All right, this case is going to take place in two thousand and nine in Fayetteville, North Carolina, home of the Davis family. And the family was small, all right. It just comprised of mom Antoinette and her two children. There was five year old Shanayah and her seven year old brother. She actually, if I'm going to tell the whole story here, she actually had a total of four brothers and two sisters, but they were all from different sets of combined parents, Okay, and I don't have that.

5:15 If I did, it wouldn't matter anyway. Their children and I don't want to tell all their details, but there was a mix and match of parents throughout separations and whatnot. So half siblings she had, but mainly from her mother Antoinette. It was her and her other brother. So when I tell you a precious child, I am not exaggerating. For this show, you must look up pictures of this little angel. She is the sweetest little thing. She's got this precious little smile, curly little ringlets, chubby cheeks, happy little girl, friendly and loving, and y'all, this was one of those little sweethearts. Obviously I never met her, but I can tell you from the discs rription I've read from family members about her that this little baby girl was a joy to be around. She was known as being a good little helper around the house. She would do her little chores. She would help out when she was asked. Now she was five years old, and being five years old, she loved to play dress up. She loved to do the girly things like fixing her hair. She played with her barbie dolls, and if if she had a choice of where she would be, she loved being outside and riding her scooter. The scooter was where it was at. And y'all, we're in a phase in my house right now where scooters are where it's at. And I got scooters from one end of my house to the other. The neighborhood kids come scooting over. My kids are scooting. Everybody's doing a little scooting. So I know how much fun that

6:46 had to be for her. And if she had to pick something out, you could guarantee her choice would be something that included her favorite colors, which were pink and yellow, precious little heart. She was a kindergarten student at Morganton Road Elementary School and needless to say, you can tell it just from my voice. She was a good girl and she was meeting every milestone for her age. Now, in September of two thousand and nine, her mother and her brother lived in a trailer of her mother's sister. Her name was Miss Brenda Davis. And this was and I don't even know if this would be called foreshadowing, but hopefully I have that right. But the name of the trailer park was Sleepy Hollow Trailer Park, and that just oozes scary to me. And I know you're not supposed to judge by names, but Sleepy Hollow sounds scary. I imagine a man, you know, riding his horse with a punkin on his head. It just sounds creepy. But based on my research. I did go to this trailer park because I wanted to kind of get a feel for it and see what it was like, because you know, different areas have different what you know, ways of living, and like, we have a local trailer park that I'm thinking about in Walker, Louisiana, and it's really nice. It's got nice homes in it. It's surrounded by a nice wooden fence. There's nice entry ways, and so I wanted to go kind of see what was Shanaya seeing when she lived there, what was it like when she was outside playing. Well, based on my research, this trailer park was lower end living. So it's a big mobile

8:18 home park and it's within range of Fort Bragg. I think it was maybe an hour or maybe forty five minutes from Fort Bragg. There's a Walmart nearby, which is always a plus. I love Walmart. But most of the trailers in this park were owned by people owned by the park, and people just rented the trailers. They didn't move their own in. They certainly don't look new by any means, but certainly livable and anyone could make a happy home there. Money, we know, does not make a home, right, Love makes a home and They all looked kind of similar eighties model cream up and down, vertical type metal paneling on the outside, green trim, and you know, just average, I guess, lower income America. And the specific trailer that they lived in. It wasn't large, but they were making it work. And money was scarce, no doubt. Money was scarce, and rent was something that everyone had to contribute to if they were going to be able to make ends meet. Now, Brenda the aunt, she wasn't married, but she was dating a man named Jerroy Smith, who was also the father of her children, So you know, I guess committed relationship, you would say, and they had children together, but they were not married. But Brenda or her baby daddy, however you want to word it, Brenda, her children, and her baby's father, and then Antoinette and her two children were all living in this small trailer. But they wanted to make sure that everybody had their their own space I guess in the home.

9:45 So Brenda Gerroi and their children stayed in the back bedroom, while Antoinette and her two children stayed in the front room of the trailer. Now a little bit about Antoinette. She had been in a previous relationship with a man by the name of Brad Lockhart, and together they had Shania. It didn't work out and they split, but they still were gonna co parent and do the best that they could for Shania. Now, I know someone's going to reach out and be like, well, what about the brother. Honestly, I am not sure of the father of the brother, and I'm not gonna say the brother's name, just out of respect for him, because he's still young, and it's it's of no true consequence whether you know his name or not, Okay, And I don't believe Shanaia's father is the same father, and you'll see why in the story as we go. So there was no formal custody agreement between Antoinette and Brad, but Shania lived primarily with her father, but would often visit her mother at that sleepy hollow trailer park. Now call me judgy, call me mean, call me, oh, call me.

10:50 What's on my share right now? It says beautiful, baan ass, call me whatever you want to call me. I don't care, but it says something to me, just as an outsider looking in. It says something to me that a mother would not have main domicillary custody of her daughter. And I'll just let you summer on that. You can think what you think. But I remember when I first was investigating this story that did strike me. Why would a dad have custody of the daughter? That said, Brad Lockhart is a good and decent man, And I thought, you know, I'm a product of a divorced family, and I can assure you it did not go well when I was younger. I was very impressed with Brad in that he openly said, look, I don't look at Antoinette as a bad parent.

