In the aftermath of the murder of Pam Kinamore, a task force is formed in Baton Rouge to hunt down a killer, when Trineisha Dené Colomb, a 23-year-old aspiring Marine was abducted near a cemetery in Lafayette, Louisiana and found beaten to death just days later. Trineisha’s case would mark a turning point in the hunt for the a serial killer as DNA evidence linked her murder to a string of other victims.

Derrick Todd Lee (DTL) terrorized the Baton Rouge and Lafayette Louisiana. A Serial Killer who took the lives of at least (7) women in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, Lee’s reign of terror finally ended in late May of 2003 when he was captured in Atlanta, GA after being linked by DNA to several of the murders.

This is DTL
Hosted by Kelly Jennings and produced by the experts at Envision Podcast Productions.

1
00:00:09.480 --> 00:00:12.839
In the sultry heat of Louisiana, where the bayous whisper

2
00:00:12.919 --> 00:00:16.079
secrets and the air hangs heavy with the scent of magnolias,

3
00:00:16.640 --> 00:00:20.480
a darkness lurked beneath the surface. Derrick Todd Lee was

4
00:00:20.480 --> 00:00:24.160
a man whose charm masked a sinister reality. He was

5
00:00:24.199 --> 00:00:28.600
a monster. Lee, a seemingly ordinary man with a disarming smile,

6
00:00:28.879 --> 00:00:31.480
led a double life that would unravel in a series

7
00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:34.079
of murders in the capital city of Baton Rouge and

8
00:00:34.119 --> 00:00:37.799
the surrounding areas. As the first reports of disappearances and

9
00:00:37.920 --> 00:00:42.119
murders began to surface, South Louisiana was thrust into a nightmare,

10
00:00:42.240 --> 00:00:46.000
igniting a frantic search for answers. The true horror was

11
00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:49.280
just beginning, and the hunt for a serial killer eventually

12
00:00:49.320 --> 00:00:52.000
known by just three letters, would reveal not only the

13
00:00:52.039 --> 00:00:55.520
depths of Dereck Todd Lee's depravity, but also the resilience

14
00:00:55.560 --> 00:00:58.479
of those most affected by his evil acts, the families

15
00:00:58.759 --> 00:01:11.120
and the survivors. This is DTL Pam Kinnimore's murder really

16
00:01:11.200 --> 00:01:14.560
had the community of Baton Rouge reeling if someone so

17
00:01:14.799 --> 00:01:18.640
good could be targeted, anyone could be just working and

18
00:01:18.719 --> 00:01:21.799
going home. Were now considered risky behaviors, it seemed, so

19
00:01:22.239 --> 00:01:24.959
what were women supposed to do. They couldn't have their

20
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:27.959
family and friends serve as bodyguards day in and day out.

21
00:01:28.599 --> 00:01:32.079
The fear was real, and everyone was looking for that

22
00:01:32.200 --> 00:01:35.519
white male in that white truck, the guy believed to

23
00:01:35.560 --> 00:01:39.200
be responsible for killing women. If you pulled up at

24
00:01:39.200 --> 00:01:41.920
a store where a white truck was parked, no thanks.

25
00:01:42.519 --> 00:01:44.879
If a guy asked you out after class and he

26
00:01:44.959 --> 00:01:47.239
wanted to pick you up in his pickup truck, what

27
00:01:47.319 --> 00:01:50.000
color is it was the first thought. The fear was

28
00:01:50.079 --> 00:01:54.519
that real. Luckily, for the women of Lafayette, Louisiana, they

29
00:01:54.519 --> 00:01:57.760
were just outside of the killing field. It seemed. They

30
00:01:57.840 --> 00:02:00.319
watched the news in horror that the killer of Pam

31
00:02:00.400 --> 00:02:03.200
Kennimore had come as close as the Whiskey Bay exit,

32
00:02:03.439 --> 00:02:06.079
which meant he likely passed through on his way wherever,

33
00:02:06.359 --> 00:02:09.719
and that was unsettling. Just a few days after Pam

34
00:02:09.800 --> 00:02:12.960
was murdered, on July fifteenth, two thousand and two, attack

35
00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:16.400
survivor Diane Alexander was able to give a detailed description

36
00:02:16.520 --> 00:02:19.560
of her attacker to Detective Arthur Boyd of the Saint

37
00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:23.400
Martin Parish Sheriff's Office, with this first hand account and

38
00:02:23.479 --> 00:02:27.759
description of the attacker, a composite sketch was created. Diane's

39
00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:30.159
sketch was that of a black man, but due to

40
00:02:30.199 --> 00:02:34.639
alleged eyewitness accounts of Pam's kidnapping and eventual murder, police

41
00:02:34.639 --> 00:02:37.879
were focused on a white man. Women were panicked as

42
00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:42.360
the ghost ran loose on the streets. But sometimes curiosity

43
00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:45.000
and a combination of dumb luck are a wonderful thing.

44
00:02:45.479 --> 00:02:49.319
Case in point, the crime lad did something unusual, or

45
00:02:49.360 --> 00:02:51.560
two of their employees did, at least, but it would

46
00:02:51.599 --> 00:02:54.639
prove very useful in this case. While chatting it up.

47
00:02:54.680 --> 00:02:58.319
One day, analysts were discussing their cases when a supervisor

48
00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:01.680
suggested they should see if any DNA from their respective

49
00:03:01.719 --> 00:03:05.680
cases might possibly match to the same suspect. But this

50
00:03:05.840 --> 00:03:08.719
wasn't really the normal procedure, so why would he say that?

