Hey, y'all, it's kJ You're back for another episode of Unspeakable. I've had the best day, you can probably telling my voice how upbeat I am. I took some kids on a field trip today. We went to our local jail and then we went to the shooting range and we just had the best time learning about law enforcement and everything, you know, all the cool hands on things that we do and some handcuffing and all that, and just I had a blast.

1:18 And then I have the joy now of coming in here to record for you. And this episode I've worked really hard on. It is. It's one with a lot of twist and turns, and I hope that you're ready, because this is going to be a goodie. I want you to come with me though, to South Carolina back in twenty sixteen. And I don't know about you. When I think of South Carolina, I think of forests and wildlife. That's just what comes to mind when I think about that state. And matter of fact, it's true, right because forests cover more than sixty seven percent of that state, making the lob Lolly Pine one of the state's biggest natural resources. And actually best my best guy friend. He lived on lab b Lolly here locally, and I always thought that name was so goofy. I'm like, who names a street La Blallie? Until I realized it was a tree.

2:05 So I guess my ignorance showed there. But out in South Carolina, that was the home to Kayla Brown and Charlie Carver. Both of them were born in the eighties and they were in their early thirties whenever this case took place. Kayla and Charlie, I'll let you know, were not of great means, and they weren't from high society or anything of that nature, and they certainly did not live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. But they were happy. They had been friends for about a year or so and they started to casually date for a short while, but now they were officially exclusive and they felt strongly enough for one another that they decided that they were going to move in together. So they settled into an apartment, and while they shared no children together, they did have a little dog his name was Romeo, that they just loved and doted after. Kayla with her dyed red hair and her green eyes. So something in the kind smile of Charlie, he just he's one of those people when you see him, his smile is kind.

3:07 You see something wonderful when he smiles. And he always was making her laugh and bringing joy to her life. She had always been a confident person. She did pageants whenever she was a child growing up, and she had grown into a very motivated woman. But Charlie did a little something special for her that made her just made her feel just up there on this pedestal. Something just different about him whenever he entered her life. She was outgoing, She had a close friend group. They loved to hang out with one another. They really enjoyed each other's company, but Charlie was her safe spot and Kayla loved him. They were both very trusting people too, very kind hearted people, and they went well together. It was just a good combo. Now, Charlie had brown hair and he wore glasses. He was sporting this brown beard and this easy going spirit about him everywhere that he went. Now, I will tell you this.

4:04 Charlie was technically still married, but he was estranged from his wife, Nicole. Charlie and Nicole had met on an online dating site and they eventually did get married. This was back in twenty fourteen, but things soured. It didn't last long, and although they were estranged, they still had two children together and they were doing their best to co parent both of these children that were a product of that relationship. Charlie worked as a printing machine operator at First Quality Tissue, and this was the job he took after he had completed his duties in the Army National Guard. Shout out to everybody, by the way, who is in our armed forces and in our National Guard, serving in whatever capacity that you may work. My hat is off to you. That is the ultimate for me, is someone who would go out and protect our country and take that oath. So he did that. Charlie did it, and then he ca back home and he started his civilian life working for the First Quality Tissue. He did have interest in law enforcement when he was younger. He thought that was a path he might should take, and he even participated in the Anderson County Sheriff's Office Explore Cadet program, which is basically a program for youth that are interested in think that they want to take the next step when they get old enough to become law enforcement, and they go do some hands on training and they learn the ins and outs of law enforcement. So he was a part of that program whenever he was younger, but it just didn't pan out that that would be a law enforcement career would be the path that he took.

5:34 He went military instead. But as an adult, he loved playing pool and he was a member of some local pool leagues that he liked to go and play in. He also loved to write. He was a writer and he was good at it. From everything I've read and that I understand, he loved to write books and he was actually in the process of writing his fifth mystery novel when he and Caleb met, So he did a lot of writing. Now Todd had this full time job. But he was always willing to go with Kayla and do odd jobs here and there whenever it was time to make a little extra money. And specifically they would go together and they would clean homes. These homes were ones that were being put up for sale that maybe were newer and needed to be cleaned out, or even if it was a home that was just about to be sold and needed to be spruced up, that's what they would go do. Now, Todd Colehep was a local realtor and he had contacted Kayla about doing some work for him, and she had already done four or five homes in the recent months and clean those for him.

6:38 And we know realtors, right, they're moving houses and they need them cleaned and they need people to help do that, and so this was a typical thing to occur. Now. Charlie always accompanied Kyla on these jobs because he didn't want to buy yourself in a home in an unknown area. He wanted someone to be able to stay with her so that she was safe. This go around, when they were going to clean this house, it was exactly the same. They would go to Todd's house, they would go get the keys for the property that they were going to go clean. Usually he would give them the address, they would put that into their GPS. Then they would go and they would clean wherever they were cleaning, and then when they were done, they would go back to Todd's house, give them the keys, and he would immediately cut the check forum right then. It had been a typical job and they had done this multiple times. But on August thirty first, both Kayla and Charlie went to Todd's home to go pick up the keys to the property that he needed them to clean on this day. The thing was that this was not a property that he was going to be putting up for sale. It was actually owned by Todd. So he did give them the keys to say go clean it, but he said I'm going to drive there too, because I have to unlock some gates before you can get into the property. And he wasn't willing to give out the code for the gate to them, but he would give them the keys to the property once they got inside the gate. So they got there, Todd got out and he unlocked that gate just like he was supposed to and opened it up.