11:37 She's never really lived in the best neighborhoods, which was certainly concerning to Brad because their daughter was going to be obviously visiting the mom. But he wasn't concerned about her caring for Shanaiah as a mother. It just he didn't really like the locations where she typically lived, so on weekends that was primarily when Antoinette would have her daughter. Both parents came across as loving and were trying to do what was best for Shania and Shanaia loved her mama and she loved her daddy, and she wanted to see them both, so they did the best that they could to make that happen for their little girl. Kudos to these two, and that there was no formal custody agreement and they still made it happen. Now, about two months after moving in with Antoinette's sister Brenda, everyone in the trailer was in bed and they were sleeping for the night, but about five point thirty the next morning, so they went to bed on the ninth. Five thirty the morning of November the tenth, Brenda woke up because she thought she heard a bedroom door open and shut, so she kind of sat up listened. She shook Jerroi and was like, hey, I heard something. So they both kind of listened for a minute.

12:50 They determined, hey, it's probably nothing, and then they both went back to sleep. But around six o'clock, about thirty minutes later, Antoinette came into their room and said, hey, have you seen Shanaya And they both said no, we've been in bed. So Antoinette said, well, look, I'm gonna go outside and I'm gonna go look for her. I guess in the around the trailer park, and so a little bit later she came back in and was really nervous. She said, look, I've knocked on all the doors of all of the people that live nearby, and nobody has seen Shanaia. I can't find her. So Aunt Brenda is alarmed. What do you mean you can't find her? Right, it's early in the morning. What do you can't find her? We have to call the police, call now, but Antoinette was kind of hesitant to do so, I mean, is it really that serious yet? So obviously you're listening right now armchair quarterbacking with me, and you know that this is going to be serious because you're listening to a true crime podcast. But in the moment, Mom wasn't quite sure. Maybe she's hiding, maybe she's playing. I don't want to overdo this. Something else that I'm going to tell you again, I'm armchair quarterbacking this again, is that Antoinette had a history with drug abuse, and so I also feel like maybe that might have played into not wanting to call the police as well. No one has told me that. I haven't read that anywhere, certainly, but I get that feeling, right just having just on experience. So Brenda and GERROI get up, they go outside and they're kind of hanging around looking for where Antoinette could be. And that's when they

14:24 noticed something on the stairs and on the railing of the trailer that lead up to the door, and it had not been there the night before. It appeared that there was feces smeared on the railing as well as on the stairs, and then inside of that feces seemed to be what looked like illegible yellow scribbling within it. Now, by yellow, what do I mean by that? I don't know if that means the color of the feces affected the scribbling, or if something like uh, chalk, like sidewalk yellow sidewalk chalk was scribbled in it. I genuinely don't know, but I'm just telling you what the report said was found. So when this was discovered, completely unnerved, Antoinette called the police. It was about six fifty two a m. At the urging of her sister, and within ten minutes the police were there.

15:26 Well, say, I'm not getting your anger as clearanty to flow down a little bit and tell me again, okay, ma'am, how can I help you? I woke up and my daughter was not in I don't know if she walked out. I don't know what's going on. With night here? How is that order by mail? What time did you wake up? When did you last there last night? Thirty last night? That when you put her a van, yes, ma'am. No, when she went back to be that was five this morning. That was the India. Now, okay, were there any doors open or anything like that? She know how to lock the front door? Tain? What is her name? Tell that name for me? The white white black heir his band she's dirat. What was she wearing? She's wearing just no blue, big old black blue circuit designs on the front. But I hear it out, mkay. Did she have on I needed? She didn't take no shoes, no pants, no nothing?

16:33 Did you have on underwear yet? Mail? Can do you know what color? There? White? And got people? But I guess I can't. I can't live. But they're like white with pete designs on the okay? Okay? And you said under the doors were open? No, ma'am, there were a lot that he knows how to unlocked the front door? Were they closed? Going there and get around five thirty pm? You had the neighborhood. I take everywhere and I haven't the I'm just I don't know what else to do. I'm so funny. I don't know what to do there anymore juveneles inside the home. Okay, And your doing was not unlock as you you're telling me, No, it was not lot But I'm telling you she knows kind of unlike I'm hoping that you'd luck and walk out.

17:19 Okay, your calling from now, Okay, we already got your calling. We're going to get someone out. You tell her her hair was out. It's a how much does she wait? You know, I don't know, I don't remember. Okay, all right now, just trying to you know, check your home again and check around the neigborhood. If anything change it, call ups back. But we already got the call in and we're going to get someone out of so as we can. Okay, all right, all right now, thank you. And they began searching for Shanaya. They had canine'es, they brought the brought out the works to try to look for this little girl. Now, just a quick little lesson on canine's. Canine specialize in what they do. So there's two main types of canine's. Really, you have the single purpose and you have the dual purpose. Single purpose really focuses on doing one thing, for example, like apprehension. Those are the ones that bite your ass when you run right or you try to hurt the police officer and they will smoke you. I love watching the videos of K nine's in action. Does anyone else get wrapped up in those videos on TikTok of these fricking fur missiles just taking down the bad guys? Because I love it all right. Dual purpose dogs can do things like search for what are called articles, that's like clothing or guns or credit cards. Or they can also look at drug you know, find drugs, stuff like that.

18:34 In my parish, by the way, I have to give a shout out to a sweet little pup named k C. The letters KC. He's a purpose, a single purpose dog. He's a K nine obviously, and he's a little black lab sweet as a button. I always bring him into my class and the kids just love him. I'll post some pictures, how about that. I'll post some pictures of KC for y'all. But single purpose, great pup, fun to be around. But we also have tons of Belgian mallinwaws, which are like the badass canines that can jump fences and they go apprehend the bad guys, and they can do some pretty wild and out stuff, right. You see those in the military too. Those are like the the t Rex, badass dogs of the police force. So they sent these canines out. They're looking for Shaniyah, and that's when the police start doing what they do by interviewing anybody that they can who might can give them some information about what may have happened to her. In the meantime, the Fayette police officer named Elizabeth Culver, she was on scene and she noticed that the feces on the railing of that front porch now looked smooth, and so she approached Antoinette, and she noticed that she had a cooking pot in her hand, and she realized that Antoinette was pouring water over the feces. Now, hey, not everybody's the sharpest tool in the shit, okay, but most people would know you don't mess with a crime scene or a potential crime scene in fecal matter. When your child is missing on the railings, seems like

