mad and thirsty all

14
00:01:10.120 --> 00:01:12.200
damn day. I don't know about you, but I can't

15
00:01:12.200 --> 00:01:14.879
catch your break. I need football season. I need a

16
00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:18.560
big cold icy and a good deep tissue massage before

17
00:01:18.599 --> 00:01:20.760
I just get into a bad attitude. Can I get

18
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:22.799
a n ame in for that someone out there? I'm

19
00:01:23.560 --> 00:01:26.879
just tired of being hot. But it's Wednesday, We're halfway

20
00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:29.879
through the week, and you're gonna get a banging episode.

21
00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:32.079
And so I want to jump right into it, and

22
00:01:32.120 --> 00:01:35.359
we're gonna head to the great state of Georgia, and

23
00:01:35.439 --> 00:01:38.719
this is where a little peach named Kelly lived. I

24
00:01:38.760 --> 00:01:41.079
know it's a great name, right, you love it? Well.

25
00:01:41.159 --> 00:01:44.799
Kelly was born in Georgia and her early years weren't

26
00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:47.959
the greatest. So things that you would expect whenever I

27
00:01:48.040 --> 00:01:50.760
follow up with that sentence, things like poverty was a

28
00:01:50.799 --> 00:01:54.680
consistent issue. And with that came the unfortunate common instance

29
00:01:55.040 --> 00:01:58.560
of abuse. And that abuse was in multiple forms, not

30
00:01:58.719 --> 00:02:08.360
just one Kelly. He was a subject to boomshit. Kelly

31
00:02:08.479 --> 00:02:12.840
was subjected to physical abuse, mental abuse, as well as

32
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:17.120
sexual abuse as a little girl. And according to sworn affidavits,

33
00:02:17.159 --> 00:02:18.919
which I did not read myself, I want to be

34
00:02:18.960 --> 00:02:22.439
clear on this, but they were reasonably sourced, she had

35
00:02:22.479 --> 00:02:28.039
been molested by multiple men throughout her youth. Her father

36
00:02:28.199 --> 00:02:30.439
and her mother had divorced whenever she was really young,

37
00:02:30.840 --> 00:02:34.840
but her mom amazingly met and married a new man

38
00:02:35.080 --> 00:02:40.080
just eight days after her divorce. So I'm sure that

39
00:02:40.199 --> 00:02:42.840
her picking skills were good and she was just making

40
00:02:42.879 --> 00:02:46.080
good decisions for old Kelly girl. And as the story goes,

41
00:02:46.599 --> 00:02:50.439
as you can probably imagine, Kelly was then molested by

42
00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:54.520
her now stepfather when she turned about ten years old.

43
00:02:54.919 --> 00:02:57.800
So his whole shtick on this was he complained that

44
00:02:57.840 --> 00:02:59.599
they had gotten a new mattress and he said that

45
00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:02.000
it was on comfortable, and so he would go and

46
00:03:02.039 --> 00:03:04.400
sleep in Kelly's bed with her. This went on for

47
00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:08.159
about six months, under the guys that her mattress leg

48
00:03:08.199 --> 00:03:10.120
didn't hurt his back and it was more comfortable, and

49
00:03:10.159 --> 00:03:12.560
this was obviously a ploy to have access to the

50
00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:15.960
child without raising any eyebrows. And on top of that,

51
00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:21.280
the adults in the home fought constantly in front of Kelly.

52
00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:25.800
There was just chaos and this just never ending cycle

53
00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:31.240
of abuse and misery and dysfunction underneath that roof. By

54
00:03:31.280 --> 00:03:33.719
the time that she was in high school, she did

55
00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:37.439
secretly dream of a way out to get far away

56
00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:39.520
from this life that she was in and to go

57
00:03:39.560 --> 00:03:42.360
and create a life of her own, but those dreams

58
00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:46.879
were kept quiet as her days in school weren't much

59
00:03:46.919 --> 00:03:51.120
fun either. According to Kelly, she wasn't the most popular kid,

60
00:03:51.159 --> 00:03:53.879
as you can imagine, facing what she's already facing. She

61
00:03:54.039 --> 00:03:58.240
was bullied, she wore glasses, she was picked on because

62
00:03:58.319 --> 00:04:01.639
her clothes were old and and they just hand me

63
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:03.599
downs were common. She didn't have the cool gear to

64
00:04:03.680 --> 00:04:06.840
wear to school. And then when her senior year rolled around,

65
00:04:07.240 --> 00:04:10.879
there were mumblings that Kelly might be pregnant. It wasn't

66
00:04:10.960 --> 00:04:13.840
until she was about six months long that she couldn't

67
00:04:13.879 --> 00:04:17.800
hide it anymore, and all of those rumors seemed to

68
00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:20.480
be true. So when the other students found out about

69
00:04:20.480 --> 00:04:23.439
it for sure, that was whenever the laughing and the

70
00:04:23.480 --> 00:04:27.600
bullying only intensified. Not to mention that she would never

71
00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:32.600
say who the baby's dad was. Now. One report claimed

72
00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:37.120
that she was date raped and so that's why she

73
00:04:37.160 --> 00:04:40.040
didn't share who the baby's father was, but another report

74
00:04:40.160 --> 00:04:44.040
said she just didn't want anyone to know who the

75
00:04:44.120 --> 00:04:47.160
father was, while yet another one that I read said

76
00:04:47.560 --> 00:04:51.439
that it was either another student or a guy that

77
00:04:51.519 --> 00:04:54.079
she knew. So I don't know the answer of who

78
00:04:54.079 --> 00:04:57.639
her baby daddy was, but my guess in this situation

79
00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:00.639
is that she probably wasn't sure. She she probably did

80
00:05:00.639 --> 00:05:03.319
not know. Again, I can't stand on that, but it

81
00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:06.279
just seems to be what the situation was. But with

82
00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:09.360
all of that and facing everything that she had to date,

83
00:05:09.480 --> 00:05:12.439
Kelly would graduate from high school, which was a huge

84
00:05:12.480 --> 00:05:15.800
win for her, and then just two weeks after graduation

85
00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:20.079
in nineteen eighty six, she gave birth to that first baby,

86
00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:23.959
a baby boy that she would name Brandon. Now, obviously

87
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:26.680
it goes without saying the dad wasn't involved, because we

88
00:05:26.680 --> 00:05:29.120
don't even know who the dad was. So Kelly continued

89
00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:31.879
to live at home with her mom, and with that,

90
00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:35.680
even though the huge accomplishment of high school graduation, it

91
00:05:35.759 --> 00:05:39.040
kind of just went thud from there because she was

92
00:05:39.079 --> 00:05:42.120
a single mom. She's living in an impoverished home, she

93
00:05:42.199 --> 00:05:45.160
was struggling not only to work but to make money,

94
00:05:45.560 --> 00:05:49.800
and then no real means for outside care for the

95
00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:55.199
baby made that even more complicated. She did, however, start

96
00:05:55.279 --> 00:05:58.600
dating a classmate of hers, and his name was Jeff Banks,

97
00:05:58.600 --> 00:06:01.720
who very soon after that they started dating, asked her

98
00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:04.560
to marry him, which they did just a few months

99
00:06:04.600 --> 00:06:08.279
after that, but the marriage would only last about six months.

100
00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:14.079
And when Kelly's dad, whom she had somewhat rekindled her

101
00:06:14.120 --> 00:06:17.360
own relationship with, because remember her parents divorced when she

102
00:06:17.399 --> 00:06:19.600
was very young and he never really came around at

103
00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:23.560
that point from that point forward, but she had rekindled

104
00:06:23.600 --> 00:06:27.240
a relationship with her bio dad, and that relationship with

105
00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:30.319
this new husband she had was cut really short whenever

106
00:06:30.560 --> 00:06:34.879
allegedly her dad went after Jeff with a shotgun because

107
00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:38.560
he didn't pass bread at dinner. Okay, there was a

108
00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:42.879
big uproar about bread. So it was over. That relationship

109
00:06:42.879 --> 00:06:45.399
in that marriage went coudput and that was the end

110
00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:48.199
of that. So Kelly moved back home. She was now

111
00:06:48.319 --> 00:06:54.160
nineteen years old, and she wasn't really thriving. She was broke, single,

112
00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:58.279
and she wasn't going anywhere fast. But in March of

113
00:06:58.360 --> 00:07:02.759
nineteen eighty nine, Kelly's life would take an unexpected turn

114
00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:07.439
for the better. Through a chance meeting with friends, Kelly

115
00:07:07.600 --> 00:07:10.920
would be introduced to a guy named Doug, and Doug

116
00:07:11.800 --> 00:07:16.160
was different than anyone that Kelly had ever met. Let's

117
00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:19.160
start with the fact that he was so nice. It

118
00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:21.600
made me think of that song that's popular right now,

119
00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:25.000
because I like it when you're nice, like it when

120
00:07:25.399 --> 00:07:28.319
nice to me. You know that song Stella Lefty or

121
00:07:28.360 --> 00:07:31.000
something like that sings it. He was just so nice.

122
00:07:31.600 --> 00:07:34.399
She was used to being surrounded by people that weren't nice,

123
00:07:34.439 --> 00:07:36.600
and that we're always yelling and fighting and carrying on,

124
00:07:36.720 --> 00:07:39.040
and he just had this air of calm about him.

125
00:07:39.319 --> 00:07:43.319
He also came from a good family and he had values.

126
00:07:43.399 --> 00:07:47.120
He had morals and values along with the fact that

127
00:07:47.160 --> 00:07:50.920
he also had goals for himself. He had aspirations. He

128
00:07:50.959 --> 00:07:54.000
worked as a mechanic, He was a hard worker, and

129
00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:58.959
he had a plan for himself. Handsome and tall were

130
00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:03.000
also two things to add that check check on that list. Right,

131
00:08:03.319 --> 00:08:06.480
he was a tall, handsome dude. And considering that Kelly

132
00:08:06.600 --> 00:08:09.879
was six feet tall herself, she was a big girl.

133
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:13.439
This was awesome. She had a guy taller than her

134
00:08:13.800 --> 00:08:17.680
and he was nice and smart and driven. Another thing

135
00:08:17.800 --> 00:08:19.240
like he almost sounds too good to be true, but

136
00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:23.199
he also didn't drink and he didn't do drugs. His

137
00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:31.040
favorite commitment was church. Yeah, he went to church a lot. Well.

138
00:08:31.160 --> 00:08:36.200
Doug was very smitten, very fast with Kelly, And like

139
00:08:36.279 --> 00:08:39.559
something out of a fairy tale was the fact that

140
00:08:39.720 --> 00:08:43.159
Kelly's baby boy that she had had already took to

141
00:08:43.320 --> 00:08:47.000
Doug just as quickly as Doug took to him. Little

142
00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:52.399
Brandon became Doug's number one pal right from the start.

143
00:08:52.759 --> 00:08:56.279
He loved toting that boy around, being the father figure

144
00:08:56.360 --> 00:08:59.200
that that baby needed. And no mind that he wasn't

145
00:08:59.240 --> 00:09:03.720
biologically his child. If you asked, Doug, Brandon was his

146
00:09:03.840 --> 00:09:07.919
boy from day one, and everyone could see it, the

147
00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:12.240
love for both mom and son. It was real and

148
00:09:12.320 --> 00:09:16.480
it was genuine. And Douve also brought about good changes

149
00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:19.519
in Kelly's life, and one of those being church. That

150
00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:22.120
became something that was now a new routine for her.

151
00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:26.080
She would go in every Wednesday and every Sunday. That

152
00:09:26.279 --> 00:09:29.159
was their routine. They would go in, they would be

153
00:09:29.200 --> 00:09:32.480
in the pew, listening to the Word and growing in

154
00:09:32.600 --> 00:09:36.519
faith together. For God so loved the world that he

155
00:09:36.840 --> 00:09:40.000
gave his only son, and in the same breath did

156
00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:43.279
Doug so love Kelly's only son that he was willing

157
00:09:43.320 --> 00:09:47.080
to give her his entire world. So when Doug asked

158
00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:51.639
her to marry him, it was a no brainer. Absolutely yes,

159
00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:55.320
Oh my gosh, Yes, the wedding bells would ring and

160
00:09:55.399 --> 00:09:59.360
love would be celebrated. Not only had Doug found his soulmate,

161
00:10:00.080 --> 00:10:04.679
but the man would now become Brandon's official dad. He

162
00:10:04.759 --> 00:10:08.240
had a son, and as you can probably guess, two

163
00:10:08.279 --> 00:10:12.039
pink lines showed up very soon, and Doug was now

164
00:10:12.120 --> 00:10:15.919
even more thrilled. He was ecstatic. He was over the

165
00:10:15.960 --> 00:10:18.600
moon when he found out that he was now gonna

166
00:10:18.600 --> 00:10:22.360
have a biological child. He swept Brandon up in his arms.

167
00:10:22.399 --> 00:10:25.200
He hugged that little boy tight. Did you hear that, Bubba?

168
00:10:25.279 --> 00:10:27.320
You're gonna be a big brother and I'm gonna be

169
00:10:27.360 --> 00:10:31.919
a daddy again. This is great. Times could not have

170
00:10:32.039 --> 00:10:36.240
been any more exciting. It was August of nineteen ninety

171
00:10:36.559 --> 00:10:39.039
when their daughter, Kayla was born, and they had settled

172
00:10:39.080 --> 00:10:43.120
into a home in the Atlanta suburb of Beauford. Originally

173
00:10:43.600 --> 00:10:47.759
that area had served as the railway line between Atlanta

174
00:10:47.919 --> 00:10:52.559
and Charlotte, North Carolina, but now it was a growing city,

175
00:10:52.840 --> 00:10:55.840
and as the kids grew, you would be hard pressed

176
00:10:56.200 --> 00:10:59.600
to know which kid was Doug's bio kid and which

177
00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:03.360
one was because he loved those children equally, and he

178
00:11:03.399 --> 00:11:07.080
loved them both with a fierceness. The kids both also

179
00:11:07.159 --> 00:11:12.480
knew him as daddy. There was no difference. Brandon knew

180
00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:14.600
no other man in his life that would be the

181
00:11:14.639 --> 00:11:18.279
father figure. He was always there to tuck them and

182
00:11:18.320 --> 00:11:21.000
at night. He woke them up in the morning, and

183
00:11:21.080 --> 00:11:24.200
he gave them kisses and hugs before he left for work.

184
00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:27.320
If they had a special event, he was there. No

185
00:11:27.519 --> 00:11:31.480
questions asked, but in nineteen ninety one, there would be

186
00:11:31.519 --> 00:11:33.799
a new stress that would be added to the marriage,

187
00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:36.200
and that was the fact that Doug lost his job.