51
00:03:09.439 --> 00:03:13.240
But curiosity took over, and five weeks after Pam Kinnimore

52
00:03:13.360 --> 00:03:17.520
was murdered, analysts Angela Ross and Julia Naylor did just that.

53
00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:20.840
They expected nothing to come of it, really, but jaws

54
00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:24.560
dropped when they found they matched. Holy cow, you have

55
00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:27.879
got to be kidding me. But the DNA don't lie.

56
00:03:28.439 --> 00:03:31.680
When the DNA reports came back from the lab. Everyone's

57
00:03:31.719 --> 00:03:36.439
worst fears were solidified. Whomever had killed Pam absolutely was

58
00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:41.199
responsible for Gina and Murray's murders as well. Everyone wondered

59
00:03:41.240 --> 00:03:44.039
when and where he would attack again. But police were

60
00:03:44.039 --> 00:03:47.240
now understanding that they in fact had a serial killer

61
00:03:47.520 --> 00:03:50.719
on their hands. As a listener of this series, you

62
00:03:50.840 --> 00:03:54.000
know there are more victims and believed victims before the

63
00:03:54.159 --> 00:03:58.599
last three respective murder cases. However, these three are the

64
00:03:58.599 --> 00:04:01.919
ones that took place consecutatively which caught the attention of

65
00:04:02.039 --> 00:04:06.719
law enforcement. But why now, we'll simply put it's because

66
00:04:06.759 --> 00:04:09.879
the time between murders was becoming shorter and shorter, as

67
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:12.759
well as the victims being in relative close proximity to

68
00:04:12.800 --> 00:04:16.680
one another geographically. Now that the serial killer was identified

69
00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:19.639
by DNA link, investigators had to put a face and

70
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:22.879
a name to that. DNA Cotis, the indexing system for

71
00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:25.879
DNA collected, came back with no hits as to who

72
00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:29.480
the DNA belonged to. For now, it was simply believed

73
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:33.000
to be a white man driving a white truck. As such,

74
00:04:33.360 --> 00:04:36.160
a task force was deemed the best option in tackling

75
00:04:36.199 --> 00:04:39.480
this massive load. A task force isn't just a group

76
00:04:39.519 --> 00:04:42.439
of men sitting around a table chatting. It's much more

77
00:04:42.560 --> 00:04:46.000
organized and vetted than people may know. This task force

78
00:04:46.120 --> 00:04:50.240
was multi agency to start. Baton Rouge Police Department East

79
00:04:50.279 --> 00:04:54.800
Baton Rouge, Paris Sheriff's Office, the FBI, Louisiana State Police,

80
00:04:55.279 --> 00:04:58.920
Lafayette Peara Sheriff's Office, and the Ibberville Para Sheriff's Office

81
00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:04.199
were all included. This team brought a powerhouse of experience, technology,

82
00:05:04.240 --> 00:05:07.519
and information to the table. Think of it like the Olympics.

83
00:05:07.959 --> 00:05:11.480
Great athletes are dotted all over the professional realm of sports,

84
00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:15.079
but the Olympics is a different animal. The best come

85
00:05:15.120 --> 00:05:19.240
together to create a dominating effect. This task force was

86
00:05:19.519 --> 00:05:23.759
just that. Sharing information is key in solving crimes that

87
00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:27.160
span large areas. While I find it understandable to want

88
00:05:27.160 --> 00:05:30.399
to solve your cases if you've dedicated your time and

89
00:05:30.439 --> 00:05:32.839
your drive to it, but this was too big for

90
00:05:32.920 --> 00:05:36.240
one man to handle. This would require a team approach.

91
00:05:37.079 --> 00:05:39.879
Isn't it crazy knowing that one man can cause enough

92
00:05:39.920 --> 00:05:42.800
death and devastation that it takes a team of experts

93
00:05:42.839 --> 00:05:46.240
to bring him down. That's how bad this was. If

94
00:05:46.279 --> 00:05:49.240
you haven't caught on yet, a task force is a

95
00:05:49.279 --> 00:05:52.120
well oiled machine after all of the agreements are made,

96
00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:54.399
and I won't bore you with those details, but I

97
00:05:54.439 --> 00:05:57.000
can say that this group had three hundred and sixty

98
00:05:57.040 --> 00:06:01.079
combined years of experience in investigation. They were trained in

99
00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:03.759
the most up to date investigative techniques of the time,

100
00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:08.319
with experience ranging from local to international levels. This team

101
00:06:08.360 --> 00:06:11.959
approach now offered access to technology and information sharing that

102
00:06:12.040 --> 00:06:15.399
one agency alone would likely never have due to the

103
00:06:15.399 --> 00:06:19.759
funding limitations, etc. The Task Force was made official in

104
00:06:19.800 --> 00:06:22.879
August of two thousand and two, right after Pam's murder

105
00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:26.600
was linked, and they started by creating a victim timeline, which,

106
00:06:26.800 --> 00:06:29.079
as far as they knew at the moment, started with

107
00:06:29.199 --> 00:06:32.480
Gina Green. As they jumped into action and began chasing

108
00:06:32.519 --> 00:06:36.000
down tips and random leads, they had some very straightforward

109
00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:40.279
information for the public. Be careful, stay vigilant, and lock

110
00:06:40.360 --> 00:06:44.120
your doors. Truth was, they had no clue who this

111
00:06:44.279 --> 00:06:48.399
monster was yet, But all of this terror paled in

112
00:06:48.439 --> 00:06:51.279
comparison to the fear a young woman in Lafayette was

113
00:06:51.319 --> 00:06:55.759
already facing one girl who, now despite the well publicized

114
00:06:55.800 --> 00:06:59.560
killings happening, had already been rocked by death. But not