20:06 something I would want to know. And so Antoinette was trying to wash it off. And that's whenever Officer Culver said, don't do that again. Don't touch anything so during the search they went to a trash can of what was going to be the unit number of one one, one nine, And when they were searching in that trash can, they found a blanket that had been thrown away in it. And this caught the attention of police, not just because it was a blanket, but because they saw readily that it had feces smeared on it as well. That's called a clue. So they grabbed the blanket, they bring it out to Antoinette and Antoinette says, yes, that is our blanket. Oh my god. So Gerroi Smith also recognized it and said that had been in the living room last night. That was in our living room. It was not out in a trash can. So it was a thick child's comforter type blank it. So it kind of seemed like maybe Shanaia had been wrapped up in it and then maybe when she left the house it was with her mixed with the fecal matter. Now we have what's a problem, right, this isn't normal. So during questioning, Officer Culver spoke with all of the adults and also spoke with Shania's seven year old brother, and he would answer questions, no problem when the officers would ask. But the officers noticed that he seemed really distracted whenever he was questioned, but also that before he would answer their question, he would look up at his aunt

21:36 Brenda, almost for permission to answer the question. So in and of itself, that doesn't mean anything, but it is something that you would notice, you know, why does the kid feel like he needs to ask permission from an adult before he answers any of the questions. Brenda always told him answer the questions, answer the questions, and he said, I remember coming to bed, but I don't remember her leaving the bedroom. Okay. So, Antoinette and Brenda were understandably super upset. They were constantly looking at their phones. They were texting while they were being questioned by the police, and so this became a big enough issue that Officer Culver started getting a little frustrated and was like, look, I'm having a hard time. I need you to focus on these questions. So the lieutenant at the scene, she kind of appealed to her lieutenant who said, yes, take them down to the police station. Let's give them a more quiet, you know, area to sit and maybe they can answer the questions better there. So in the first interview, Antoinette was interviewed for six hours and nine minutes, a long interview, right, because we've got to get all the information we possibly can. And so this was done by a detective Bowman, and she told him, look, you know, I don't know what's going on. I don't know where Shanaia is. I don't know if somebody took her. I don't have any answers for you. You. I put her to bed around six a m.

23:03 That morning, which was kind of odd. What you put your bed, your kid to bed at six am? Right now, I'll say this. Maybe there's a typo in the report when I was reading it, but that's what it said. I put her to bed around you know, five point thirty six am, and then her brother came and told me that she wasn't in the bed anymore. That's when I got up. I went and asked my sister. I went in searched the neighborhood. And so by the end of the six hours, Antoinette became very angry. She started getting upset with the police officers. Was very frustrated and said, why is this taking so long? I need to be out there looking for my daughter. I've been here for six hours answering your questions. So Detective bub And looks at her and says, you can leave any time you want to. We're trying to collect any information we can use to try to help. And so, although she was very upset, she never left the police station. She stayed, she answered the questions, and then eventually would leave after the six hours.

24:04 So Officer Culver back at the scene. She was working with a partner named Daniel Suggs, and they stayed at the trailer park. They went to the main office to see, you know, is there any camera out there or do they have any security footage that maybe we could look at, hopefully to see Shania roaming the area around the trailer park. And they also wanted to identify any vehicles that came in and out of the trailer park during the time that they believe Shania went missing. The day eventually just turned tonight and there was no sign of shaniah upset, frustrated, worried. You know, five year olds don't get to go missing, that's not what gets to happen.

24:45 But she wasn't found. So day turned to night, night, then turned today, and the following morning, about seven am, this would have been November eleventh, there was a shift change taking place at a local comfort inn in Sandford. So there was an employee there, her name was Regina Bikani, and she was taking her place behind the counter to start helping customers in and out of the hotel. There was another worker that was there. She came in and she took her place. So as she settled in, you know, to her morning checklist to look things over, she noticed that an Amber alert popped up on the hotel's computer screen. So if you're not familiar with an Amber alert, those started around nineteen ninety six, and the purpose of the Amber alert it really started out as a voluntary partnership between law enforcement, you know, broadcasters, transportation companies in serious child abduction cases, which is a beautiful thing because those are going to be the people that notice kids or have the ability to put the information out there to alert a lot of us at one time, oh my god, this kid is missing.

25:53 Well, over time, those Amber alert programs evolved into all so sharing information with companies that likely may see a child during a transport, including hotels. It's genius, right, so hotels are near interstates for travelers. Well, if this is an abduction, that just might be where someone would take a child. So that Amber alert popped up on the screen, and when Regina looked at it, she thought, oh my god, that picture looks like a child that I saw here the previous morning. So Amber alert, right, it says Shania Nicole Davis, five year old female, mixed race.