7:58 Charlie and Kayla we drove through first and then Charlie and Kayla followed through in their vehicle behind him. Todd then got back out of his car, locked the gate, shut it, locked it, and then they continued down the road to the back to where the house was that they were going to be cleaning. So they drove about a half a mile back on this property when they came upon an area of a couple of buildings that were right there. There was a two story building which was really a large garage and two level. Each level was a different color. The bottom was a light brown cinder block style wall, and then the top was ten siding. There was also off to the right a small garden like garden shed with that you'd store you know, containers or whatever you needed for gardening in that. And then this there was another building kind of off to the side of that. And this was in a rural area, and like I just told you, it was away from the main road, but very nice. It was orderly, it was kept, it was maintained. Today though they were not actually going to be cleaning this building, Todd needed them to go clean some underbrush on these trails that he had created, and he said it was kind of growing back and so he needed that brush trimmed back. So they all got there. They were chit chatting about what was going to happen, and then they walked into this large garage. So the large garage had a big garage door on the front of it and then a regular door on the left hand side of the building. So

9:29 they go in. Todd's given them some hedge clippers and some tools and things that they're gonna need. He asked them, Hey, y'all need a bottle of water. Great, He handed them both a bottle of water, and then they walked out of that side door to head to the property that needed to be cleaned. Todd forgot something though, said hey, just hang on a second. So they stood right outside the door holding hands and they were talking with one another when Todd returned about three minutes later and then started to walk out and show them to the job site. Now, Kayla was supposed to have dinner with her girlfriends that night, but as night fell, she no called, and she no showed, No one could get in touch with her. So these girlfriends did what I think a lot of us would do, and they called the one person that we would call in our times of worry, and I know you didn't just say the police. I know that's not what you just thought to yourself, because you are wrong. It was mama.

10:28 That is who they called. When something happens and your friend's not answering, you call her mama. So whenever they get Mom on the phone and they're explaining, look, she didn't show up, she's not answering the phone. Her mom thought that they were joking at first, they had that kind of relationship like, Ohkaylea when it's the phone. But she realized after they talked for a minute that this was not a joke and that they really really no, really, she's not answering the phone, and we cannot get a hold of her, and we definitely had plans for tonight. So they jump in the car and they ride over to the apartment of Kayla and Charlie. And that's whenever Mom says, uh oh, because Kayla's car was at the apartment.

11:09 But they knock on the door and Kayla, Charlie nobody's answer in the phone, the car is there. This is a problem. She couldn't have gone anywhere without it. So Mom then jumped on the phone and she called police. So the police show up. They arrive at the apartment, They look around and there was nothing external that showed any signs of a problem. Once they got inside the apartment, it looked like people lived there. It looked like someone had just left the apartment and then expected to return. They looked in the bathroom and all around. All of the personal items for both of them were still in the home. And these were things that you would expect to be gone if somebody ran off. Their suitcases were there, their personal items were there. I mean, hell, their dog was there. Romeo was there. They're not going to run off and leave Romeo. And to point out two, Romeo had no food or water, which wasn't even close to his normal treatment that he would have received. They would have never not fed or watered this dog. So the police, first of all, and we've heard this a million times, because they were adults, the police first had to rule out that they didn't want to not be found, had they run off together and gone off on a lover's trip or whatever. But everyone knew that this was not the case, and it wasn't even their character at all, even if they wanted to go on a spur of the moment trip they're two grown ass adults. All they would do is call somebody and say, hey, we're going on a trip. There was no reason to not answer the phone. They didn't need to run off. It just

12:41 didn't fit the description of what was going on at this point in their lives. So the investigation into their whereabouts would go on for days and then weeks, and the two just had up and vanished without a trait, a trace, which we know doesn't happen. Guys, this doesn't happen. People don't vanish. And I hate when people say that, oh, they just vanished. That makes it seem like mythical almost. People don't vanish. Something happens to them, that's what happens. And so after two months goes by and no one has heard a peep from the two of them or seen them. The police were kind of thinking more along the lines of we might be recovering bodies instead of finding them alive. But Kayla's mama refused to give up hope, as any good mama would. She was focused on finding her Kayla, and sometimes she even said that people would prepare her or try to prepare her. Look, you know, Kyla might not be coming home. You need to prepare yourself.

13:53 And while while these people may have had good intentions by telling her this and trying to prepare her heart, because it's just not good after the first forty eight hours that it's just not looking good. Now two months have gone by, maybe you should be prepared that they might find her body. And when that would happen, Kayla's mama would look at them and very matter of factly say, and since that's your way of thinking, do not ever speak to me again. Whatever you feel about that, that's up to you. It's your prerogative. But it was her daughter that was missing, and she wasn't giving up, so she did not want to hear from other people who made it sound like they had given up. And I don't blame her. It's her baby girl, and she's out there somewhere and she's gonna find her. So while I believe in the power of a good detective, I'm telling you there are some excellent detectives out there that if anything ever happens to me, I want them looking for me, and they know who they are. I know them personally.

14:49 I believe in the power of a good detective. I also believe in the power of a good mama. And y'all know it. You've been listening to me long enough. I believe in the power a mama. Can I get an amen, especially one who's pissed off or scared because she knows no bounds. There's nothing that will ever get in the way of a mama, a real mama. So she started to think about scenarios of what could have possibly happened to her daughter, but also Charlie. What would make sense that they would up and not return. And at one point she'd be lying if she said that she didn't wonder if maybe Charlie somehow was involved in the disappearance of her daughter, But that always would kind of just flash out of her mind, though, because all she could think about was that Charlie had always been a gentleman, always been kind, always thought about Kayla. It just was something Even when she tried to make that make sense in some way, she couldn't. She just couldn't believe that it just didn't fit. And that's when her mom really started looking to Kayla's social media and on Facebook, she saw that Kayla and Charlie had been talking about doing odd jobs and cleaning houses and mentioning out there on the book of Face. You know, if you need a property cleaned, we clean properties if you need this or that or these odd jobs were taken on more jobs,

16:20 and Mom knew about this in the past when she was talking about it with her daughter. But Kayla usually went with someone to do the jobs, like I told you, and she only did jobs of either friends or people that she personally knew, or she would do work for people that personal friends would vouch for, so she didn't stray out into just complete strangerville to go start cleaning these properties. Kayla was a trusting girl, but she was smart, and she was very loving, but she was also careful. She was not just kind of floating in the wind out you're just going wherever to make a buck. She really thought about what she was doing and wanted to be safe and Charlie, if he was with her, Charlie would have defended her with everything that he had if something would have gone wrong, and he never would have just left her. Kayla's mamma said, Charlie would not leave her, it wasn't his character. There had to be more to this, So at the same time, Charlie's mama was beside herself looking for her son. Where is my son? Where could he have gone? The very last communication that Charlie's mama had with him was that she had texted him to tell him his favorite actor, who was Gene Wilder, had died.