188
00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:39.080
Now Doug was the primary breadwinner of the home, so

189
00:11:39.320 --> 00:11:42.720
this was a huge blow to the family. Things had

190
00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:46.480
gotten so bad financially that they had to sell their home,

191
00:11:46.559 --> 00:11:49.039
and from what I understand, they may have even moved

192
00:11:49.080 --> 00:11:52.840
in with Kelly's mom for a short period, if I

193
00:11:52.840 --> 00:11:56.240
remember that correctly. But Doug was a man's man, and

194
00:11:56.320 --> 00:11:59.000
he knew, all right, I got to pull myself up

195
00:11:59.000 --> 00:12:01.360
by the bootstraps, make some changes here, and I may

196
00:12:01.360 --> 00:12:03.960
have to sacrifice, But he was going to do what

197
00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:06.600
he had to do for his little family, and in

198
00:12:06.639 --> 00:12:09.519
this case, he decided that he was going to join

199
00:12:09.720 --> 00:12:12.200
the army. Now, why why would he run off and

200
00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:14.360
join the army while you know he's got a family

201
00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:18.080
at home. Well, it's because the steady income and the

202
00:12:18.120 --> 00:12:21.919
benefits that would the army would provide him is exactly

203
00:12:22.639 --> 00:12:24.639
the stability that he would be able to pass on

204
00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:27.720
and give his wife and his kids. The trade in

205
00:12:27.799 --> 00:12:30.759
his mind, was worth his time away from his family

206
00:12:30.840 --> 00:12:34.120
so long as they were taken care of. So shortly

207
00:12:34.159 --> 00:12:37.080
after he joined the army, he got the news that

208
00:12:37.120 --> 00:12:39.919
he was going to be shipped off to Germany, halfway

209
00:12:39.960 --> 00:12:43.799
around the world. Oh man, right, so far? Why did

210
00:12:43.799 --> 00:12:46.360
they have to send you so far away? But he

211
00:12:46.440 --> 00:12:47.799
had to do what he had to do, and he

212
00:12:47.919 --> 00:12:51.480
was committed to doing that. But on the bright side,

213
00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.320
he fit in really well with army life. His fellow

214
00:12:56.440 --> 00:13:00.759
soldiers liked him, his supervisors gave their out of approval

215
00:13:00.799 --> 00:13:04.080
to him, and so he was just really succeeding and

216
00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:07.279
he was doing well. A month after he was stationed

217
00:13:07.279 --> 00:13:10.639
in Germany, Kelly and the kids followed suit because they

218
00:13:10.679 --> 00:13:13.080
didn't want to be apart from him that long, and

219
00:13:13.399 --> 00:13:15.399
even if that meant they had to travel halfway around

220
00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:18.000
the world, Kelly still wanted to be close to her husband.

221
00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:22.159
So Doug was consistent in the fact that he would

222
00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:24.399
make his money and then give his earnings to Kelly

223
00:13:24.440 --> 00:13:27.840
for her and the kids. And things were okay for

224
00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:32.320
a while, but Doug would still be away from them

225
00:13:32.360 --> 00:13:34.919
for days and sometimes weeks at a time, even after

226
00:13:34.960 --> 00:13:38.399
they had moved to Germany. So whether it was boredom

227
00:13:38.559 --> 00:13:41.080
or just poor decision making, I don't know you can

228
00:13:41.120 --> 00:13:44.360
decide on this one. But Kelly would throw parties at

229
00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:46.960
the house, and Doug was not a big fan of that.

230
00:13:47.279 --> 00:13:51.360
While he was gone, no one, I would argue, no man,

231
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:54.720
at least in the military once their wife gallivant and

232
00:13:54.759 --> 00:13:57.799
around with other fellow soldiers while they're gone. I just

233
00:13:57.879 --> 00:14:01.080
think it made him very uncomfortable and so draw annoyance

234
00:14:01.360 --> 00:14:04.879
on both sides in the marriage. Because of this, Kelly said,

235
00:14:04.919 --> 00:14:07.120
you know what, maybe I should just go back home

236
00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:10.720
with the kids. You finish your tour here and we'll

237
00:14:10.799 --> 00:14:13.159
just have to do this long distance. So she moved

238
00:14:13.159 --> 00:14:15.279
back home to Georgia with the kids while Doug was

239
00:14:15.320 --> 00:14:18.799
completing his service requirements. Now it was the following year,

240
00:14:18.840 --> 00:14:22.919
in nineteen ninety one, whenever Doug would come back home stateside,

241
00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.720
and when he got back it was pretty evident that

242
00:14:26.799 --> 00:14:30.480
the damage had already been done to their marriage. Kelly

243
00:14:30.519 --> 00:14:35.279
decided that she felt maybe it was her time and

244
00:14:35.320 --> 00:14:38.679
that maybe she should now join the army. Maybe I

245
00:14:38.679 --> 00:14:40.080
should go do it. You went and did it, now

246
00:14:40.120 --> 00:14:42.679
I'll go do it. But at that point Doug was

247
00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:45.080
really just fed up with the whole situation and how

248
00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:48.440
they weren't communicating, they weren't getting along, and He's like,

249
00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:51.519
look if you don't want our family and you think

250
00:14:51.559 --> 00:14:53.120
you need to go and leave. Now, you know, I

251
00:14:53.159 --> 00:14:54.840
did this as a sacrifice for us. If you think

252
00:14:54.879 --> 00:14:56.759
it's your time to leave, then why don't we just

253
00:14:56.799 --> 00:14:59.120
not have a family if that's how you want to be.

254
00:14:59.559 --> 00:15:02.440
But he was wasn't dropping the kids though, okay, just her.

255
00:15:02.559 --> 00:15:04.919
He still was a very devoted father to his children.

256
00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:08.840
But by nineteen ninety three, their divorce was final and

257
00:15:08.919 --> 00:15:12.919
they were done. So Kelly was still in her army life,

258
00:15:13.200 --> 00:15:17.200
but she hated it. It was not what she thought

259
00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:19.240
it would be when she was the one actually there,

260
00:15:19.879 --> 00:15:23.240
and she figured that she had to do something to

261
00:15:23.240 --> 00:15:24.879
get out of there. And the only thing that she

262
00:15:24.919 --> 00:15:26.960
could really think to do to get out of there

263
00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:31.679
would be to get pregnant. And guess what, that's exactly

264
00:15:31.720 --> 00:15:34.879
what she did. She ended up getting pregnant by a

265
00:15:34.919 --> 00:15:38.360
fellow soldier. So when that happened, Kelly was sent back

266
00:15:38.399 --> 00:15:42.279
home to finish out her pregnancy. When she found out

267
00:15:42.440 --> 00:15:46.399
just a few months shy of giving birth that the

268
00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:51.039
father of this new baby ended up passing away. So

269
00:15:51.120 --> 00:15:53.960
he had been diagnosed with cancer and he succumbed to

270
00:15:54.080 --> 00:15:57.679
that before the baby was even born. A few months later,

271
00:15:57.720 --> 00:16:00.879
which was that following November, she would give birth to

272
00:16:01.120 --> 00:16:05.320
a baby boy that she named Jonathan Dakota, which they

273
00:16:05.320 --> 00:16:09.000
lovingly would call Cody. So she was now a single

274
00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:13.840
mom and she was trying to move on with life,

275
00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:17.120
as was Doug. And you know, they're divorced and they're

276
00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:20.840
doing their own thing. Well, they both had some unimportant

277
00:16:21.120 --> 00:16:26.080
dating relationships respectively, but it's in this situation that they

278
00:16:26.559 --> 00:16:29.399
found that the heart wants with the heart wants, even

279
00:16:29.799 --> 00:16:35.480
when it's tough, and amazingly, Doug was still thinking about

280
00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:39.039
his ex wife. Had they not tried hard enough? Did

281
00:16:39.039 --> 00:16:42.399
we really give it our all? We were dealing with

282
00:16:42.440 --> 00:16:44.120
a lot of stress. There was a lot of things

283
00:16:44.120 --> 00:16:47.919
that was happening. Was it really over over or did

284
00:16:47.919 --> 00:16:51.559
we just flash out and end things before we should have?

285
00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:56.600
And it turned out Kelly was actually thinking about Doug too,

286
00:16:57.360 --> 00:17:00.200
the same thoughts of maybe we could have done more,

287
00:17:00.320 --> 00:17:03.600
maybe we should have worked things out. So Douve decided

288
00:17:03.639 --> 00:17:05.680
one day he couldn't take it anymore. He picked with

289
00:17:05.759 --> 00:17:09.119
the phone and he called Kelly just to talk. Okay,

290
00:17:09.160 --> 00:17:12.960
no arguing, just talk. There's a lot of history and

291
00:17:13.119 --> 00:17:16.440
children were impacted by the breakup of their family, and

292
00:17:16.519 --> 00:17:20.240
so they got to talking, and sure enough that talking

293
00:17:20.279 --> 00:17:24.359
turned into hanging out, which turned into a rekindled spark,

294
00:17:24.920 --> 00:17:29.119
and the things just were going well when just like that,

295
00:17:29.960 --> 00:17:34.039
marriage number two came for the both of them, but

296
00:17:34.079 --> 00:17:36.319
with the original spouse. So they're both on their second

297
00:17:36.359 --> 00:17:38.559
marriage but with the same spouse. That's kind of funny.

298
00:17:39.240 --> 00:17:41.680
It kind of made me wonder too. I said to myself,

299
00:17:41.799 --> 00:17:43.799
I'm like, do you say that this is my second

300
00:17:43.920 --> 00:17:47.079
husband if he's actually the same as your first husband,

301
00:17:47.160 --> 00:17:48.799
or you just say this is my husband. I don't know,

302
00:17:48.920 --> 00:17:53.200
but maybe wonder for a second. But what about that

303
00:17:53.359 --> 00:17:57.000
random third child that was now in the family. Made

304
00:17:57.039 --> 00:17:58.519
you kind of wonder about that, right because they got

305
00:17:58.559 --> 00:18:02.880
divorced and then she has this baby. Well, hopefully from

306
00:18:02.920 --> 00:18:05.519
what I've told you so far, you should know Doug

307
00:18:05.680 --> 00:18:09.079
by now, and he did the mature thing. That child

308
00:18:09.160 --> 00:18:12.640
was brought into this world fatherless, and Doug was never

309
00:18:12.839 --> 00:18:16.960
going to treat that baby any different. It wasn't his fault,

310
00:18:17.039 --> 00:18:19.519
and so Doug took on that child as his own too.

311
00:18:19.759 --> 00:18:22.920
The family unit was back together. He had a bonus

312
00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:26.240
son to boot, and as far as Doug was concerned

313
00:18:26.440 --> 00:18:30.039
more love to share. What a great guy, What a

314
00:18:30.079 --> 00:18:34.319
great great guy. So by nineteen ninety seven they had

315
00:18:34.359 --> 00:18:37.279
been married a total of about seven years. They had

316
00:18:37.359 --> 00:18:42.000
these three children between them, and life was lifing when

317
00:18:42.279 --> 00:18:47.319
on Saturday, February seventh, Kelly and Doug had different plans

318
00:18:47.359 --> 00:18:49.559
for the evening. The kids were going to be staying

319
00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:52.880
with a sitter, and Kelly had plans to go out

320
00:18:52.920 --> 00:18:55.400
with some friends, some dinner, maybe some dancing, and just

321
00:18:55.440 --> 00:18:58.440
go blow off some steam and have a girl's night. Well,

322
00:18:58.599 --> 00:19:01.640
Doug had this couple that he was friends with. They

323
00:19:01.640 --> 00:19:05.519
were called the Nesbits, and they lived nearby, and he

324
00:19:05.599 --> 00:19:07.640
had promised them that he would go over there and

325
00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:10.440
he would help them work on a vehicle that was

326
00:19:10.440 --> 00:19:13.039
having some trouble that night, which was something that Doug

327
00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:16.359
liked to do. Tinkering was his jam, and Doug wasn't

328
00:19:16.359 --> 00:19:21.079
afraid to get greasy. So they decided that they would

329
00:19:21.079 --> 00:19:23.000
go do their own thing that night and they would

330
00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:25.559
meet up that evening. So after the fun of the

331
00:19:25.640 --> 00:19:29.160
night ended, Kelly returned back home and she was kind

332
00:19:29.160 --> 00:19:31.599
of surprised to find that Doug was still over at

333
00:19:31.640 --> 00:19:34.599
the Nesbit's house. So she got into her Jammy's, and

334
00:19:34.720 --> 00:19:39.200
she took her sleeping pill and before she fell asleep,

335
00:19:39.240 --> 00:19:41.240
she slipped into bed and was hanging out and she

336
00:19:41.359 --> 00:19:43.880
dozed off and went to sleep. So the next morning

337
00:19:43.920 --> 00:19:46.480
rolls around and when she woke up, she reaches over

338
00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:49.759
and Doug wasn't in the bed. So she got up

339
00:19:49.839 --> 00:19:52.640
and she looked for him, Doug, Doug, you know, are

340
00:19:52.640 --> 00:19:55.279
you here, Doug? Are you outside? Where did he go?

341
00:19:55.359 --> 00:19:58.319
Because he wasn't in the bed, he wasn't in the house.

342
00:19:58.359 --> 00:20:01.119
After she checked all the rooms, she went outside, his

343
00:20:01.240 --> 00:20:03.880
car was not in the driveway. So she figured, well,

344
00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:08.200
maybe he stayed at his friend's house. Maybe they stayed

345
00:20:08.240 --> 00:20:10.799
up late drinking or something and he stayed there. But

346
00:20:10.839 --> 00:20:13.960
that really wasn't normal, okay, So she was worried about

347
00:20:13.960 --> 00:20:16.880
this because he didn't typically do that. So she grabs

348
00:20:16.880 --> 00:20:18.720
the phone and she calls over to the Nesbits to

349
00:20:18.759 --> 00:20:21.400
see if Doug was there, but they said, no, he's

350
00:20:21.400 --> 00:20:23.519
not here, and she said, oh, well, what time did

351
00:20:23.559 --> 00:20:27.119
he leave and they said no, he left about ten

352
00:20:27.160 --> 00:20:31.359
o'clock last night. He was headed home last night. So

353
00:20:31.559 --> 00:20:35.279
alarmed by this, she hangs up the phone and she's like,

354
00:20:35.279 --> 00:20:36.599
oh my god, I gotta call his parents. Maybe he

355
00:20:36.599 --> 00:20:38.720
went to his parents' house. Maybe, you know, that's the case,

356
00:20:38.759 --> 00:20:43.400
that makes sense. So she called his parents. But when

357
00:20:43.440 --> 00:20:46.839
she explained that Doug hadn't come home and he wasn't home,

358
00:20:47.240 --> 00:20:49.480
his parents said, well, we haven't seen him or heard

359
00:20:49.480 --> 00:20:53.640
from him either today. At least he's not here. Well,

360
00:20:53.640 --> 00:20:56.839
by one pm, Kelly was frantic. She did not know

361
00:20:56.880 --> 00:20:59.039
where he went. She couldn't find him anywhere any of

362
00:20:59.039 --> 00:21:02.160
his normal stomping ground. So she made a call to police.