26:41 Kelly, why are you bringing the race up? I need to tell you it matters. Shania's father was white and Shania's mother was black, so that would come to play a role in this. She's approximately four feet tall, sixty pounds, brown eyes, so looking into the records, right, she gets on the computer and she starts looking to the records, and she felt like that was the child that she had seen with an adult male in room two one. So she was so convinced in fact that this was the child she had seen that she got on the phone and she reported it to the Amber Alert hotline. Back at the police station, Shanai's aunt, Brenda kept thinking about something that her nephew told her back at the trailer. When they realized that Shanai was gone, and the stress of figuring out where she was was happening. She remembered that the boy said something that didn't quite register at the time, but now that she was sitting there kind of rehashing things, he had said that Mono had been at the home that morning. And I don't mean the kissing disease, I mean a person. Okay, Mono was the nickname of Brenda's ex boyfriend, Mario McNeil. Now that certainly didn't make any sense at the time. They kind of blew it off. Brenda was with her living boyfriend and in her kid's father, Jerroi, and at the

28:11 trailer all night and she wasn't messing with Mario. Mario was not at the trailer. Brenda and Gerroi had been in the house and while his mother, the little boy's mother, Antoinette, was outside, he had come to her and told Brenda Mario had been there the previous night, and so Jerroi looked up and said, are you sure about that Mono was here? Mario was here, and the little boy shook his head, yes, he was here. So Brenda had immediately texted Mario Hey. All the text said was hey, but he didn't answer. So she also had called Mario right after the boy said that, but Mario never answered, so GERROI at the exact time, same time Brenda was texting Mario, he called Mario's girlfriend. Her name was April Autrey, and that's who Mario lived with and was also the mother of Mario's eighteen month old daughter, so he had, you know, kids with somebody else. And April answered the phone, and he's like, hey, where's Mario And she says, he's not home. He's not here.

29:21 So the two sat there kind of perplexed as to the thought that could Mario have actually been in the home? He certainly had not been invited over, and it was almost laughable. So they kind of thought maybe maybe the boy was confused, or he was remembering something from another day maybe or something, But why had he said that? Now a little bit more back information. Mono had given Brenda some money in the past because he had planned on moving into the trailer, but that was no longer an option. That had come and gone and he was living with April. They had a child together, so that was old new. There was no reason that he was going to move into the trailer anymore. And that was kind of like in the past, but now at the police station. Brenda was rethinking what her nephew had said. And when Mono finally responded to her calls and her texts from earlier, it was about eight thirty three am now, and Brenda had sent a text message back to Mario that said, and these are direct quotes from the phone company. You been to my house? Question mark? Mario says no, why, Brenda responds you lion? Mario said no, can I come though? And Brenna says hell no, And Mario says, damn, it's like that, and then Brenda says, don't text me no mo. Mario then sends a message back to Brenda saying, sure, whatever, but why

30:53 your baby daddy calling my baby mama asking for me? This was at about nine forty eight am. He then texts again, what the hell's going on? So Brenda was so fed up that she just stopped responding with him. Whatever, you idiot, I don't have time to deal with your shit. You know, Shanai is missing. I don't even want to be talking to you. Well. Meanwhile, back at the Comfort ins or the Comfort Suites hotel, the police had arrived there because of that Amber alert. Remember, the worker had put in a notice through the Amber Alert hotline. So they showed up and they were ready to interview the hotel staff and why did they think that they had seen Shanaiah? But they were convinced that it was a good lead based on what the worker had said to her had said to them, and part of that was because the hair of the child that the worker had seen struck her as the hair of a mixed child. So they asked to see the security video of the child and they readily pulled it up for them. So what they saw was shortly after six am, a blackmail arrived at the Comfort Suites and he comes into the hotel but he's by himself, and he walks up to the desk. He provides his identification and he checks into room two oh one under his own name. Guess what the name was, Mario McNeil. So during small talk with that desk clerk, her name was Jacqueline Lee. He just told her, yeah, I'm traveling with my daughter. I'm taking her to go meet with her mother in Virginia. We're

32:23 just passing through. So after they check in, he went to his car and he came back in the hotel carrying a child but the child was covered up in a blue blanket, and Miss Lee, like I said, happened to see the hair of the child and she noticed the texture of it and she thought to herself, that's a mixed baby. Cool whatever. So that chance viewing of her hair is what had them calling and making that Amber alert for Shanaya. They didn't in that live moment see her face, but then later on they see photos of her or video of her, and they're like, man, I think this is that child. So at the hotel's morning shift change, that's when Regina Bakani took Miss Lee's spot at the front desk and they pull up more video which shows Mario go to the breakfast area alone where he got a banana, some juice and a muffin, and then he went back to his room. So Charles Kimball, he was the captain at the time of the Fayetteville Police Department, He was in charge of the investigation for Shania and he was really tasked with the logistics of finding her. So based on the new video from that hotel, the police believed that Mario was the one who had taken Shanaia and that she was at least alive or at least the night before on that video of him checking in, but he was by himself when he got the breakfast the next morning. So the video I want you to know is gut wrenching from a mama's point of view, from a parent's point of view. And there's a still frame that I will share,

I've got goosebumps right now. I know you can't see it in a podcast, but I've got goosebumps right now because it's just First of all, she's five. She's five years old. She's big enough to be walking on her own. And the carry is just awkward, the way he's holding her. He's holding her with his arms out in front of him, like you know, like just bent, and she's sitting in his arms, and she looks like she's in an oversized T shirt. She has no pants on, or at least they can't be seen. You can't see anything else. You can't see her panties or anything. But her hair is messy. It's not kept.

And her body language in that photo is almost like it's like she knows him, but she's not normally care So it's like awkward the way he's holding her and her her little face she's been held by him, and her hand is her hands kind of bent on his shoulder. But I'm just telling you, it's not the same type of hold when you see a parent hold a kid. It's just not so. When the police questioned any patrons at the hotel if they had any information, a man by the name of Seth Chambers came forward. He was staying there for a business trip and he said, oh, yeah, I saw a black guy carrying a child, and it was near room twoh one. This was around six thirty in the morning. Now he didn't see anything else, but it did just catch his attention. Yeah, I saw him carrying this this little girl. So around seven thirty am that next morning, the video cameras show him leaving the room and he goes to the elevator with Shanaiah. They then exit the side door of the hotel and then they walk down a sidewalk, but he's carrying her the whole time. Now, if you're the parent of a five year old, I don't. I never carried my daughter at five everywhere five is big enough to walk, and it's cumbersome, you know. It's just weird to me. So another man was there and his name was Matthew Argyle. He was a hotel's maintenance the