17:44 She sent him a message, Oh no, son, you know your favorite actor died, and Charlie texted her back. It was one word he texted back, damn clearly bombed out to hear about the passing of his favorite character on teev. But after that one worded text of damn came through, there was nothing. I'm talking radio silence, so to speak. He never texted her back again. And Charlie was responsible. Charlie was a very responsible worker and son. He would go work his twelve hour shifts at that printing division of his job, and he always showed up. He was reliable, and he was one of those guys who was a jokester.

18:31 I think I told you all. He always was making Caleb laugh and she loved that about him. He was a jokester and he would tell people, man, I guess I just don't know what I'm doing at my job. Because when he got home or when he would leave work, he always had ink on his hands or on his clothes, and he would always joke, well, I don't know what the hell I'm doing, that's why I'm covered in ink. And I think that's cute. I like that. He just wasn't the person who wouldn't just show up to work and he wasn't going to work. He was also very close with his mama. They even shared a bank account. Still, he and his mom wouldn't have gone without talking. It's just that's not their style. He's going to talk to his mom. So when Kayla wasn't answering her calls and Charlie wasn't answering his phone calls, that's when Charlie's mama called the manager of the apartment complex and said, I need you to go check on them. They are in Unit seventeen. They're not answering phone calls. I need you to check and see if that if they're okay. Well, this is about the same time that Kayla's mama was doing all of this too. Obviously they weren't at the apartment.

19:34 So Charlie's mom, just like Kayla's, went and filed a missing person report, and when she showed up, she was carrying with her his senior portrait from high school so they would have a photo of him. And I know, I say things struck strike me all the time, but this did it struck me. I kind of sat back whenever I read that, and I said, bless this woman's heart, because, y'all, she brought the photo of her little boy in high school while the rest of us see a grown man. And you know, I'm gonna post pictures when the rest of us see a grown man with a beard, and we're looking for a grown man. This woman shows up at the police department with his high school photo because through her eyes, it's her son no matter what, it doesn't matter how old he is, and that high school photo was what she brought, and it hurt my heart to think about her doing so. So police had chased down leads from Charlie's family as well as Kayle's family.

20:35 They chased leads until they were blue in the face. They had also gone to Charlie's work. They visited there and had them pull surveillance video because it was they had cameras everywhere at his work. They watched the video and the last known sighting of Charlie on camera was when he left work on August thirtieth at seven thirty five pm, which was about thirty minutes after his shift ended, and he was talking on the phone and as he walked out, got in his truck or in his car, and he drove off. The only next proof of life finding, if you want to call it, that was the next day whenever he used his debit card at a McDonald's. But no one had heard or spoken to him since.

21:19 And this would prove really really important because this establishes the timeline of nones and you've got to have a starting point. So we know he left work and then we know that his debit card was used at a McDonald's. Well, Kayla's good friend, her name was Leah Miller. Kayla's friend, Leah helped to solidify that same timeline with Kayla as well and what she was doing, because Leah verified that the last time she spoke with Kayla was also August thirtieth. Kayla had told Leah that she was going into the Greenville area and that she would be driving home. So the next morning, Kyla texted her at six oh six am and said are you awake? Leah didn't respond immediately she it was a little bit later. I guess she was sleeping. It was six o'clock in the morning. But later on, whenever she tried to answer her or would call, Cayla never answered. And it wasn't for lack of trying.

22:15 She had called, she had texted, and this girl was a good friend. She even drove by Kayla's apartment and left a note on her car in case she was thinking, well, maybe she's sick and she just doesn't want to be bothered, or she can't get up, you know, she has you know, she's vomiting or something. So she even left a note on her car that said call me. I can't get in touch with you. But no response ever came. And just like Kayla's mom had mentioned, Leah told the police we had plans for a barbecue that night, but Cayla never followed up. She never showed up. Something is not right. So it was now months later. It's a hot September at the point that I'm talking about, and both of the missing couple's families were in major distress by this point.

23:05 Police had this timeline that I just laid out for you, but nothing else, I mean nothing, cold, dead in the tracks, nothing to go off of. So friends and family said, well, if you don't have a lead to follow, we're still going to do our part. And they were putting up flyers everywhere all over town. They were physically going themselves and searching tirelessly for their missing friends. No one knew or saw anything. Everywhere that they went, no one knew anything. And put yourself in their shoes for a second, and imagine how that must feel. Nobody knows anything. That would drive me insane. Someone has to know something, someone has to know something. But no leads would come. And the flyers looked the usual flyer that you would expect to see it, says Kayla five foot seven, one hundred and thirty five pounds, dyed red hair, green eyes, Charlie five foot eleven, one hundred and eighty pounds, brown hair, a beard, glasses.

24:05 They even went so far as to describe his tattoos. He had a couple of them, most notable on his back. He had a rebel flag tattoo and they also put on there. Charlie had a two thousand and two white Pontiac Grand Prix, and that car was missing, and it had been missing since the couple went missing, so they were believed to be in that car together whenever they went missing. So in the meantime, police want to speak to everybody and that includes good batter indifferent, and so they went to go speak to Charlie's estranged wife, Nicole. So while they're talking to Nicole, Nicole paints a picture that maybe is a little different than what I expected, but this is what Nicole said. She said that Charlie had started dating Kayla in May, but that she didn't officially leave Charlie until July. So take from that whatever you want, but they weren't in the best place in terms of their relationship. But she did say that she had been looking at Charlie's location because she had a laptop or she had Charlie's laptop, and so by looking into that laptop to see what he was doing for whatever reason she was doing that for, she told police that she believed he and Kayla may be in Myrtle Beach.

25:21 Now I'm not sure exactly why she thought that. I don't have direct knowledge as to what she saw that made her think that, but that is what she shared with police. So they did follow that lead, but it turned up absolutely nothing. So by October eighteenth of twenty sixteen, detectives had been working the case. At this point, this was a month and a half in with really nothing to follow. So police did what they could in term of electronics because that would really be the only thing they could grasp at at this point to try to maybe figure something out about their last communications, and this would give them there are only real thread of hope that they would have to cling to, and this would come by way of the tower where Kayla's phone last pinged oflf of. That location was in Woodrooff, which is a nearby city to where Kayla and Charlie lived. It wasn't that far so Woodroff was located in upstate South Carolina, and that area has this really small town feel. It's got quick access to that to this nearby airport. It's thirty minutes from Greenville, South Carolina, so small town charm.