363
00:21:02.599 --> 00:21:05.799
And this is when she faced the typical setback that

364
00:21:06.200 --> 00:21:09.279
is mentioned a lot in true crime cases. It's that

365
00:21:09.640 --> 00:21:12.960
it hasn't been twenty four hours yet. He's a grown man.

366
00:21:13.200 --> 00:21:16.440
He can do whatever he wants to do. And there

367
00:21:16.519 --> 00:21:21.400
was no emergency. There was no circumstances that would lend

368
00:21:21.519 --> 00:21:23.920
anyone to believe that something had happened to him. He

369
00:21:24.079 --> 00:21:27.720
just didn't come home. So she would wait the additional

370
00:21:27.799 --> 00:21:30.799
twenty four hours. Doug would not show up, and so

371
00:21:30.880 --> 00:21:33.119
she would call the police again and she would report

372
00:21:33.200 --> 00:21:36.519
him missing. So it's been long enough now, no word

373
00:21:36.559 --> 00:21:39.519
from him. Nothing. Police were now looking for a thirty

374
00:21:39.599 --> 00:21:42.559
year old Doug. He was classified as a missing person

375
00:21:42.960 --> 00:21:44.880
and so they go through all the regular things that

376
00:21:44.880 --> 00:21:46.240
they're going to go to. You know, what was he

377
00:21:46.319 --> 00:21:48.880
last seen wearing, She says, he when I saw him leave,

378
00:21:48.920 --> 00:21:51.720
he had on a black jacket, his jeans, a watch,

379
00:21:51.799 --> 00:21:56.119
he had on his wedding ring. And police are kind

380
00:21:56.119 --> 00:21:58.000
of wondering, could he have had an accident? Did he

381
00:21:58.039 --> 00:22:00.440
maybe wreck because it had been raining the night before.

382
00:22:00.960 --> 00:22:04.519
They go looking for him. They don't find him. They

383
00:22:04.519 --> 00:22:07.200
don't even find his car, nothing, no sign of him.

384
00:22:07.559 --> 00:22:13.400
So two days later, a heavily heavily wooded area would

385
00:22:14.319 --> 00:22:20.079
be being patrolled by a park ranger. So this morning

386
00:22:20.440 --> 00:22:24.160
was cool, it was brisk, and this Georgia ranger was

387
00:22:24.200 --> 00:22:26.960
patrolling out in his area. Whenever he came down this

388
00:22:27.119 --> 00:22:29.680
road and he saw a car that was stopped and

389
00:22:29.759 --> 00:22:33.359
parked off to the side. So he pulls up and

390
00:22:33.839 --> 00:22:35.680
he parks his unit. He gets out to go check

391
00:22:35.720 --> 00:22:38.359
on the vehicle, and as he's walking up, the exterior

392
00:22:38.359 --> 00:22:40.240
of the car looks fine. It hasn't been in a wreck,

393
00:22:40.400 --> 00:22:44.240
nothing huge. But as he got up on it, he realized,

394
00:22:44.279 --> 00:22:47.960
oh my god, the interior of the car was completely

395
00:22:48.039 --> 00:22:51.680
and totally burned out. It was destroyed. Even the tag

396
00:22:51.799 --> 00:22:54.559
was destroyed. So he went around and he looked at

397
00:22:54.559 --> 00:22:56.599
the windshield and he was still able to make out

398
00:22:56.640 --> 00:22:59.920
the VEN number. So he calls into the sheriff's office

399
00:23:00.319 --> 00:23:03.880
gives them this VEN number, and that's whenever police tell

400
00:23:03.960 --> 00:23:08.440
him that the listed owner of this vehicle was Kelly's husband, Doug.

401
00:23:09.240 --> 00:23:13.920
Their last name was Gisson Danner. So, realizing that something

402
00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:16.519
bad has happened for sure, now I mean this car

403
00:23:16.599 --> 00:23:20.240
is burned up, a detective was called in to come

404
00:23:20.359 --> 00:23:23.240
to the area of the burned out car. So the

405
00:23:23.319 --> 00:23:26.200
area was noted that it was parked in a pretty

406
00:23:26.240 --> 00:23:28.960
desolate wooded area. You would not be traveling down this

407
00:23:29.039 --> 00:23:33.839
road for just no reason. Believing that to be the case,

408
00:23:34.599 --> 00:23:39.039
Doug should have been right there in that area if

409
00:23:39.039 --> 00:23:41.720
something had happened to him. So search parties were put

410
00:23:41.799 --> 00:23:45.799
together and they go out searching for Doug. They are

411
00:23:45.839 --> 00:23:49.359
walking the terrain, and they even put a heat seeking

412
00:23:49.759 --> 00:23:52.359
helicopter in the air and that was deployed that was

413
00:23:52.400 --> 00:23:54.519
flying around trying to see if they could locate him.

414
00:23:54.880 --> 00:23:56.839
But with all of this effort and these people in

415
00:23:56.880 --> 00:24:01.640
time that was put in, they still did not find Doug. Well,

416
00:24:01.680 --> 00:24:04.400
no one likes to be the bearer of bad news.

417
00:24:04.839 --> 00:24:08.680
But police had to notify Kelly about the car, and

418
00:24:08.759 --> 00:24:11.000
not only that they found it, but the condition of it.

419
00:24:11.720 --> 00:24:13.759
So when they go to the house and they tell

420
00:24:13.799 --> 00:24:16.319
her we found the car, but listen, it's been burned up.

421
00:24:16.839 --> 00:24:21.640
Kelly became inconsolable, an absolute wreck, because this did not

422
00:24:21.799 --> 00:24:24.759
make sense. Life was going good, you know, we were

423
00:24:24.799 --> 00:24:27.000
just going out for a good time. He was going

424
00:24:27.039 --> 00:24:30.000
to work on a car. You know, Doug's a responsible person.

425
00:24:30.039 --> 00:24:33.200
He didn't take risks. How the hell could his car

426
00:24:33.319 --> 00:24:38.279
end up burned on a rural roadside. So she's panicking,

427
00:24:38.279 --> 00:24:39.839
she's freaking out, but the kids are at home. So

428
00:24:39.880 --> 00:24:41.799
an investigator pulls her to the side and it's like,

429
00:24:41.839 --> 00:24:45.000
come here, let's come talk over here. And he's like, look,

430
00:24:45.640 --> 00:24:47.160
you know, I don't want to alarm any other people

431
00:24:47.240 --> 00:24:49.160
or the kids or anything, but is there anything going

432
00:24:49.200 --> 00:24:53.559
on that someone may want him dead or anything bad

433
00:24:53.599 --> 00:24:55.640
to happen to him? Well that just ramped Kelly up

434
00:24:55.680 --> 00:24:58.839
even more, and she was adamant, No, absolutely not. He

435
00:24:58.960 --> 00:25:01.599
is a good man and he is a good dad.

436
00:25:01.680 --> 00:25:03.319
He takes care of all of our kids, he takes

437
00:25:03.400 --> 00:25:05.720
care of me. He has no enemies that I could

438
00:25:05.759 --> 00:25:09.799
even name. Okay, this is completely and totally out of

439
00:25:09.880 --> 00:25:14.480
left field. She told the police. The last people that

440
00:25:14.680 --> 00:25:17.720
saw Doug would have been the Nesbits. I called them.

441
00:25:17.799 --> 00:25:19.640
They told me that he was at their house. He

442
00:25:19.640 --> 00:25:23.000
didn't come home from their house. So the police tracked

443
00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:25.480
the Nesbits down and went to go have a word

444
00:25:25.480 --> 00:25:28.640
with them and asked some questions. So the Nesbits did

445
00:25:28.640 --> 00:25:31.720
confirm exactly what Kelly had told them, that he was

446
00:25:31.839 --> 00:25:35.039
last at their house. But they said we saw him

447
00:25:35.119 --> 00:25:39.000
leaving around ten o'clock. They said, expand on that we

448
00:25:39.039 --> 00:25:41.160
need more than that. What exactly was going on? And

449
00:25:41.160 --> 00:25:43.480
they say, okay, well, he ate some dinner with us,

450
00:25:43.920 --> 00:25:45.640
and after they you know, they worked on the car.

451
00:25:45.680 --> 00:25:48.599
He ate some dinner with us, and then we were

452
00:25:48.640 --> 00:25:52.640
walking him out. We were chatting, and then the husband Nesbit,

453
00:25:52.680 --> 00:25:56.000
mister Nesbit, said yeah, oh yeah, we got some spark plugs.

454
00:25:56.319 --> 00:25:58.559
I pulled some spark plugs that I had that were

455
00:25:58.559 --> 00:26:01.519
extra and I gave them to Doug his car and

456
00:26:02.079 --> 00:26:03.960
he was like, oh, thanks, whatever, and then he got

457
00:26:03.960 --> 00:26:06.759
in his car and he drove off. That was it.

458
00:26:06.799 --> 00:26:09.440
We didn't see him after I gave him the spark plugs.

459
00:26:09.960 --> 00:26:14.759
So police mapped the Nesbits home to Doug and Kelly's home,

460
00:26:15.160 --> 00:26:17.920
and what they realized is that it was really kind

461
00:26:17.960 --> 00:26:21.359
of a straight shot giver or take from one house

462
00:26:21.799 --> 00:26:25.039
to the other. And the reason that that mattered was

463
00:26:25.039 --> 00:26:27.799
that Doug said he was going home. But Doug's car

464
00:26:27.920 --> 00:26:32.279
was found five miles roughly off course of that route,

465
00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:36.440
so he obviously was not going straight home. Considering where

466
00:26:36.480 --> 00:26:39.279
the car turned up. Now, had he gotten you have

467
00:26:39.319 --> 00:26:40.960
to ask yourself a lot of questions, even things that

468
00:26:41.000 --> 00:26:43.920
are uncomfortable when you're trying to figure this out. If

469
00:26:43.960 --> 00:26:47.000
he had gotten that far off course, had he done

470
00:26:47.079 --> 00:26:51.400
so possibly to hurt himself. Well, detectives didn't really think

471
00:26:51.440 --> 00:26:53.319
that was the case, because he still would have been

472
00:26:53.680 --> 00:26:56.480
at least close by. You know, you go, maybe he

473
00:26:56.480 --> 00:26:59.039
burned up his car and then went and shot himself

474
00:26:59.079 --> 00:27:02.039
or something. Well, he wasn't there. So the fact that

475
00:27:02.119 --> 00:27:05.119
he wasn't there and the condition of the car being

476
00:27:05.160 --> 00:27:09.000
burned up really was telling police that someone must have

477
00:27:09.079 --> 00:27:13.400
harmed him. This just didn't look like anything else. So

478
00:27:13.440 --> 00:27:16.200
the search parties would continue to go out day after

479
00:27:16.279 --> 00:27:19.880
day after day looking for him out in the woods,

480
00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:23.359
but they weren't coming up with anything, So, feeling that

481
00:27:23.640 --> 00:27:27.400
more coverage was better, Kelly decided she was going to

482
00:27:27.440 --> 00:27:32.000
contact the news and have them come make a story

483
00:27:32.039 --> 00:27:33.759
about this. Please put it out there. My husband didn't

484
00:27:33.759 --> 00:27:36.079
come home. I want to plead for a safer turn.

485
00:27:36.119 --> 00:27:39.799
Whatever I can do, I want people to know. They say, sure,

486
00:27:39.839 --> 00:27:42.079
no problem, and so the media shows up, they set

487
00:27:42.119 --> 00:27:44.559
up their cameras and they decide to do the interview

488
00:27:44.599 --> 00:27:48.160
and what looks to be their daughter's bedroom because there's light,

489
00:27:48.200 --> 00:27:52.319
pink walls or stuffed animals atop the headboard, and Kelly

490
00:27:52.440 --> 00:27:54.599
is just sitting on the side of the bed kind

491
00:27:54.599 --> 00:27:59.160
of with this far stare, and they're asking her kind

492
00:27:59.160 --> 00:28:01.720
of explain what's going on, and she she got really

493
00:28:01.839 --> 00:28:03.640
choked up, and she said, look, I just want him

494
00:28:03.680 --> 00:28:05.920
to walk back through the door. I just want him

495
00:28:05.960 --> 00:28:08.079
to call That's all I need. But you know, if

496
00:28:08.119 --> 00:28:11.920
anybody has seen him or knows where he is, please

497
00:28:12.039 --> 00:28:15.319
just I need him to call home. Something. So as

498
00:28:15.359 --> 00:28:20.240
the investigation and this news coverage continued, it really started

499
00:28:20.240 --> 00:28:23.599
to bring about more questions than answers. And I say

500
00:28:23.640 --> 00:28:28.720
this because after those first initial findings, Doug's parents reached

501
00:28:28.759 --> 00:28:32.000
out to detectives and Doug's senior. He was named after

502
00:28:32.039 --> 00:28:36.119
his dad. Doug Senior told police that he just didn't

503
00:28:36.160 --> 00:28:38.240
think that the marriage was that good and it had

504
00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:42.200
gotten bad since they remarried, and when he was pressed

505
00:28:42.240 --> 00:28:45.079
on that, Doug Senior said specifically that he felt like

506
00:28:45.119 --> 00:28:49.480
they were drowning financially, that she spent too much money,

507
00:28:49.599 --> 00:28:53.119
he had ruined his son's credit. She would go out

508
00:28:53.160 --> 00:28:56.359
partying and she went to bars, and his son was

509
00:28:56.400 --> 00:28:58.359
the one that was always taking care of the kids.

510
00:28:58.799 --> 00:29:02.279
But Kelly did not see it that way at all.

511
00:29:02.799 --> 00:29:05.599
She's you know. They argued like any other couple, and

512
00:29:05.680 --> 00:29:10.160
yes they had divorced once in the past, but they

513
00:29:10.160 --> 00:29:12.480
were back together, they had gotten married, and it was

514
00:29:12.519 --> 00:29:15.119
like his parents were just still bitter about the first

515
00:29:15.160 --> 00:29:18.759
divorce because it had gotten kind of ugly. So police

516
00:29:19.519 --> 00:29:22.599
wanted to go check out other aspects of their life,

517
00:29:22.640 --> 00:29:25.720
and so they went to Kelly's work. After that discussion

518
00:29:25.759 --> 00:29:29.240
that they had with Doug's parents and co workers, when

519
00:29:29.279 --> 00:29:33.200
they were kind of questioned they would shed some insight

520
00:29:33.559 --> 00:29:39.039
to what they described as a formally contemplated or complicated

521
00:29:39.119 --> 00:29:44.240
rather situation. The man that Kelly had moved on with

522
00:29:44.839 --> 00:29:49.440
after the birth of her second child was supposedly still

523
00:29:49.480 --> 00:29:53.079
in contact with Kelly when she had first started back

524
00:29:53.200 --> 00:29:57.599
dating Doug again, but as far as they knew, all

525
00:29:57.640 --> 00:30:01.279
of that had since settled. They had cut things off

526
00:30:01.680 --> 00:30:04.400
after Kelly and Doug made it official that they were

527
00:30:04.440 --> 00:30:07.359
back together. So police wanted to know what was his name?