115
00:06:59.600 --> 00:07:02.480
one of the victims in the series thus far, it

116
00:07:02.600 --> 00:07:05.959
was her very own mother. The fear of facing life

117
00:07:05.959 --> 00:07:09.040
without her mama was so heavy that a serial killer

118
00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:12.680
was the last thing on her mind. Trenisha Denay Cologne

119
00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:16.480
was a pretty vibrant and outgoing young woman, but her

120
00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:19.639
upbeat outlook on life had been severely damaged in recent

121
00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:22.920
time when her loving mother, Verna, passed away after a

122
00:07:22.959 --> 00:07:25.839
long battle with breast cancer in April of two thousand

123
00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:28.480
and two. We all have that person who is our

124
00:07:28.600 --> 00:07:31.000
rock and our point of calm in a messy and

125
00:07:31.079 --> 00:07:34.920
difficult world. Trenisha, who was known by her family as Denay,

126
00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:38.480
felt that her mother was that person, and now she

127
00:07:38.639 --> 00:07:41.800
was gone. Denay felt lost and as if she were

128
00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:45.120
going through the motions of life, but everything felt dull

129
00:07:45.279 --> 00:07:49.079
and colorless without her mama. Yes, she had a loving

130
00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:52.000
father and brother, but that wasn't going to fill the void.

131
00:07:52.600 --> 00:07:57.199
A girl just needs her mom. But this much I know, Denay,

132
00:07:57.399 --> 00:08:01.000
while devastated, should have also been holding her head high.

133
00:08:01.399 --> 00:08:05.160
She was living proof, flesh and bone that her mama

134
00:08:05.199 --> 00:08:08.600
was everything worth grieving and that she raised one hell

135
00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:11.519
of a young lady. Denay had been adopted as a

136
00:08:11.560 --> 00:08:16.079
baby chosen handpicked, if you will, by her parents. Imagine

137
00:08:16.079 --> 00:08:19.199
being so wanted and so loved that two people would

138
00:08:19.240 --> 00:08:22.360
look at your face and instantly know they were unable

139
00:08:22.439 --> 00:08:27.000
to live without you. That was beautiful Denay. When Mamma

140
00:08:27.120 --> 00:08:30.560
Verna and Daddy Sterling Senior lay eyes on her, they

141
00:08:30.680 --> 00:08:33.600
knew she was meant to be their baby girl, even

142
00:08:33.639 --> 00:08:37.120
if her life came via someone else's womb. Miss Verna

143
00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:40.600
had some complications when she had Dnay's older brother, Sterling Junior,

144
00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:43.559
and they didn't want to risk that again. They knew

145
00:08:43.559 --> 00:08:47.320
they wanted a daughter, and adoption made that happen. Denay

146
00:08:47.399 --> 00:08:51.639
was raised on morals and standards with high expectations. She

147
00:08:51.799 --> 00:08:55.639
was a queen, gentle and kind, but disgustingly bright, with

148
00:08:55.759 --> 00:09:00.200
ambition overflowing a little bit more about this girl. She

149
00:09:00.279 --> 00:09:03.919
was someone we all would appreciate. She chased knowledge with

150
00:09:03.960 --> 00:09:07.320
a vengeance and loved to learn about culture and people.

151
00:09:08.440 --> 00:09:10.879
At just twenty three years old, she was blazing a

152
00:09:10.919 --> 00:09:14.399
path to success. She was an avid reader and lover

153
00:09:14.600 --> 00:09:18.480
of languages. She was bilingual, but continued to teach yourself

154
00:09:18.559 --> 00:09:21.120
new languages in her free time. But she wasn't a

155
00:09:21.159 --> 00:09:24.159
straight up book nerd. If that's what you're thinking, No way.

156
00:09:24.639 --> 00:09:29.360
She was multifaceted, competitive, and a young woman filled with patriotism.

157
00:09:29.960 --> 00:09:31.960
She had joined the army two years prior to the

158
00:09:32.039 --> 00:09:34.879
story taking place, and was a force to be reckoned with.

159
00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:38.559
When she completed her obligations with the army, she returned

160
00:09:38.559 --> 00:09:40.679
home for a brief stay with her dad, and in

161
00:09:40.720 --> 00:09:43.240
a short time she would be heading out on her

162
00:09:43.320 --> 00:09:48.519
new adventure, joining the few the proud, the Marines. She

163
00:09:48.639 --> 00:09:51.519
was a testament to her family's belief in service above self.

164
00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:55.159
She fully intended to serve both you and I for

165
00:09:55.240 --> 00:09:57.960
some time to come. While she was certainly in an

166
00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:01.000
emotional rut, she kept her chin up and she never

167
00:10:01.080 --> 00:10:04.440
folded under the pressure of life. She walked and even

168
00:10:04.480 --> 00:10:08.240
crawled if she must, but she never stopped moving. Her

169
00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:10.720
mother wouldn't have wanted her to quit or fall apart,

170
00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:13.639
and she knew that. But she was still human, and

171
00:10:13.639 --> 00:10:17.440
the heart wants what it wants, and Dnay's heart desperately

172
00:10:17.519 --> 00:10:21.120
wanted her mama back, just one more hug and one

173
00:10:21.159 --> 00:10:24.399
more I love you. She wasn't ready to say goodbye,

174
00:10:24.759 --> 00:10:27.120
and she didn't want to let go, But as many

175
00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:30.080
of us have had to, learn cancer doesn't care what

176
00:10:30.159 --> 00:10:33.960
we want, does it. Denay loved the character Tweetybird and

177
00:10:34.039 --> 00:10:36.720
even gotten a tattoo of it, amongst many others. And

178
00:10:36.759 --> 00:10:39.000
she had that quirkiness about her that you couldn't put

179
00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:42.200
your finger on. Years back, Dnay comically decided that she

180
00:10:42.320 --> 00:10:44.519
was going to try out for the show Survivor. And

181
00:10:44.600 --> 00:10:48.519
I say comically because her tryout video was flat out hilarious.