26:35 But there's also vast acreage in this area. So detectives decided that maybe they should go and speak with detectives from that area about the couple's last pinged location, which showed Woodroof on August the thirty first. Now tips had come in as usual about the missing couple. And I don't want to be Debbie Downer here, but a lot of times people call in and what they give you is absolute nonsense. It has nothing to do with anything, and it's just wasting time and resources. But one tip that came out seemed awfully specific, really specific, and in a very tragic way, because they call her called in and claimed they had heard that the couple had been buried on a one hundred acre property in Woodruff. That's pretty damn specific as far as what happened to them.

27:31 It's not oh, I think I saw her at a gas station. They're saying they're dead and buried. So this seems not only really specific, but to be honest, kind of generic at the same time, because one hundred acres is a large, random ass area to look for, where would you even start. I mean, needle in a haystack is kind of where we're at here. So detectives decided to work smarter, not harder, and they went and they searched through property ownership records and they specific narrated down to who owned one hundred acres. Huh, right, that was pretty good. I don't even know that I would have thought of that maybe I would have. I don't know, but I don't think I would have. So by chance, they found that there was only one one hundred acre property within two miles of the tower in which the phone had last pinged, and that property was owned by none other than Todd Coalheb. So interestingly, warrants were signed about this same time that they are figuring all of this out. Warrants were signed to grant access to search the Facebook history for the missing couple, and as the detectives were searching through Kala's communications, they saw a few messages between Kayla and Todd Coleheb, so this kind of was making sense basically. He The communications though, were very professional.

28:55 It was I'm looking for someone to come clean up some brush on my property and I'll pay you to do it, and that they had some experience doing this together. So detectives drove to the property to check it out. But when they got there, they were met by that same electric gait and chain link fencing that surrounded the property that I had mentioned earlier in the story. There was also signage too that clearly warned that trespassing would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and this isn't odd. I don't want to make that seem like it's odd. I mean, people protect their property with fencing all the time. But to see further into the property this would require more paperwork on behalf of police.

29:37 But also before they would go try to get some warrants signed, they decided that they wanted to do some research on the owner of the property. This Todd Colehep. You never want to go knocking on a door to speak with someone without knowing at least who you're dealing with while you're doing your investigation, and a little research on mister Colehep revealed the following He was forty five years old, he was single, and he was an accomplished real estate broker in the area. So in two thousand and six is when he had gotten his real estate license, and then later on, as he got the grip of things, he opened col Hepn Associates real Estate, and the employees they liked him. He was known to dominate conversations whenever you would talk to him, and he was someone that almost irritatingly, but he would get caught up on the minute details of stories, specifically whenever he was talking about two things he really loved. He loved airplanes and he loved weapons, and he liked to talk a lot about both of these topics. So that's not much to go one. Okay, you like airplanes, you like weapons. You owned some property, and you're a a big real estate guy. Okay, well great, but there was He not only owned the one hundred acre property, but he also owned a very nice home in a nice neighborhood as well. So he wasn't broke.

30:56 It wasn't like he was some homeless vagrant running around. He was an established guy. But there was one other detail about him that could not be ignored, and that was whenever they found out that Todd was a convicted sex offender. But this was not from his adult time, like a time as an adult. This was from his teenage years when he was younger, but still it was something that kind of was an interesting flag to check out. So this all started back in nineteen eighty. To give you a little background on this, Todd had been referred to a mental health facility for his behavioral problem, specifically in school, but also at home. He was having a lot of behavioral problems. He was eight or nine years old whenever his mother was unable to control him, which is crazy to me. I will beat that ass if you think that you're gonna get crazy at eight or nine years old in my house. But he had problems.

31:55 So his biological father had been absent from his life since he was two months old. He did not have a relationship with him, and then one day, out of the blue, the biological father shows up on Todd's mother's doorstep, like, hey, I'm back. You know what you went out for milk and forgot where you live for all these years. I don't know what that was about, but when he showed up, Todd got excited that his dad was back, even though he didn't know him, and he wanted to go with him. I want to go live with my dad. I want to go live with my dad. Well, clearly his mother was not willing to let that happen, and so in order to make Todd want to be excited to stay home and be with his mom and kind of you don't need to run off with your dad that you don't know, that woman went out and bought him all new bedroom furniture to try to make him excited and to enjoy his home. And to really like where he was.

32:42 So what did Todd do in response to that? Well, he promptly took a claw hammer to all of this brand new furniture his mother just spent the money on and he destroyed it, so things would only get worse. She was struggling with Todd constantly, and she did side finally, Okay, look, i'm gonna let you go live with your dad for one school year. I'm gonna let you go and we're gonna try it out. That would turn out to be a disaster because his dad then decided that he didn't need to be supervised all the time. So his dad left him alone for three days with no supervision as a fifteen year old. And this is going to be a huge mistake on his part, because fifteen year old Todd then went into his dad's room and found his gun and he went outside, and that's whenever he took the gun and he put it to his fourteen year old neighbor's head and then forced her to walk back home to his house at gunpoint. And once he got that little girl inside, he covered her mouth with duct tape and then he tied up her hands. He completely immobilized her, and then once he had her where he wanted her, he raped her. When he was done, he told her, if you say anything, if you call the police, if you do anything other than leave this house and be quiet, not only am I gonna kill your siblings, But he put a knife to her throat and he

34:13 threatened her. So this little girl, fourteen years old, you can tell you, as you can imagine, had a lot of trauma happened her in a very short amount of time. And this little girl, I'm gonna let you know, is my hero. And you know why. It's because she had did leave and then she would do exactly what that psalm bitch told her not to do, and she went and told exactly what happened to her. Todd was then arrested and then he eventually went to trial. Now, Todd, why did you rape this girl? What made you? What would possibly make you think that that was an appropriate behavior? Well, Todd was upset because he said that the neighbor girl, he had a big crush on her, but she had a crush on one of his friends and would only friend zone him. So that upset him and that's why he raped her. Unbelievable, So the court records during all of this time show a very disturbed adolescent. He did things like threatening to kill his mom. He would kill his pets. He poured bleach in his goldfish bowl when he didn't want it anymore. He wanted a hamster, so he killed his other pets. He stabbed a young girl in the leg with scissors on the school bus whenever she made him mad. He got caught locking a boy a young boy in a dog cage and was found rolling the cage with the kid in it. Matter of fact,