528
00:30:07.359 --> 00:30:10.079
Who was this guy? And that's whenever they gave the

529
00:30:10.160 --> 00:30:14.559
name Greg Owen, And it just so happened that Greg

530
00:30:15.160 --> 00:30:19.279
was the brother of one of Kelly's coworkers. So the

531
00:30:19.319 --> 00:30:22.119
story goes that Kelly had was at work one day

532
00:30:22.200 --> 00:30:25.000
and she had seen a picture of Greg on his

533
00:30:25.119 --> 00:30:29.119
sister's desk and said, who's that And her coworker said, Oh,

534
00:30:29.119 --> 00:30:30.960
that's my brother. You know, I'll set y'all up if

535
00:30:31.039 --> 00:30:32.640
y'all want to go on a date. And she was like, sure,

536
00:30:32.720 --> 00:30:36.160
that sounds fun. And that's where that relationship had originally

537
00:30:36.200 --> 00:30:40.359
taken off from. Kelly and Greg seemed to get together

538
00:30:40.480 --> 00:30:45.039
well and go together well because they had similar upbringings,

539
00:30:45.119 --> 00:30:47.279
which that made them really be able to relate to

540
00:30:47.319 --> 00:30:50.079
one another. And this is kind of on the Misery

541
00:30:50.400 --> 00:30:56.279
Understands misery spectrum. Domestic violence was something that was chronic

542
00:30:56.799 --> 00:31:01.880
the in Greg's home growing up, and Greg wasn't somebody

543
00:31:01.920 --> 00:31:06.880
that had really launched in life. He didn't ever, his

544
00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:10.920
name was never in the drawing for success in relationships

545
00:31:11.160 --> 00:31:13.319
or you know, big time wins or anything like that.

546
00:31:13.599 --> 00:31:15.799
So when he found Kelly and they had all of

547
00:31:15.839 --> 00:31:18.920
this in common and they understood one another, this became

548
00:31:19.119 --> 00:31:23.759
something rather fresh for him, something really new. Kelly was fun,

549
00:31:23.839 --> 00:31:26.400
she was outgoing, which was something that he really liked.

550
00:31:26.880 --> 00:31:31.079
She commanded a room, and she drew attention, which to

551
00:31:31.200 --> 00:31:33.799
him was never anything that he had a lot of

552
00:31:33.920 --> 00:31:39.279
experience entertaining. So to him, Kelly was just a total catch. Really,

553
00:31:39.319 --> 00:31:42.000
he felt like he was dating up whenever they were dating,

554
00:31:42.519 --> 00:31:46.079
because the truth about Greg was that he was an alcoholic,

555
00:31:46.599 --> 00:31:49.880
He did not make good drinking decisions, and he didn't

556
00:31:49.880 --> 00:31:52.680
even have his own car. So he was the total

557
00:31:53.119 --> 00:31:56.839
opposite of Doug when Kelly met him. But since things

558
00:31:56.839 --> 00:31:59.200
had gone so bad with Doug, who did have it

559
00:31:59.279 --> 00:32:02.880
all together, it didn't really matter to Kelly back when

560
00:32:02.880 --> 00:32:06.559
she was dating him that Greg didn't. Stability didn't always

561
00:32:06.640 --> 00:32:09.640
mean better in Kelly's eyes, and this was proof of that.

562
00:32:09.720 --> 00:32:12.319
It was just different. The reason he didn't have a

563
00:32:12.359 --> 00:32:13.839
car too, By the way was that he had gotten

564
00:32:13.880 --> 00:32:18.480
a DWI arrest for some time prior, but Kelly didn't care.

565
00:32:18.720 --> 00:32:20.400
You know, they had a lot of fun together and

566
00:32:20.720 --> 00:32:25.200
getting to know one another. But after a while, stability

567
00:32:26.559 --> 00:32:30.160
really seemed to be something that Kelly had messed up

568
00:32:30.480 --> 00:32:31.839
in the long run, and you know, it was a

569
00:32:31.880 --> 00:32:34.079
better choice in the long run to be with someone

570
00:32:34.079 --> 00:32:36.599
who was stable. I think we all know that. But

571
00:32:36.599 --> 00:32:38.680
but Greg had been fun. It had been fun for

572
00:32:38.720 --> 00:32:40.759
a while to drink and party and do all those things.

573
00:32:40.799 --> 00:32:44.000
But you can't do that all the time. And that's

574
00:32:44.119 --> 00:32:47.240
kind of what they were doing. And Greg would never

575
00:32:47.279 --> 00:32:50.720
be able to give her nor her kids the life

576
00:32:51.160 --> 00:32:54.119
at the level that Doug really had. It is just

577
00:32:54.240 --> 00:32:56.720
the way it was. And that was the time when

578
00:32:56.799 --> 00:32:59.519
Kelly had started to kind of think about Doug Moore,

579
00:32:59.559 --> 00:33:02.839
and Dug called her and so she was starting awaigh

580
00:33:02.880 --> 00:33:04.920
her options. Doug was wanting to win her back at

581
00:33:04.920 --> 00:33:07.519
this point, and so Kelly finally made her choice, and

582
00:33:07.599 --> 00:33:12.519
she chose Doug. Doug is the better choice in my life. Well,

583
00:33:12.559 --> 00:33:15.720
as police learned about all of this, it got them wondering,

584
00:33:15.799 --> 00:33:19.039
probably the same thing that you're wondering, is did Greg

585
00:33:19.119 --> 00:33:22.559
possibly have something to do with Doug's disappearance because there

586
00:33:22.599 --> 00:33:25.680
may have been anger or jealousy or any of those

587
00:33:25.799 --> 00:33:29.200
factors between two men and a woman who they're fighting over.

588
00:33:30.079 --> 00:33:32.839
So police went back, but first they wanted to speak

589
00:33:32.880 --> 00:33:36.519
with Kelly. Their plan here was they wanted to ask

590
00:33:36.559 --> 00:33:39.559
her who was Greg, and they really wanted to see

591
00:33:39.559 --> 00:33:42.720
if she would lie about that, would she come clean

592
00:33:42.799 --> 00:33:44.279
with the fact that that was a lover and that

593
00:33:44.359 --> 00:33:46.359
she may have been talking to him at the same

594
00:33:46.400 --> 00:33:49.599
time she was dating Doug again, or what she would do.

595
00:33:50.039 --> 00:33:53.319
So they brought it up, but she didn't lie. She

596
00:33:53.440 --> 00:33:55.799
told him the truth. She said we had dated in

597
00:33:55.839 --> 00:33:59.960
the past, but she had ended the relationship. She decided

598
00:34:00.000 --> 00:34:01.680
that she wanted to get back with her ex husband,

599
00:34:02.039 --> 00:34:06.559
but Greg simply could not let it go. Greg, according

600
00:34:06.559 --> 00:34:10.800
to Kelly, became obsessed and threatened to get back at

601
00:34:10.880 --> 00:34:14.639
her for the breakup and it really had gone very

602
00:34:14.920 --> 00:34:18.960
very bad whenever the breakup happened. So this was the

603
00:34:19.000 --> 00:34:23.119
first real solid lead for right now. She was clear,

604
00:34:23.480 --> 00:34:26.039
I'm scared of Greg, though I don't want to be

605
00:34:26.119 --> 00:34:28.079
near him, I don't want to have anything to do

606
00:34:28.159 --> 00:34:30.639
with him. I'm so afraid of it. Matter of fact,

607
00:34:30.679 --> 00:34:32.719
I went and bought a gun to protect me and

608
00:34:32.719 --> 00:34:36.320
my children from him, Like he's dangerous, so please don't

609
00:34:36.400 --> 00:34:37.920
have him come over here or anything like that. And

610
00:34:37.920 --> 00:34:40.239
they're like, no, of course not, we'll go talk to him.

611
00:34:40.840 --> 00:34:43.039
So they look up Greg's record before they go to

612
00:34:43.079 --> 00:34:46.559
talk to him, and he had no serious criminal record.

613
00:34:46.559 --> 00:34:48.719
We're not looking at a guy who was doing arm

614
00:34:48.800 --> 00:34:51.679
robberies and burglary and all that other stuff. He was

615
00:34:51.679 --> 00:34:56.159
actually rather soft spoken and mild. He made poor decisions,

616
00:34:56.800 --> 00:34:59.000
no doubt, but he wasn't He had no history of

617
00:34:59.079 --> 00:35:02.320
violence against to others. He was living in a trailer

618
00:35:02.360 --> 00:35:05.079
park by himself. Whenever they went to go find him,

619
00:35:05.719 --> 00:35:10.239
and whenever he was asked about Kelly, he said, yeah,

620
00:35:10.360 --> 00:35:14.280
we dated in the past, but we broke up whatever,

621
00:35:14.920 --> 00:35:19.880
And so police then mentioned that Doug was missing. They

622
00:35:19.880 --> 00:35:22.360
couldn't find him, and it was kind of interesting that

623
00:35:22.519 --> 00:35:25.440
Kelly had an ex and he's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

624
00:35:26.320 --> 00:35:28.280
I'm a lot of things. You know, I'm a drunk,

625
00:35:28.440 --> 00:35:31.480
but i am not. I don't hurt people. I've never

626
00:35:31.559 --> 00:35:34.159
hurt anybody. That's not something that's even in my wheelhouse

627
00:35:34.199 --> 00:35:36.880
of thinking. And if you're trying to say I had

628
00:35:36.880 --> 00:35:39.079
something to do with that. I do not, and I

629
00:35:39.119 --> 00:35:42.199
don't want to be a part of that. So they

630
00:35:42.239 --> 00:35:43.639
asked him. All right, they give him the date and

631
00:35:43.639 --> 00:35:45.559
they say what were you doing this night? And so

632
00:35:45.599 --> 00:35:47.199
Doug kind of checks into it and he's like, oh,

633
00:35:47.239 --> 00:35:49.519
I was at my friend Lee's house that night. You

634
00:35:49.559 --> 00:35:51.480
can ask him. I was there. We were watching a

635
00:35:51.519 --> 00:35:54.159
movie and I never left the house. I was with

636
00:35:54.239 --> 00:35:56.920
him that night. So police go and they contact Lee,

637
00:35:57.159 --> 00:35:59.920
and when Lee was questioned, he vouched, yes, that is

638
00:36:00.000 --> 00:36:02.039
it's true. My buddy Greg was over here. We were

639
00:36:02.039 --> 00:36:05.679
watching a movie all night, We had fun. Whatever. So

640
00:36:05.719 --> 00:36:07.480
they're kind of stumped at this point. They don't have

641
00:36:07.519 --> 00:36:11.719
a lot to go on. And twelve more days would

642
00:36:11.800 --> 00:36:16.199
go by with no sighting of Doug. Twelve days of

643
00:36:16.239 --> 00:36:19.159
those children not getting tucked in at night by their daddy,

644
00:36:19.519 --> 00:36:22.599
not getting woken up by him in the morning. He

645
00:36:22.679 --> 00:36:25.360
wasn't going to any of their little events. I mean,

646
00:36:25.400 --> 00:36:28.360
it's a huge hole in all of their lives, not

647
00:36:28.400 --> 00:36:33.599
to mention Kelly doesn't have her husband. Twelve days. Well,

648
00:36:33.679 --> 00:36:37.440
that initial ranger, the one that had found his vehicle,

649
00:36:38.360 --> 00:36:40.960
it really started to bother him. The more he kept

650
00:36:40.960 --> 00:36:43.800
thinking about that car. He would go home at night

651
00:36:44.159 --> 00:36:47.960
and he would continuously think about it, but not for

652
00:36:48.159 --> 00:36:51.880
the reason of just oh that car that was weird,

653
00:36:51.880 --> 00:36:56.079
it was burned up. It was that Doug. The more

654
00:36:56.119 --> 00:36:59.400
he learned about the guy that was missing, Doug reminded

655
00:36:59.440 --> 00:37:03.760
this ranger of himself, and he was putting himself in

656
00:37:03.920 --> 00:37:07.920
Doug's shoes. Now, the only difference between Doug and this

657
00:37:08.079 --> 00:37:12.840
ranger was that Doug was white and this ranger was black. Okay,

658
00:37:13.079 --> 00:37:15.760
But other than that, they had a lot in common.

659
00:37:15.800 --> 00:37:18.400
They had both served in the army, they both had

660
00:37:18.440 --> 00:37:23.360
three kids, and so this ranger really pondered it. You know,

661
00:37:23.480 --> 00:37:27.480
where was this man? They never served together, but it

662
00:37:27.559 --> 00:37:31.239
was like this unspoken drive to find a fellow soldier,

663
00:37:31.239 --> 00:37:33.599
almost like no guy left behind. You know, I didn't

664
00:37:33.639 --> 00:37:36.119
know him, but I want to know what happened to him.