182
00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:51.399
Did she climb a mountain or run a marathon to

183
00:10:51.440 --> 00:10:55.840
show her skill? Nah, that was child's play. She decided,

184
00:10:55.919 --> 00:10:58.120
in order to make the cut, she should make a

185
00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:02.240
video of herself wrestling a pig in the mud. Daddy

186
00:11:02.360 --> 00:11:04.799
was cracking up laughing as he filmed her in the

187
00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:07.720
slop with that pig at her grandparents house. Now that's

188
00:11:07.759 --> 00:11:11.039
not something you see every day now. Dennay was just

189
00:11:11.080 --> 00:11:13.960
as smart as she was beautiful. Her brother was older

190
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.240
and was in college, but he would still call his

191
00:11:16.279 --> 00:11:19.600
little sister in high school to help him with his coursework.

192
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:22.440
She was always willing to help out too. She was

193
00:11:22.600 --> 00:11:26.240
everything a likable woman, in my opinion, should be. But

194
00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:29.399
the moments of hilariousness had passed and today had hit

195
00:11:29.480 --> 00:11:32.320
rock bottom. Her depression had gotten so bad that she

196
00:11:32.440 --> 00:11:35.720
recently decided she didn't want to live anymore without her mom,

197
00:11:36.039 --> 00:11:38.960
and she attempted to end her life. She grieved so

198
00:11:39.240 --> 00:11:41.639
hard for five months and it was September of two

199
00:11:41.679 --> 00:11:44.399
thousand and two when she overdosed on pills, just trying

200
00:11:44.440 --> 00:11:47.639
to make the pain stop, anything to make her daily

201
00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:51.480
agony continue no more. But on the flip side, she

202
00:11:51.600 --> 00:11:54.840
was fiercely loved by her daddy and her brother. In

203
00:11:54.879 --> 00:11:57.639
her personal journey with grief, she was temporarily blinded to

204
00:11:57.720 --> 00:12:01.879
the aftermath her death would have brought her family again.

205
00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:06.279
Denay wasn't a quitter and she didn't give in. But

206
00:12:06.440 --> 00:12:09.360
love in its purest form is the devastation that a

207
00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:12.480
company's losing someone you love with all of your heart,

208
00:12:12.840 --> 00:12:16.240
and she just wanted to be with her mom. Thank God,

209
00:12:16.279 --> 00:12:19.200
the attempt was unsuccessful and her family breathed a sigh

210
00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:21.759
of relief when she recovered. And this is one of

211
00:12:21.799 --> 00:12:24.000
those things I think we can all understand in a way.

212
00:12:24.679 --> 00:12:27.919
Life is hard, and no one, no matter how tough,

213
00:12:28.120 --> 00:12:31.759
is bulletproof. Denay was now making strides though, to not

214
00:12:31.879 --> 00:12:35.480
move on per se, but to move forward. Simple thoughts

215
00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:38.240
helped to keep her on track. Mama may be gone,

216
00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:41.519
but I will see her again someday, one day at

217
00:12:41.519 --> 00:12:44.639
a time. And it's okay to feel the emotions, work

218
00:12:44.720 --> 00:12:48.399
through them, don't fall into despair. And one way she

219
00:12:48.519 --> 00:12:51.679
chose to channel her emotions was by visiting her mother's

220
00:12:51.679 --> 00:12:54.919
grave to be as close to her physical body. Although

221
00:12:54.960 --> 00:12:58.919
she knew her spirit wasn't there either way, it still

222
00:12:58.960 --> 00:13:01.840
brought her comfort and for the last two weeks leading

223
00:13:01.919 --> 00:13:04.840
up to this story unfolding, Denay had a routine which

224
00:13:04.879 --> 00:13:09.039
included visiting her mother's grave daily. November twenty first, two

225
00:13:09.080 --> 00:13:12.080
thousand and two, was no different. Denay had plans for

226
00:13:12.120 --> 00:13:14.799
the day. First, she was going to spend some time

227
00:13:14.840 --> 00:13:18.679
at the library around eleven am. Afterwards, she was going

228
00:13:18.679 --> 00:13:20.879
to spend some time at her mother's grave, and then

229
00:13:20.919 --> 00:13:23.519
she would be completing a shift at Helping Hands before

230
00:13:23.519 --> 00:13:26.840
meeting up with her brother. In general, Helping Hands was

231
00:13:26.879 --> 00:13:30.360
a community support center that helped people with specific services

232
00:13:30.440 --> 00:13:34.480
like emergency financial aid for utilities, a food pantry, and

233
00:13:34.519 --> 00:13:37.720
things like senior care coordination. But Denay was a doll

234
00:13:37.840 --> 00:13:41.679
like that. She loved helping people. But when Denay never

235
00:13:41.720 --> 00:13:46.240
returned home that evening, her family became extremely concerned, especially

236
00:13:46.240 --> 00:13:48.039
when she had plans to go and spend the night

237
00:13:48.080 --> 00:13:51.320
with her brother, Sterling Junior. Denay wasn't want to just

238
00:13:51.440 --> 00:13:54.080
leave or run away, and she wouldn't ignore her family's

239
00:13:54.080 --> 00:13:57.120
attempts to contact her, and when she never returned her

240
00:13:57.200 --> 00:14:01.039
daddy's calls, the alarm bells were going off. But because

241
00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:03.720
Denay was an adult, she was allowed to leave if

242
00:14:03.720 --> 00:14:06.240
she wanted to, and the twenty four hours would have

243
00:14:06.320 --> 00:14:08.960
to pass before a missing person's report could be filed.