35:45 when he was finally put on trial, one of his neighbors literally called him a devil on a chain before he was sentenced. And that's pretty it's pretty bold to be calling a kid a devil on a chain. So, although he was originally charged with sexual assault and kidnapping, of course you know how this went. He was allowed to accept a plea bargain to kidnapping. And I will tell you though, this wasn't before the judge noted that she was rather disgusted because it was a quote that said Todd had the benefit of six years of intervention in his fifteen years of life. But clearly all of this had resulted in abysmal failure. So I mean since he was eight years old, they had been trying to get him right and nothing was working. There were hundreds of pages of records on him, and overall the records found him to be emotionally disturbed at minimum, and they also noted when he was interviewed about by a psychologist about the rape and all of this, he showed zero remorse and he had explosive anger issues. So, after all it was said and done, he was since to fifteen years in prison. He served his time in an Arizona prison and then he was released in two thousand and one.

37:06 So while Todd came across on social media and to people that he was, you know, friends with in the community, or that he sold houses to and all that, while he came across on social media as a happy, go lucky guy and a very successful realtor and business owner, there really was a dark side to Todd as a teenager. Who knows. Look, maybe prison had set him straight, maybe he had made something of himself, because he had no other sex crime convictions as an adult after his release, nor any criminal record that to speak of since his release. So he did this as when he was young. Maybe the prison time worked for him. Police weren't sure, so they wanted to speak with him in person and see if they could find out about this missing couple that they was last known to go work for him. They decided, though, before they would go talk to him, that they wanted to do a flyover of the property to see if they could maybe identify Charlie's missing white vehicle. So as vast as the property was, this was a large undertaking for them to do. They also wanted to see if there was anything suspicious that maybe they could see from the air, like I don't know, maybe a fresh dug grave or something along those lines, as morbid as that is.

38:26 And believe it or not, when they did the flyover, they did see cars on the property, but nothing specific about them could be identified, nothing really, except that none of the cars they saw were white, so they didn't see Charlie's car from the air. So a friend of Charlie's decided to reach out to police and let them know, look, something's up, because I'm starting to get strange messages from Charlie's Facebook account, And what made them strange was that Charlie was asking for money, and the reason he said he was asking for money, was that he was trying to get a drug to help him get off the other drugs. The problem that the friend had with this is that Charlie was never known to be a drug user by anyone. He had no history of being a drug user. So it just didn't sit right in the way he was speaking. It just didn't seem like it was Charlie. About that time, other people began coming forward as well, because they were receiving strange messages too, But none of the messages or the posts that were coming through on Facebook were coming from Kayla's account. They only came from Charlie's. This is the thing. Though, Charlie was a writer, if you remember what I told you, he was on his fifth novel, and in these writings that were Charlie supposedly posting, there were misspelled words, including his own name. At one point, he posted some strange stuff too, like oh he and Kayla had gotten married, and just some other things that were just so out of character

39:57 that what he was presenting online. So this would be something police would need to look into, obviously, and so they made note of that. Because there had been no speaking on the phone with Charlie. But now we've got messages coming through his social media account. Was he hacked? We don't know what's going on. On November third, detectives went and paid a visit to Todd's home, which was this nice two story house in a nice neighborhood. It was just a few miles down the road from that one hundred acre property that Kaylin and Charlie were supposed to go and clean. The house is very nice and neat, very orderly. It's a red brick home from top to bottom. It's got dark shutters, white trim. There's this attached garage positioned off to the right of the home, this big, big garage door. It's a really nice house, beautiful windows on the front of the home as well. So police walk up, they knock on the door, and after a short second, Todd opens the door and he answers it, Hey, what's going on? So he steps outside and he's dressed in shorts and a blue T shirt. He's got on flip flops and Todd was very cordial with police, but clearly he was surprised to have police on his doorstep.

41:06 And it wasn't just one cop, it was multiple officers. That were there. And he's a big man, maybe not in height, but in totality, broad shoulders, large chest. He was five foot ten, just shy of three hundred pounds, very solid dude that they were looking at. And so police explained to him that they had a search warrant for his home as well as his car. And when they were saying all of this, Todd's kind of looking at him, and they said, look, why don't we go ahead and step inside so we're not airing out all your business in the streets while your neighbors are right here. And so he's like, yeah, let please, let's go inside. This is you know, this is kind of embarrassing. So they go inside and he's standing there. He has this large dog named Taz, and he was like, oh my god, you know, I don't want to make my dog nervous because she's really cute, y'all. She's a boxer if you care, she looks like a boxer, super cute. But she peas whenever she gets nervous. And so he's holding on to her collar and everyone starts laughing because he's like, oh god, here's my Rootio's attack dog, you know, and she peas whenever she gets scared. Very nice guy, very cordial. And then he says, look, y'all are scaring the hell out of me, what is going on? Why are you here with a warrant? And so they explained, look, there's this missing couple. The last known location of them was with you, and so obviously that's why we're here. And he agreed, are you Kayla and Charlie? Yes? Absolutely, He said, I hired them to come and they had to clear some brush on my property. They showed up. I was giving them all the stuff for them to work on the property.

42:32 But shortly thereafter he said, Kayla only stayed for like an hour and then she left. But unbeknownst to Todd the detective that he was saying this too instantly, that just can't be true, or all of it can't be true. And that was because her phone was pinging much later off of that tower than Todd was claiming that Kayla had left. So the timing just wasn't making sense. Now Todd could have just had his timing off too, So they just continued to talk with him and ask questions. Y'ah, his body language, he's very calm, he's cordial, he's even making jokes and nothing about his behavior is wild or did he look like he was backed into a corner.