36:20 hotel's maintenance worker, and it caught his attention too, so he even went to the police and said, look, I was outside that side door. I was picking up cigarette butts and trash whenever I saw I'm gonna name him Mario for the podcast, but he just said that guy, right. But I saw Mario come out with what looked to be a five or six year old girl, and at the time I saw her, he had her up on his shoulders, but he had her covered. So Matthew says, I thought she was asleep, he said, but I said hello to the guy, and the guy made eye contact with me, but then he looked away without saying anything in response. And I talk about gut instincts all the time on this podcast. They're there for a reason, and the gut instinct of Matthew was that this is weird, Like he just the whole thing was kind of weird. He acknowledged him with his eyes, but he didn't say anything to him, and then he just continued to walk towards the parking lot.

37:19 So Matt's gut told him that something and this is a direct quote from him, something was a miss. And so he says, I continued to watch him without trying to be obvious about it. So he was just, you know, doing some bs little stuff standing there, but he was watching out of the corner of his eye, and he watched Mario put Shanaya into the rear passenger seat of the car. He got into the driver's seat, but then he just sat there for a minute, and it looked like he was smoking either a cigarette or a cigar of some tighte. So matt continues acting like he's doing some kind of busy work, and he continues to watch just because it didn't sit right with him. And then he watched Mario drive to the pa billion of the front entrance of the hotel. He puts out that cigarette and then he walks back inside, and that's when the cameras pick it back up again and Mario goes to the front desk and he's wanting his security to posit back well again. He's talking to the lady at the front desk and he's like, yep, taking my daughter. Now we're going to meet her mother. The camera footage shows him sign the ticket for cash back and he gets his money from the clerk. This all happened before they all realized that this was a missing child and was likely Shanaya. Now, the housekeeper had been cleaning the room. This is after Mario left. She had gone in to clean the room, and she comes back to the office because she found two small, clear, open plastic packets with what she thought to be

38:52 cocaine residue in them. So she brought him up to the office to tell the boss there, look what I found in this. The hotel security cameras showed Mario leaving the hotel's front entrance. He gets into his car. This is around seven forty am and then the car turns left out of the driveway and it drives off. Shanaia is in the back seat by yourself, unaware of what her future is about to hold. So once they nailed down the room they had been in the hotel manager checked the cleaning records and told the police, look, the bedding has not been changed. We did dump the trash already, and there was a towel that's already been removed from the room, but the bedding has not been changed. There were two comforters in that room two oh one, and they had not been laundered either, so they were taken in for evidence. The rest of the room was going to be processed for forensic evidence as well. So we're now at November eleventh. It's five twenty five pm and Antoinette, Shanaia's mom is being interviewed again. This only lasts about thirty minutes. This time, police now have more information Shanaio is alive, but is with Mario. They already know this, so they bring Antoinette at Antoinette end to interview her and during this interview she opens up and she says, look, my boyfriend. His name is Clarence Coe.

She then revealed that he hits Shanaia in the face in the early morning hours of November tenth, after she and co had been arguing, and Antoinette says, look, I tried to stop him, but CO took off with Shania and her best guess was that they were probably around the Murchison Road area. Well, the police are going to call bullshit right then now I'm not saying they say it out loud, but they know that CO does not have Shanaia. They've already got the video. So Detective Bowman takes this into account because you never know, maybe CO did take Shanaia and then give give Mario a give her to Mario. So he writes all this down, he takes it into account and then he goes back. Antoinette leaves and he goes to check to see if there's any new developments on the case. In the meantime, So after Shania's aunt, Brenda was then brought into the loop of the video that shows Mario holding Shanaiah.

41:21 Her stomach dropped. Shania's brother, that seven year old brother was right, Mario must have been in my house that morning. Immediately she and Jeroi Smith told the police. Oh my god, my nephew told us. He said that Mario had been in the trailer, in the trailer that morning that Shanaia went missing. But they we just thought he was mistaken. We thought he would never be at our trailer. Why would he be there? But he must have been right. Brenda also realized something that she had heard Antoinette say in the last twenty four forty eight hours at their aunt's house, and it must have had more meaning than she realized in the moment. And remember, I'm not hating on this aunt, Brenda, because she's trying to put the pieces together two of what's going on. In the hours after Shanaiah went missing, they were gone to the police station, and then they went by their aunt's house. So Brenda and Antoinette's ant's house, and at some point Mario had shown up at the ant's house and she Antoinette and Mario had words, and Antoinette yelled at him and this is a direct quote, I don't have shit to say to you. I just want to know where my mother fucking baby's at. And Mario looked at her and said, I all right, and then he jumped in his car and he sped away. Now, right now, as a good human being, your spidey senses should be firing off.

42:52 First of all, I don't refer to my children as my mother fucking babies. And I don't know any more. Who does They're not property, they're not things that you know. I tell somebody, maybe I want to know where my mother fucking car's at if you steal my car, but not my children. Not my children. So Brenda now starts thinking, oh, my god, I think Antoinette is lying. She's not telling the truth about what she knows or what she's saying that she knows. And after this sick guttural realization of what's going on, Brenda and her sister Antoinette get into a huge argument. And I wasn't there, but I'm sure went something like, where is Shanaya? What do you know? We need her? She's five, she's with Mario possibly, why does he have your baby? Why does he have my niece? Tell me what's going on. So I'm sure she felt defeated and scared and realized, my god, I can't even trust my sister to tell me what's going on. So in the evening hours of now November twelfth, Brenda takes off to the detective's office and wants to talk to them again. She hands over her phone. She says, take pictures, take whatever you need, and she shows those text messages that she and Mario had exchanged before she realized that he knows more than he obviously said to her.