244
00:14:09.559 --> 00:14:12.159
There was no evidence of foul play nor anything else,

245
00:14:12.240 --> 00:14:15.919
thus there was no impending circumstance to warrant breaking that policy.

246
00:14:16.600 --> 00:14:19.399
But the next day things would change, and that's because

247
00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:22.399
her car was located in Grand Coutou, right near the

248
00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:26.559
Saint Charles Barromeo Cemetery, the very place Dunay's mother had

249
00:14:26.600 --> 00:14:30.360
been buried. Grand Coutou is a small town population of

250
00:14:30.440 --> 00:14:33.759
less than a thousand, and roughly fifteen miles from Lafayette,

251
00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:37.720
almost fifty miles from Baton Rouge. It's a slow place

252
00:14:37.799 --> 00:14:40.679
with farmland, and unlike the hustle and bustle of nearby

253
00:14:40.759 --> 00:14:45.279
larger cities. Inside her car, her purse and her keys

254
00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:47.799
were still there, which meant she either walked away and

255
00:14:47.840 --> 00:14:51.480
didn't return, or she rode away with someone else. But

256
00:14:51.600 --> 00:14:54.120
even in both of those scenarios, a woman would take

257
00:14:54.120 --> 00:14:58.679
her purse, especially when it contained her wallet. Denay wasn't

258
00:14:58.720 --> 00:15:01.039
in the car, nor was she anywhere in the area,

259
00:15:01.120 --> 00:15:03.919
so this only added to the concern. Her daddy at

260
00:15:03.960 --> 00:15:06.240
this point called police and was able to file that

261
00:15:06.320 --> 00:15:10.519
missing person's report. As you can imagine, everyone started looking

262
00:15:10.559 --> 00:15:14.000
for Denay. Her family and police went all out searching

263
00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:16.600
for her. In the area was rural, there was lots

264
00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:21.480
of land to cover, which they did search in force. Friends, family,

265
00:15:21.519 --> 00:15:24.559
and the police. Together they all worked to find her.

266
00:15:25.039 --> 00:15:28.000
Police even loaned four wheelers to Denay's family for them

267
00:15:28.039 --> 00:15:31.720
to help cover more ground in their search. Helicopter's word

268
00:15:31.759 --> 00:15:34.679
overhead looking from the air as well, but nothing was

269
00:15:34.799 --> 00:15:38.720
ever located. No one knew for certain what had happened

270
00:15:38.720 --> 00:15:42.360
to her, but her brother thought he had an idea. See.

271
00:15:42.399 --> 00:15:45.639
Two thousand and two was the time of chat rooms online.

272
00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:48.000
People didn't really understand the dangers of it like we

273
00:15:48.039 --> 00:15:50.559
do now, and Denay was known to meet people in

274
00:15:50.639 --> 00:15:53.200
these chat rooms a time or two. A guy she

275
00:15:53.240 --> 00:15:55.360
met even came over to the house and hung out.

276
00:15:56.039 --> 00:15:58.279
Sterling Junior thought in the back of his mind that

277
00:15:58.360 --> 00:16:01.159
maybe one of those guys had kidnap, but there was

278
00:16:01.159 --> 00:16:04.320
no evidence to support this, just a gut feeling that

279
00:16:04.480 --> 00:16:08.480
someone had taken his sister against her will. The search

280
00:16:08.480 --> 00:16:12.080
would continue and along three days would pass before any

281
00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:15.840
new information came to light. This new information, however, wouldn't

282
00:16:15.879 --> 00:16:21.240
be coming from anywhere near the abandoned location of Dney's car. Scott, Louisiana,

283
00:16:21.279 --> 00:16:24.639
is about nineteen miles from Grand Couto. A hunter was

284
00:16:24.679 --> 00:16:26.919
walking the woods when he stumbled upon the body of

285
00:16:26.960 --> 00:16:30.080
a dead female lying in a wooded area near a field.

286
00:16:30.600 --> 00:16:33.120
Police were called, and as they cordoned off the scene,

287
00:16:33.159 --> 00:16:36.279
it was obvious that whoever she was, she had fought

288
00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:39.399
for her life. She was a light skinned female in

289
00:16:39.440 --> 00:16:42.320
her early twenties, dressed only in a T shirt. She

290
00:16:42.399 --> 00:16:45.519
was still wearing her bra and her socks and her

291
00:16:45.559 --> 00:16:50.639
tennis shoes, but no pants or underwear. Immediately this screamed

292
00:16:50.679 --> 00:16:53.879
foul play, as no one dresses this way, and her

293
00:16:53.919 --> 00:16:57.080
location wasn't near anything for her to have come from,

294
00:16:57.399 --> 00:17:00.919
nor to be traveling towards. No pants would make the

295
00:17:00.960 --> 00:17:04.640
average person think sexual assault, which would be likely considering.

296
00:17:04.680 --> 00:17:07.880
Investigators located a pair of fleece pants and a pair

297
00:17:07.920 --> 00:17:11.680
of underwear in some underbrush near the body. Continuing to

298
00:17:11.720 --> 00:17:14.519
scour the ground, they also located a pool of blood

299
00:17:14.599 --> 00:17:18.279
roughly thirty feet from where the body lay. Drag Marks

300
00:17:18.279 --> 00:17:21.559
in the mud were proof that she'd been drug some distance.