43:13 He wasn't sweating and shaking and anything. I mean, this just was a very calm guy, answering questions hesitantly at times because he's trying to figure out, I'm sure what's going on. But he's seated on a stool right there in his entryway of his home, and the detectives are talking to him, continuing to ask him questions, and at one point he got him, you know, a drink from his from his cup. As there he's listening very intently as they're speaking to him. And while all this exchange is going on, one of the investigator's phones begins blowing up call call, call, text, text, text, text, text, and all of this is while they're just standing there talking with Todd. So eventually he gets to a point that he just excuses himself and he steps outside to take the call. And so when he answers it and he says hello, he is immediately advised, look, we found Kayla, and you just, oh, no, what happened? Well, Kyla was gone for two months, right, so during that time, her cell phone obviously had died, so it wasn't like they still had a phone that they were able to keep pinging to see where it was. The technology used to find her, I want you to know, wasn't the typical GPS that most people think about whenever you're trying to locate a person. That only works if the location services are turned on. But Kyla's phone had been dead a very long time. She had been missing for sixty five days.

44:44 So what investigators had done was that they got her cell phone records, which indicated specifically which tower the phone last pinged off of or connected with up until the moment that it died. So basically, if you don't know this, your cell phone is running a hidden operating system that is constantly checking for the strongest signal. And as it's doing this, the towers every time it's pinging a tower, looking and searching for the strongest signal, the towers are keeping logs of this. So what they did was the law enforcement had to triangulate the phone's location based on the strength of the pings between towers. And I want to give a nod to police here because there was another issue with this strategy that they were using to try to find her phone. And that's because there was only two towers in the vicinity that her phone was pinging off of, so they couldn't fully triangulate. They just had this really general broadened area using those two towers, and they were really going off of just these generalities because the phone had been dead for so long, and they had completed that flyover if you remember that, and they saw a building when they did that flyover, So what they wanted to do was to search those buildings after the warrant was signed. That was whenever they were able to physically get on the property. Now that went on at the exact same time that they went to

46:15 talk to Todd, So you can understand how the timeframe is going. So what had happened to her? Had she gotten lost or was she hurt and then she died? You know what? How did How had they found her? Not even close? Are those guesses. So as they had entered the property and approached, they knew ahead of time that there was a lot of ground to cover, so there was multiple officers on the ground. They knew that this was likely a body recovery and that she could be anywhere on this on this one hundred acres. So as they approached those buildings, that's where they really wanted to start looking. They looked around for any obvious signs of a disturbance or places where a person might might would be. And so they're walking around the property and around these buildings when they began hearing a knocking noise coming from one of the buildings off to the side.

47:09 And it's a shipping container like on the like a cargo shipping container. Now this container is forest green and it's roughly the size of a school bus to kind of give you dimensions of it. And it blended in really well with its surroundings because it had been painted kind of like a deer stand at a hunting camp would It was green, but it had brown stripes throughout it and all that jazz on the front of it. It was locked and then it had a chain. Well, they didn't have a key to it, clearly, so they had to bring out power tools and they had to cut through all of this chain and this locking mechanism, and the lock wasn't easy to open either. I want y'all to know that they had a handheld saw and it spun and spun and sparks are flying the entire time trying to cut through the lock the chain. It took about five minutes for them to cut through that, and they kept having to stop in between. One officer has a mall and he's swinging this huge heavy mall trying to knock a portion of the door loose even though they're still trying to cut through it. Then the cutting resumed. You can continually hear the saw going. You can see all the sparks continue to fly. And after more time was spent cutting, multiple officers then appeared and they have these large bolt cutters and they're cutting at the door. This took a long I watched the entire video of them opening this container. It took nine minutes and thirteen seconds of consistent sawing, mauling, and cutting before

48:44 they were able to open the door. But they finally got it to where they can open it, and really worried about what may greet them once they open it. The officers backed up away from the door, minus the one that was opening the door. Once he opened that door, I mean just a crack or so five or more officers. You see them rush into that door, guns drawn and up and they're announcing Sheriff's office, Sheriff's office. And as that door opened, this hot, hot air spewed out from the inside, and it was dark. There was no electricity or anything, so they could not see up in the building. All they could feel was the heat whooshing out of the building. So they turn on their flashlights and they enter the container very cautiously, and they're back and forth, left to right with their flashlights, even with their guns up, going side to side, trying to figure out what is inside.

49:39 And they're walking past this shelving that they have to walk between, and it is full of rations of dry food, tons of ammunition. There was a cachet of firearms inside of this building. Some of those weapons, by the way, were inside a red metal toolbox like you would see in an automotive shop. You'd think there'd be but it was guns. And when they made it to the very back of the container, there is where they found Kayla. But she was alive, very limited in her movement, but she was alive. It was stunning. They could not believe they just came upon a live woman. But what they saw was unbelievable. She was shackled at the ankles, which were then connected to a chain which was then hooked to the corner of the building of one side of the building, as well as having a three foot piece of chain around her neck. And I'm not talking about a little bitty skinny chain like a little kid swing might be on. I'm talking about some chain chain around her neck, and then it had a lock on it with a padlock, and then that chain was connected to the opposite corner of the container to a hook in the wall. So she's chained like a damn dog to the back of this container in the dark, in the heat.

51:05 She's wearing gray sweatpants, she has on a long sleeved black shirt, black flip flops on her feet, and she's surrounded by unfinished plywall walls, and she's sitting atop a makeshift bed. And it's kind of interesting to me that I said chained like a damn dog, because that bed that she's laying on, it's really thin, but it's made of two large dog beds side by side, one gray and one red. She's got a brown blanket next to her, and there's a white pillow with no pillowcase. But those were her luxuries that she had in this building, and her bathroom was a bucket on the floor. It looked like she had put a trash bag over it or something, and it had a green air freshener sitting on top of it. If you look around, what was next to her?

51:53 And I don't want to take away from the horrificness of what the officers were seeing with this woman chained up like this, but if you looked around her, there was a camping lantern next to her, and then there was a set of plastic drawers, three plastic drawers, just like you would buy at Walmart. And inside those drawers there was a jar of Jiffy peanut butter, some crackers, and some bread. There was a book on top of those plastic drawers that I even zoomed in to look at it. It's called True Detectives, is the name of the book. That's ironic. But this had been her home for the last sixty five days, uncomfortably chained, scared out of her mind. But when she heard all of those people walking around that building, she decided it was time.