44:27 She gave over the phone and that same day police found Mario and he agreed, I'll come up to the police station and I will talk to you about that same time, as all of this is kind of coming to fruition, and remember Shanaia is nowhere to be found at this time. They also located his Mitsubishi Galant, conveniently parked or backed into a space at the Mount Sinai Apartments, nowhere near his residence where he lived on Washington Drive. So police did what's called an exigent circumstance search of the vehicle's trunk. An exigent circumstance means basically that it's not practical to go take the time it would take to file a warrant because it's time sensitive, and that in this instance a child may be killed or maybe you know, dead, we need to get a hold of her. So they did this warrantless search and popped the trunk open to see if she was in the car, but Shanayah wasn't there.

45:34 So they tow the car to the police department and they start processing it for forensic evidence, and this included taking soil samples from the wheel wells. They took break and gas pedal covers. They took samples from those to see if there was any substance analysis that they could do, maybe, you know, shoe samples of where Mario had been walking compared to the soil samples that were on possibly those those pedals. And beginning around nine thirty pm that say evening, several detectives interviewed Mario, praying that they could get some information of where Shanaiah was. Y'all, it's now been two days. They're praying to find this baby alive. And the officers didn't handcuff Mario. He wasn't arrested yet.

46:17 They also had his cell phone or they excuse me, they didn't have his cell phone. He had his cell phone, and he continued to receive messages and to text and to make phone calls and chat with people the whole time that he was at the police station. So they finally got down to the brass tax of things and they said, look, we need to know, we know you had this child or you were with her. You better talk And he says, look, I was at Sleepy Hollow trailer park just after midnight on November ninth, rolling into November tenth. That's true, but I never went to Brenda Davis's trailer I never saw Shania, he says, I didn't. I don't even know Shania. I've never even seen Shanaiah.

47:00 And he said, and she also was never in my car, and I didn't leave the city limits, and I never was at a hotel. It didn't happen. So after he makes these very direct claims, that's when the detectives turn a photograph around and slide it across the table to him, and they say, well, why don't you take a look at this, this photo of you with her at the hotel. How about you explain that? And Mario looks at the picture and he says, well, I can because that's not me. Weird. That's really weird, Mario, because the person who signed into the hotel not only looks identical to you, but he also checked in under the name Mario McNeil. He also showed your ID, and he also gave your home address. And Mario says, well, it wasn't me, and it couldn't have been me because I lost my license. Yeah, you ever just watched someone bald face lie to you and it's the most ridiculous thing you've ever A three year old could have done better. So the police obviously knew he's lying held the devil himself. The devil himself probably shook

So the questioning continued for fifty four more minutes. They really put the pressure on him, and that's when Mario finally broke and admitted, Okay, yeah, I was at the hotel with shanayah, Okay, why why were you there? Why were you there with Shania? And he said, well, I got a text message. I'd been texting, okay, and he said, I thought I got a text message from Brenda. It said come to Sleepy Hollow and pick up Shania on the porch, and so I did I and I took her to the hotel.

49:19 Okay, why why are you saying you got this text message from Brenda, which, by the way, they knew wasn't true because they already had Brenda's cell phone, who she willingly came and turned it over and said you can have anything in the phone, Please find Shania you can look at it. So they knew that that wasn't true. He said, well, I thought it was from Brenda and it said come get Shaniya off the porch, and so he went and got her. Okay, so you just randomly got a text message. It said come take the five year old to a hotel and you do it? Can you expand on that? And he says, okay, well, look, I'd been doing cocaine all night and that's when I got to call her. A text message from some unknown people that told me to bring Shia to a dry cleaning establishment at the corner of country Club Drive and Ramsey Street. And so he said all I was doing was taking Shania and I was delivering her to these unknown people, and that they were driving a gray Nissan Maxima. Oh okay, okay, who are they? How did they get your number? Why were they messaging you? What did they want with Shanaia? And he says, oh, I don't know. I mean I was just waiting to get the call to come get her, to kill her. But then the police are like, wait, what excuse me?

50:38 Hello? What to come kill her. But after he made that statement, he then would not expand anymore, even though they kept trying. Police kept trying, what are you talking about? This doesn't make any sense. You've got to explain more. But he wouldn't. He wouldn't say anything. So police had enough at that point and they make the arrest on Maria because hell or high water, buddy, you ain't walking out of here. This isn't driving. So police go and they checked the phone records. There were no messages, nothing to Brenda, nothing about picking up Shanaiah on the porch. There were also no text messages nor any calls to Mario's phone from any unknown numbers or unidentifiable people. So a quick summary of what was found on the phone in the early morning hours of November the tenth, After admittedly snorting cocaine, he also said that he had had a couple of shots of liquor.

51:36 Mario had started texting every woman in his phone. So I don't know if you're starting to build the picture here, but basically, he's doing drugs, he's getting drunk, and now he's trying to go find a piece of ass, even though he's living with his girlfriend. In April. He's in his phone freakin' dog out there trying to find women I guess to hook up with, and he tried Brenda, he did, but her phone was off so she never answered him. He then texted a woman named Taja mclan. Taja McClain also lived in Sleepy Hollow. She eventually invited him over. He made his way over there, but it wasn't until about two point fifty two am that he got there, and so he was texting Taja, hello, you know I'm here, and turns out she had fallen asleep, so she never answered the phone. So around three oh six am, that's when Mario texted goodnight to Tasia, and then at three oh seven am, Mario again attempted to text Brenda. Now, something important about that text was that he was right near the trailer where Shanaya was sleeping. He also knew how to get in to that trailer because remember he had previously planned to move into it, and he had given money to Brenda as the deposit to move in, even though he never did. He did, however, know how to get into that trailer. And this is the really important part. He knew how to get into that trailer even when it was locked. He knew the trick

53:09 to get in shortly after six am that morning, though Brenda didn't answer him. But shortly after six am that morning, that's when Mario arrived with Shanaiah at the Comfort Inn and Suites. There's no denying it. The records and video corroborate that. What was also in the text messages and in the phone records was that at approximately eight twenty two am, the day after she was kidnapped, more texts happened and cell phone tower pings were available, and this meant locations would be available too, because cell phone towers have you know, they have geographic locations to them and they only service a certain geographical area.