301
00:17:22.480 --> 00:17:25.559
The body was taken for autopsy, and everyone searching for

302
00:17:25.640 --> 00:17:28.039
Denay had gathered at her daddy's house during a break.

303
00:17:28.039 --> 00:17:30.960
When the phone rang, police broke the news that a

304
00:17:31.000 --> 00:17:34.000
body had been found, but they were clear they weren't

305
00:17:34.039 --> 00:17:37.839
sure who it was yet. Sterling Senior felt that sick

306
00:17:37.960 --> 00:17:41.160
feeling of oh my god, what if they found my

307
00:17:41.319 --> 00:17:45.599
baby girl dead? Within six months, this man had lost

308
00:17:45.640 --> 00:17:48.920
his wife and now possibly his daughter. There is no

309
00:17:49.119 --> 00:17:52.039
way the world could be this cruel to one family.

310
00:17:52.599 --> 00:17:55.640
But he would have to wait for an identification. As

311
00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:58.440
the death made news, a witness came forward and reported

312
00:17:58.440 --> 00:18:01.599
seeing a white pickup truck park behind Denay's car on

313
00:18:01.640 --> 00:18:05.759
November twenty first, which raised eyebrows. For sure, a neighbor

314
00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:08.519
of the Cologns happened to be someone with a cousin

315
00:18:08.519 --> 00:18:11.200
who was a coroner. And that person went to ide

316
00:18:11.279 --> 00:18:15.359
the body. When the call came back, devastation set in.

317
00:18:16.279 --> 00:18:19.319
It was in fact beautiful Denay, and her death was

318
00:18:19.599 --> 00:18:23.880
anything but quick. Based on the autopsy and combined with

319
00:18:23.920 --> 00:18:27.359
the evidence at both locations, Denay had gone to the

320
00:18:27.400 --> 00:18:30.920
cemetery to visit at her mother's grave when someone lay

321
00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:33.880
eyes on her. How he located her in such a

322
00:18:33.960 --> 00:18:36.319
rural area, Linn's one to believe that he must have

323
00:18:36.440 --> 00:18:39.880
been watching her. When her visit with her mom was completed,

324
00:18:40.200 --> 00:18:43.599
she returned to her car when the man approached. Whether

325
00:18:43.640 --> 00:18:46.759
he asked for directions or maybe help with something isn't known,

326
00:18:47.039 --> 00:18:52.000
but Denay was kind, compassionate, and also trusting. When he

327
00:18:52.039 --> 00:18:55.160
saw that the coast was clear, that person grabbed Denay

328
00:18:55.200 --> 00:18:58.079
and forced her into his truck. It only took seconds

329
00:18:58.119 --> 00:19:00.039
for her to be pushed into his vehicle and he

330
00:19:00.079 --> 00:19:03.200
told her to shut up or be stabbed. She likely

331
00:19:03.240 --> 00:19:06.039
complied in an effort to survive the encounter, and as

332
00:19:06.039 --> 00:19:09.359
the truck took to the interstate, Denay knew this wasn't good,

333
00:19:09.640 --> 00:19:12.480
but she sat there wishing and more likely praying, that

334
00:19:12.519 --> 00:19:15.240
he would let her go. How could she get away

335
00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:18.319
from him? Her mind raised as the vehicle sped ahead

336
00:19:18.359 --> 00:19:21.240
on the interstate. She had no idea where he was

337
00:19:21.279 --> 00:19:23.400
taking her, but she knew he would hurt her if

338
00:19:23.400 --> 00:19:27.359
she tried to fight him. They rode nearly twenty miles together,

339
00:19:27.759 --> 00:19:31.119
Denay surrounded by people in cars, but certainly all alone,

340
00:19:31.440 --> 00:19:35.039
and she was getting more desperate by the minute. Eventually,

341
00:19:35.079 --> 00:19:37.039
her abductor hit his blinker and the truck took the

342
00:19:37.079 --> 00:19:40.119
Scott Exit, where it slowed to a stop at the juncture.

343
00:19:41.240 --> 00:19:44.599
He turned and would eventually find himself with his victim

344
00:19:44.680 --> 00:19:49.039
on a desolate road, running alongside a field, perfect no

345
00:19:49.119 --> 00:19:52.559
one to see what he had plans to do. Get out,

346
00:19:53.400 --> 00:19:56.279
simple words that she followed so as to not be harmed.

347
00:19:56.920 --> 00:19:59.680
If Denay was already hurt at this point, that's up

348
00:19:59.680 --> 00:20:02.599
for space vlation. But the man came around the truck

349
00:20:02.599 --> 00:20:05.519
where he demanded she'd get out, take off her pants

350
00:20:05.799 --> 00:20:09.680
and her panties. In shock, initially, he demanded it again,

351
00:20:09.720 --> 00:20:11.599
where she did as she was told, but her mind

352
00:20:11.680 --> 00:20:15.160
was reeling a mile a minute. She slid off her

353
00:20:15.200 --> 00:20:18.359
fleece pants and then her panties. Each leg pulled over

354
00:20:18.400 --> 00:20:21.599
her tennis shoes one at a time, until she stood

355
00:20:21.640 --> 00:20:25.319
there exposed. She didn't remove her shoes because she knew

356
00:20:25.319 --> 00:20:27.119
in the back of her mind she may need them,

357
00:20:27.599 --> 00:20:31.839
but she felt so humiliated and vulnerable, and she knew