52:41 It was do or die, and she took the steps of trying to save herself by banging on those walls with the limited movement that she had, not knowing who would be coming inside her captor with more abuse to come, or her rescuers. But she knocked anyway. And he gives me goosebumps, because that is what courage is in the flesh. That is courage you to start beating on those walls and say, I'm in here, please help me, please come get me out of this building. And listening to these officers and the way that they speak, I mean, when I see a story unfold, it all is in color to me. Whenever I'm listening and I'm hearing and I'm tasting and I'm feeling what's going on. Because the first thing you hear out of that officer's mouth, are you okay, honey?

53:28 Are you okay, honey? And then another one says, it's okay, We're gonna help you. And this is a paramedic. He is gonna help you. Don't worry, We're gonna help you. When the police found that poor woman Kayla back there, they jumped. It was almost like you knew that they were trained and they were professionals, but they all jumped to free her. They all wanted their hands in there to try to help her. And they treated her with the utmost compassion and care the entire time that they made contact with her her hands because they had guns drawn when they first came in there, her hands were above her head in the air, and she never moved them the entire time. She was so terrified. Her hands were just up in the air. And one of the officers even says, you can put your hands down now, sweetheart.

54:15 You're okay. We're here to help you. And they were just so kind to her. You could hear their urgency in all of their voices talking to one another. One of them would say, you have a handcuff key? Who has a handcuff key? And they're all reaching into their shirts trying to grab their handcuff keys. Kayla was quiet but clearly relieved as all of this was going on and they're trying to uncuff her, and at the same time, there's an officer in there snapping pictures. The flash of that photography is going off while or doing all of this, because they're trying to get pictures of the evidence of what literally was going on, but not but trying to be quick, you know, not trying to make a more of a scene to her than they had to but doing their job. And one officer even speaks up to her about Charlie and says, hey, do you know where your buddy is? And she gives a very direct statement.

55:04 It's flat what she says, but you got to understand she's coming out of a serious trauma here. And when they say do you know what happened to your buddy, she just looks up and says, Todd colehep killed him. And then she said, and you have to listen really carefully to this. I would have played it for you, but the audio is really bad. You have to listen really carefully. And they're uncuffing her and she's just stated that Charlie was killed, and then she says, but he won't be easy to find with k nines because he put red Pepper all over him. Well, first of all, time out real quick. That's fucking dumb that he told her that, because red Pepper might temporarily like disrupt a dog doing their job, but these dogs are highly trained to search through tons of different shit, Pepper not being the worst of it whatsoever. Todd, but he had told her he used red pepper and so they wouldn't be able to find the bodies. I'm not saying that she is dumb for saying that. I'm saying Todd's dumb for telling her that. But she told them that Charlie would be hard to find. And when Cayla was removed from that container, she was met by the sheriff, And I want to tell you something. He could have said a million things to her whenever she was pulled out of that building, but his choice was to grab her hands and immediately he began to pray over her. And either way, no matter what had gone down, Cayla was alive. Thanked God,

56:35 and now she was going to be on her way to the hospital. So understand, the detective is just learning all of this standing outside of the doorstep of Todd Coleheb's house. He's three feet away, so stunned by what he had just learned, the detective roger that he understands exactly what he's just been told. He goes back into the house and Todd's sitting there sipping on some coffee, slurping it and talking to the detectives, and that detective looks at him and says, look, we've been executing a warrant on your property. Since we've been here and we have Kayla. She's alive on your property, Todd, And his response is excuse me, feigning surprise, excuse me. So it was at that point that it was explained very matter of factly that not only had Caleb been found and was she alive, but she was talking. They knew that he had murdered Charlie right in front of her. And when he was confronted with this information, Todd's lack of reaction said everything. He just looked at them. He didn't jump back or what are you talking about. He just looked at them, and that's when he was told you're under arrest. He was handcuffed and he was taken straight to the local jail. So at this time, Kayla was still talking to the investigators as the ambulance drove away from the property with her in it, and she was

58:07 continuing to talk, and she told her rescuers that she hadn't seen her boyfriend Charlie in a long time and her last moments with him were going to be hard to forget. If she ever was able to, she wouldn't be able to because what she had witnessed was something that no one should ever have to see in their lifetime. When I left off at the beginning of the story, the couple was waiting outside of that door for Todd because he had forgotten something in the building, and then he was going to show them to the area to clean the brush out. But what happened was when Todd walked out of that side door to greet them. Kayla now told police he had a gun in his hand when he walked back out, and it was so unexpected for him to walk out with a gun. It didn't make sense to Kayla. It was so not making sense that she almost was alarmed. She just looked at him when he came out with the gun, and she was trying to make it make sense. But as soon as Todd exited that doorway, Todd, this mild mannered professional man who had hired them and had paid her multiple times in the past and worked for him multiple times in the past, walked out of that door, raised the gun and just began rapid firing at Charlie right there in front of Kayla. Kayla stood there, frozen in fear, and she just watched like it was a like it was a movie. Almost She watched Todd boom, boom boom. Todd

59:38 shot Charlie, the man that she loved, three times in the chest, right in front of her, where Charlie then collapsed to the ground. After he collapsed and he began to bleed out, he lay there gasping for air until his heart couldn't pump anymore, and then he stopped moving. It was over before it ever began. And after that happened, Charlie never moved again. So just as quickly as it happened, and she's trying to absorb it and take it in and look at Charlie and try to figure out what the hell just happened. That's when she felt. Todd put his arm around her neck like in a headlock style grab, and he told her go inside or you can join Charlie.

1:00:32 He wasn't yelling, he wasn't sneering in her face. He was calm as a cucumber, very calm and matter of fact, like nothing had just happened. And in total shock and unable to even think, she complied with what he said. He grabbed around the neck and he just led her into the building. To see your love die violently and just so abruptly in front of your face. I don't even know how her mind could have even absorbed nor processed what had just occurred in that moment. I don't even know how you would do that that The shock was so real. Charlie knew, or Kayla knew, that Charlie was dead. But once she was inside the building, she said, her eyes remained fixed on the door, waiting for Charlie to walk back through it. She knew that that wasn't gonna happen, but she just kept staring at the door.

So Kayla is alone in the garage with Todd, who took her over. He then cuffed her ankles, and that's when he pulled out a ballgag and he shoved that in her mouth and tied it. I hope you're realizing what this means. When I'm telling you this too.