53:58 So Antoinette, mom of Shania is now brought in again for a third interview, and this was at eight thirty eight pm on that day. It lasted about forty six minutes and Detective Bowman now cut to the chase. He wasn't playing games with her. He says, look, we know you're lying about what happened to Shanaia. We have a photograph of Shanaio with Shania with Mario McNeil, So she's sitting there hearing this information, and he asks her directly, what do you think He calls him Mono, But what do you think Mono would say when he's caught. What do you think he would say when he's caught with Shania? So she looks at the photo of her baby girl being held by Mario, and that's when she says, Okay, look, I've been lying. Co. My boyfriend had nothing to do with it.

And on top of that, you're willing to throw an innocent man under the bus, someone you supposedly care about. Your boyfriend. You throw him under the bus so that he can take the rap for kidnapping your child and abusing her, supposedly hitting her in the face. What are we dealing with here? What kind of monster are we really dealing with here? So Detective Bowman told her, look, your lies are causing a lot of problems. First of all, co has been arrested and he's locked up because of what you said, which is now not true. By the way, lying to a federal agent is a federal offense. Dude. I mean, you're facing punishment up to five years in prison just for lying. Maybe maybe you ought to tell the truth. I mean that aside, y'all, she's framing an innocent man, all while her child is missing. So her response to that, I'm thirsty. I need some water. And I sat on that for a second, thinking, I wonder if Snaia is thirsty while you're sitting there lying.

56:19 She then told Detective Bowman that Mono had a relationship with her sister Brenda. Well, great, no shit, Sherlock, we already know that. What does that have to do with anything right now? So Detective Bowmen then just tried to appeal to her emotion and said, look, your lies are wasting time, time that we don't have, and you don't know what's going to happen to Shanaia as a result of the lies that you keep telling your little girl. All we care about right now is finding your little girl. And Antoinette never really said anything else of any value, you know, she just kind of things and then she eventually thanked Detective Bowman for trying to find her little girl, and she left the police station. Now, if you're screaming at me right now on the podcast. Why didn't they arrest her?

57:12 Why didn't they arrest her? Y'all? Sometimes you have to kind of play the game because we don't need her locking up if she knows something, she's lying, Why are you lying? Why are you lying? And Shanaia finding her is more important right now. So the search for Shanaia was still in full force, regardless of her mother's lying and what seems to be lack of urgency about what's going on. So now I want you to know this too. When the FBI receives a notification of a missing child like an Amber alert, agents will immediately reach out to that local law enforcement agency to offer their assistance because they have much better resources. They have a wide gamut of things that they can do outside of local law enforcement to help find this missing child.

58:04 And so FBI special agent, his name was Frank Brostrom, he contacted a sergeant Chris Corson of the Fayetteville Police Department and said, what can I do? I'd like to offer my assistance. Is there anything I can do? And they immediately said, yes, please come help us. We've got to find her. And that Frank Brostrom, that special agent jumped on it, immediately got on a plane and headed down there to see what he could do. Now, I mentioned exigent circumstances earlier, and under that same concept, the FBI can quickly obtain things like cell phone data, okay, and that's going to include GPS information, toll records, and cell tower records, which are invaluable when we're trying to find a child and make sure that she's alive. And he got everything everything very quickly. This included call times from all of the people involved, okay, their cell phone all times. Cell phone tower locations. This included longitude and latitude for those cell towers. It was the perfect information to get assuming that Shanaiah had been with Mario as he made these texts and these cell phone calls. Another special agent at the same time, his name was Michael Sutton. He worked for the FBIS what's called their CAST team, like a cast on your arm cellular analysis survey team.

59:29 He took those tower records from Agent Brostrom and then he applied to them the local mapping sectors to pinpoint a more exact location. And I hope that you're feeling this with me, that so many agencies work together things behind the scenes to try to save people things that you'll never know, that you'll never hear about. All of these people working together to try to say where could she possibly be, and he was able to create a rough draft map the scene which directed them to an area specifically between what would have been Highway eighty seven and along a Highway twenty seven. They were very close to one another.

1:00:10 Specifically, he honed it in on a three what was kind of like a three way stop intersection of a Highway eighty seven, a Highway twenty four and a Highway twenty seven. So if you're from that area, you would know this as the Johnsonville and Barbecue area. Also, in the meantime, tons of volunteers and different law enforcement agencies were part of a massive search and rescue effort. And this also included a Sanford company that was training canine officers from the Virgin Islands and they volunteered their assistance while they trained. Literally no help was turned down. Everyone wanted to find this baby girl and they wanted to return her to her parents. That lead investigator on the case, his name was Kimball. He knew Mario had been arrested by now, even though Shanaia hadn't been found yet, he knew, okay, they've taken they've taken him into custody. So he got word from a man named Alan Rodgers, who was a Fayetteville defense attorney, that I need to be in contact with you because I may have some information that can help you on the search. This Alan Rodgers had represented Mario at his first court appearance following his arrest, and so that included kidnapping charges, right. So another attorney also in the mix.