358
00:20:31.880 --> 00:20:34.680
she was about to be raped. But Denay had no

359
00:20:34.759 --> 00:20:38.079
plans to stay. Evident shows She took off running at

360
00:20:38.079 --> 00:20:40.559
some point, her legs feeling like lead, and she had

361
00:20:40.599 --> 00:20:42.839
no clue where she was going, but she was digging

362
00:20:42.880 --> 00:20:46.000
in and giving it all she had. A soldier doesn't

363
00:20:46.000 --> 00:20:49.319
give up. They fight. She ran hard, but her kidnapper

364
00:20:49.359 --> 00:20:52.240
chased her down step for step, where his two hundred

365
00:20:52.240 --> 00:20:55.480
and sixty pound body tackled her much smaller one. They

366
00:20:55.559 --> 00:20:58.319
smashed to the ground, both of their adrenaline pumping, but

367
00:20:58.359 --> 00:21:01.920
for much different reasons, and she clawed and screamed at

368
00:21:01.960 --> 00:21:04.480
the man while he got more and more excited at

369
00:21:04.559 --> 00:21:08.079
her fear. The more she fought, the more excited and

370
00:21:08.200 --> 00:21:12.279
powerful he became. Armed with an unknown object. Dereck todd

371
00:21:12.319 --> 00:21:15.079
Lee took it and began smashing Denay about the head

372
00:21:15.119 --> 00:21:19.400
with brutal accuracy. The blunt force trauma so extensive that

373
00:21:19.440 --> 00:21:22.759
it would eventually kill her, but not before she collapsed,

374
00:21:22.920 --> 00:21:25.720
agonizing in pain to the ground as her captor then

375
00:21:25.799 --> 00:21:29.839
raped her viciously. De Day, no doubt, cried and moaned,

376
00:21:29.839 --> 00:21:32.680
but that was of no consequence to Dereck Todd Lee.

377
00:21:33.279 --> 00:21:37.200
Matter of fact, he loved it. At some point, Denay

378
00:21:37.279 --> 00:21:41.559
stopped responding and breathing ceased, but Dereck Lee didn't stop

379
00:21:41.599 --> 00:21:45.480
what he was doing until he was satiated sexually. As

380
00:21:45.480 --> 00:21:49.039
he completed the rape of this innocent girl, he watched

381
00:21:49.079 --> 00:21:52.119
as she would die on the ground next to a field.

382
00:21:53.079 --> 00:21:56.759
He got up, put on his pants and sipped them closed,

383
00:21:58.119 --> 00:22:01.200
panting and now done with this prey, Derek didn't want

384
00:22:01.240 --> 00:22:03.839
to leave her where she could easily be found. Her

385
00:22:03.880 --> 00:22:05.759
head wounds had poured out a lot of blood, but

386
00:22:05.799 --> 00:22:09.039
her body was the issue for him. He looked around

387
00:22:09.400 --> 00:22:11.759
and then grabbed her by her ankles, dragging her the

388
00:22:11.839 --> 00:22:15.319
thirty feet to a less conspicuous area of brush, before

389
00:22:15.400 --> 00:22:19.279
dropping her legs and walking back to his truck. He

390
00:22:19.359 --> 00:22:21.759
started it up, and he was now on his way

391
00:22:21.759 --> 00:22:25.440
home for the evening. Denay lay out in the elements

392
00:22:25.480 --> 00:22:28.759
for the following three days until the hunter spotted her body,

393
00:22:29.359 --> 00:22:33.839
but even that delay couldn't stop nature. Science was still available,

394
00:22:34.160 --> 00:22:36.839
and an analyst at the Acadiana Crime lab would write

395
00:22:36.880 --> 00:22:40.200
a solid report on her findings. A rape test kit

396
00:22:40.279 --> 00:22:42.680
was performed on Denay at the morgue and those samples

397
00:22:42.680 --> 00:22:46.920
were sent to analyst Carolyn Booker, who was able to locate, identify,

398
00:22:47.200 --> 00:22:50.279
and also obtain a genetic profile of the man who

399
00:22:50.319 --> 00:22:55.400
deposited his seamen inside young Dnay against her will. As

400
00:22:55.440 --> 00:22:58.680
this was being completed, beautiful Denay was laid to rest

401
00:22:58.880 --> 00:23:02.279
right next to her beloved mama. Her family and friends

402
00:23:02.279 --> 00:23:05.079
were in mourning, but also at the same time they

403
00:23:05.119 --> 00:23:07.480
felt sorry for all of the women being murdered by

404
00:23:07.519 --> 00:23:11.559
a serial killer in Baton Rouge. What they were about

405
00:23:11.640 --> 00:23:14.839
to shockingly find out was that they themselves were closer

406
00:23:14.880 --> 00:23:18.480
to those murdered women than they knew. The DNA collected

407
00:23:18.480 --> 00:23:21.599
from Dnay's rape kit was run against the serial killer's DNA,

408
00:23:22.160 --> 00:23:25.559
and it was a match that Baton Rouge serial killer

409
00:23:25.839 --> 00:23:31.599
had now claimed another victim, Trenisha Denay Cologne, whoever murdered

410
00:23:31.599 --> 00:23:36.119
Gina Green, Charlotte Murray Pace and Pam Kinnemore, had also

411
00:23:36.480 --> 00:23:40.640
murdered Denay. The task force was steadily working the previous

412
00:23:40.720 --> 00:23:44.160
murders when Dnay's murder was added to the already large caseload.