665
00:37:36.239 --> 00:37:38.840
And so daily he would do his job, but with

666
00:37:38.960 --> 00:37:42.320
added purpose. At this time, he wanted to find the

667
00:37:42.360 --> 00:37:45.400
gentleman who owned that burned out car and get him

668
00:37:45.440 --> 00:37:50.639
back home to his kids. It just bothered him. So

669
00:37:51.639 --> 00:37:54.239
twelve days had passed and he's continuously doing his job

670
00:37:54.280 --> 00:37:57.760
and looking for this guy. Whenever he turns down a

671
00:37:58.280 --> 00:38:01.480
dirt road out in this area and he's going in

672
00:38:01.519 --> 00:38:04.960
the woods and he's looking upward where there's kind of

673
00:38:05.000 --> 00:38:07.519
like a hill area while he's driving. When he looked

674
00:38:07.599 --> 00:38:09.840
up while he was patrolling, he noticed that there was

675
00:38:09.880 --> 00:38:12.400
an old it looked like a trash bag that caught

676
00:38:12.400 --> 00:38:15.400
his attention up in the brush, and he said, it

677
00:38:15.440 --> 00:38:17.880
looked like a trash bag that had been out in

678
00:38:17.920 --> 00:38:20.119
the sun so long that the color of it had

679
00:38:20.159 --> 00:38:23.159
started to change. How it's you know, trash bag's black,

680
00:38:23.199 --> 00:38:25.400
but then it almost turned like a blue, hazy kind

681
00:38:25.400 --> 00:38:28.760
of color once it has been out so long. So

682
00:38:28.800 --> 00:38:30.920
he decided to get out and inspect it and see

683
00:38:31.199 --> 00:38:33.559
what it was. So he was about fifty seventy five

684
00:38:33.639 --> 00:38:35.719
yards from the road and he had to walk up

685
00:38:35.760 --> 00:38:38.880
and approach it. And as he got close, he realized

686
00:38:39.000 --> 00:38:42.440
quickly that that is not a bag, It was a person,

687
00:38:43.519 --> 00:38:47.519
and that person was not moving and that bluish blackish

688
00:38:47.559 --> 00:38:51.280
that he was seeing was that person who had been

689
00:38:51.280 --> 00:38:54.840
there for a while, and the clothing that he was

690
00:38:55.000 --> 00:38:57.800
seeing there. So immediately he got on the phone and

691
00:38:57.880 --> 00:39:01.159
he called for police. Police come and they mark off

692
00:39:01.159 --> 00:39:04.039
the scene. So they come up to the victim, and

693
00:39:04.079 --> 00:39:06.239
I say victim because he's clearly dead out in the

694
00:39:06.239 --> 00:39:08.400
middle of the woods where he doesn't belong. And they

695
00:39:08.400 --> 00:39:11.119
could tell a few things initially that this was a male,

696
00:39:11.559 --> 00:39:16.800
he was white, and he had met a very very

697
00:39:17.159 --> 00:39:20.679
violent death. Whatever had happened to him. The man was

698
00:39:20.760 --> 00:39:24.360
laying face down whenever they first got to him. Well,

699
00:39:24.360 --> 00:39:26.800
when it came time to roll him over, they grab

700
00:39:26.880 --> 00:39:29.320
him from one side and they roll him up. They

701
00:39:29.320 --> 00:39:32.679
were horrified when they did it to find that one

702
00:39:32.840 --> 00:39:36.960
whole side of this man's face and neck were gone.

703
00:39:37.320 --> 00:39:41.440
There were multiple stab wounds that were believed to be

704
00:39:41.480 --> 00:39:44.079
the cause of death, but due to all of the

705
00:39:44.159 --> 00:39:47.280
animal and insect activity that had gone on over the

706
00:39:47.360 --> 00:39:51.159
last twelve days, it really wasn't very clear what had

707
00:39:51.199 --> 00:39:55.239
happened to him. The animals had consumed portions of him.

708
00:39:55.679 --> 00:39:58.840
He had been decomposing for twelve days, which also now

709
00:39:58.880 --> 00:40:01.440
meant that the bugs were using his body as a

710
00:40:01.480 --> 00:40:04.519
home for them to lay their eggs, which brought maggots

711
00:40:04.559 --> 00:40:09.039
and all the nastiness that comes with the territory. So

712
00:40:09.119 --> 00:40:12.079
the police decided, now that they've assessed the wounds and

713
00:40:12.119 --> 00:40:15.840
what they think happened here they reach into his pockets,

714
00:40:16.119 --> 00:40:18.960
and when they reached into his front pocket, they pull

715
00:40:19.039 --> 00:40:24.159
out a set of spark plugs. And that's whenever they

716
00:40:24.199 --> 00:40:27.280
reached into his back pocket where a wallet was still there,

717
00:40:27.559 --> 00:40:29.440
and whenever they pulled that out and opened it up,

718
00:40:29.480 --> 00:40:34.920
they found the ID of the missing Doug Gisenberg. Now

719
00:40:34.960 --> 00:40:37.360
Doug wore glasses normally, but he didn't have him on,

720
00:40:38.159 --> 00:40:40.719
so that was kind of curious. But they were soon

721
00:40:40.800 --> 00:40:45.800
located nearby where his body was. This man was Doug,

722
00:40:46.000 --> 00:40:48.440
and not only that, he was dressed in the very

723
00:40:48.480 --> 00:40:51.559
same clothing that his wife remembered him to be wearing

724
00:40:51.880 --> 00:40:54.920
when she last saw him, so that, you know, we

725
00:40:54.960 --> 00:40:56.440
have a pretty good timeline here that it had to

726
00:40:56.480 --> 00:40:59.440
have happened to him after ten pm, but before about

727
00:40:59.480 --> 00:41:03.519
eight am the next day. So a very large funeral

728
00:41:03.920 --> 00:41:06.679
was held for Doug about three days after he was found,

729
00:41:06.840 --> 00:41:10.960
and there was a massive turnout because Doug was a

730
00:41:11.159 --> 00:41:13.559
very well liked guy. His family was well known and

731
00:41:13.599 --> 00:41:17.719
they were well liked people too, super nice ceremony. Everybody

732
00:41:17.760 --> 00:41:20.360
there was repeating the same thing, you know, what a

733
00:41:20.400 --> 00:41:22.800
great guy this. I can't believe this happened. He's such

734
00:41:23.119 --> 00:41:26.039
a good guy, Kelly, you know what's happening there. She

735
00:41:26.119 --> 00:41:29.440
is overwhelmed. She threw herself on top of the casket

736
00:41:29.480 --> 00:41:32.199
and just sobbed. She had just you know, they had

737
00:41:32.199 --> 00:41:35.800
just gotten back together basically, you know, they just rekindled

738
00:41:35.800 --> 00:41:41.119
this marriage, and now he's gone forever. Just didn't seem fair. Well,

739
00:41:41.159 --> 00:41:46.320
detectives did go and attend the funeral in not police clothing,

740
00:41:46.320 --> 00:41:48.280
but you know, in regular clothing because they wanted to

741
00:41:48.320 --> 00:41:51.199
watch and see who all was there as well as

742
00:41:51.280 --> 00:41:55.440
who wasn't there, and just to watch behavior. Well, Kelly's

743
00:41:55.480 --> 00:41:59.880
grief was profound and she was very clearly dishoveled. And

744
00:42:00.079 --> 00:42:04.360
sometimes killers will be someone close to the victim and

745
00:42:04.400 --> 00:42:07.320
they'll go to the funeral. But overall, no one really

746
00:42:07.360 --> 00:42:10.199
stood out as someone that would have been an enemy

747
00:42:10.440 --> 00:42:13.199
or someone that they were eyeing that may could have

748
00:42:13.239 --> 00:42:17.039
done this. When the autopsy report came back, Doug's cause

749
00:42:17.039 --> 00:42:20.599
of death would be shown to be it was a homicide.

750
00:42:20.639 --> 00:42:23.679
He had been stabbed four times and this was in

751
00:42:23.719 --> 00:42:27.480
the neck and in the back as well as beaten

752
00:42:27.599 --> 00:42:31.760
about the head with a blunt force object. So his

753
00:42:31.840 --> 00:42:36.840
death was clearly not a suicide. It was clearly a homicide,

754
00:42:37.480 --> 00:42:40.800
and Doug did appear to have been killed at the

755
00:42:40.920 --> 00:42:44.599
spot where his body lay. This was not a secondary

756
00:42:44.719 --> 00:42:48.239
location for his body to have been brought or something

757
00:42:48.280 --> 00:42:52.079
like that. So now everyone's just dumbfounded. They don't know

758
00:42:52.639 --> 00:42:54.559
how this could have happened, why this could have happened.

759
00:42:55.079 --> 00:42:58.400
But a few more days would pass. More days would pass,

760
00:42:58.920 --> 00:43:01.880
and somebody in the commune was starting to feel some

761
00:43:02.039 --> 00:43:05.679
type of way. Someone who knew Kelly, knew her pretty

762
00:43:05.719 --> 00:43:09.199
well and felt like she needed to come forward to

763
00:43:09.239 --> 00:43:12.920
the police and come clean. Who was this person, Well,

764
00:43:13.000 --> 00:43:16.400
it was actually a very very good friend of Kelly's,

765
00:43:16.719 --> 00:43:19.760
but what she had to share was less than friendly.

766
00:43:20.679 --> 00:43:24.320
She told police that she knew that Greg was still

767
00:43:25.880 --> 00:43:30.039
or that Kelly was still seeing Greg while still married

768
00:43:30.280 --> 00:43:32.639
to Doug. And they're like, well, we know that they

769
00:43:32.639 --> 00:43:35.480
were talking still, but once they got remarried, that they

770
00:43:35.519 --> 00:43:38.280
had cut it off. No, no, no, no, no, she said, no,

771
00:43:38.519 --> 00:43:41.800
they were still seeing each other. Police said, oh, really,

772
00:43:42.079 --> 00:43:47.480
like currently right now? She says, yeah, And you know,

773
00:43:47.519 --> 00:43:50.519
I'm pretty confident that I know what I'm talking about,

774
00:43:50.559 --> 00:43:53.039
because she said it wasn't just a gut feeling. I

775
00:43:53.039 --> 00:43:55.760
can pretty much confirm they were sleeping together because I

776
00:43:55.800 --> 00:43:58.000
am the one who dropped Kelly off at a hotel

777
00:43:58.119 --> 00:44:01.639
to meet him, and she was married to Doug, so

778
00:44:02.760 --> 00:44:05.760
I think she was kind of feeling bad for her

779
00:44:05.840 --> 00:44:08.639
role and dropping her off. So please go really well,

780
00:44:08.960 --> 00:44:10.840
let's check into this and just see how true it is.

781
00:44:11.679 --> 00:44:14.639
So they pull the phone records, and sure enough, they

782
00:44:14.639 --> 00:44:17.760
find that there were a lot of calls between Kelly

783
00:44:18.239 --> 00:44:22.039
and Greg, and especially near the date of Doug's death.

784
00:44:22.119 --> 00:44:26.119
So it really did seem that a secret affair was

785
00:44:26.239 --> 00:44:30.800
seemingly being uncovered here. Well, based on the phone records alone,

786
00:44:31.679 --> 00:44:38.360
Kelly's description of her and Doug's or Greg's relationship, or

787
00:44:38.440 --> 00:44:41.320
lack thereof, was kind of shot to hell now, right,

788
00:44:41.400 --> 00:44:44.320
because if Kelly was as afraid of Greg as she

789
00:44:44.360 --> 00:44:45.880
had made it out to be when she said I'm

790
00:44:45.880 --> 00:44:47.639
scared of him. I even got a gun because I'm

791
00:44:47.639 --> 00:44:50.960
so afraid of him, then why would they have spoken

792
00:44:51.360 --> 00:44:55.320
over forty times in the last few weeks. It's an

793
00:44:55.360 --> 00:45:00.400
obvious question, But what really raised eyebrows was that a

794
00:45:00.480 --> 00:45:03.400
majority of the phone calls between the two of them

795
00:45:03.840 --> 00:45:09.679
were initiated by Kelly herself. She was calling him, So

796
00:45:10.559 --> 00:45:13.599
police had an issue, though they could not get past

797
00:45:13.639 --> 00:45:17.280
the fact that Kelly's alibi was solid. If she had

798
00:45:17.320 --> 00:45:19.679
something to do with this, I don't know how she

799
00:45:19.679 --> 00:45:22.440
could have been there because people who were out with

800
00:45:22.480 --> 00:45:26.719
her put her there the entire time that night. I

801
00:45:26.760 --> 00:45:29.880
mean she was out with them when the murder took place.

802
00:45:30.800 --> 00:45:34.639
Greg his alibi was also solid. Remember his friend Lee.

803
00:45:35.440 --> 00:45:39.480
Greg's friend Lee was interviewed and he confirmed that he

804
00:45:39.519 --> 00:45:42.400
was there with him all night. So even if they

805
00:45:42.440 --> 00:45:46.039
were having an affair, they had alibies. So how do

806
00:45:46.119 --> 00:45:49.280
we figure this out of what might have happened. Well,

807
00:45:49.280 --> 00:45:51.840
that's when they decided, they being police, decided to go

808
00:45:52.079 --> 00:45:55.039
back and speak to that friend Lee, and they really

809
00:45:55.079 --> 00:45:58.159
wanted to apply the pressure hard on him, and they said,

810
00:45:58.199 --> 00:46:00.360
we just want to interview again you again to kind

811
00:46:00.360 --> 00:46:04.000
of firm up some stuff. Well, when he was reinterviewed

812
00:46:04.599 --> 00:46:09.199
and the pressure really started being applied, Lee's story started

813
00:46:09.239 --> 00:46:12.760
to change just a little bit, and once the crack

814
00:46:13.039 --> 00:46:17.239
was started, it fell apart. And that's when he admitted

815
00:46:17.360 --> 00:46:21.559
that he lied about Greg being there the entire time

816
00:46:21.719 --> 00:46:24.719
that night, because he said Greg did leave at one

817
00:46:24.760 --> 00:46:28.679
point to go buy beer and he was gone for

818
00:46:28.760 --> 00:46:33.199
a good while. So Okay, well how did he Where

819
00:46:33.199 --> 00:46:34.679
did he go? Because he doesn't have a car, y'all

820
00:46:34.840 --> 00:46:36.639
remember the DWI. How would he get from A to B?

821
00:46:36.840 --> 00:46:39.199
And that's when Lee said someone came and picked him up.

822
00:46:39.239 --> 00:46:42.119
I don't know who it was, but someone came and

823
00:46:42.159 --> 00:46:44.480
picked him up. So police are like, oh, okay, well

824
00:46:45.039 --> 00:46:48.840
now we may have two people here, two suspects. So

825
00:46:49.639 --> 00:46:51.360
that's when they go back to Greg and they say, Greg,

826
00:46:51.360 --> 00:46:54.079
we got we gotta have another discussion with you, another talk.

827
00:46:54.519 --> 00:46:57.079
And this time when they were talking to him, he

828
00:46:57.239 --> 00:47:00.599
was faced with some obvious problems in his origin claim,

829
00:47:00.920 --> 00:47:03.039
like the fact that your friend who said you were

830
00:47:03.039 --> 00:47:05.480
there all night now kind of told us you weren't.

831
00:47:05.880 --> 00:47:09.360
So he now admitted to police once all of this

832
00:47:09.519 --> 00:47:12.559
was kind of broken down, that he had been seeing

833
00:47:12.639 --> 00:47:17.239
Kelly and that they had continued the affair after Doug

834
00:47:17.320 --> 00:47:22.079
and Kelly had remarried. All right, at least he's being

835
00:47:22.119 --> 00:47:25.360
honest and he's telling us this. But he did tell

836
00:47:25.400 --> 00:47:28.920
police this. He said, I asked Kelly, why don't you

837
00:47:29.000 --> 00:47:31.719
just divorce Doug again? Like why are we having to

838
00:47:31.719 --> 00:47:35.559
play this game of back and forth? And Kelly told

839
00:47:35.639 --> 00:47:39.719
him that she couldn't because he just kept coming back.