Koy Brewer directed Kimball, look when you're searching that area, I need you to look for green Porta potties and I need you to look for these green Porta potties one Highway eighty seven. So Kimberle immediately took that information and went out there related to the search teams. But what they found immediately was that there was a ton of them and this is a big area. So he called back and he's like, look, the information is way too vague. I need something a little more specific. And so the attorney went back and he spoke with Mario and that's when the attorney called investigator Kimball back and said, look for the green porta potties in an area near where they killed deer on Highway eighty seven between spring Lake and Sandford, where people dress deer after they kill them. And I don't know about you, but that's a very alarming statement to me, because if this is an area where you slaughter deer, where you dress deer, what do you leave there? What do you leave after you've dressed the deer. If this is an area where they do it, and this is an area where they leave the carcasses, why would you want to look near an area where known carcasses are already decomposing. That was a very sick feeling for me.

1:03:13 So because of the time frame and everything, they weren't able to continue the search that day, and so that had to happen the next day the following day. So also that following day, Antoinette, the mom came in for a final interview and it began at eleven fifty three am, And this is on November fourteenth, and it lasted about five and a half hours. A female detective, though, was brought in this time, and I kind of feel like this was tactical because she had already Antoinette being she had already been called a liar and been kind of, you know, forceful with Detective Bowman in the previous interviews. So they brought in a detective Carolyn Pollard and as Sergeant Chris and I believe it's said Corsione, they came in. They together tried to establish a new rapport with Antoinette. So Antoinette was seated in the back corner of the interview room. Detective Pollard and Sergeant Corsione they sat in chairs between her and the door of the interview room, and they talked to her for about two hours, and they just wanted to know more about her personal background and try to figure kind of figure out what's going on, build a rapport with her. And that's when she started complaining that her stomach hurt.

And that's when I went back to, well, I wonder if Shanaia's stomach hurts, that five year old that's been out there now for days, you know, has she had something to eat, has she had something to drink? She's scared. I bet her stomach hurts too, And that's when she said, my stomach hurts because I'm pregnant. Great you're gonna be a mother again. Wonderful. So the detectives say, hey, do you need to go be examined by a doctor or dos it heard that bad? And she's like, no, my next step is to finish trying to find my daughter. Finish. Excuse the hell out of me.

So this is when Antoinette began recounting her story, which didn't change about the morning right and finding Shania gone, but she did admit that she lied in the previous interviews and that she quote put it all on co So before you might possibly I don't know how, but before you might possibly start feeling sorry for her, even if I don't know how, but if it was possible. She said that she lied because Detective Bowman scared her and tried to make her know something that she didn't know.

You think a grown man might be scaring her right now? Because I do, I do? Where is your daughter? And it was at this point that that sergeant course I owned that was in there, let her in on the fact that, look, you might want to know this. Mario's already been arrested and he's already told us that you know everything. I would suggest that you get back on the direct quote right track and maybe tell us the truth. And that, y'all, is when it all came out. It was only after she knew the game was over, the jig was up, that she told the truth and she admitted that Mario did in fact come to the trailer because she owed him a debt and she was gonna have sex with him. And that's when Sergeant of Corsion said, remember, you might want to stay on the right track here, because we already know. And that's when Shanaia's mother, the woman who carried her in her womb, who gave birth to her and was supposed to love her more than life itself, told the police that she owed Mario two

And that's not when she had sex with him for the debt, no, No, that's when she handed over her five year old baby girl to Mario with the understanding that she would be used to settle the two hundred dollars debt. Their plan was for Mario to take Shanaya to a motel to have sex with her for a two hundred dollars drug debt.

The officers were sick to their stomach, even if they feigned no reaction, and then Antoinette asked them how much longer am I going to have to be here? I wonder if Shanaya wondered how much longer she was going to have to be there with that strange man raping her, and as he did god knows what to her. And that's when Detective Bowman read Antoinette Davis her rights, placed her under arrest and let her know she wasn't leaving ever, So on November sixteenth, two thousand and nine, around one pm, one of those officers from the Virgin Islands with his training dog, came upon the lifeless body of five year old Shaniah lying partially under a log in a wooded area with deer carcasses, just where

1:10:00 the FBI mapping had shown and where that attorney said she would be. So they collected her body and they brought her for an autopsy and a sexual assault kit was performed. They did pull several hairs from her body. They also retrieved several hairs from her right hand and some from her left elbow. And I don't want to be graphic for the sake of salaciousness, because that's not what this is. This is I'm enraged that someone would treat a child this way. But she was in early stages of decomposition. Her skin was coming off. There were maggots on her, and there was a blue brew on the left side of her little face. It was about a quarter inch in dimension. And they did an examination of her pelvis which showed what they called a ring of abrasion surrounding her vagina, and the abrasions were most prominent on the anterior and the posterior of her vaginal opening. And reading the report, I sat on this for a second, because it said that she's five years

1:11:32 old, y'all, she's a baby. And it said that her hymen was not intact, but there was no evidence of recent injury to the hymen, and so I couldn't understand that. I mean, that means that there's not fresh breakage to her body. And so I called a doctor friend of mine and I asked, can you explain this to me? How this could be? And she said, well, just from experience, if the hymen's not intact and it's not recent injury to the hymen, I mean that that sounds to her like maybe this had happened before. And I'm wondering, why has that never been mentioned before? And anything about this case that I have ever investigated looked at red I've never seen someone discuss that before, you know, was this maybe ongoing, that something had happened to her? Right, And so it went on to say how she did have bruising of you know, the vaginal opening, and it was on the front and the back, and so that means basically from aggressive sexual intercourse, it bruised her little her little private area. She wasn't killed by the rape, though she was suffocated or strangled and her cause of death was ruled as asphyxiation. Now, unfortunately Mario