And something else to note is that Kayla was originally going to bring someone else with her that day to work on the property, but Todd had told her, you know what, if Charlie can't come, just just come another day. I want you to bring Charlie with you. And she said, oh okay, and that's when Todd had explained to her, Look, this is my personal property.

And so it made sense, and so they switched things around so that Charlie could come with her. But now it was just clear as day he wanted to kill Charlie and he wanted Kayla to watch it. But why, why what is going on? Well that would be answered because Todd would tell her why. He told her it's easier to control people when you take somebody they love. Now, this all took place while Kayla remains hand and legcuffed on the ground, and Todd walked over and plopped himself down in a chair to have a chat with her. And he started talking to her almost as if they were in a staff meeting, and he opened with an apology his meeting. He opened with an apology.

1:04:11 Sorry I had to kill Charlie, but I just need you to know how serious I am. And it's easier to control you if you take somebody you care about. And then he fussed at Kayla. He fussed at her and told her, you know, you should have known better. I'm obviously a killer. I mean, I do this for a living. You should have known better to insult her, as if you know she already I'm sure was feeling just horrified because she had brought Charlie with her. And now you're chastised the murderer. It's going to chastise her telling her that she should have known better. But then he said, but you know what, there's just something special about you, And he tells her, I think you know, I'm gonna just be breaking all of my personal rules because I'm going to be keeping you alive. Yeah, I'm gonna keep you alive, he did tell her, though I haven't made my mind up yet whether I'm gonna kill you or sell you, but for now, I'm gonna keep you.

I wouldn't rather be killed in that moment than hear someone say I don't know what I'm gonna do with you, but I think I'll keep you after seeing what he's capable of. So as this involuntary staff meeting wrapped up, Todd very calmly stated, I'm gonna go take care of Charlie now, and he walked out of the building. So when he went outside, he took Charlie's freshly murdered body, still laying on the ground, and wrapped him up in a blue tarp. And that's when he went back inside, and he got Kayla bound by the feet, bound by the hands, and gag in her mouth. He brought her out and he walked her right past Charlie's body in the tarp, and he made her shuffle like a penguin over to the green storage container that she had seen whenever she had first pulled up to come clean the property, and he opened it up. She doesn't know what's inside. It's pitch black, and so he leads her by flash by flashlight, passed those shelvings full of the rations and the AMMO straight to the back.

But that's when he grabbed that three foot piece of chain, chained it around her neck, connected her neck to one corner, and then connected her feet to the other corner. After he had her completely immobilized by wrist and ankle and neck and she spread apart on either side of the container, he then confronted her and said, look, I need to get some information from you, and she's just staring at him like what am I possibly going to be able to give you? And he wanted the passwords to both her phone and Charlie's phone, and he also wanted their Facebook passwords, which the ballgag was removed and she gave him.

1:07:01 So once she was secured and he got the information that he wanted, he turned around, walked out, shut the door, and locked it. And that's when there was straight silence. And y'all, it's August when this happened. It's hot as hell. She's in the pitch black, uncomfortably chained, scared out of her mind, just saw her boyfriend murdered. The unknown of what was to come had to be unbearably distressing, not to mention the trauma of what she had just gone through. So as she's chained in this building, that's whenever Todd loaded Charlie into the bucket of a backo like dead cattle, and just drove off to the back of his property.

1:07:48 He dumped him out of the bucket, dug a hole, then he rolled Charlie back into the hole, and then he filled it back in with the dirt that he had just pulled out with not as much as a kind word for his departed soul. Todd then returned to the container a couple hours later, and that's whenever he decided he was going to start laying out the rules for his new captive, Kayla. He told her if you fight back, I'll kill you. If you try to hurt me, I'll kill you. If you try to run away, i will kill you. And once he got all of that out of the way, he moved on to his next goal, which required Kayla to remove her clothes, and that is when he first raped her. Strangely, though, while he is doing this act to her, he was acting as if he almost wanted Kayla to enjoy their time together, like he cared that she was enjoying herself. If you can even imagine. All Kayla could think of, though, was her Charlie and how scary this man on top of her was.

1:09:06 But this guy's acting like that's in the past. This repulsive behavior, by the way, would continue for the next sixty five days that she was missing. He would rape her multiple times a day, and his behavior during this time was like that of an infatuated schoolboy. So while he's violating her in ways that no woman should ever experience, and he's treating her like a sex slave, he acted as though he may actually care about her, if you can even believe that, as if her needs or her wants were something that he contemplated. I mean, if she could just get over the murder and the kidnapping and the chaining like a dog and being raped in a storage container. He cared and at one point, and I know this, let me tell you why I know that to be true. At at one point he told her that once she calmed down, that they could just be together.

1:10:05 She just needed to quote wait for the Stockholm syndrome to set in, end to quote, the convoluted thinking of this animal is so twisted. And if you want some insight to what he meant, I'm gonna give it to you real quick. Stockholm syndrome. That's a psychological phenomenon when a person who's been held captive or they've been subjected to abuse, if they begin to develop positive feelings or somewhat of like an emotional attachment to their captor. And this came from a nineteen seventy three bank robbery. This was in Stockholm, Sweden, and that's when these hostages were taken over and taken hostage for a few days at a bank, and then while the police were attempting to rescue them the victims here, the hostages began to almost align with their kidnappers ideology. And I wanted to give you some examples so you could understand how or why.

1:10:57 So one of the hostages she began to shit in the bank vault where that he was holding her, and the bank robber put his jacket around her shoulders because she was cold and kind of like rubbed her shoulders to warm her up. And then there was another one that was complaining, I'm claustrophobic, it's getting to me. He allowed her to walk out of the bank vault. He had her attached to a thirty foot rope, but he let her walk out. And that same hostage that he let walk out on the rope when the incident was over and they were questioning her, her quote was that she thought it was very kind of him to allow her to leave the vault. So I hope it gives you a little insight to how like, oh, he's being nice to me, he's kind of he's being kind, he cares if I'm cold. Now we know that's convoluted, but that's how they felt. This is exactly what Todd was telling Kayla would eventually happen when he's being a murdering rapist. He says that they would eventually become friends and even lovers, and that he would take care of her. It's insane, but in his mind, this was all a means to an end.