840
00:47:40.519 --> 00:47:43.360
He would just keep coming back to her. She couldn't

841
00:47:43.400 --> 00:47:46.800
get rid of him. The only way she would probably

842
00:47:46.840 --> 00:47:48.039
ever be able to get rid of him would be

843
00:47:48.079 --> 00:47:51.960
to kill him. Well, Greg thought that she was joking,

844
00:47:52.239 --> 00:47:54.880
but came to learn very quickly that she was serious.

845
00:47:55.000 --> 00:47:58.119
That she would have to kill him if she wanted

846
00:47:58.159 --> 00:48:02.079
to get rid of him. That's whenever she asked Greg

847
00:48:02.679 --> 00:48:06.280
if he would help her do it. In her mind,

848
00:48:07.559 --> 00:48:13.599
the only way that she and Greg could be together

849
00:48:14.239 --> 00:48:17.079
forever would be if Doug was out of the picture.

850
00:48:18.119 --> 00:48:20.800
So it's like, well, why would she even remarry him? Then,

851
00:48:20.880 --> 00:48:24.119
if y'all were going to continue this relationship, why would

852
00:48:24.119 --> 00:48:27.840
she even remarry him? And that's when another bomb was

853
00:48:27.920 --> 00:48:33.000
dropped right then on police and Greg pretty much lays

854
00:48:33.000 --> 00:48:37.320
it out. Kelly had been planning Doug's death since before

855
00:48:37.920 --> 00:48:43.239
she and Doug even got back together married officially. This

856
00:48:43.360 --> 00:48:47.119
wasn't just regret over getting back with him. This was

857
00:48:47.159 --> 00:48:50.840
an actual plan and it had a lot of benefits

858
00:48:50.880 --> 00:48:55.719
to it. Kelly never intended to end things with her

859
00:48:55.760 --> 00:49:00.039
lover Greg from the jump. While Doug was wanting and

860
00:49:00.079 --> 00:49:02.840
his family back and was working hard to get his

861
00:49:02.920 --> 00:49:07.239
family back, Kelly's intentions were less than noble. She went

862
00:49:07.280 --> 00:49:10.559
along with the idea of getting back together and even

863
00:49:10.599 --> 00:49:14.760
went to the extent of remarrying Doug for a completely

864
00:49:15.159 --> 00:49:19.920
different reason than missing and loving him. She had a plan.

865
00:49:20.880 --> 00:49:24.840
Her plan was to get back with Doug and convince him, yes,

866
00:49:24.960 --> 00:49:27.320
let's get married again. Let's start our life over again.

867
00:49:27.400 --> 00:49:30.199
We were meant to be when they got married. That's

868
00:49:30.239 --> 00:49:33.559
whenever she would take out a life insurance policy on him,

869
00:49:33.800 --> 00:49:36.119
which she did. I'm not sure if it was ten

870
00:49:36.320 --> 00:49:39.199
or fifteen thousand dollars because I saw it multiple places

871
00:49:39.239 --> 00:49:41.480
and it was different numbers in both, but we'll say

872
00:49:41.559 --> 00:49:45.599
up to fifteen thousand dollars. And she also knew that

873
00:49:45.800 --> 00:49:48.000
if she married him, Doug was going to take care

874
00:49:48.079 --> 00:49:50.960
of the family. And part of that plan that they

875
00:49:51.039 --> 00:49:54.880
worked together was that Doug would buy them a house

876
00:49:55.440 --> 00:49:57.840
that they were going to live in together, and then

877
00:49:57.920 --> 00:50:01.320
she would have Doug killed. She would cash that life

878
00:50:01.360 --> 00:50:04.559
insurance policy, she'd get to keep the house because her

879
00:50:04.639 --> 00:50:07.480
name is on it, and then she and Greg would

880
00:50:07.480 --> 00:50:11.159
be able to run off in the sunset together. So

881
00:50:11.480 --> 00:50:15.239
as they started to make this plan together to kill Doug,

882
00:50:15.920 --> 00:50:19.039
she wanted to make sure that it looked like a robbery,

883
00:50:19.360 --> 00:50:23.159
which is exactly why she told the police. Whenever they

884
00:50:23.159 --> 00:50:25.280
said what was he last seen wearing? She was kind

885
00:50:25.280 --> 00:50:27.400
of general about his jeans and his shirt, but she

886
00:50:27.559 --> 00:50:29.639
made sure to say he was wearing his wedding ring

887
00:50:30.119 --> 00:50:34.519
and that watch, because if Greg was to kill him,

888
00:50:34.760 --> 00:50:37.639
then Greg would take those items and this would really

889
00:50:37.760 --> 00:50:41.440
validate this claim that it must have been a robbery

890
00:50:42.119 --> 00:50:46.920
gone wrong. February seventh was not a date by chance

891
00:50:47.320 --> 00:50:51.000
that this had taken place either. February seventh was chosen

892
00:50:51.039 --> 00:50:54.800
pretty quickly as the must kill by date because he

893
00:50:54.960 --> 00:50:57.800
was going to be out of the house and Kelly

894
00:50:57.840 --> 00:51:01.760
got invited to go out with friends that night for dancing.

895
00:51:02.199 --> 00:51:05.239
When she got that invite, that is whenever it sealed

896
00:51:05.400 --> 00:51:09.519
Doug's fate. But how could this be done if Greg

897
00:51:09.559 --> 00:51:12.280
didn't have a car and she needed to go out

898
00:51:12.320 --> 00:51:16.480
and be seen by everybody, how could that have worked out? Well?

899
00:51:16.719 --> 00:51:19.840
That was easy, because all Kelly felt she had to

900
00:51:19.880 --> 00:51:25.119
do was bring her killer to her husband. Kelly picked

901
00:51:25.239 --> 00:51:30.960
up Greg and brought him to her marital home with Doug.

902
00:51:31.559 --> 00:51:34.400
After he left the house to go help his buddy

903
00:51:34.800 --> 00:51:36.960
fix the car, she went and picked him up and

904
00:51:37.000 --> 00:51:41.440
brought him home. They went inside together and Doug. She

905
00:51:41.519 --> 00:51:45.320
gave Doug a night stick and a knife, and Doug

906
00:51:45.760 --> 00:51:48.400
found a place to hide and he lay in wait

907
00:51:49.039 --> 00:51:53.360
in that house until Doug got back home. So Kelly

908
00:51:53.519 --> 00:51:57.039
was out dancing and partying and all the while knew

909
00:51:57.599 --> 00:51:59.880
that someone was going to kill her husband, and she

910
00:52:00.000 --> 00:52:02.199
he never said a thing. She was just out there

911
00:52:02.280 --> 00:52:05.239
dancing and tearing up the floor. When her poor husband

912
00:52:05.360 --> 00:52:08.840
arrived back home around ten thirty that night after helping

913
00:52:08.880 --> 00:52:13.159
a friend, he unlocked the door and he walked inside

914
00:52:13.199 --> 00:52:16.480
of the house where Greg was hiding there in the darkness.

915
00:52:16.920 --> 00:52:20.800
Dug none the wiser, and as he stepped inside of

916
00:52:20.840 --> 00:52:24.559
the house without any notice, Doug instantly felt a man

917
00:52:24.719 --> 00:52:27.000
grab him around the neck and put a knife to

918
00:52:27.079 --> 00:52:30.159
his throat, and the man tipped the blade up into

919
00:52:30.719 --> 00:52:34.960
his neck, underneath his chin, and he was very pushy

920
00:52:35.119 --> 00:52:38.079
putting that knife up underneath the neck. The man who

921
00:52:38.119 --> 00:52:40.280
was holding this knife was not kidding, and he made

922
00:52:40.280 --> 00:52:43.719
the commands very clear, get in your car and don't

923
00:52:43.760 --> 00:52:48.519
do anything stupid. Greg then kidnapped Doug at knife point

924
00:52:48.840 --> 00:52:52.679
and forced him into his own car and had him

925
00:52:52.800 --> 00:52:58.519
drive himself into that wooded area at this predesignated spot

926
00:52:59.039 --> 00:52:59.880
that he was going to go to.

927
00:53:00.440 --> 00:53:00.599
Now.

928
00:53:00.599 --> 00:53:04.440
According to Greg, not a word was spoken during that

929
00:53:04.559 --> 00:53:09.280
horrifying ride. I'm gonna guess that Doug remained calm, no doubt,

930
00:53:09.559 --> 00:53:12.079
in hopes that he would be able to at least

931
00:53:12.159 --> 00:53:13.800
think of a way to maybe get away at some

932
00:53:13.880 --> 00:53:16.719
point eyes on the road. He's got a cold blade

933
00:53:16.760 --> 00:53:19.559
shoved up underneath his neck the entire time. This is

934
00:53:19.599 --> 00:53:21.880
clearly not a joke, and he was trying to remain

935
00:53:21.920 --> 00:53:24.480
calm so that he didn't spook the guy with the knife.

936
00:53:24.880 --> 00:53:27.880
But based on what I've read, I believe that the

937
00:53:27.920 --> 00:53:33.400
two men knew one another more than was being brought up,

938
00:53:34.360 --> 00:53:39.280
because there is some speculation that Doug may have known

939
00:53:39.320 --> 00:53:42.199
that his wife was messing around on him. Again, because

940
00:53:42.239 --> 00:53:46.039
another witness from Doug's work said that one time he

941
00:53:46.039 --> 00:53:49.800
heard Doug having a conversation on his phone and they

942
00:53:49.800 --> 00:53:51.639
were yelling back and forth, and he was mad, and

943
00:53:51.679 --> 00:53:53.480
he hung up and someone said, who is that? He goes, Oh,

944
00:53:53.559 --> 00:53:58.159
I guess my wife's boyfriend. That makes me think that

945
00:53:58.280 --> 00:54:00.800
he might have known something, And so I think once

946
00:54:00.840 --> 00:54:04.519
he was taken hostage here Doug knew what was up.

947
00:54:05.440 --> 00:54:09.119
So once they drive, or they Doug drives himself to

948
00:54:09.199 --> 00:54:12.599
his final destination, he's forced to pull over. He puts

949
00:54:12.599 --> 00:54:15.119
the car in park, and he gets out. The entire

950
00:54:15.199 --> 00:54:20.760
time the knife was kept to his throat. Doug complied,

951
00:54:21.159 --> 00:54:23.960
he got out of the car, and then Greg still

952
00:54:24.039 --> 00:54:26.400
kept the knife to his throat and walked him up

953
00:54:26.480 --> 00:54:29.400
the hill off the side of the road. And then

954
00:54:29.440 --> 00:54:31.119
when they got to the spot he wanted, he told

955
00:54:31.159 --> 00:54:34.760
him to stop right here. Doug stopped. He said, get

956
00:54:34.800 --> 00:54:37.719
down on your knees. Doug did as told, He got

957
00:54:37.760 --> 00:54:39.840
down on his knees. And when he got down on

958
00:54:39.880 --> 00:54:43.800
his knees, that's whenever Greg pulled out that night stick

959
00:54:44.000 --> 00:54:47.639
and started bashing him over the head, over and over

960
00:54:47.719 --> 00:54:51.599
again until he collapsed, falling forward from the blows to

961
00:54:51.760 --> 00:54:54.880
his head. Once Doug slammed down face first into the ground,

962
00:54:54.920 --> 00:54:57.079
Greg then jumped on top of him and he pulled

963
00:54:57.079 --> 00:54:59.039
out the knife that he's had this whole time, and

964
00:54:59.079 --> 00:55:02.880
he started just raining down blows into Doug's face and

965
00:55:02.960 --> 00:55:07.519
into his neck until Doug eventually just stopped moving, happy

966
00:55:07.559 --> 00:55:09.800
and convinced that he was dead. At this point, he

967
00:55:09.880 --> 00:55:12.480
got up and that's whenever he took the wedding ring,

968
00:55:12.800 --> 00:55:15.000
and he took the watch just as he was instructed

969
00:55:15.000 --> 00:55:19.239
by Kelly to steal before leaving him in the woods.

970
00:55:19.639 --> 00:55:22.280
And Greg then ran back and got in Doug's car,

971
00:55:22.679 --> 00:55:25.480
making his way to a nearby payphone, where he then

972
00:55:25.599 --> 00:55:28.639
paged Kelly that it was time to pick him up.

973
00:55:29.480 --> 00:55:32.000
He text, I believe he paged the code one two three,

974
00:55:32.079 --> 00:55:33.360
which means it's done.

975
00:55:34.519 --> 00:55:34.719
Well.

976
00:55:34.719 --> 00:55:36.840
It was at that point Kelly's out dancing with the

977
00:55:36.920 --> 00:55:40.079
friends right, having a good time parting it up. When

978
00:55:40.079 --> 00:55:42.800
she gets that page, she knew it was over, her

979
00:55:42.880 --> 00:55:46.400
husband was dead, and she feigned a reason to leave

980
00:55:46.480 --> 00:55:48.239
the party that night. I don't know, guys, I just

981
00:55:48.239 --> 00:55:50.679
feel like I should go home. I got a bad feeling.

982
00:55:50.800 --> 00:55:52.679
I'm just going to go home for the night. And

983
00:55:52.719 --> 00:55:55.519
so she tells all her girlfriends goodbye and she leaves,

984
00:55:55.559 --> 00:55:57.880
but she's not headed home. She goes to pick up Greg.

985
00:55:58.519 --> 00:55:58.639
Well.

986
00:55:58.679 --> 00:56:03.760
When Kelly got there, it wasn't enough that Greg told

987
00:56:03.800 --> 00:56:08.119
her that Doug was dead. She said no, she demanded,

988
00:56:08.480 --> 00:56:10.760
I want to see his body. I want you to

989
00:56:10.800 --> 00:56:16.480
take him to me. So they go back over to

990
00:56:16.559 --> 00:56:20.000
the area where he was murdered. They stop both cars

991
00:56:20.000 --> 00:56:22.000
because they're both in different in their own cars. Greg

992
00:56:22.079 --> 00:56:24.800
is in Dougs and she's in hers. When they get out,

993
00:56:25.159 --> 00:56:28.280
Greg leads her over to where Doug's bloodied and battered

994
00:56:28.360 --> 00:56:33.199
and stabbed body is laying face down, mutilated on the ground,

995
00:56:33.719 --> 00:56:35.920
and Kelly walks over and leans over and kind of

996
00:56:35.960 --> 00:56:38.039
takes it in for a moment, checks it out, and

997
00:56:38.039 --> 00:56:42.639
then she said, okay, cool, let's go. That is what

998
00:56:42.719 --> 00:56:45.480
she said about the man who is not only the

999
00:56:45.519 --> 00:56:50.320
father of her biological child, but the only father that

1000
00:56:50.480 --> 00:56:55.719
any of her children ever knew. Okay, let's go. Not

1001
00:56:55.840 --> 00:56:59.320
an ounce of remorse, not a tear, no shock even

1002
00:57:00.000 --> 00:57:02.880
We just wanted to make sure that it was done.