413
00:23:44.680 --> 00:23:46.799
They knew they had to stop this guy, but at

414
00:23:46.880 --> 00:23:50.759
least they had a solid shoe print from the scene. Really,

415
00:23:50.799 --> 00:23:53.359
it was all they had in conjunction with the DNA profile,

416
00:23:53.400 --> 00:23:56.480
but it was something. But now the argument amongst the

417
00:23:56.559 --> 00:23:59.559
task force was what to do with the shoe information?

418
00:24:00.240 --> 00:24:02.720
Do we release it in hopes of someone recognizing it

419
00:24:03.240 --> 00:24:05.759
or do we keep it hush as we investigate men

420
00:24:05.880 --> 00:24:08.039
and see if we can find a match to the print.

421
00:24:08.759 --> 00:24:12.400
While this information was debated, a profile of Dnay and

422
00:24:12.480 --> 00:24:16.359
the other women's killer was being developed. The Behavioral Analysis

423
00:24:16.440 --> 00:24:19.240
Unit of the FBI created a profile to give more

424
00:24:19.279 --> 00:24:22.200
insight to the man believed to be hunting women. That

425
00:24:22.319 --> 00:24:26.799
profile was as follows. Because Dnay's abduction was believed to

426
00:24:26.799 --> 00:24:29.680
be around one point thirty in the afternoon, this killer

427
00:24:29.759 --> 00:24:32.640
was starting to partake in very high risk behavior. For

428
00:24:32.720 --> 00:24:37.559
this offender, why while people were working and conducting normal

429
00:24:37.559 --> 00:24:40.400
business in the area, Yet he still took the massive

430
00:24:40.519 --> 00:24:43.880
risk of driving to another location with his victim in

431
00:24:44.000 --> 00:24:47.880
his vehicle during the daytime where they could easily be seen.

432
00:24:48.319 --> 00:24:50.960
The killer also felt comfortable enough to take her to

433
00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:53.880
the area she was killed, which was rather rural This

434
00:24:53.960 --> 00:24:57.079
meant he was hunting on familiar ground to him, either

435
00:24:57.119 --> 00:25:00.920
he lived or he worked in that area. The killer

436
00:25:00.920 --> 00:25:03.200
would likely be paying attention to the news and would

437
00:25:03.200 --> 00:25:06.880
have some obvious personality traits, one of them being he

438
00:25:06.960 --> 00:25:11.680
acts suddenly, seemingly without deliberation. He tends to disregard the

439
00:25:11.720 --> 00:25:15.480
consequences for his behavior. He likely has a history of

440
00:25:15.519 --> 00:25:20.480
domestic violence, workplace violence, and threatening behavior, and he's likely

441
00:25:20.559 --> 00:25:24.440
emotionally shallow and cold towards those even the ones he

442
00:25:24.480 --> 00:25:28.839
supposedly cares about. His method was to follow women and

443
00:25:29.039 --> 00:25:31.839
watch them without being noticed, yet come across as a

444
00:25:31.960 --> 00:25:34.599
nice guy. This is to blend in with the community.

445
00:25:35.559 --> 00:25:38.039
How accurate do you think the behavioral profile is to

446
00:25:38.079 --> 00:25:41.559
this point? Seems pretty good to me. For now, though,

447
00:25:41.759 --> 00:25:44.559
the only new information for the public was that the

448
00:25:44.559 --> 00:25:47.240
white truck may have a small fish symbol on the

449
00:25:47.319 --> 00:25:50.720
upper left portion of the tailgate and possibly a license

450
00:25:50.720 --> 00:25:56.440
plate with the characters JT, three, four and one. Everyone

451
00:25:56.599 --> 00:25:59.960
was paying attention to the news. Getting any new information

452
00:26:00.119 --> 00:26:02.519
on the killings was a must so women could keep

453
00:26:02.519 --> 00:26:06.240
themselves safe. Women just like sixty five year old Mary

454
00:26:06.319 --> 00:26:11.559
Ann Fowler. Coming up on the next episode of DTL

455
00:26:23.720 --> 00:26:26.200
investigators on the Baton Rouge Serial Task Force were in

456
00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:28.880
the throes of their investigation when Leeds came in that

457
00:26:28.920 --> 00:26:39.640
would pull them in all different directions. DNA had confirmed

458
00:26:39.680 --> 00:26:43.519
that the same man killed Denay, Pam Gina, and Murray

459
00:26:43.880 --> 00:26:47.400
just two days before Christmas. Everyone would learn that Dnay's

460
00:26:47.400 --> 00:26:53.480
death was now tied to the case for sixty five

461
00:26:53.519 --> 00:26:56.480
year old Mary and Fowler visiting her husband in federal

462
00:26:56.480 --> 00:26:59.559
prison for Christmas wasn't the type of holiday memory she

463
00:26:59.599 --> 00:27:02.359
had hoped, but it was what she had to work with,

464
00:27:02.400 --> 00:27:04.519
So she swung into a strip mall on Highway four

465
00:27:04.559 --> 00:27:07.119
fifteen that held a subway sandwich shop where she could

466
00:27:07.160 --> 00:27:11.279
get a bite to eat. It was about five thirty

467
00:27:11.319 --> 00:27:13.960
PM and not very busy, considering it was Christmas Eve.

468
00:27:16.319 --> 00:27:19.440
The movement of the camera would capture Mary Anne walking

469
00:27:19.480 --> 00:27:23.240
to the parking lot and approaching her car. At that moment,

470
00:27:23.720 --> 00:27:26.160
only the lower half of a man would appear to

471
00:27:26.200 --> 00:27:28.759
approach her from behind, but it was obvious he was

472
00:27:28.799 --> 00:27:31.440
grabbing her in some way because the camera caught her

473
00:27:31.559 --> 00:27:45.000
dropping her food and struggling, But then it panned away