1003
00:57:03.559 --> 00:57:06.360
And then they walked away from him, leaving him in

1004
00:57:06.400 --> 00:57:09.159
the woods. When they got back to the cars, Greg

1005
00:57:09.320 --> 00:57:12.440
drove Doug's car, Kelly again drove her own, and that's

1006
00:57:12.440 --> 00:57:16.440
when they went to that second location of Luke Edwards Road,

1007
00:57:16.480 --> 00:57:19.599
which is where the car was found. They park, Kelly

1008
00:57:19.639 --> 00:57:21.840
gets out of her car. She brought a coke bottle

1009
00:57:21.880 --> 00:57:25.719
that she had filled with gas, goes over there, dowses

1010
00:57:25.760 --> 00:57:28.880
the car, the inside of the car with the gasoline

1011
00:57:28.920 --> 00:57:32.360
and then it was torched. That's whenever they both go

1012
00:57:32.480 --> 00:57:35.000
back and get in Kelly's car and they went back

1013
00:57:35.360 --> 00:57:38.880
to Greg's house. When they get there, Kelly's in control.

1014
00:57:39.039 --> 00:57:42.800
She undresses him. She takes his clothes, his tools, his knife,

1015
00:57:42.920 --> 00:57:44.960
everything that was used for all of this, and she

1016
00:57:45.039 --> 00:57:47.760
puts it into a garbage bag. And then they just

1017
00:57:47.840 --> 00:57:50.599
kind of wipe their hands. It's a done deal. High five.

1018
00:57:51.079 --> 00:57:54.280
Now we just have to go play the part. Well,

1019
00:57:54.440 --> 00:57:56.360
Greg didn't even get rid of the garbage bag for

1020
00:57:56.400 --> 00:57:58.800
a couple of days. He was like whatever, He just

1021
00:57:59.000 --> 00:58:00.400
left it at the house before where he went and

1022
00:58:00.440 --> 00:58:05.599
dumped it into a dumpster at a convenience store days later. Well,

1023
00:58:05.639 --> 00:58:11.480
once this confession has been received and they confirmed everything

1024
00:58:11.480 --> 00:58:14.920
that was said, Greg was placed under arrest and he

1025
00:58:15.039 --> 00:58:18.000
was charged with felony murder at that same time, and

1026
00:58:18.159 --> 00:58:21.880
arrest warrant for Kelly was issued. When she's arrested, the

1027
00:58:21.960 --> 00:58:24.840
jig is up. She knows that it is. But after

1028
00:58:24.960 --> 00:58:27.639
she was mirandized, she agreed to talk to the police.

1029
00:58:27.639 --> 00:58:30.960
But the story would take a turn here because she

1030
00:58:31.000 --> 00:58:34.360
would start revealing even more. Kelly would then tell the

1031
00:58:34.400 --> 00:58:38.480
police not and that is not true. Greg did this alone.

1032
00:58:39.079 --> 00:58:41.760
I had nothing to do with this, She said. I

1033
00:58:41.920 --> 00:58:46.880
told you that Greg and I were talking, but that

1034
00:58:47.039 --> 00:58:50.119
was because the threats that he had been making to

1035
00:58:50.320 --> 00:58:53.440
me forced me to have to talk to him. And

1036
00:58:54.239 --> 00:58:55.679
he told me, if I don't continue to have these

1037
00:58:55.719 --> 00:58:57.360
conversations and we're not talking on the phone and we're

1038
00:58:57.360 --> 00:58:59.920
not doing all these things, then you know he's gonna

1039
00:59:00.119 --> 00:59:02.519
he's going to kill her and he's going to kill

1040
00:59:02.599 --> 00:59:06.280
the kids. But while they're breaking all of this down,

1041
00:59:06.280 --> 00:59:07.599
and I'm not going to go into all the minutia

1042
00:59:07.599 --> 00:59:09.920
of it, but she basically gets caught in multiple lives

1043
00:59:10.000 --> 00:59:12.760
and things that she's saying just don't add up. So

1044
00:59:13.039 --> 00:59:14.920
while this is going on and it's kind of getting

1045
00:59:14.960 --> 00:59:18.519
muddy on what exactly went which way and who did what,

1046
00:59:19.239 --> 00:59:22.559
Greg then agrees, you know what, give me a deal

1047
00:59:22.599 --> 00:59:26.960
and I'll testify against her. This lover has turned. So

1048
00:59:27.000 --> 00:59:30.280
they say, fine, we'll do that. So Greg agrees to

1049
00:59:30.320 --> 00:59:35.480
a deal of life with parole after twenty years. And

1050
00:59:36.079 --> 00:59:40.280
he agreed also in that agreement to not seek it

1051
00:59:40.800 --> 00:59:44.000
as part of the deal, which means he would confirm

1052
00:59:44.159 --> 00:59:46.599
that would confirm that he got at least twenty years

1053
00:59:47.039 --> 00:59:50.960
before he would try to go get parole. So police

1054
00:59:50.960 --> 00:59:52.880
felt like, all right, good, if we can get her too,

1055
00:59:53.239 --> 00:59:55.320
we're willing to go with that. He took the deal.

1056
00:59:55.880 --> 01:00:00.480
Kelly was also offered kind of a deal to confess

1057
01:00:00.519 --> 01:00:03.199
and do all of these things, but she decided she

1058
01:00:03.239 --> 01:00:05.559
wasn't gonna take it. She wasn't gonna do that. And

1059
01:00:05.599 --> 01:00:08.880
the thought process here was that because no one, no jury,

1060
01:00:08.960 --> 01:00:12.440
is gonna convict a mother of this who didn't even

1061
01:00:12.519 --> 01:00:15.920
actually do the murder herself. So she was willing to

1062
01:00:16.039 --> 01:00:17.519
roll the dice and she was like, I'm just gonna

1063
01:00:17.519 --> 01:00:19.199
go to trial because I don't think that I'll be convicted.

1064
01:00:19.239 --> 01:00:21.440
I didn't stab him, I didn't do this, and so

1065
01:00:21.559 --> 01:00:24.639
I'm gonna I'm gonna take my chances. So November the second,

1066
01:00:24.719 --> 01:00:27.760
nineteen ninety eight, that's whenever the trial starts. She has

1067
01:00:27.800 --> 01:00:31.599
pled not guilty, and Greg took the stand, and from

1068
01:00:31.599 --> 01:00:35.280
every report from that, he was very believable in all

1069
01:00:35.400 --> 01:00:38.760
of his testimony. The defense would attack this and they

1070
01:00:38.800 --> 01:00:40.440
would try to pain him out to be a liar

1071
01:00:40.480 --> 01:00:44.360
with no credibility. But that's whenever Kelly kind of got

1072
01:00:44.840 --> 01:00:49.199
slapped a little bit because her close friend Pam also

1073
01:00:49.679 --> 01:00:54.119
took the stand. Now why would this matter, Well, Kelly

1074
01:00:54.159 --> 01:00:58.639
had been calling Pam since she went to jail, right

1075
01:00:58.679 --> 01:01:01.320
she was reaching out to her friends and talking to people,

1076
01:01:01.719 --> 01:01:04.199
and she had called Kelly from jail and in one

1077
01:01:04.239 --> 01:01:07.960
phone call, she admitted to Pam that she did it,

1078
01:01:08.360 --> 01:01:12.000
and Pam's mind was blown. She could not believe that

1079
01:01:13.320 --> 01:01:17.559
she admitted to it. And an inmate that did time

1080
01:01:17.599 --> 01:01:23.239
with Kelly testified to that fact that after the confession

1081
01:01:23.360 --> 01:01:27.119
and after Kelly had told her friend Pam that that

1082
01:01:27.199 --> 01:01:30.000
she had done it, then Kelly started to rethink it

1083
01:01:30.039 --> 01:01:31.320
and was like, oh shit, I shouldn't have done that.

1084
01:01:31.320 --> 01:01:34.360
I probably shouldn't have said that. So while she's behind bars,

1085
01:01:34.679 --> 01:01:39.079
after she's con confessed to her friend Kelly, she then

1086
01:01:39.119 --> 01:01:43.239
starts trying to solicit somebody from behind bars to go

1087
01:01:43.320 --> 01:01:46.119
beat the ever living shit out of Pam, beat her,

1088
01:01:46.440 --> 01:01:48.559
beat her within an inch of her life. I e.

1089
01:01:48.679 --> 01:01:52.519
Witness intimidation so that she wouldn't tell anybody about the

1090
01:01:52.559 --> 01:01:56.519
confession that she had had told her, And to sweeten

1091
01:01:56.599 --> 01:01:59.960
the pot, she also told whoever would go beat the

1092
01:02:00.039 --> 01:02:02.480
crap out of Pam that she would give them ten

1093
01:02:02.599 --> 01:02:08.480
thousand dollars if they would take the fall for her. Well,

1094
01:02:08.519 --> 01:02:11.840
as you can imagine, all of this gets shown in court.

1095
01:02:12.159 --> 01:02:14.480
Kelly's done, she's cooked, she smoked, and she has found

1096
01:02:14.519 --> 01:02:18.559
guilty of felony murder. But guess what the jury decides

1097
01:02:18.639 --> 01:02:22.679
to sentence her to the death penalty. They give her

1098
01:02:23.239 --> 01:02:27.199
death and a juror that was on the jury was

1099
01:02:27.280 --> 01:02:29.760
quoted after the trials over as saying, quote, that is

1100
01:02:29.800 --> 01:02:36.719
the meanest woman alive. Quote. So, Kelly was now the

1101
01:02:36.880 --> 01:02:40.239
only woman on death row in the state of Georgia.

1102
01:02:41.079 --> 01:02:44.800
And while she was there, the argument became that she

1103
01:02:44.840 --> 01:02:47.599
would change over time and that she would try to

1104
01:02:47.800 --> 01:02:51.239
help other inmates. She would have years of being a

1105
01:02:51.280 --> 01:02:54.360
model inmate, and she was even able to establish a

1106
01:02:54.440 --> 01:02:58.119
relationship with her children. Again, while she was spending these

1107
01:02:58.239 --> 01:03:01.400
years behind bars, they would start to visit her and

1108
01:03:01.440 --> 01:03:04.679
they would really want start petitioning to please have her

1109
01:03:04.920 --> 01:03:08.960
her sentence commuted because they felt that she had changed. Dakota,

1110
01:03:09.800 --> 01:03:12.880
her youngest son, he agreed that over time she had

1111
01:03:12.960 --> 01:03:15.119
changed too, and that she was starting. You know, she

1112
01:03:15.199 --> 01:03:18.119
was helping people, he said, she even was being a

1113
01:03:18.159 --> 01:03:21.360
mom to us, Like you could tell that there was

1114
01:03:21.360 --> 01:03:24.800
a real change. And Dakota said in the last meeting

1115
01:03:24.880 --> 01:03:27.480
that he had with her that he begged her to

1116
01:03:27.599 --> 01:03:31.199
please tell the truth. If you have changed, please tell

1117
01:03:31.239 --> 01:03:36.519
the truth. And in that meeting, Kelly made a full

1118
01:03:37.440 --> 01:03:42.280
confession to her children that she was guilty as charged.

1119
01:03:42.719 --> 01:03:46.719
She did not try to deny it. She had been

1120
01:03:46.719 --> 01:03:48.679
there a long time and she wanted to come clean

1121
01:03:48.840 --> 01:03:54.920
and admit it and all of that. So she did

1122
01:03:55.000 --> 01:03:59.320
call her kids before her execution date came, and she

1123
01:03:59.360 --> 01:04:04.000
wanted to tell the kids that she loved them now.

1124
01:04:05.039 --> 01:04:09.760
Kelly would sit on death row until March second of

1125
01:04:10.159 --> 01:04:13.559
twenty fifteen, whenever she was brought over to the death

1126
01:04:13.599 --> 01:04:15.960
house to be executed. That was the date that this

1127
01:04:16.119 --> 01:04:18.760
was all supposed to go down. But there was a

1128
01:04:18.840 --> 01:04:23.360
hiccup when the day came because right before she was

1129
01:04:23.360 --> 01:04:26.239
brought in to be put to death, a doctor and

1130
01:04:26.239 --> 01:04:29.800
a pharmacist who were inspecting the lethal injection drugs that

1131
01:04:29.840 --> 01:04:32.280
they were supposed to use, they took issue with it.

1132
01:04:32.760 --> 01:04:34.400
They were looking at the drug and they go, I

1133
01:04:34.440 --> 01:04:37.440
don't know, these look cloudy, they don't look they don't

1134
01:04:37.480 --> 01:04:40.599
look right. Well. Because of the way that they looked,

1135
01:04:40.679 --> 01:04:43.440
there was an issue and there was concerns about the

1136
01:04:43.440 --> 01:04:46.519
effectiveness of the drugs and the safety and all of that,

1137
01:04:47.039 --> 01:04:51.079
and because of that, they debated her fate. The State

1138
01:04:51.079 --> 01:04:56.039
of Georgia debated her fate roughly thirteen more hours before

1139
01:04:56.119 --> 01:05:02.519
choosing to not proceed with the execution. So Kelly gets

1140
01:05:02.519 --> 01:05:04.679
told she's being put to death, tells everybody goodbye, and

1141
01:05:04.719 --> 01:05:07.440
then gets taken back and says, never mind, we're not

1142
01:05:07.440 --> 01:05:11.440
going to execute you. Well, she took somewhat of offense

1143
01:05:11.480 --> 01:05:14.280
to this because she felt like these thirteen hours of

1144
01:05:14.360 --> 01:05:19.840
unknowns violated her Eighth Amendment right and qualified as cruel

1145
01:05:19.960 --> 01:05:23.559
and unusual punishment. She said that it put her under

1146
01:05:23.679 --> 01:05:28.039
undue stress and she felt immense fear and anxiety. Now

1147
01:05:28.079 --> 01:05:30.360
to that, I do want to say, I wonder if

1148
01:05:30.400 --> 01:05:32.599
that's exactly what Doug felt with a knife pressed to

1149
01:05:32.599 --> 01:05:34.800
his throat and being walked through the woods, placed on

1150
01:05:34.840 --> 01:05:37.960
his knees and then you know, killed. You know, I

1151
01:05:38.000 --> 01:05:40.719
think that may have possibly brought about some undue stress.

1152
01:05:41.079 --> 01:05:43.880
But what he didn't get to do also is Doug

1153
01:05:43.960 --> 01:05:46.880
didn't get to write a thirty page complaint to submit

1154
01:05:46.960 --> 01:05:50.480
to his killers and have them contemplated, did he. He

1155
01:05:50.519 --> 01:05:55.280
didn't get any of that. She complained of the stress

1156
01:05:55.360 --> 01:05:58.719
of waiting thirteen hours, but she didn't have shit to

1157
01:05:58.760 --> 01:06:02.719
say whenever Doug layout there being mutilated by animals for

1158
01:06:02.840 --> 01:06:05.159
twelve days while she hunk her down with her lover

1159
01:06:05.360 --> 01:06:07.400
who had just beaten his brains in and stabbed him

1160
01:06:07.400 --> 01:06:10.679
to death. She didn't take any offense to that twelve days,

1161
01:06:11.239 --> 01:06:16.159
but she was upset about those thirteen hours unbelievable. So

1162
01:06:16.199 --> 01:06:19.159
while she didn't die the day that she was originally scheduled,

1163
01:06:19.519 --> 01:06:22.199
there were more days in the calendar to choose from,

1164
01:06:22.239 --> 01:06:25.239
so six months would pass. She would live an additional

1165
01:06:25.519 --> 01:06:28.000
six months, and a lot of people showed up on

1166
01:06:28.039 --> 01:06:30.920
her behalf to show support and to try to stop

1167
01:06:30.960 --> 01:06:33.800
the execution from going forward. These people were expressing how

1168
01:06:33.880 --> 01:06:37.360
much Kelly had changed and that her life was worth saving.

1169
01:06:37.559 --> 01:06:40.679
And this was pretty wild to me, but even the Pope.

1170
01:06:41.199 --> 01:06:45.840
The Pope spoke out against her being put to death

1171
01:06:45.920 --> 01:06:50.599
while visiting the US during this time, this incredible push

1172
01:06:50.960 --> 01:06:54.400
to not execute her was being put on full display.

1173
01:06:55.159 --> 01:06:57.320
And I'm gonna go a little bit personal here, and

1174
01:06:57.360 --> 01:06:59.239
if you don't want to hear eating fast forward, that's fine.

1175
01:06:59.280 --> 01:07:03.840
But I've always been raised to believe that respect should

1176
01:07:03.840 --> 01:07:08.480
be given to people in power positions religious figures included

1177
01:07:08.960 --> 01:07:11.599
you give respect to these people, they have earned it. Now,

1178
01:07:11.599 --> 01:07:15.000
I'll tell you I'm not Catholic, but I certainly respect

1179
01:07:15.360 --> 01:07:18.800
and appreciate the role of the Pope as a religious leader.

1180
01:07:19.320 --> 01:07:22.559
And it really got me thinking while I was writing this.

1181
01:07:22.880 --> 01:07:25.679
You know, I was digging really deep while I was

1182
01:07:25.679 --> 01:07:30.199
thinking this through. And that said, it feels intrinsically wrong

1183
01:07:30.920 --> 01:07:33.239
to say that you disagree with the Pope on something,

1184
01:07:33.280 --> 01:07:35.440
even if I'm not Catholic, to say I don't agree

1185
01:07:35.440 --> 01:07:38.079
with the Pope, it just it just feels wrong. You know,

1186
01:07:38.119 --> 01:07:40.239
who am I to say such a thing that I

1187
01:07:40.280 --> 01:07:42.880
don't agree with the Pope. The core qualities of the

1188
01:07:42.880 --> 01:07:46.000
Pope exude, you know, they're supposed to exude things that

1189
01:07:46.039 --> 01:07:49.480
I pray to myself that one day I could be

1190
01:07:49.559 --> 01:07:52.639
as christ Like as possible, to have complete humility and

1191
01:07:53.119 --> 01:07:55.079
unending mercy. But I got to tell you, I'm not

1192
01:07:55.119 --> 01:07:58.039
there yet. I'm just not there. I'm thinking about what

1193
01:07:58.159 --> 01:08:01.320
Doug and you know what he went through. The terror

1194
01:08:01.559 --> 01:08:04.159
of the time as he was taken by knife point

1195
01:08:04.159 --> 01:08:08.440
in his home, forced to drive in the dark, kneeling down,

1196
01:08:09.400 --> 01:08:11.960
knowing you're about to be killed, I can't get past

1197
01:08:12.000 --> 01:08:16.199
that and his family finding out. They found out about

1198
01:08:16.199 --> 01:08:19.039
what happened to him later on, but then the grief

1199
01:08:19.439 --> 01:08:22.880
that they have to live with, that grief forever. They

1200
01:08:22.880 --> 01:08:27.359
don't get mercy, they don't get relief, they don't get anything.

1201
01:08:28.239 --> 01:08:31.039
They get nothing. You lose. I feel like, you know,

1202
01:08:31.039 --> 01:08:34.439
Willie walk on the chocolate factory. You get nothing, you lose.

1203
01:08:34.880 --> 01:08:39.960
That's it. This is how it ends. And so there

1204
01:08:40.039 --> 01:08:45.279
must be consequences for what she did and what Greg did.

1205
01:08:45.880 --> 01:08:47.640
If you want to get that deep and talk about

1206
01:08:47.640 --> 01:08:50.239
the pope, you know in Genesis, whoever sheds human blood

1207
01:08:50.319 --> 01:08:52.479
by humans, shall their blood be shed? I know that

1208
01:08:52.600 --> 01:08:55.239
that's the Old Testament, but I will say this. I

1209
01:08:55.239 --> 01:08:57.079
don't want to go any further into it. But I

1210
01:08:57.119 --> 01:09:00.399
am so thankful for people who oppose me on this.

1211
01:09:00.520 --> 01:09:02.399
My listeners included. I have people who are against the

1212
01:09:02.399 --> 01:09:05.680
death penalty, and I say this in complete earnest. I

1213
01:09:05.720 --> 01:09:09.479
am so thankful for people who are against the death penalty,

1214
01:09:09.560 --> 01:09:13.399
even though I am for it, because having someone disagree

1215
01:09:13.399 --> 01:09:17.319
with me doesn't scare me, and deep down inside I

1216
01:09:17.359 --> 01:09:21.199
can truly appreciate what those people on the other side

1217
01:09:21.199 --> 01:09:25.720
of the aisle are fighting for whenever they fight in

1218
01:09:25.720 --> 01:09:29.880
this regard, if we all agreed that death should be

1219
01:09:29.920 --> 01:09:31.960
the answer, it would almost just be too dark of

1220
01:09:32.000 --> 01:09:35.159
a place. I know that's odd and contradictory, but it's

1221
01:09:35.199 --> 01:09:37.600
the opposition that keeps us in check. It's the opposition

1222
01:09:37.600 --> 01:09:40.680
that keeps me in check, keeps me pondering and thinking

1223
01:09:40.960 --> 01:09:43.279
if this is the way that we should punish in

1224
01:09:43.319 --> 01:09:46.520
the country, Is this the way or should we consider

1225
01:09:47.199 --> 01:09:50.920
something else? I do continue to think about it, but

1226
01:09:50.960 --> 01:09:53.720
I will tell you I also continue to look from

1227
01:09:53.760 --> 01:09:56.760
the lens or through the lens of the loss of

1228
01:09:56.800 --> 01:09:59.520
a victim, while people on the other side of the

1229
01:09:59.560 --> 01:10:02.760
aisle are looking through the lens of the offender's potential

1230
01:10:03.039 --> 01:10:05.319
to change. And either way you look at it, I

1231
01:10:05.359 --> 01:10:08.840
think there's beauty on both sides of it. But I

1232
01:10:08.880 --> 01:10:11.680
stand for the fact that some people I don't think

1233
01:10:11.800 --> 01:10:15.199
deserve to walk this planet. So let's fast forward six

1234
01:10:15.279 --> 01:10:18.520
months to September the thirtieth of twenty fifteen, and her

1235
01:10:18.600 --> 01:10:23.560
second execution date was set to proceed. Now, I want

1236
01:10:23.560 --> 01:10:27.479
to point out Doug died alone, with no time for goodbyes.

1237
01:10:27.520 --> 01:10:29.760
He didn't get to kiss his children, he didn't get

1238
01:10:29.760 --> 01:10:32.239
to hug them. He didn't get to tell his parents goodbye,

1239
01:10:32.279 --> 01:10:36.399
farewell to his friends, nothing. He got nothing, but Kelly

1240
01:10:36.760 --> 01:10:40.760
got to address the room and give her final words.

1241
01:10:41.159 --> 01:10:43.600
Her kids were not there because they were actively in

1242
01:10:43.640 --> 01:10:46.359
that moment doing some last minute petitioning to try to

1243
01:10:46.399 --> 01:10:50.079
stop her execution. But whenever Kelly was led into the room,

1244
01:10:50.319 --> 01:10:53.880
her final words were recorded, and I love you, set.

1245
01:11:00.159 --> 01:11:03.159
Let my kids go. Everyone else, sing an amazing grace

1246
01:11:06.800 --> 01:11:12.399
and tell the Gissan Dana family, I am so sorry

1247
01:11:12.680 --> 01:11:16.720
that amazing man lost his life because of me. And

1248
01:11:16.800 --> 01:11:19.199
if I could take it back, if this were change it,

1249
01:11:20.279 --> 01:11:23.840
I would have done it a long time ago. But

1250
01:11:23.960 --> 01:11:27.680
this fu and I just hope they find peace, and

1251
01:11:27.760 --> 01:11:29.439
I hope they find some happiness.

1252
01:11:30.439 --> 01:11:33.840
God bless you hearing that. I will say that executions

1253
01:11:33.880 --> 01:11:37.640
aren't easy, but I will also add I do respect

1254
01:11:37.640 --> 01:11:40.760
the fact that she did finally take ownership and apologize

1255
01:11:40.880 --> 01:11:44.399
to the Guts and Danner family, but I apologies are

1256
01:11:44.399 --> 01:11:47.079
too late. At this point, the Guts and Danner family

1257
01:11:47.199 --> 01:11:50.720
had understandably already released a statement saying as the murderer,

1258
01:11:51.039 --> 01:11:53.720
she's been given more rights and opportunity over the last

1259
01:11:53.760 --> 01:11:56.800
eighteen years than she ever afforded to Doug, who again

1260
01:11:57.199 --> 01:12:00.680
is the real victim here. She had no mercy, gave

1261
01:12:00.760 --> 01:12:04.279
him no rights, no choices, nor the opportunity to live

1262
01:12:04.560 --> 01:12:08.760
his life. Kelly Gissendaner was then strapped to the table

1263
01:12:09.079 --> 01:12:11.880
and the drugs began pumping through her veins. She was

1264
01:12:11.920 --> 01:12:16.279
pronounced dead by lethal injection at twelve twenty one am,

1265
01:12:16.720 --> 01:12:20.239
and that made Kelly the last woman to be executed

1266
01:12:20.640 --> 01:12:25.720
in the US to date. Well, okay, technically, some people

1267
01:12:25.800 --> 01:12:28.520
might argue with me that that's not accurate because there

1268
01:12:28.560 --> 01:12:31.239
was an offender by the name of Amber McLaughlin who

1269
01:12:31.319 --> 01:12:33.800
was executed in twenty twenty three. But Amber was born

1270
01:12:33.880 --> 01:12:36.479
a little boy named Scott. So I'll just let you

1271
01:12:36.520 --> 01:12:38.760
decide if you want to claim that one or not.

1272
01:12:38.920 --> 01:12:41.600
I don't care you, do you, But I'm just giving

1273
01:12:41.600 --> 01:12:44.000
you all the info. But I will tell you this,

1274
01:12:44.239 --> 01:12:47.680
if you've been a listener for a long time, there's

1275
01:12:47.760 --> 01:12:51.279
another female that is already set to be executed in

1276
01:12:51.359 --> 01:12:54.960
less than a month from this recording, And I bet

1277
01:12:55.159 --> 01:12:57.560
you know her name if you're up to date on episodes,

1278
01:12:57.800 --> 01:13:03.920
does Amber Pike ring bells? Well, Miss ma'am is now

1279
01:13:04.039 --> 01:13:07.880
tentatively scheduled to meet her maker in September of twenty

1280
01:13:08.199 --> 01:13:11.279
twenty six. She will be the next female and will

1281
01:13:11.279 --> 01:13:14.039
be the last one after it happens to be executed

1282
01:13:14.039 --> 01:13:16.479
in the United States, so I will keep you updated

1283
01:13:16.479 --> 01:13:19.960
on that. It's big. Women being executed isn't common. But

1284
01:13:20.479 --> 01:13:23.960
after carving a pentagram and her poor victim's body, let's

1285
01:13:24.039 --> 01:13:27.000
just see how well she takes her own upcoming demise.

1286
01:13:27.279 --> 01:13:30.359
And I know this is probably tacky, but it'd be

1287
01:13:30.359 --> 01:13:32.680
fun to take bets on how she behaves, because my

1288
01:13:32.800 --> 01:13:35.279
money is on her acting like a totally indignant and

1289
01:13:35.359 --> 01:13:39.399
mouthy shrew once she's strapped down. But we shall see.

1290
01:13:39.479 --> 01:13:44.079
Maybe we'll do a Facebook Facebook fake bet or something

1291
01:13:44.159 --> 01:13:46.600
like that and we'll see what we think is going

1292
01:13:46.680 --> 01:13:49.479
to happen there. But as for anyone who would commit

1293
01:13:49.760 --> 01:13:53.680
an atrocity, any atrocity upon another to the level that

1294
01:13:53.720 --> 01:14:00.039
both Kelly and Amber have, the constitution is clear and

1295
01:14:00.079 --> 01:14:03.479
the death penalty is legal so long as it is proportional.

1296
01:14:03.920 --> 01:14:07.880
And there is no doubt that Kelly Gisander was responsible

1297
01:14:07.880 --> 01:14:11.199
for her husband's death, because without her, Doug would still

1298
01:14:11.239 --> 01:14:14.399
be alive today. She didn't complete the act herself, but

1299
01:14:14.520 --> 01:14:18.640
it was her plan that was put to action. It's

1300
01:14:18.720 --> 01:14:22.479
like a builder using an architect's house plans but then

1301
01:14:22.479 --> 01:14:25.199
claiming the architect had nothing to do with the project.

1302
01:14:25.960 --> 01:14:29.199
That can't be so. Without the plan, there is no house,

1303
01:14:30.079 --> 01:14:33.159
and certainly not one to the exact specs that would

1304
01:14:33.199 --> 01:14:36.960
benefit someone the way that Doug's murder benefited both of

1305
01:14:37.000 --> 01:14:39.960
his killers. Kelly may have outsourced the murder, but not

1306
01:14:40.039 --> 01:14:42.840
the consequences, because those, my dear, aren't something that you

1307
01:14:42.880 --> 01:14:45.600
can subcontract. Greg may have been the one to swing

1308
01:14:45.600 --> 01:14:48.279
the knife, but in this story, there is no doubt

1309
01:14:48.359 --> 01:14:50.720
that Kelly remains the ultimate backstabber.
